Mazara's played in the league for 4 years full-time and he's been remarkably consistent. 20 homers each of his first 3; on pace for that this season. His OPS has ranged from .729-.753. He may have tools, but in 3.5 seasons they haven't shown up. And there's certainly no reason to believe that this org. is the one to bring them out. Trading for any 2 year player is inane anyway at this point in the build. It's a sideshow that can only hurt long-term. Sign him as a FA in 2 years if we like him.

Mazara's a pretty consistent .745 OPS guy. That's not particularly good. Kemp is .725, a little less than not particularly good, but he plays more positions and has more control ( all of which makes him more interesting to me).

Colome remains with White Sox, who always had ample interest in him

I wouldn't trade him. I think they get better value waiting. It's worth the risk. -
Par usual. What Rule 5 guys do they have for us this year?

A fair and balanced soliloquy about Jose Abreu, by ron
GreenSox replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't think he will be. I don't think he's been in their long term plans. I wish they'd trade him, but I think they are kind of "afraid" to. -
He's as interesting as Mazarra, whom people want to trade real prospects for.

Sox are in no position to be trading top prospects for 2 year players. They aren't in a position to win next year. That is simply not a serious effort. Unless one enjoyed 2014-16, then by all means, hit it.

Sox will trade Jon Jay for a rule 5 guy.

Low OBP, LOw OPS, 2 year left.... another clownshow, not serious org. building.
-
yea that would do it. Now add 5 starters, 3 relievers, a 2B and the Sox might win 84 games.

You know it. This would just another stupid contrivance like the Shark trade that had nothing to do with the serious business of building a baseball operation, but which seriously depleted assets.

My opinion: Sox need to make another megadeal
GreenSox replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Sox aren't going to trade any of those guys. And they shouldn't. They should maximize what they can get for Colome, Abreu, Leury and maybe McCann. The one player who could bring a blockbuster, and it needs some simmering, is Bummer. Repeat this year with more strikeouts and we have ourselves a Brad Hand, who brought a top 20 prospect (or was it top 10?). Yes they could trade him now and get a meh prospect. Yes they could sit and get nothing. But if he repeats the WHIP and ups the Ks, and the Sox have something. Brad hand had zero prospect pedigree. He was cut by the Marlins and after a season and a half with San Diego, he was the next greatest thing. -
That would be insane. Just ridiculous- the kind of clowning that put the Sox exactly in this position.

No. Concentrate on pitching. Okay if they'll take Colome and Abreu, but otherwise, don't move young pitching for him. Benintendi is a very good (never great) player having a down year. Sox got good fortune when Boston wouldn't include him and made Moncada available instead.

They Sox don't need to trade prospects for veteran pitchers....that's what they did from 2014-16, and sporadically from 2001-2012 and it has a 100% failure rate. 100%. The only time it arguably worked was the rent of Garcia for 1 year; but the rent wasn't the win..... signing him as a FA was the win. That's what the Sox need to do. And if you are going to do it, you certainly don't do it in July. Or trade prospects for pitching prospects (perhaps closer to the majors prospects). I'm not convinced trading guys like Bummer or Fry is really in order. Yes relievers are volatile, but that's mostly true with the older guys. These guys, esp Bummer, haven't reached their peak and we don't know what they have. Based on prior returns, it's not really worth it.

Tilson had an OPS under .600 and doesn't play compelling D. That's not close to 25 worthy on a bad team. If Engel could get his OPS to .700, that's a real win and makes him a 4th OF. If he can exceed .760, which would be a miracle (but he does have skills), that makes him a legit player.
-
I think it will be trade or nothing and probably nothing. I don't think that they've ever planned on re-signing him and nothing I've seen from Abreu this season would warrant reconsideration of that. He hasn't hit much since the break. Is there some legit Boston rumor?

Better hitter, better defender, more talent.
