  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) Or maybe it is just trying to read the crystal ball. Donaldson was great, but he was down in almost every offensive category from the year before, is getting paid more, and while still was Donaldson has a career arc that is pretty uncommon. He was virtually nothing until he was 27. Then he became MVP caliber. We have all written off guys who had shown just as much or even more up until that age. Except the Shark. There should be no limit to the value of being graced with his presence for just a mere year. And I agree about Donaldson. At an advanced age, he went bad year, great year, good year...what's next?
  2. QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 28, 2014 -> 10:13 PM) Obviously- but I'm stating an Upton extension too. You don't think Gattis can catch? No I don't - I don't think that there is any position he plays wells. He's a pretty good hitter, but nothing special. The Braves aren't extending him; it's a trade for a rent then HOPE to extend him. Sign him next year instead. He's much better than any hitter on this year's market.
  3. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 12:15 AM) The surprising part is the move to sign Butler, then the opposite side of the spectrum by trading Donaldson. It's the equivalent of those Sox fans who want the Sox to trade Alexei after we signed LaRoche. Right Keep the team competitive with short term no-comp free agents while you retool. It's a Cubs/Royals/Astros/Pirates aversion move for a big rebuild. Or avoid perpetual 85 win purgatory for a decent team. Butler didn't cost a thing in terms of talent Now you can trade a hitter you do have for other "things"
  4. People fawn over these veteran hitters, but the As got a pretty good and very young 3B ( if he can stay on the field), a 4/5 starter that they can probably make look like a 3 in their ballpark (it's happened many times before) and a very good SS prospect. Not the greatest return in the world, but not bad either.
  5. Reddick hasn't been able to hit lefties at all or the last 2 years. Sox have 2 situational lefty hitters already penciled in as starters. Sox need Youth No rents (unless it's for complete spare parts). Shark is someone who might be a nice signing after next season. I wonder what he really turned down from the Cubs? He's not getting near Lester/Scherzer money, but he'll want (and get) 5 years. 5/90 - something like that? Pointless to trade scarce prospects for him this year for the purpose of winning 84 games.
  6. had the Donaldson part right. Wonder who the "others" are. Lawrie's a good ballplayer but he's never put in a full season.
  7. Oakland doesn't have the young talent that I'd prefer. Maybe a move for Donaldson. If Williams is involved, it would be Gillaspie, Montas and another prospect who I wouldn't want to trade for Donaldson.
  8. Don't like rents Don't like doing business with Oakland for players who have been on their major league team for more than 2 years. They don't have enough prospects for Alexei.
  9. QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 28, 2014 -> 07:12 PM) You're right - it's not going to happen and is stupid... Putting money aside thou, what would you rather have... 1.) Jose Quintana Or 2.) Justin Upton, Evan Gattis, and Jon Lester I'd certainly rather have Quintana over 1 year of Upton and Gattis who really has no position.
  10. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 28, 2014 -> 03:22 PM) again i disagree, if this was the last week of spring training and this is the best the sox did to improve the team, then i will wholehearted agree with you. this is not the case, the sox have not finish addressing the so call holes. Again, I don't believe this will be the last move. But I don't think they'll make moves as if it is a a 2 year window either. (which is all the Sox will have if they keep Alexei, trade top prospects for Jay Bruce, various rents, etc. as people on here suggest). This team won 73 games, and it's not like you can point to a bunch of injuries or inexplicably down years. These short term moves to power up the team at the cost of prospects will put the Sox in 85 win purgatory. I hope they make an aggressive move to get the young outfielder in here (by trading Alexei). I hope they sign a moderate starter (like Hammel) and pick up another reliever to get this team to .500. And then I'll wait a season, maybe 2, for the minor league pitching to get ready and hopefully Anderson.
  11. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 28, 2014 -> 01:56 AM) Signing a 35-year-old DH is about the biggest "WIN NOW" move they could have ever made. Rebuilding teams don't spend like that on aging assets that aren't easily moveable in a "flip for prospects" scenario like you can easily do with pitchers, and sometimes OFers. They spent a moderate $25 mill for 2 years, without giving up a draft choice, to get some competence at the DH and to give Abreu some much needed relief playing 1B. This team won 73 games last year. They'll be ready when some of these young players are ready to go. They aren't yet and you can't win without them.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 08:41 PM) White Sox management is sure saying different.. They haven't said that and they certainly haven't acted that way. What they said is they will put a competitive team on the field. And that they won't harm the long term plan in the process. They have taken a measured approach and gone after relatively inexpensive upgrades. If they were all in it would have been serious offers for v mart , Sandoval, miller and at least shields. I think they need several more moves And hope they make them. I just don't believe that those moves should include trading young talent for veterans.
  13. Flowers also had a much improved 2nd half. Just don't understand the idea of trading young talent for 30+ year olds in their descending arc , esp when there are far bigger holes than C
  14. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) Why do people still want Alexei traded after we signed LaRoche, which is a clear "win now" move? How do plan to contend by creating a hole at SS? I'm curious how people could think that would work. They aren't in a win now mode. They are in a we don't want totally suck now mode. Alexis window is 2015 and 2016. Sox best window not starting this year. He's the only trading chit they have that won't interfere with the real window. Thus trade him for the best group of Young players they can.
  15. HOlt is probably the guy they'd like to keep. He's certainly not a priority in moving considering they have challenges like Victorino (aging and injured), Craig (terrible year; big contract; poor defensively) and 1 year of Cespedes they'd like to move. And let's not help them out with any of this. Anyway, I wouldn't give much for a utility player anyway.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) Which report was that? Did we report something on Rondon regarding this? Want to make sure we fix it if needed. Sorry, it was the minor league guy on southside sox, not future sox. http://www.southsidesox.com/minors/2014/8/...league-baseball
  17. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:31 PM) We THINK Semien is capable of that but a sure way to upgrade is to get 1 or 2 WAR from reserves and getting rid of negative WAR players ( Viciedo). The Red Sox would be wise to sell high on him. He may never approach what he did last year again but I'd like to find out with him in a White Sox uniform . A crowded OF is exactly how the Sox grabbed Eaton and it now applies in Boston. He won't get a chance to start in Boston and at his age (26) he should be given a chance to find out if he is legit. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/69622576/v344...riple/?c_id=mlb Single off Danks that Eaton missed a shoestring catch that turned it into a triple. Well, it's not like Holt is much himself. He hit 4 homers in 449 plate appearances and checked in with a marginal .711 OPS. He is basically an infielder (and we're full) although he can play OF and he was never a top prospect. He's got nowhere near Eaton's credentials as a prospect. I wouldn't be interested in him unless he could be a full time player (we have enough 4th outfielders, 5th infielders and all of that) and I'm not sure he can be with that offense. He may be at top value but it isn't that high. He shouldn't cost much - although neither should any of those excess Red Sox outfielders. As I said repeatedly, I'd rather use Alexei to get a real long-term outfield solution.
  18. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:07 PM) The Fangraphs hilites were all on D plus that 2 War has to mean he had some defensive prowess also . Looks like he was best at SS and RF but since he played so many positions getting a grasp on his D is difficult. But is he the player from the 1st half or the 2nd half when pitchers probably made adjustments to him ? He had never played OF prior to his use by the Red Sox. I'm not all that interested in a jack of all trades. Semien can do that. But if he can play a full time outfield, a young OF like him is what I think the Sox need. They can be had cheap, could develop, as the Sox build.
  19. HOlt's kind of interesting -how's his D? I'd take a flyer on Bradley Jr too. However a)I don't think he comes that cheap and b)the odds are he's another Danks/Wise and I've had enough of that.
  20. Won't give up a second round pick, but will give up quality prospect(s) for a 1 year player?
  21. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 06:03 PM) Shack, I understand your perspective, I really do, but no matter what trade offers are out there they most likely wouldn't be in the Sox favor. Agree. No one will give for Sale what he's worth in prospects, which I figure are 1 top 10, 2 other top 30s, 2 other top 100s and 2 interesting A ball prospects. I'm not sure any team has that and, if they do, they won't give it. And I wouldn't either. No one will give his value.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 06:13 PM) no, give up who and can the sox get actual value from that trade. I can't think of a reason why they can't get actual value. I would think that, considering the market, that they would get plus value. Good prospects are currency, so I consider that value. and it's not like the Sale situation where if you traded him and the prospects crapped out, you've really messed yourself up.
  23. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 05:42 PM) I can see that positional players may be on the agenda come next draft. Yep. Yet another reason to trade...
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) LaRoche seems like a perfectly sensible cleanup hitter to me. Abreu would be more ideal but LaRoche is definitely the 2nd best choice on the team, and Ventura prefers Abreu hitting 3rd. Yes he does; don't know why, other than there is no 3 hitter on the team. LaRoche is bad against lefties....not great for a 4 hole hitter. We've had to deal with that from Dunn for years (although we expect Laroche to hit a lot better than Dunn).
  25. Nothing special about Carroll. Thing about Wilkins is that, while he's unlikely to hit in the majors, he could, and it would be at a higher level than Carroll pitches. Plus, there are no hitters on the 40 other than the Major League starters. And presuming that report on future sox was wrong about Rondon, the Sox don't seem to have much Rule 5 vulnerability.
