Along with those that believe that Betts will re-up with the White Sox. Still, I would pursue Rendon. There is a chance that the big boy in that chase is Texas and that the Dodgers, Yankees, et al don't pursue.

Sox in on Marcell Ozuna? I mean, maybe. Or not.
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It doesn't matter if these 1 year rents are "fair trades." They will not lead to building a winner. You need to make "Fair trades" that help you win. "Fair trades" can harm you when you trade needed parts for unneeded parts or for those quickly consumed (like 1 year rents). And to trade pitching when this org. is way short on pitching (healthy or otherwise)? -
Can't fault Preller for this. Preller's under an unrealistic "win now" order after only 5+ years on the job.

72 win team contemplating 1 year rentals. My god. -
The perennially overrated Archer and his 2019 5+ ERA sounds about right.

Hopefully the White Sox (the Mets would say no to). No interest in trading away starting pitching on this team that is devoid of starting pitching. Sox can live with a weak hitting RF. They can't live with this pitching staff (unless each of Kopech, Dunning and Rodon produce immediately off of injury and some AAAA guys find new life in the pen). -
Rays know what they're doing on these trades; terrific pro scouting. And they got Pham in the first place for not a whole lot.

Aren't the Sox more likely to be ready in 2021 than 2020?
GreenSox replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
yes they are more likely to win in 21 than 20; and 22 than 21. But they need to get the show on the road. No interest in any Hahn trades for veterans (c. 5% success rate), but it's time to amass some free agent pitching. -
Last year, it was the Padres; this year the Phillies. Next year it will be the Rangers or Giants. It's not happening with this outfit until they show tangible results.

He's the guy I absolutely don't want to sell. He's got "top 100" written all over him soon. Yes you're right teams want pitching back and the Sox 2nd tier hitting prospects had poor years overall. That leaves 3 veterans to trade: McCann Colome Bummer And then they'll need a completely new pen.

What would they have to give up to get someone like Musgrove from the Pirates? Something that doesn't involve young pitching.

Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

When will they start doing that? -

There's always a reason; always an excuse. At some point you have to deliver.....unless you are Rick Hahn, in which case just being Rick Hahn is delivery enough. Rick Hahn doing trades for veterans....can't wait. -

GreenSox replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
We don't know what the Sox offered, so we don't know if they overeplayed their hand. But last year they low-balled; hopefully they didn't this year. And no, he isn't worth twice what other guys are worth; but they don't need those other guys - they need a TOR guy. The Nats overpaid for Corbin and won a title. And since the Sox don't adhere to many of the practices of winning organizations, it's okay with me if they don't adhere to the "not-overpaying" practice as well. -

Wheeler is a solid 2. That's what the Sox need. There really is no fall-back option. -

Well he had an excellent year and they won a ring; they had the front line pitching to match the Astros. As for Puig, not a big fan either, but I haven't seen any solid choices. Can't the Sox develop an outfielder for goodness sakes...whose the last one developed from draft to an above average starter? Rowand? -

I hope you're right. But Sox have a lot to fix themselves. They really could use a real 8th inning flamethrower, e.g. And a RF (although I'd be satisfied with a Puig type). If the Sox like Wheeler, they need to overpay for him. That's how the Nats got Corbin; they really liked him (and they were correct in that assessment) and they paid a premium price. And were rewarded. -

I was thinking 4/$85. But he's worth 5/$110; it may be above market, but he's worth it. -
False choice; 1 year rents are not the only trading option...unless you are reactive instead of proactive; play on the other team's terms and lack creativity. Plus, what Sox prospects have real trade value, but whom the Sox have no real need as they are surplus?
-
Well if renting a player off of 73 wins was debacle and massive failure in 2014, it takes a special baseball mind like that of Rick Hahn to repeat the failed practice in 2019 coming off of 72 wins. Pass big time on 1 year rents.

Sox Non-Tender Yolmer, Frare, Burr, Release Veiera
GreenSox replied to hogan873's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sox made the right moves today. Brewers are just clearing out the bottom part of their roster. Some just too expensive. Like Yolmer- some team will sign him for less than the Sox would have had to tender him. Shaw was unplayable last season - dropped .300 OPS points. Hard to see how that could happen in one season. Some names of the non-tendered could help the Sox. There's a pitcher on the list that some wanted to trade for. No need now - the world is our oyster. -
Of that group, there are 2 for sure pitchers. 3 are coming off of injury and only 1 of those has any substantial ML experience (one has none at all). Then there is Cease who looked good in a short stint, but is no cinch; and inconsistent Lopez. And then zero in the minors behind them (except for a couple in the low minors). Regardless, if they can't sign Machado when there was no upper market competition, Betts is not realistic. On a side note, I'd like to see them trade some of the Sheets' for some similarly situated pitching (or middle infield where, as usual, they have nothing in the minors aside from Madrigal who will be needed this year).
-
Some pitching.
-
They need to do better than Treinan unless it's just a flier or unless they can identify a specific reason along with solution, for his loss of control last year. The next good trade the Sox make with Oakland will be the first...since Chet Lemon anyway.

RF is the final piece. However, the Sox are nowhere near the final piece. Add 2 starters, 2 relievers, and then they'll be close to the final piece.
