QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Mar 26, 2015 -> 05:57 PM) Taijuan Walker has looked excellent this spring. If the White Sox didn't fancy themselves contenders, he'd be in the rotation getting experience. They fancy themselves contenders and he's likely to be in the rotation by June, if not sooner. And if he isn't, that likely means that both Danks and Noesi are pitching well, which would be a miracle.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2015 -> 06:44 PM) Youre worrying about a pitcher being terrible and then suggested Cleto? LOL Good point. For some reason, I think he has some skill. But yea, he probably should be cut.
-
Carroll is terrible. Penny appears to be likewise. Pick the best pitcher rather than worry about a long man. Guerra and either Cleto or Albers

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) There's no amount of injuries that would put Hawkins in KC on opening day. They'd trade for Jordan Danks and Dayan Viciedo before Hawkins made the opening day roster. Engel Beltre is still in camp and has a small amount of major league experience. He'd make it in an emergency. Shows how thin the Sox still are.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 01:53 PM) He is never going to be a good hitter, but chances are most of the White Sox prospects will not be good hitters in the major leagues either. He does offer other things many White Sox prospects do not. And if he can work on keeping the ball out of the air, he may develop into a guy whose offense is good enough. Agree. You don't cut Leury. A full season of Charlotte ABs should do him well. I guess they can't take him off the 40 man without exposing him? Wilkins too. Too soon to cut him.

Surkamp on trading block, roster moves coming
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 23, 2015 -> 01:33 PM) There are your presumable 21 locks. Of those, the following need to be added to the 40: Soto and Johnson. Most likely one position player and three pitchers. Four other spots would be available to these nine players: Shuck, Kottaras**, Carroll**/Penny**, Cleto, Webb, Surkamp, Albers** and Guerra. Bolded means out of options, ** means would need to be added the roster. -------- My personal guess would be Shuck, Penny**, Albers** and Guerra grabbing the last four spots. Leaving four players to be bounced from the 40 man. I would guess Cleto and Surkamp are gone and Jones goes to the 60 day DL. Leaving one other person to get bounced between Wilkins/Smith/Brantly. It would certainly make sense that it would be a catcher as it would be superfluous to carry five catchers on the 40 man. Clearly the Sox will dump 2 of Kottras/Soto/Brantly. Now we come to Cleto - if Cleto's out of options, then he either makes the 25 or any team can grab him, right? We'll he's not making the 25 so obviously he goes. That leaves Carroll or Surkamp. Carroll was already waived once and no one bit. Waive him again. I prefer Surkamp anyway. Now I'm assuming Penny is viewed as a legit 5th starter. If he's not, he's on that boat out. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2015 -> 09:35 AM) The Astrodome was a different place to see a game. It was soooo big, and after growing up at old Comiskey, it was completely a different experience. I went there a lot as a kid, and it seemed huge to me. But it could fit inside the superdome. I went back in the late 1990s, and I realized that while it looked huge sitting in the stands the concourses were tiny and other aspects of the place were rather snug.

Surkamp on trading block, roster moves coming
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Sox loaded the 40 man with a bunch of relief pitches that throw hard or otherwise showed flashes, but haven't succeeded for whatever reason. They won't get anything for Surkamp or any of them. They'll have to put them back where they found them...on the waiver wire. Now if they want to trade Putnam or Petricka, they'll get some bites. -
Plentiful pitching will be avail on mid-season trade market

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 22, 2015 -> 09:21 AM) http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/ba...ut-the-red-sox/ Including Cole Hamels... It would be a ridiculous price. And he's poor against the AL. My goodness, is Sale, Shark, Q, Rodon and whomever not sufficient? Jackson has no better chance of being a decent 5 than Penny, Danks or Noesi. -
Brad Penny touching 94, leading candidate for 5th starter

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 02:57 PM) Noesi? LOL yea. Thanks for the correction. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 09:59 AM) A quick look at those who aren't contractually guaranteed a 25-man spot have been doing in the past week, whose stocks are up and down, and who is now out of camp. Article here. I'm glad to know that there have been reports of some good Soto defense. Re Hawkins, fwiw, in one of Law's recent stories, he said that while Hawkins looked good, a scout who has been following the Sox told him that he hasn't been challenged much with the curveball this spring.

Micah Johnson should be White Sox second baseman
GreenSox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2015 -> 08:44 AM) I'm now fully in on Micah as the 2B. Got into a discussion with James Fegan (from The Catabird Seat blog), as he feels Micah isn't there yet. So here's a sort of response to his piece, where I make the case for Micah as the Opening Day 2B. Agree? Disagree? Not sure yet? Grammatical errors? I'm 50/50 on it. you both make compelling cases. Oh I have no doubt that he's our best option, but I hate to risk him developing bad habits if he struggles with the bat. He's such a patient hitter right now. -

QUOTE (WBWSF @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 08:43 AM) Jackson was a decent pitcher when he was with the White Sox. As long as he doesn't cost the White Sox anything. I wouldn't be surprised to see him picked up by the White Sox. Absolutely not. He was far worse than either {edit} Noesi or Danks last year. Penny was a decent pitcher with the Dodgers and Marlins, too. -
If Beckham had accomplished exactly what he did, but in a different uniform, there would be far more acceptance of his spot on the roster.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2015 -> 09:05 AM) Paulino had upside, but Beckham has none. That just isn't accurate. The fact is the White Sox have brought loads of bench players from other teams in the past 10 years and they have been awful, even if Soxtalk favorites. Cintron and Mackowiak right away. I know, they sucked, but the argument will be they had upside. Who cares about upside if it isn't coming out. Gordon Beckham has as much upside as any of these dopes brought in over the past years: Cintron Mackowiak Erstad Richar Toby Hall Kotsay Nix Lillibridge Castro Teahen Milledge O-Dog Hudson Fukudome Olmed Tyler Greene Casper Wells Tekotte Of all the guys they brought in, the one guy that worked out OK was Omar Vizquel. Yet none of them get the mention Beckham does if he goes 0-2 in a game the first couple weeks of spring training. Please - Mack and Cintron had no upside. They were utility players. The only ones with upside were Richar (who was acquired to be a starting 2B - we gave away what was a top prospect for him) and Millege, who was a failed prospect but still had a chance. (while we failed on Millege, we succeeded with De Aza). the others were bench players or just plain bad. What this list shows is the Sox enduring love for bad veterans and the Sox preference of (or is it bias toward) proven mediocrity or worse over young players with upside. See Wise over and over again. And, frankly, there's a lot of love for the mediocre veteran on this board as well.

Brad Penny touching 94, leading candidate for 5th starter
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2015 -> 09:46 AM) The link is from another story, but this was worth posting separately. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/new-yor...res-vibe-031715 If Penny's the leading candidate for 5th starter, who is the 4th starter? -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 17, 2015 -> 07:37 PM) I'd rather take chances at guys who actually offer upside than going conservative with a Beckham type. I agree. But this org has loved their bad veterans for a while
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 17, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) To be fair, the other "candidates" we are talking about here are a bunch of no hit infielders. Johnson's speed at least has the chance to be a game changing skill. NONE of the other possess anything like that. He's also patient with the bat. He's much more talented than the other guys. My only concern is with rushing him.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) Why don't you use his line from last year like you did Rickie Weeks? Besides a .687 OPS is better than what Conor is going to give you vs. LHP. Maybe, but Gillaspie still only has less than 200 PA hitting against lefties. And .687 is still terrible. And just to clarify, I'm not in favor of exchanging Beckham for some equally medicore/bad veteran 2B in another uniform. Rather put Sanchez or someone out there.
-
Is Beckham still hitting .050? That' s not worthy of an utility infielder spot. There's no more growth to him...he's not a young player. I'd rather see Sanchez there. The problem with our bench is that we have guys who are good fielders, but not great fielders; and they can't hit a lick. So they can't really do much. If you want a fielder, have a great one like Bradley Jr or Peter in ST Louis. As for pinch running, if they don't score, they then have to take the field and may have to bat. I saw ABreu pulled far too many times fo my tastes for a pinch runner anyway.
-
I believe that there were 76 relievers in MLB that averaged at least a K per inning. The Sox had 1 - and that was Cleto in limited duty. (veal, too, in 6IP). The guys were young, so they can improve; but I also don't think we had many "must carry" on that staff last year. As for Crain, he hasn't pitched in nearly 2 years and is 34. Even if he does come back, at what level of effectiveness will he deliver?

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 08:14 PM) Why does Micah Johnson need to be a 2 to 3 WAR player to warrant the 2B job when you think Sanchez is a 1 WAR player? If their performances are going to be even remotely similar, then you're better off giving the everyday at-bats to the guy who has a chance of being a long-term solution at the position. I think the vast majority of front office types & scouts would agree that guy is Micah. I will counter that. Because Micah has a high ceiling, he should be on the 25 only if truly ready to face major league pitching. Just beating out Sanchez doesn't mean he's really ready. Putting him in the majors before he can hit major league pitching, often stunts prospects and brings on bad habits.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 12:47 PM) Interesting idea, but wouldn't people who just spam Abreu/LaRoche rather than vary their picks get more points? There should be some sort of "Abreu twice per week" limit. But you only get 1 point for an Abreu homer. If you pick Avi, you get 3 points.
-
That's kind of a strange ranking; Tigers and Angels have farm systems at the bottom, but they are in the top 1/2 on this list.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 04:49 PM) With Johnson apparently running (lol) away with the 2B job, Beckham is really only considered for the UTIL INF job. And he'd be fine for that, hitting against LHP a lot. It's him or Carlos Sanchez in that role (theoretically could be both but not likely). I think they're both fine for that. Are they giving Beckham any time at short?
