7/22 Sox @ Rangers - already started
GreenSox replied to DoUEvenShift's topic in 2024 Season in Review
WTF is he walking everybody for anyway? it gives a pitcher no room to maneuver. He’s gotta throw it over the plate. You could probably put 2/3 of these blown saves square on the back of the Dugout Dunce. -

They have some more pitching in the minors. But these guys position here on the major league team: They’ve all got to go. -
Moncada and Clevinger "returned from rehab assignments"

What does "been returned from" mean? When I read that i thought well they returned, so they're back and ready to go. -
Dodgers interested in Robert, Crochet, Pham

I think that the buyers are waiting for the supply to increase. The sellers are waiting for the offers to improve. -
i thought I read it in one of FS articles. (maybe it wasn't you). Maybe I misread it. Maybe I can find it. My surmise also is that Smith was a late audible called from on high.

Heck, they have better than an outside shot to compete this year. They’re 6 back. I’d take them going forward (after this season) over the Royals.

Not defensively. But he does swing at everything. -
Are college baseball players really getting 6 figure money? it's just not that lucrative of a sport. Even the football numbers have been exaggerated, although there's never been any affirmative proof of those either. Regardless, any premium in high school players will likely evaporate. Shirley said in his interview that they didn't really know how to evaluate college hitters: he better learn quickly.

At least one of them needs to go. Benintendi would be first choice. They can’t lay it all on Eloy, Moncada, and Anderson. Shake things up. Don’t general manage like Pedro manages. As for Robert, again, the Mariners lead the league in strikeouts. On the front office show on the radio yesterday, their general manager said their biggest problem was too many strikeouts. Robert doesn’t help them there. getting a player who can immediately play back in a trade is probably a good idea for an extra piece. But not a player on a short term contract. Outman from the Dodgers would be fine. If you make a trade with the Phillies, taking back, their centerfielder would be fine. -

He's got the same 2 year timeline as players we're dumping. I'm starting to talk myself onto Outman (as a piece; not the key piece); he has always hit, until this year. Maybe he's washed; but maybe it's a buy low. Either way, he does play a good CF, and I'm of the mind that in this era of everyone trying to hit fly balls, that OF defense is absolutely critical. -
Crochet Trade Updates (Nightengale)
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Trade Winds 2024
Wilbur Wood might have made the Hall of Fame had that line drive not busted his knee; and he definitely would have made it had he not spent the first 1/2 of his career in the pen. Big assist to Ed Herrmann. Thanks for the Hemond recap, Lip. They don't make trades like that much anymore. But we could do for another Santiago-Eaton trade. -
Crochet wants an extension to pitch in the playoffs
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Trade Winds 2024
Maybe some fairly close teams with lots of prospects like the Cubs or Nats might be interested in the offseason. But kicking the can down the road carries its own risks. And the players are depreciating assets. With Crochet, you lose 1/3 of the post seasons, which is where is highest value lies. -

Trouble is that Robert is a K machine these days, which is exactly what they don't need. The other curious thing about the Mariners is that their top 10 prospects are all position players. Their Major League team can't hit a lick. Yet they haven't called up a single prospect. Even if it would be "rushing" someone, you'd think that they'd still try it with a player or 2. -
Crochet Trade Updates (Nightengale)
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Trade Winds 2024
Yea and he brought in Jay Johnstone, dispatching the hapless Syd O'Brien as part of that trade. I don't know what the Angels were thinking. Berry was an excellent defender, but he couldn't hit a lick. But the 1970 Sox also had a few good young players who were blossoming: Melton, Carlos May and Ed Herrmann. They also had a reliever Wilbur Wood who they turned into a dominant starter. Anyway Chris, I guess you got your Wilbur Wood moment. Now you need to make 3 Ken Berry trades. -
I was thinking MLB record. Anyway, Grifol manages as if he has a championship plug-and-play team. Best hitter hits 3rd; fast on base guy leads off. If have a couple of 7th inning guys and 8th inning guys and they get their inning each. Don't use closer until the 9th. Other than starting pitching, this is a ragtag bunch of misfits. you have to get dirty;; shake things up. Make changes. Do something. There is no "Book" for this wreckage of a roster.

Crochet Trade Updates (Nightengale)
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Trade Winds 2024
Hemond traded his veterans (late 20s; 30s) for younger veterans (mid 20s). The Ken Berry trade was something to behold. He also brought in a great manager and pitching coach. -
It's hard to see another win on this schedule until we get the Angels in mid September; maybe the Giants - we usually play well in San Fran. Could break the record for longest losing streak. 7 and counting....

It would have been interesting to see what Witt could do with Peralta's 89MPH heater; he may have just stook there in shock.

Cardinals Have Strong Interest in Fedde
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Trade Winds 2024
What I really mean is that we have to find the prospects where the consensus is wrong (and also avoid the phony top prospects). I don't know if the Sox have the scouting chops to do that. But I just look at the Dodgers and last year their #1 was Cartaya: he's now #7. Last year their #12 was DePaula. He's now #2. Find the DePaulas and avoid the Cartayas. The Rays got their #4 for the rent of Glasnow; how hum, except that Pepiot has pitched like an ace. All easier said than done. But the Sox have to be smarter than the lists. -
Same basic lineup again Sheets in for Benitendi in the 2 hole, but it's Pham at leadoff then Robert at 3 then Vaughn then Eloy. It's worked to well in this 6 game losing streak, so why shake it up Pedro? Stick to the gameplan.

Cardinals Have Strong Interest in Fedde
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Trade Winds 2024
It's just my opinion, but I don't think teams will give up a blue-chip prospect for Fedde. It's just my feeling based on what I've seen: we can start with we didn't get one for Cease (despite media reports that we were getting this massive offers). I think we'll get one, but it will be like pulling teeth, for Crochet or Robert. Which is why I think the Sox need to scout the living heck out of the 2nd and 3rd tier prospects for both talent and "makeup." (the latter of which the Sox have ignored at times to their detriment). -
Over slot for a 4 year college reliever who had no leverage. Weak draft and kind of a transition year due to NIL, but it looks like the draft team was just flummoxed.

Walker’s defense is a plague. It’s hard to understand how someone who plays defense that poorly could ever be an elite MLB prospect, which he was at one time. The fans act like he’s still an untouchable. The Cardinals system doesn’t look particularly interesting. Still I think pretty much any team could put together a good package, since his trade won’t involve top-tier prospects. -
We’ll see. But it still strikes me that last year they punted only one round and still drafted a second round talent in the 7th round. This year they punt 5, arguably 6, rounds, despite the added flexibility from a larger bonus, pool and extra draft pick. If NIL going to send more highschoolers to college, and presumably keep college players in college longer, they better learn how to evaluate college hitters…. And take those senior signings more seriously.

Yeah, if he’s striking out two or three times a game, he should be sent back down. But Ramos was striking out less than 20% of the time; he just needed to work on pitch recognition. Sosa’s OPS in July was over .700, and they sent him down. Contenders have starters hitting worse than that. He rakes AAA; is he really got my to learn anything more there? Now neither can play shortstop, which takes away some of the flexibility and is why I assume Nicky Lopez hasn’t been released. I’m just not sure what the overriding philosophy is.
