I think there’s more than a decent chance that he buys in December. “Buy” meaning trading prospects for veterans. I could see him rushing up better pitching prospects into the pen. as he’s done many times before. He may scorch more earth than he did in 2016. He doesn’t learn from mistakes. He repeats them. but if it gets rid of him when his contract expires at the end of 24 then it’s worth it.

Man I hope that they pushed this guy out of the broom closet just to deliver the press conference so that they wouldn't have to explain why he is in the closet.

Giolito & Reynaldo to LAA. Update: Angels put on waivers

Failure to make big acquisitions isn't why this team stinks. -

Yep. He could have done it that way. But it's a lot more work than the approach he took. Also, harder to load up with GQ buddies. -

They had C filled; they just refused to accept it. Otherwise, they didn't use tools available. They ignored the Rule 5 draft most years; they sent relievers away in July for what were obviously AAAA players instead of "lottery tickets" in the low minors who had a chance to develop into something; they traded international money for more AAAA players. They barely made an effort to finish the rebuild. -

I certainly wouldn't trade Robert now. Teams are looking for 1-2 year players in July - that's the demand. Re Cease, if they intended to trade him, they have played this pretty well. The Giolito trade set the baseline expectation. -

Of premium talent. While trading for Yonder Alonzo... -

Maybe there's something to this. They developed Narvaez, who Tampa was struggling to develop. They made a major league catcher, of sorts,, out of Zavala. Collins didn't develop, but he had a swing-hitch. They got what was gettable out of Yermin. Now they have some talent to develop. -

Well Giolito is our highest value rental starter and Lopez our highest value rental reliver so the returns are going steeply downhill after this. But this seems like a reasonable deal. This FO done a lot worse for rents. Would be nice to get rid of Getz &Co and start afresh on the farm. -
GT 7/26: CUBS @ SOX, 7:10 pm CT, NBCSC

They could have held Toussaint until tomorrow and let him start; but nah. I guess they think they can move Clevinger off of one "Showcase" start, baggage and all. -
Too busy parsing over the Rule V eligibles of the Rays, Astros, Orioles, Diamondbacks and Dodgers to meet with the riffraff media.

Well on the bright side, perhaps this gives the Cubs enough hope to keep Stroman off of the SP market -
How do the Sox move forward now that tanking isn't an option?

That whole post was intended tongue-in-cheek. It's absurd to think that this team can contend in 2024. -

21 Well there you go. The obvious excuse for this season. Get Liam back and get suitable replacements for Gio, Lopez, Kelly and Grandal, and Sox will be cooking for 2024. -

GreenSox replied to baseball_gal_aly's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Well, the Sox have blown, what 10-12 Saves this season? That wouldn't have happened with Liam. Therefore, with Liam instead of a 41-60 record, the Sox would be 51-50. Plus our elite 3B will come back healthy and we should get a full healthy year out of Eloy. Trade for India solves 2B. No one's trading the Reds cost-controlled young pitching for India, so the Sox can accomplish this. Trade Giolito/Kelly/Lopez/Middleton TA for a major league ready starter and a near ready catching prospect. If you can't get the catcher in July, trade pitching prospects and perhaps others for one in December Can also dangle Burger and Sheets to accomplish this. Trade Lynn only for ML ready pitching. If unavailable, keep him. re-sign Elvis, with the intention to have Montgomery up in June. 2B solved, SP solved, C solved Bullpen: Liam, Graveman, Bummer, Keener, Crochet, Schultz (in July), Lambert, Banks, sign someone Done: 2024 contenders, Hahn-style. -
"If it ever got to the point where I felt that I wasn’t the right person in my role, I’d step aside.”

Regardless of when or if Giolito is traded, he shouldn't start again until after the deadline. The injury risk alone is enough reason. And while decisions likely won't be made based on the quality of his next start, a bad start will hurt his value more than a good start will help. And then he simply has more value to the acquirer by not starting, he can pitch as soon as he can join the new team; if he starts again for the Sox , they have to wait until next Thursday to pitch for his new team. Nothing at all to be gained by starting him.

Kenny, inarguably, did more. A lot more. But, he inherited a division winning team and a very good farm. The farm that Hahn inherited was terrible, and, of course, he's made it worse
-
Hahn learned the game from KW and a lot of Hahn's moves were similar to KW's. KW's many dumb moves weren't devastating and he made more nifty moves than Hahn. But Hahn also didn't have the farm that KW inherited (which KW helped build prior to becoming GM). And KW's last moves as GM to try to save the 2012 season were really bad. KW can handle July I guess, but he needs to go too.

Robert's had some key Ks lately.
-
And at their best, Kelly and esp. Lopez are better than Graveman anyway; Graveman can close adequately, but he's not the guy to bring in with runners already on base. Some team might get a steal with Lopez
-
Jesse's been pretty good this year. Sox will need him next season.

You have a 3-0 lead and you walk the first guy; wtf is that?
