Mets could shop McNeil, Sox could have interest
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
A 30 year old late bloomer whose last 2 seasons were 1.5 and .5 WAR. Yea, but let's send Crochet, one of our best young pitchers, as a starter package. That's the way the way winning organizations do it. Peddle for Peddle. Kimbrel at most, and I wouldn't even do that. -

Not paying the correct price = trading away Bassit, Semien et al for 1 year of Jeff Samardzija. Just had to get this tor starter, price be damned. There is no way this FO went into this off-season saying "Jeff McNeil and his .679 OPS is our guy" unless it was the idea that they could get him cheap and use resources elsewhere. There may be a lot of unused $ in JR's checkbook, but Rick Hahn's supply prospects/young players is limited. -

McNeil for Vaughn? Good lord. -

That's the logic that created the need to rebuild. Paying the correct price matters a lot. -

Mets are trying to dump him; terrible season last year; attitude. Should be an extreme buy-low. -
Where could Kimbrel be traded, and for what?
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The opposite is closer to the truth. But really I think a lot of fans lack patience for young players if they are in a Sox uniform. Vaughn is the same player that he was when he was drafted. If he's that limited, the Sox never should have drafted him in that position. Trading him now would be "selling low" anyway. -
This is probably the wrong thread, but here's an analysis of Hawk's term as GM. Not that bad. And it included Ivan Calderon, an important transitional player for the 90s teams. http://blackbetsy.blogspot.com/2004_12_01_archive.html

Hawk drafted Bonilla in Rule 5 after the 1985 season. Hawk giveth and Hawk sendeth away.

He was a miracle worker after the 1970 season. May he rest in peace.

White Sox sign Brandon Finnegan to a Minor League Deal

His stats do look like the lefty version of Fulmer - I wonder if he spins it like Fulmer. Just cut the walks by 2/3 and we have a major league pitcher! Worth a shot. -
5 year anniversary of the start of the rebuild
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That's due to Sale and the 2 Eaton trades (credit to Hahn on those 2) and Williams' evaluation of Cuban players. That is why I have no interest in this "3 year window' stuff and what gives me hope that the Sox can keep this going: We would have been good for 5-10 years and counting, but for some stupid trades, none of which had much upside at all. And we're certainly not dependent on top 10 draft picks (we blew most of those and we still rebuilt fine). The only way this ceases anytime soon is if the Sox make more bad trades (or severe overpayments) for veterans. -
Use him in a trade then; we got players like him for relievers and as the additional player in bigger trades.
-
But why does he have to clear waivers if he doesn't make the 26? He can't just sit on the 40 man?
-
What makes Micker eligible for that? Sox pulled Yermin and a starting catcher out of this so I'm interested in seeing what happens.

The Sale trade is still pending Kopech - if he's not a #2, then the Sox really got the short end of this one. Sale was an elite pitcher on a muti-year contract with favorable terms. It would have been nice for Hahn to have found his direction prior to selling away Tatis, Semien, and 40% of the As rotation for pennies on the dollar and also squandering the #26 pick in the draft. -

That's a pretty safe bet. -

I would think that Rick Hahn thinks he's worth substantially greater than $16 million in the market. That would explain picking up the option for the purpose of trading him. -
The trade was well-intended: 2b was a need and he was playing well and the price wasn't exorbitant. Kimbrel trade was much worse.
-
That's certainly true in general. Most of the trades and many signings prove that. But Leury can play SS and CF (and 2b, 3b, LF and RF). Shouldn't need any other utility players on this roster.

This is hardly the first time for this FO giving away young players for dimes on the dollar. And never for a compelling reason or high upside. -
List of teams that have the #30 farm system......

Kimbrel for Zach Eflin. Kimbrel for Segura would be a lazy move and a major fail. If they trade Vaughn (or Crochet or Sheets) they better get a young player; these self-serving trades take their toll. -
Robbie Ray to the Mariners, 5 years $115 million
GreenSox replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There's no guarantee to anything. Heck winning the division is no cinch. You certainly can't count on the rest of the division playing .500 or less next season. Having a fresh staff probably gives you the best chance. But the Sox need a couple of pitchers to get to that.. And there were some reasonably priced guys out there, and apparently they weren't interested. We hear trades - well this ace FO has the #30 Farm, so the marginal cost of trades is sky high. -
No interest in Cobb? Seems about what the Sox need. Of course it takes more work to deal with agents than for the FO with the #30 farm to make a trade.
