  1. If you want to retool the minor league system, those trades are generally best done in July. Anderson's value should be higher with improved play, Giolito's value should be higher with a better season and the value of pitchers, esp. on short term deals, is higher in July. One caveat, however, that this is one lazy front office that has frequently napped during July. And even for the rebuild, they took only the sales of Sale, Eaton and Quintana seriously; the rest were lazy moves or giveaways for Rule 5 eligible players.
  2. Oh for the days of "premium talent", even if it turned into Yonder Alonso.
  3. I'll also point out that Zeby was pretty darn good last year; now it's no cinch that he repeats it it. He also takes his walks and his fangraphs defensive numbers were solid. He is an overlooked bright-spot in a dismal year.
  4. Boy did that inflated WAR pay off. Sale was so good (production + contract) that it was almost impossible to get full value for him. Cease, who may be the most valuable pitcher in baseball as a trade commodity, is almost in the same place, but he doesn't have those 3 years locked-in at a fixed cost.
  5. Murphy is why I'm good with the D-only catcher approach. The premium that you have to pay for offense that, on it's own (not relative to position) isn't particularly good, is immense. And I know that he's a great defensive catcher - but the price is inflated because of the O. C is the place for a hole on offense; And RF, a position where hitters with Murphy's numbers abound (with one notable exception), isn't the place.
  6. Oh I know he's just guessing like the rest of them. Seems like a reasonable guess. I'd never seen the page until the Senga post above. Yes Frazier is someone we could use as a Leury upgrade
  7. While the Sox couldn't "afford" Senga's interpreter, this one is believable.
  8. Without question, Gallo was better with the Dodgers. His batting average improved from .159 to .160 for the season, thanks to his .162 average with the Dodgers. He was also a much around hitter with the Dodgers, once he was able to escape the pressure of playing in New York. His OPS improved from .621 to .638, thanks to raking at a brisk .671 in the City of Angels. There is a concern that he could be just a south-western guy, raking in humid Texas and sunny LA, while struggling in New York.
  9. Also something Gallo did not do last year. He may walk a lot, but his OBP is not good. Signing Gallo is rabbit's foot stuff.
  10. He's been terrible for the last season and a half. There are low batting averages and low OBP and then there is .162 and .277.
  11. I believe that's how we got Narvaez and Yermin. Sort of surprised we didn't do more, considering that we actually had some success there.
  12. Phillies selected 7 in the minor league phase; I think the Astros picked 5.
  13. Did they use Rule 5 even once during the rebuild? Never mind, Covey. But just once.
  14. Hope you're right, because if so, we'd be trading him at near peak performance value so we should get a full return.
  15. Last year, the clowns on twitter said that teams were putting together offers for Kimbrel. While these guys (Hendriks at least) are better than Kimbrel, I just don't see teams giving up much for the Sox relievers. They aren't financial bargains and teams can fix their bullpen in July.
  16. I'm sure the FO is working tirelessly scanning the rosters of the Cubs, Twins, Royals, As and Tigers. Time is getting short; time for some desperation trades!
  17. That's fine, if for a good player; not for a pile of utility infielders and other junk.
  18. The odds are probably on his side. This winter meetings has the makings of a Hahn special: trade 4 of your best 6 prospects for a good, not great, player. Some will like it; some won't.
  19. Narvaez was our 2nd to best hitter his last season here. Sox grabbed him off the scrap heap and developed him.
  20. I'm sure he's close to a lot of Royals. Sox signed a Royals coach or 2. That's it. Not their players. As for Eflin, the only knock I see is that he doesn't get enough innings in. He would have been a good add for the rotation, even if they want a higher-end guy next year. Price was reasonable and he's only 28.
  21. Yes, the injuries and declines in production aren't his fault per se. But perhaps had he done things differently, we could have overcome that. Picking up Kimbel's and not Rodon's option is inexplicable. No one thought that was a good idea. Using so many resources on the bullpen was unwise. Had he redeployed those resources, we might have been able to overcome the things that did not go well and were not "his fault." I
  22. Were this a one year blip, an anomaly, amidst great success, then I could go with that. The problem is that it's the successes, not the failures, that have been the anomaly, under Hahn. And by that logic, if Vegas has us pegged at, say 82 wins, and the team wins 76, it will also not be his fault. Regardless, there's nothing stopping him from improving this team for next season. Let's see him do it.
  23. Their history says that they don't have a clue whether he is or isn't. But because has no external affirmation (prospect ranking), they don't want to take the chance that he isn't, and would prefer some decliner that they can wishcast will rebound.
