  1. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 05:35 PM) Kemp was an MVP caliber player. The leg injuries have changed that. He's not the 40 stolen base guy from 2011 (8 SB last year) and is probably average at best as a baserunner. The defensive metrics had him as the worst defensive player in all of baseball last year. Granted, he did a lot of that damage playing CF and is closer to acceptable at one of the corners. He was a top 15 or so hitter in baseball last year which is good. He's paid like an MVP, but he's not going to be that 2011 player again. Exactly. He WAS a MVP caliber player; today, he's a good hitter. He's trending downward. He's moping in L.A. and has a terrible contract. The Sox just got rid of bad contracts. They don't need someone else's problem. Trade Alexei for the best young talent the Sox can get.
  2. I must have looked up the wrong Diaz. So I guess Juan's in the mix. As for aggressive pursuit, the Dodgers may think offering Carl Crawford and cash is aggressive. I guess we'll find out.
  3. QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) You may be entirely correct. Isn't the key to who would play SS, the defensive skill of the respective candidates? We know that among all of the young middle infield prospects, only L. Garcia is a really good fielding SS. This is all speculation, but Diaz is 30 I think, had a brief stint in the majors a few years back..he's a AAA player. And we know that L Garcia can field the position so I don't see Diaz with any real chance. If Semien can handle the position defensively, fantastic. I thought Sanchez was a SS more than a 2B. Maybe I'm wrong there.
  4. QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) It appears that the front office has addressed this need, and that Juan Diaz has now been added to the mix. Where would you think that he ranks as the most likely candidate to play SS, this season, if Alexei is traded? He doesn't. He was signed for Charlotte, likely, though, because the middle infield herd will be thinned.
  5. Diaz is a AAA shortstop. He was signed for Charlotte. As any sort of prospect to make the Major League team, he's behind 5 ML ready or near-ready Sox Middle infielders (Johnson, Semien, Saldino, Sanchez, L Garcia). L Garcia can field the position and that may have to do for a year. Agree with SoCal on Kemp. Don't want the ego, whining or large contract.
  6. L Garcia can field his position. That may (have to be) good enough for a year if they trade Alexei.
  7. Van Slyke is no throw-in. I'd prefer him (or a number of younger outfielders on their ascending arc) to Kemp, all things considered. I also agree with the comment above about the zeal to become re-encumbered with lengthy and expensive deals.
  8. Is this an actual published rumor or just speculation? Anyway I'd prefer Van Slyke and an extra prospect than a big contractual and perhaps personality liability.
  9. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 12:13 PM) Do Joe Savery ,Logan Kensing and Juan Diaz count as our next move ? That's a "We apologize, Charlotte, for giving you a woefully awful team last year; we will do better" move. Juan Diaz might portend a future major league move, as Charlotte has its shortstop and, thus, won't need Sanchez.
  10. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) I was wanting pitchers from the dodgers and 1 of the 2 whom I thought the dodgers would give in rtn, we got, Garcia. he is being added to the Cuban factor that the sox already has. now, if the dodger still will give the sox more, esp in a trade for Alexei, they really need to sweeten that deal. (dang after I finally learned to spell his name) side note. I am still stunned at their TV deal. I am absolutely okay with moving Alexei for an outfielder with some upside plus a couple of good pitching prospects. Sox want to compete this year, but it's not an "all in" year. The Sox have MI depth; they have absolutely 0 in the outfield. Young pitching should be stockpiled. Through it all, Alexei was only a 3.3 WAR player. My preference (as I've said a few times) would be Van Slyke from the Dodgers. It would have to be a lot of plus in the prospect side to take Crawford and even more for Ethier. Maybe the Mets, but they have nothing in the outfield to send. Or maybe a 3-way with an assortment of teams (Dodgers get Alexei; Mariners get Kemp; Sox get Saunders plus 2 pitching prospects from Mariners).
  11. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 02:04 PM) Are you serious? You wouldn't do Sanchez for Castro straight up??? That's mind-boggling crazy to me. Even if you don't think he's an upgrade over Flowers, he'd give us a great tandem of catchers to work with when we currently don't even have a backup. Also, Sanchez's ceiling is solid middle infielder and I really think he'll end up being just a utility guy (although a good one). That has some value, but let's not carried away here. There aren't a lot good catchers out there and two years of Castro would be far more valuable than six years of a reserve infielder. Sox are going to need Sanchez after they trade Alexei I just don't understand the zeal to trade assets for marginal upgrades, esp with a team thin on starting pitching, no LF, and thin on quality prospects. I also think Flowers, who posted similar offensive numbers as Castro, is under appreciated for his work with pitchers, holding runners, despite being over-used (to protect Nieto) last year. Flowers had a higher WAR than both Monetero and Castro last year, and yet people want to use scarce resource for these players. I like Fowler, but he's a 1 year rent. He should be on our radar a year from now.
  12. QUOTE (daggins @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 09:08 AM) I was reading this and now i'm convinced that Cahill will be a White Sock in 2015. If he's healthy, he is still a decent pitcher. Strong GB rate for his career, RH, won't take much to acquire. It's a gamble, of course, but his 2016 and 2017 years are options that can be declined if he stinks. The trouble with cahill is that, except or one year, he's been average to poor as a starting pitcher. (one year reputations live on). Now the article that i read said he was good coming out of the pen (I didn't verify the numbers). He + a lot of cash, could probably be had for a C prospect (certainly wouldn't pay any more than that) so it may be worth the risk. Re his option, there is not a reasonable scenario under which that that option would be exercised. Even if he's a stud reliever next year, 13 million is way too high.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) Leury and Rondon both were in High A as 20 year olds and put up prett similar offensive numbers. If you don't like Leury, you most likely won't like Rondon. I don't know exactly when he signed, but I find it hard to believe a team would be willing to stash him away on their major league roster for a year just to see if he may develop. There haven't been many rule 5 guys who became better than average since they changed the rules. I don't. Rondon can field the position right now. To suggest that Rondon won't develop because Leury didn't develop is ridiculous. Oldsox says that the article is wrong, so it's probably moot anyway.
  14. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 06:18 AM) I think I'm probably in the vast minority, but I'd trade Q for Bruce straight up. That's assuming Bruce is back to 100%. I think he'd bring more to the Sox than Quintana. I know people mention his contract but 17 mill, or whatever he's scheduled to make, doesn't seem all that bad when the Sox just gave 12.5 mill to a 35 year old part time DH. Maybe I overrate Bruce, but a 27 year old who has put up his kind of numbers is the type of guy that can be a major building block. Q is a better pitcher than Bruce is a position player (even using his pre 2014 numbers). Bruce is Carlos Lee without being a pure clown defensively. He's good, not great. What is that worth?
  15. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 12:09 AM) doesn't have to do with his time??? pretty much like micah?? This article suggests he can be drafted. I find it hard to understand how he's not protected, given some of the mediocrities (and worse) on the 40 man. L Garcia defines credulity if Rondon isn't protected. (and I realize that Ventura apparently liked L Garcia despite his complete inability to hit). http://www.southsidesox.com/minors/2014/8/...league-baseball I believe Myles Jaye is eligible as well. some people were high on him a year ago, although he didn't seem to progress much.
  16. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 06:23 PM) I don't see the problem with poop man. I would s*** if somehow Hahn pulled off trade built around an Alexei/ Danks for Kemp/ Van Slyke swap. I mean, there would be nut filled brownies everywhere! Sheeeeiiit me timbers! I want an Alexei for Van Slyke and prospects swap. Kemp is whining - don't want that on this team. And he's specifically whining about a situation he'd face in Chicago - playing LF.
  17. He'll be 40 next year and had an OPS of .417. Good lord. Flowers does all of the handle pitchers/throw out runner type work just fine anyway.
  18. People have speculated Rondon rushing up at short next year if they trade Alexei. Well he's not on the 40 man and I believe he's Rule 5 eligible. Isn't it possible he's better than L Garcia (and his .399 OPS) right now? Or couldn't a team just take him and stash him and just use him sparingly like the Sox did with Neito last year? Sox have several bullpen-flyer types (Garcia, Cleto, Snodgress) on the 40 man and several low-upside (Danks, Rienzo, Carroll) types and L Garcia. IMO, a stud fielding young low-minors SS is far more valuable than ceiling 5th starters and utility infielders.
  19. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 12:38 AM) I think another possibility for the Sox next move could Edinson Volquez. He's right handed, can slot in as a #3, looking for a 2-3 year deal at around 9-10M annually. Would leave the Sox with money to spend elsewhere. If somehow Hahn was able to deal Danks, were looking at a rotation of Sale, Q, Volquez, Rodon and Noesi with Bassitt as the #6 long man in the pen. Not too shabby. I think there are a lot of warning signs with him Until last year he was dreadful for about 5 years. Last year, he had his best career WHIP/ERA by far, yet his K rate was down. Not convinced he repeats 2014.
  20. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 01:45 AM) A trade of Alexei makes no sense after this LaRoche deal, unless Hahn is acquiring another SS from somewhere. The LaRoche deal is a "win now" move. Rebuilding teams shouldn't be signing 35-year-old DHs to $12.5M/year contracts. I think it's more of a let's be competitive now move. From a different angle it actually allows the Sox to trade Alexei, keep building, while still fielding a decent team. As they know, this 63 and 73 win stuff is unacceptable to Sox fans, rebuilding or not.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 10:56 PM) Of course, the risk is buying veterans like Keppinger, Duke and LaRoche at high points when the odds are good they won't be able to sustain that level of success. At least they're mitigating risk by not spreading it out over 4-5 seasons with these signings. There's that. They're not franchise-altering missteps like Dunn and Danks. Duke and Laroche certainly could regress, but Keppinger is an anomaly, not the norm. He just didn't want to play.
  22. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:21 PM) A trade involving the Padres where they get Viciedo and Semien, and the Sox get Tyson Ross. That's the kind of trade I like - spare parts leaving the southside....good player in return.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 10:50 PM) They will have to decide in the next couple of weeks whether Viciedo's worth more or less the same ($4-4.5 million) as DeAza and Beckham in that role...assuming they find a corner of. They've got Markakis, Cruz, Tomas, Torii Hunter, Me. Cabrera, Aoki and Rasmus remaining on the board. Yea, I think they'll keep Viciedo for 1 more year and see. I don't think they'll sign any of those guys. Maybe Rasmus I think they'll sign 2 more pitchers and trade for an OF. I hope it involves Alexei but it may not.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:41 PM) C.Rondon in 2015? Just wow. It didn't work to carry Brian Anderson in 2006 when we had one of the best offenses in the league...andRondon wouldn't come close to Anderson's numbers offensively. Leury Garcia would make fewer errors than Rondon and nobody wants to see him on the roster even. A) the 2006 team did win 90 games B) Mackowiak played a lot of CF C)CF is a more offensive position than SS Yes, I'm on the trade Alexei bandwagon. D)Rushing Rondon would basically ensure he hits like L Garcia for his entire career. Let's see if he can develop some sort of stroke first.
