  1. The goal of Top 100s, not to mention top 5 picks, is much higher than Eckstein. Eckstein level would be a big disappointment.
  2. Leury's value is as a utility player for defense. With him, you only need 1 on the roster, not 2. He's still making less than they gave Jay last season......
  3. They didn't want to chance Puig's dog and pony show in the clubhouse. And this org. is clubhouse-sensitive.
  4. It stopped because they filled their holes and there is no one left (who would be a serious upgrade) to fill whatever still may be unfilled. Spending money on these older utility/platoon players/marginal upgrades is just silly.
  5. That would be veteran for the sake of veteran; the kind of stuff we did in Ozzie's latter years.
  6. Not bringing him up last year was curious. He can hit -but also he's an OBP guy and the Sox have never valued that. But if they want Collins to develop the defensive skills, he's better off in AAA. They'll never get a thing for Mercedes in trade...a Rule 5 guy at best, but probably an org. guy. Yes, I hope he makes the 26...simply hope.
  7. Fair enough. Bad form by me. Apologies. Pitching will make or break this rebuild.
  8. The Sox aren't getting any of these guys without tapping deep into young pitching. Doing that would be a good way to ensure that the Sox don't win a thing. The marginal utility from quality pitching at this point in the cycle > than marginal utility from another hitter, especially another 3B.
  9. It's just like 5 years ago with all of the "trade all the prospects for Cargo" nonsense and in the aftermath of the clownish Frazier trade. Some are far more interested in "stars" than in the Sox actually contending consistently. This would be a disaster.
  10. 83 wins looks about right. I'd feel better if they had 1 real stopper in the bullpen. We'll need Rodon; I figure Gio to flame out in July.
  11. As I see it, the need is for a)2B and b)someone who can hit lefties to play RF who is an upgrade from L Garcia. Holt and Brad Miller can play IF and OF, but can't hit lefties so they are out. Flores, Gennett and Dozier don't play OF, so they are out. Flores would be interesting if he played OF. Kipnis hasn't hit in years, and Zobrist looks like he's done. You're left with L Garcia in RF against lefties, who is better against lefties than Holt or Miller. And then Mendick. Yea, they could sign someone to play 2B, but they all need to be platooned. They can live with Mendick for a few months.
  12. We have a utility infielder - Leury. Don't need 2 of them.
  13. The Rays have 2 of the top 5; they would have 3 of the top 5, but generously sent Solak to the Rangers for a hard-throwing relief pitching prospect. Heck, we have a bunch of those guys.
  14. The Sox are going to beat the Twins with pitching; it may not be this year, but it should be soon enough.
  15. The Sox were certainly very generous to Covey with playing time that his performance didn't warrant. But he never developed, so I can see him wanting to leave and try some different instruction/coaching.
  16. I can see national media speculating that way; Vaughn or Madrigal would be very appealing to Colorado and they look at Vaughn blocked by Abreu and Madrigal blocked by Moncada. And then add Kopech. Of course, trading one of those guys (or any good pitching) for a 2 year player would be insane.
  17. There have been a few - in the cherished up the middle positions. But, the front office just didn't know what they had. Honestly, were this not a post Tatis giveaway-world (and post Semien/Escobar), the Sox might have been more active on the trading front...they do need to cull some prospects if not now, very soon. But they've, understandably, turned very conservative re trading prospects, to my great relief as a fan. Re pitching, I only look at stats and do some basic reading - but Stiever appears to be the best they've drafted and developed in a long time.
  18. Theoretically, yes, But despite some cw, the Sox haven't been particularly adept at developing starting pitching. Who is the last starting pitcher to come through the system, pillar to post?
