  1. What has Manto done to get canned? He didn't intentionally walk Chris Getz. He didn't pitch Reed 8/11 days or 6 in a row when the season was beyond lost. He didn't start bunting and doing other choke maneuvers with a 3 game lead with 3 weeks to go. He didn't manage the team to 100 losses. He wasn't responsible for lack of fundamental play, season long clowning on the basepaths or poor defense. He didn't automatically intentionally walk an opposing batter whenever a base was open with less than 2 outs in a walk off situation (that poor decision-making itself cost the Sox several games this season). I guess what Manto has done is that he did not play for the Sox in the 1990s. Manto may be a bad coach, but Ventura is incompetent at this point in his career. He should manage in the minors for 5 years and then try this again.
  2. It's outrageous, really. Lose a 100 games with a team that they thought was a fringe-contender, and bring back the manager. The only reason is because his name is Ventura. Just as soon sign De Wayne Wise back and his .267 career OBP to be the top bench bat again.
  3. And then there's the VEntura strategy. Over-use pitchers, never sit Alexei (he still won't in September garbage time) intentionally walk Chris Getz...heck, whenever a team has a runner on and base open when they can walk off, intentionally walk the batter to clog the base (that nonsense has cost us several games). 2 runners on down 2 in the 9th? Bunt the ball. He's a lousy manager all the way around.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 11:43 PM) Why does Robin all of a sudden want to manage forever? If his stance has completely changed, my guess is he'll sign that multi-year extension if it's offered again this offseason. If we suck defensively and on the basepaths again next year, Robin should be on the hotseat. He probably won't be, though, cause Sox are not going to be in the news much next season if we are out of it in May. My guess is attendance also will take a big hit this time if we suck a second consecutive season. Next season? What, pray tell, has he done to keep his job after this season? If his name weren't Robin Ventura, he'd out a week from yesterday.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 04:59 PM) He gets one more year at the very least. Ozzie had a year like this and they won a division the next season. Remind me what year that was again when Ozzie won 60? It must be nice when the non-performing employee get to decide whether he stays or not.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 15, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) And as far as I can tell the team forgot to hire any staff other than a pitching coach this season, that hurts too. Can't figure out what they were thinking going into the season with no manager or practice. Let's just hope they hire professional manager next year, instead of a JR/KW fav.
  7. I don't root for the Sox to lose. I do root for the Astros, marlins, Cubs, Brewers, Padres, Giants, Twins to win though. (did I miss anybody?).
  8. Axe looks finished. But Ventura leaving him in to give up 8 hits and 2 walks over 2 innings is amateur hour. Ventura had to see all 8 hits and 2 walks to decide he didn't have it?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 31, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) We needed Lindstrom in July? I thought the team was more than out of the race by then. In the fangraphs world he's already put up $4 million in value this year. In the B-R world he's put up more. We needed him to pitch well in July so we could trade him. We sure as heck don't need him now.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 31, 2013 -> 11:54 AM) Matt Lindstrom is making a much stronger case for having his option picked up and being the veteran setup guy in the pen than I ever expected him to. Wonderful. When we needed him to pitch well....i.e. July..he was atrocious. Isn't his option for like $4 mill?
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 25, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) No it isn't. Wil Myers is a much higher rated prospect than Garcia. The recency of Myers and Segura are a reason why no A prospects were exchanged at the deadline. Hahn found an A- he liked and perhaps graded as an A so that's good.
  12. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 10:57 PM) I guess it's relevant to this thread, is anyone else disappointed about the prospects we received from the Red Sox? I mean Montas has a big arm and control issues so he's a wild card but the other two? eh What strikes me is that the Tigers gave up Garcia AND a relief pitcher for Iglesias. It's hard to believe that they had to throw in extra. I would have thought that the reliever should have come to us (don't know if we liked him in particular, but his value seemed like it should have come to us). But I guess Hahn finally got someone to offer up an impact prospect he liked, so he jumped on it, understandably. I didn't think we'd get an A prospect for him and we did, so I'm satisfied. I would suggest that we start talking to the Orioles. They seem to give up solid prospects for mediocre starting pitchers. And send the relievers to Arizona - they give up starters for middle relief. Detroit might see Iglesias as an impact player for them. He's a top notch defender on a team whose left side defense is otherwise bottom-notch.
  13. A raw 17 year old is one thing, but Mitchell was a raw college player when we drafted him. He started in a hole and then the injury just dug him deep.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 24, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) I want LaRussa if Robin decides to retire. Can't the Sox talk LaRussa into coming back? He should be refreshed by now. Just think if he signs for five-years with the plan winning a WS in years three, four and five. He'd be an all-time Chicago icon if he can turn us into the Cardinals. Amen. Or even if he doesn't decide to retire. And no Scoisia. he should take a year off and reflect, observe, work for ESPN anyway.
  15. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) One thing to remind everyone about Santiago is he only had 27 minor league starts. The kid's control could easily improve with more experience as a starter, which is scary given how good his stuff is and how well he's pitched at the major league level so far despite being pretty wild. Give him some more time with Cooper and we may have something special. I would want a king's ransom for him and that's not Logan Morrison. I agree. We have several good young pitchers on this team, although Robin Ventura insists on piling up the pitches on them to win a big 60 this season. The Sox have the salary room to fix this team pretty quickly. But one thing we must insist upon is good defense up the middle. If we have to live with a few bad bats for a year or so, so be it.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:22 AM) If you can get him for less then by all means yu do it. What did you think of the return for Alex Rios? The Rios return is the return they should expect for Lo Mo. Not a very good young starting pitcher.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) Why is there no second thought if a team has an all right handed rotation, yet 4 or more lefties im a rotation is taboo? As far as I am concerned the Sox should worry about quality, not from which side they throw. There are more right-handed hitters and more of the best hitters are right handed. No harm in shopping him. His only problem this year has been giving up homers. A bigger home park might minimize that. The Sox have other needs.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 09:18 AM) Technically no we won't because we're unlikely to be told that he's been put on waivers and passed through. Isn't the list of players who've been waived readily available?
  19. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 07:20 AM) Maybe. Maybe not. Easy enough to find out. Waive him.
  20. QUOTE (mike89128 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 03:57 PM) Yahoo Sports has a good article on Viciedo. Tone of the article suggests Viciedo will not be back next year. Article says Manto, Baines and Ventura have basically given up trying to install some disciple to his swing. His jammed thumb from last night might open the door for Garcia soon. Wouldn't be surprised if Viciedo goes on the DL. No point in giving him away. Selling low is the wrong way to operate. they also say Viciedo has a very fast bat and good swing plane. Manto can't seem to fix him; maybe if we bring in a 2nd professional to work with him it might help.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 5, 2013 -> 10:02 AM) For how little the Sox paid him, Wise was an incredibly productive and valuable player during his White Sox career, both tenures. He was a good 4th outfielder and he should have always remained that, as he was never qualified to be a starting player. It was not his fault that he was thrust into that opportunity in 2009, and he was given unjust grief due to Ozzie Guillen. Without his production down the 2008 stretch run, the Sox don't secure a playoff birth. I still remember watching his grand slam on ESPN against the Tigers after Marcus Thames hit a grand slam to tie the game and that was such a relief, because the Sox were seemingly prone to blowing leads down the stretch in 2008. Thankfully, everything worked out. There sure was something crazy about that team and hitting grand slams, as they had 12 of them that season. He caught the ball for Beurhle and he got hot in 2008 after Quentin went down. But for most of the time with the Sox, he was productive in the sense that the 2013 Sox offense is productive His OBP with the sox is .266; his OPS is 661. You could find dozens of players at the minimum salary who can best that We caught some lightening from him in 2008 and that's it.
  22. Move De Aza to LF. Garcia in right. Sign a defensive CF. Dump Rios. Wait for prospects, or sign a FA when we're close to being ready. Ethier? Good gracious he's owed nearly $90 million and he's not much better than Rios.
  23. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Aug 3, 2013 -> 09:07 PM) Nice to Johnson bouncing back from that groin injury. He should be the next guy called up. He at the least deserves a look in September. No real need to start the clock ticking on these guys right now. Call them up in September. Garcia, of course, already has a ticking clock.
  24. You should have upped that offer, Arizona.
  25. I have no interested in a has-been manager with no history of success. Of course some managers who haven't won much are still capable and understand the proper decisions to make and can execute them...they may have just had teams that lacked talent. A young manager with fresh thinking who has been sitting at the side of a successful manager should work. No more insiders; no forcing legacy coaches on a manager.
