Well if renting a player off of 73 wins was debacle and massive failure in 2014, it takes a special baseball mind like that of Rick Hahn to repeat the failed practice in 2019 coming off of 72 wins. Pass big time on 1 year rents.

Sox made the right moves today. Brewers are just clearing out the bottom part of their roster. Some just too expensive. Like Yolmer- some team will sign him for less than the Sox would have had to tender him. Shaw was unplayable last season - dropped .300 OPS points. Hard to see how that could happen in one season. Some names of the non-tendered could help the Sox. There's a pitcher on the list that some wanted to trade for. No need now - the world is our oyster.

Of that group, there are 2 for sure pitchers. 3 are coming off of injury and only 1 of those has any substantial ML experience (one has none at all). Then there is Cease who looked good in a short stint, but is no cinch; and inconsistent Lopez. And then zero in the minors behind them (except for a couple in the low minors). Regardless, if they can't sign Machado when there was no upper market competition, Betts is not realistic. On a side note, I'd like to see them trade some of the Sheets' for some similarly situated pitching (or middle infield where, as usual, they have nothing in the minors aside from Madrigal who will be needed this year).

They need to do better than Treinan unless it's just a flier or unless they can identify a specific reason along with solution, for his loss of control last year. The next good trade the Sox make with Oakland will be the first...since Chet Lemon anyway.

RF is the final piece. However, the Sox are nowhere near the final piece. Add 2 starters, 2 relievers, and then they'll be close to the final piece.

Avi - he hits about the same as Villar. Now I'm not particularly interested in signing him, but he can hit as well as Villar. Puig too.

Still too much, they need someone who can actually play RF, and they just don't need to do all of these load up the prospects in trades stuff. Make a trade like the Brewers/Padres made to move prospects/young players around.

All of that for 2 years of an average pitcher named Dylan Bundy? Good lord. They could have just signed Kyle Gibson and gotten an equivalent, if not better, pitcher.

I hope the Sox move on from Yolmer. Can't afford more than 1 or 2 no-hit types if they really think they can contend.

It's a little surprising - not because his play has been remarkable in any way, but that the Sox seemed to have changed their minds on him.

They can get a better RF cheaper than 10Mill per annum. He's had his moments in the IF, but not consistently.

There are numerous 4th/5th starters that they could sign before having to trade for Jeff Samardzija. Sox have a SS; why in the world trade for 2 year Seager and use their only 2B prospect to do so. Trading for short term veterans put the Sox in this mess to begin with. Please don't repeat the failed practices.

This one's hard to understand beyond the "Friends and family first" aspect. The contract is well above market, he's not betting better, marginal in the field and we have DH types who should be near ready plus a top prospect 1B. I certainly hope this doesn't mean that Hahn start will start trading off his prospects again. That always = disaster.

Love the signing; the can certainly keep McCann, but he also gives them a good piece to for a trade for a RF or a #4 starter. Astros could use a catcher. Unfortunately, they don't have a RF that would fit. I wonder if they could trade him for someone like Peacock?

Collins as a trade piece is selling low. He should be able to hit pretty well. Maybe learn 1B

Why wouldn't someone take Mercedes and see if he can hit? He hit everywhere in the minors. Nothing to lose. The Sox took a catcher with far weaker credentials than him a couple of years ago. For that matter, why haven't the Sox? Guys like Rutherford are also stashable - now he'd be a pure stash and no-play, but a reasonable move for someone like Detroit. Madeiros is the one that has no chance of anyone taking him. He has a low ceiling and he's pitched poorly. Less than 24 hours left. I guess they can always dump players after Wednesday - just not add. I still love my fringe prospects....just not the ones they seem intent on protecting.

Right now, Fulmer is a much better pitcher than Brinson is a hitter. Brinson's problem is nothing that a change of scenery (which he has already had) will fix. Sox had a lot of players who hit like Brinson and they just went through multi-year grind with Leury and Engel to get them up to acceptable (barely) offensive standards. Don't need another one. Fulmer, on the other hand, has a discernible kernel of talent with his spin rate.

Well, they shouldn't. Okay, maybe a team that already is a legit contender and has a deep farm would think about it. And Boston's not going to trade him unless they have at least one top prospect coming back. For the Sox, all it would accomplish is give Hahn another 5 years of excuses and increase the chance of contending for one year; and those chances still won't be great.

I would say that pretty much everyone on is "Risk of getting claimed" list deserves to be protected over: Madeiros - why in the world would they protect him? Frare Palka Ruiz Vieira I'm sure there are more. Not protecting Mercedes would just be mind boggling, especially when this team needs a hitter. Of course not calling him up in September was hard to understand as well.

Sure, why not? They need pitching and he was pretty sensational with the Brewers. And he's not as old as I thought he was.
