One thing they need to do to make it a little easier is to trade Abreu. Yea, let him know ahead of time, but move him. I don't give a rip about his "leadership" - not sure how great it's been anyway, and the young players may breath easier with papa gone. Call the Brewers, Rays, etc. A week ago, it could also have been the top 3 relievers, but they have turned to dust all of a sudden.

I guess we can wait for new front office to fire Haber, Getz, Hostetler and Shirley (nothing against Shirley, but he'll be a casualty).

All trade inquiries should be halted. It's all lipstick on an old sow. Tonight was a disgrace. The worst thing they could do is trade for a 2-year player that will cost real prospects. The next worse thing is to waste 2nd tier prospects to rent more old guys.

Very difficult in July with the premium prices, yes. But, as I've posted before, we sold 2 late-inning relievers for 1 Rule 5 guy each, so perhaps that's a possibility. This is kind of a circular point, but if the front office actually knew which prospects had ceiling and which didn't, that would help. But it's hard to have confidence that they do - if they were that good with prospects, the farm probably wouldn't be at a deficit. But they seem to be getting better. To that end, while trading for Kimbrel was dumb (we didn't need him) trading Madrigal, a known quantity with limited ceiling, was smart. Should have saved Madrigal for a good player that we really needed.

Yes, as are 90% of them. That's the nut of it. For us to give equivalent talent (or more, as some suggest is necessary), would severely hurt the farm. We'd likely have to give top 10s. But I look at opportunity cost when evaluating these trades. And to give top 10s is just way too high from the Sox perspective, considering the wins added (a couple).

Yankees gave their 18th, 24th and non top-40 prospects for Benintendi (fangraphs, 1/22). None top 20 per Law. If the Sox, can give the 18th, 24th and an unrated prospect for Happ, that would be fine.

Kelly was a "buy high" off of a career year in the first place. He's been a very average pitcher, at best, during his career.

Cleveland has been about the best there is at snaring prospects. Tampa has traded a lot of good ones away. The thing to avoid with Tampa is their veterans; Cleveland too.

Pollock has a 134 against lefties, which is higher than most in this group against righties. Someone just to platoon with him would help.

Well the Astros didn't make it in their year 2 of their now 8 year window. Need a deft touch; not this all or nothing stuff. And the Sox have the budget to stay good (if they would stop using significant bucks on utility infielders et al)
