  1. That was an incredibly lazy play by Rios. How in the world can he start tomorrow after that?
  2. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) Give them Peavy Danks Thornton get back Young and Holland . Pass Need someone who can play the field. Young is beyond awful defensively. And we'd be down to 4 starters.
  3. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) I don't get this deal at all for the Astros. Congrats to the phillies for getting a great ball player without having to give up any MLB ready talent. That's just it: Pence isn't a great player. He's a very good player, who would be a great support player to some real sluggers. He's power is only OK as his is OBP. Astros had to make this move, really.
  4. And Hunter Pence has been pulled in Milwaukee, if yall didn't know.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:25 PM) This, my friends, is why I "overrate" prospects. In the last three years the Phillies have acquired Lee, Oswalt, Halladay and now Pence. And they still get to keep Brown. That's because they develop a lot of prospects. If we did that, we could cull a few out to other teams, instead of trading the only/best ones we have.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 07:59 PM) Still waiting patiently for Santos Rodriguez, Gilmore and Tyler Flowers to show something. Indeed Not only can the Braves scout, they scout their own prospects. They know which ones to dump. There are exceptions (some that went to the Rangers), but in the 90s, and most of the time today, they trade the right ones away. I'd prefer to deal with the Phillies.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 02:54 PM) Why do you say that. Bourn is in his prime and has put up pretty respectable leadoff numbers and plays good defense. And clearly the Sox are going to need a top of the order hitter as they don't have any that profile in the system/currently on the club. On top of that you get another good prospect or two back. Not saying it is the preferred approach but who knows if it is realistic to expect a package of Brown plus another top prospect from the Phillies. Bourne is a fast slap-hitter having a career year. He's represented by Boras and I think has a year and the rest of this season left on his deal. Pass.
  8. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) You're crazy. I'd say the Royals would have a 10% shot at beating them. Not in October.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 10:14 AM) Nothing there "Frank Wren's dignity" has been edited out. Whoops - something else is back.
  10. QUOTE (Sockin @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) Everyone looks at Carlos' Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Quentin Jeff Schultz says it isn't true though. That's someone just messing with it. Look at the 2 lines about the trade.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 03:15 PM) It also frees up about $20 million next year. It's one thing if we spend it; but are you sure JR won't decide that the lower payroll is the new budget limit and put the $20 mill in his pocket?
  12. QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:43 PM) If Q goes and Viciedo comes up to play RF, we have to deal for a 3B in order to offset the loss of Q and replace Morel who just isn't getting it done. The only problem, what 3B could they get. ARam from the Cubs would be nice, but that option next year is too big. Any other 3B out there who can help right now? 3B is just so shallow nowadays. Ty Wigginton could be available and it gets real bad after that in the trade market. Hell Betemit was a top option to trade for. Then there's no point in getting rid of Quentin. Ramirez is an over the hill veteran, having a good year, but is not the player Quentin is. These veterans past their prime are what put is into this state of just above mediocrity. Our defense would take a dive too.
  13. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 09:28 PM) Is it out of the realm of possibility that Quentin is traded, yet someone like, say, A-Ram is acquired? Let's hope not.
  14. I hope we get a bat out of this deal too
  15. Aramis Ramirez here would be more of the same that we've done for the last few years. Get a good veteran well past his prime. Pass
  16. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Jayson Stark is saying that the Phillies offered up Jared Cosart, Jonathan Singleton, and another mid tier pitching prospect for Hunter Pence. Quentin is cheaper and has been more productive this year than Pence, but is worse defensively, but I would think a similar package could be had for CQ. Giving the Sox a solid bat in the system to replace PK and a starter for 2013. Well, Pence has more value than Quentin. On the other hand, that package wasn't good enough to get Pence, so perhaps it is for Quentin.
  17. Williams has just spent the last 3 years dumping our young pitching. We certainly need an athletic outfielder who can hit. I see Ross Gload and Wilson Valdez are on the Philly roster...
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) Jason Frasor has been as good as Jesse Crain the last 3 years. Not even close, at least this season and last. Crain has had WHIPs of 1.176 and 1.015; Frasor's are 1.38 and 1.25. Yes, if you go back to 2009, Frasor's is better. But Frasor is 4 years older than Crain and, not surpisingly, has declined significantly. There better be a quality prospect attached, because trading a starter for a declining middle relieve isn't a serious effort in the least.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:34 PM) Nonsense. WTF does TORONTO want with Jackson? WTF do we want with Frasor? My goodness, Jackson (and his draft pick) for an aging middle reliever. The prospect better be elite.
  20. So we're going to send Jackson and Thornton and prospects for St Louis' prospect who didn't develop into what they thought they had?
  21. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 23, 2011 -> 06:33 PM) At this point, moving Quentin wouldn't be as much about who we get back, but more about getting Viciedo's major league career going. And not having to deal with Quentin in arbitration after this season. If they can get a couple low-level prospects with upside, I think that would be fair for Quentin. That the Sox may have someone waiting to take his position should not affect what we get for him. Quentin's value on the open market is what his value is to other teams. If that logic held, we should be able to get some really good players from other teams cheap, when they have prospects waiting behind them. But we never do. Heck, we should have gotten Thome for salary alone from Philly, because they had Ryan Howard ready to go. But we gave our best pitching prospect and our starting CF who went on to sign a massive contract on the open market (still a good trade, but we gave fair value).
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2011 -> 08:37 AM) It depends on what were looking for as a top prospect. You're not getting Bryce Harper, but you should be able to get guys with solid careers ahead of them. Yes we should. And if we can't don't trade. Jackson will net a supplemental (I think), another reason why he should yield something decent. And we have another year with Quentin if we don't trade him. I can't imagine that we'd be "desperate" about trading either.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 18, 2011 -> 09:31 PM) Steve Stone just said that the Pirates have a couple of scouts at the game tonight, that they are going to be buyers at the deadline, and that they are looking for a hitter. Let the speculation, begin! Yea - if you are looking for a hitter, the Sox roster is your place to shop!
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2011 -> 11:13 AM) An interesting thought... Carlos Marmol might be on the trading block, and the Sox have been shopping for a RH reliever quietly if you believe the rumors... Should Kenny call Hendry? No Bullpen is a strength of this team. Paying a high price for what would be the 3rd man with as many holes as this team has is silly.
  25. Michael Young plays terrible defense. If we're going to trade guys like Danks, you do it for next year. As it is, we're going to have a solid pitching staff next year, so we should still be competitive, especially in this division. Trade Danks or Quentin to get some outfield upgrades or a YOUNG third baseman (since we're so convinced Morel is useless).
