QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) Rodon should be a starting pitcher with the Sox the moment that he is one of the five best starting pitchers available, regardless of whether that's April 1, June 1, or September 1. Not with him, his agent, and 0% chance to sign him to a control deal. And no wasting him on bullpen duty either.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 04:28 PM) Really want LaRoche, I would sign him to a one year deal with an option for a second. He would really upgrade the team's defense, and he is a left handed bat. Laroche isn't good defensively. Looks like Dunn to me...Lots of Ks, not as many homers or walks, bit better batting average, older (than when we had dunn)

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 07:10 PM) Or they could just make a reasonable offer that Hahn takes because it benefits our team? But it's hard to see who that would include without their top 3 (whom I agree would be an overpay on their part). Zach lee was terrible this year and appears on decline. Chris Anderson has some good (and bad) peripherals and is a long way away. Maybe if they send 5 of these types or way, but nothing really seems to fit. Sox need young player so forget those old outfielders. No one's mentioned Scott Van Slyke - kind of a late-bloomer; not sure what our interest would be, but he looks interesting, although he's no spring chicken himself.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) I think it's crazy that some fans think the Sox could get Seager for Alexei, which would never happen and others are willing to take Schebler for Alexei. These are two way different ends of the spectrum. The Dodgers really aren't much of a match with the Sox in terms of prospects. Even if they felt inclined to move Pederson, they could get better value of moving him for someone other than Alexei. Looks that way. They have 3 elite prospects who are worth more than Alexei and a bunch of mediocre prospects. Maybe the Sox could add something to pry one of their elites, but I'd doubt it.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
GreenSox replied to oneofthemikes's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 03:51 PM) It's not though. It's a low risk low reward move. At best, he's a solid reliever (aka 1.5 WAR), at worst, he's not even a passable reliever and he gets cut (they eat 10 million). If the downside is "eating 10 million" and the upside is "1.5 WAR reliever" it's the def of a low risk low reward move. Middle case is he's a 1 WAR reliever and everyone goes home happy. Yea the 3rd year is a bit much but whatever, it's a 3rd year at 5 million. Relief pitcher signings are low-reward because they are relief pitchers. The top relievers have wars of 1.8-2.5. -
A bench player is a bad player who only comes in as a sub. A platoon player is a player who can't hit against one side of pitcher but is effective, starter quality, against the other side. Ethier cannot hit lefties. IF last year was an anomaly (big IF), he's a platoon player. He's 32 - ignore decline at your risk. The enduring love for declining veterans is beyond me If we're trading Alexei, trade him for the best package of young players that we can get.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) No. He will just be dead money like Keppinger. He's younger than Keppinger. And I don't see any evidence that duke simply doesn't want to play baseball anymore. -
QUOTE (peppers312 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 03:08 PM) yeah if Alexei is going anywhere, Rick better make sure that team is taking Danks and his contract too. Why? While Danks isn't worth the money, he's not a negative player either. With the sox in good budget mode, to use Alexei to dump Danks' salary would be terrible.

It's pricey, but worth the risk I think. He's a groundball pitcher, which is what the Sox want. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) If you read the proposals and don't think some are expecting to pay pennies on the dollar for LA Dodgers talent, you are higher than Snoop. If you think KW has nothing to do with White Sox activity, you are higher than Snoop. So I really don't think you are in a postion to help. First the Sox need to trade him for young talent. Not the aging veterans. Keep him if they want veterans. They aren't getting Kemp/Puig and they aren't getting their top 3 prospects. But they have several other really good ones who they might be able to work in. The only veterans that should interest the Sox are Puig or Kemp (doesn't interest me, but I can see the allure; Ethier is useless - I wouldn't trade Danks for him) and they aren't trading either of those 2 for Alexei. Maybe Van Slyke, but that's doubtful too. No problem with the Sox dealing with the Dodgers.

QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 02:03 PM) Dan Hayes @CSNHayes · 12m 12 minutes ago Rick Hahn, Andrew Friedman got creative, funky on Jesse Crain trade. Relationship could aid an Alexei Ramirez deal http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox/histor...i-ramirez-trade What was creative about the non-prospects the Sox got for Crain? why would a deal for Alexei require anything creative? Avoid their 3rd tier and below prospects and their rapidly declining veterans.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
GreenSox replied to oneofthemikes's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Solid He's not strictly situational, which is great. -
Ethier is 32, makes $18 mill and is, at best, a platoon hitter at this point. Why?
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) Would Kemp + Cash make sense? Absolutely not. This trade needs to help us in the future. Youth. If we want today, keep Alexei. Any of those 3 surplus outfielders would not be considered "Aggressive" pursuit.

Mets/LAD/NYy interested in Alexei, according to Levine
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 11:31 PM) Because Hamels isn't coming with a $125-175 million price tag and huge long-term commitment that will make nearly every team uncomfortable on its backend with the ages/wear and tear on those two guys (multiple playoff runs to extend their seasons) and the spate of TJ surgeries. Strictly for teams in "win now" mode like the Royals two offseasons ago when they dealt Myers and Odorizzi for Shields and Davis. Hammels is $110 million. Teams will give $20 mill easy to save their prospects. I'm trying to figure out who exactly which team pay Scherzer what Boras wants. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) I don't see any way Philly would make that deal. The problem Philly has is Lester and Scherzer. Why give up players when you don't have to? -
QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Yeah the Cardinals are really going to regret getting an accumulated 24 WAR OF who is 25 years old. They are not getting an accumulated 24 WAR. They are getting ONE season of the future WAR. Sox are in no position to make such a move.
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) They traded two. Miller has TOR stuff if, he is still young and really just had a bad season which happens to young guys and Tyrell Jenkins who has the stuff to be a #2 or 3. Really great trade for the Braves getting two really high ceiling rotation guys for one season of a mediocre offensive OF and an overpriced RP. It was a great trade for the Braves. They dealt him to someone who had the depth and need to overpay.
-
There's nothing to lament here. The Sox have a rotation that includes Carroll, Noesi and Danks. What good young pitcher(s) with years of team control did yall want the Sox to trade for 1 year of Heyward? Quintana and Danish for Heyward and the middle reliever? Or maybe Montas and Danish for Heyward by himself? Teams like the Cards can trade for rents. Teams like the Sox cannot (or at least should not).

White Sox focused on RH SP, LH bat, bullpen
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
1 bullpen pitcher, fine. But don't sign 2 high priced bullpen pitchers. our O, D and starting pitching need a lot of work. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 11:06 PM) went on to say that KW is operating under immunity. What does that mean?
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) Yeah, I get he was technically productive last year with the bat, I just don't have a lot of faith it's sustainable going forward. His BABIP was nearly 50 points higher than his career average and his K % & BB % were 36.0% & 5.7% respectively. Those numbers just don't add up for a successful 2015 IMO. Additionally, he's an incredibly streaky player. I know advanced metrics don't account for context, but I believe guys like him are worth less than stats like WAR might say otherwise. Over time, consistent scoring gives you a better chance of winning and more often than not he's a black hole at the bottom of the lineup. I just don't like him as an offensive and one flukey season isn't going to change my perception of him. And castro had a BABIP of .350 in his career year; .294 last year. Neither of these guys is trustworthy. Castro's only 6 months younger.
-
I'm not a big fan of chasing bullpen pitchers, but this guy is the best of this crop, imo.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 07:01 PM) While catcher may not be our biggest hole, I have zero faith that Flowers is the long-term answer. If I'm Hahn, I'm checking in on both Castro & Grandal in case their markets are smaller than expected. Both guys have much more upside and a better chance of being long-term solutions than Tyler IMO. From what I've read, they're pleased with how Flowers handles the staff. He was also top tier last year in throwing out runners. He also played a lot and was a real warrior out there. Catro's offense will never be great anyway- it may be good for a catcher - but again, when you are well below replacement in LF and at DH, that's a tertiary upgrade. And he was terrible last year. Aren't there some hitters we can trade for? Sign Sandoval and move Conor for an outfielder, perhaps? Move Alexei for young pitching.
