  1. Well, it's hard for me to discuss a statistical measure that I know nothing about; however, he's a 25 error per year guy; so if he saves 17 runs a year, which I assume is net, then he grosses a lot more. I find that hard to believe after watching him play. Why did Houston give this guy up for a guy they KNEW couldn't hit named Adam Everett (Everett couldn't hit a lick in the minors and can't in the majors either)? In 2002 he played only 88 games; because they were aware of his deficiencies
  2. The Astros replaced him with someone who can't hit at all: Adam Everett (Everett is a good fielder, but he also has a 315 career OBP). That should provide a clue. Anyway, the degree of his below-averageness is debatable, I doubt anyone could argue with a straight face that he's a good player; so why would we want him on this team?
  3. Yes he is; I saw him play for several years with the Astros - he's an awful shortstop. Lots of errors (seemingly in the late innings) and marginal range
  4. Lugo is a horrible baseball player - he can't catch. I get the Astro games down here, and he was just terrible with them - just terrible.
  5. Toby Hall can't hit a lick - no thanks. Huff, I like! Re the Pirates - those are 2 decent, not great, major leaguers; I wouldn't give up the farm for those 2
  6. Trouble is, that's what you'd get him for: once, or 1 year. This team isn't good enough to win a WS next year with Hudson, so trading Lee for Hudson doesn't excite me
  7. We have no one on this roster remotely close to a lead-off hitter; why Kenny Williams refuses to address that gaping 3-year deficiency on this club is beyond me; oh, I forgot, we HAD a lead-off hitter, and he gave him away to the As.
  8. Uh...That's a good deal?
  9. Only the sharp eye of Kenny Williams sees the true talent in Ben Davis. Considering the bag of balls Pitt got for Kendall, I doubt he tried too hard; either that or JR told him no increase in payroll. Mike Jackson (resign him for this occasion) and Schoenweiss would have come close to matching the package Oakland gave
  10. Why does everyone want these damn geezers on this team. We are already wasting $4 mill on Everett; I see strings for more alomar. My gawd We need a REAL lead off hitter in his prime or approaching that prime A stopgap is fine, if you're set at most positions We aren't set at 1/2 the positions, so we should not be looking for stopgaps
  11. That's not the worst of it- Kenny Williams has this 37 year older pencilled in to be our lead-off hitter - he kills 2 birds with one stone. Can't we use some creativity, get some younger ballplayers instead of the usual suspects like alomar, alomar, everett da da, da da?
  12. Speaking of saying names wrong, a sportscaster down here in New Orleans, just tonight, called them the Charlotte Hornets.
  13. He doesn't say much- that's why I like him; and he comments even less. Michaels and Patrick can't stop yakking. He's an old man now and his voice is shot, I will say.
  14. He's a declining player- an obvious stop-gap. Sandy Jr- okay, Sandy is a Jr, but you get the idea.
  15. Most annoying annnouncer? Al Michaels, bar none. He's an announcer, a color man, a sage a know it all; you must ask his permission to comment (until Madden came along, who has some credibility) Second to worst? Mike Patrick Pat Summerall was a breath of fresh air on ESPN SUnday night football
  16. Berkman also played college ball at Rice- he'll stay with the Astros.
  17. I think you need both. I will point out that the Astros, who MADE the playoffs, had far more devastating starting pitching injuries than either the cubs or Oakland- lost 2/4 top starters for most of the year, including the stretch. I will also point out that if Oakland's pen is anchored by Dotel, and if they actually had to trade for that piece of crap in midseason, it points out major pen problems.
  18. Teams need a good bench to win world series'---he's all we have worth a damn on it.
  19. Sometimes players actually take a few years to learn how to hit. Two third basemen, Ken Camminit and Phil Nevin come to mind.
  20. Just what we need; an over rated over-the-hill clubhouse cancer for 12 million. Well, the good news is that he's injured so much that he may not have much time to whine and complain.
  21. Just what we need- another player with a sub 320 career OBP. How about getting some good players onto the White Sox
  22. At this point, we have 3 power hitters for next year: Konerko, Lee and Frank. The problem with trading Konerko, is that it takes us down to two, which is marginal. Somebody has to drive runs in. Frank Cat's a good hitter: but Frank Cat has no power at all and RF is a power position (so is 3B and we have obvious offensive problems there as well). Further, he is the epitome of a "Beane school" hitter and Riccardi is from the Beane school, so I doubt he'd come cheap. Visquel is old (37) but would be nice for a year as he can get on base. A good SS (can he still field? don't know) would really help this team; let Willy and Uribe play 2nd and utility and if we have to keep Crede, so be it (at least he can catch and hit a few homers---offensive improvement sure would be nice though) I'd have to see the whole picture, but I think it will be hard to retool this team without scoring at least one big free agent bat. Because we have no depth and because the players who aren't producing offensively have no trade value, anything we give up creates a new hole.
  23. Yall who are clammoring for Soriano must be really bumming that Valentin won't be back next year. Makes sense to me to trade valuable pitching for a bad fielding, poor OBP infielder.
  24. Soriano can't field and he has no plate discipline. If that's an Ozzie player, we need a new manager. Oh, and he's also as expensive as Ray Durham, a far superior player who Williams couldn't wait to give away, is.
  25. Including top propects? I wouldn't do it. I don't care much about losing Rowand. Garland is 24 years old and a pretty good pitcher right now. JOhnson is 40 and getting him would financially preclude us from signing some hitters that we desparately need.
