  1. After reading the article in the Trib, my first reaction was: "this is way too good to be true." I cannot fathom the Sox being able to obtain Colon for, essentially, Liefer and either Osuna, Glover, Marte or Wunsch. Why would the Yankees want to deal El Duque (and still pay his salary, according to the article) just for one of our middle relievers? Wouldn't El Duque make a pretty good middle reliever and give them more flexibility should one of their ancient starters break down? And finally, and most importantly, why in God's name would the Expos take so little for Colon? They traded some seriously good prospects for him. I think they'd want El Duque, Liefer, and another good prospect or two (e.g., Malone, Munoz, Webster, Honel, or someone like that). I'm confident that the Sox are major players in the Colon trade talks. I just don't believe they'll be able to get him so cheaply.
  2. Techincally they don't agree on anything there - the arbitrator must choose either the $ figure suggested by the team, or the $ figure suggested by the player.
  3. He's just not any damn good. He doesn't walk much, and his swing is an upper cut, where he tries to lift everything. Which leads to a lot of strike outs. I'm not a huge Liefer fan, but he was a real good hitter in the minors, and when he got some extended playing time in '01 he did some good things. I think he could productive player as a platoon outfielder, playing only against right handed pitching. He still would strike out a lot, but if he got 300 ABs in such a position, he'd hit .250/18/50 I'd guess. But he doesn't fit on the Sox and he's no good as a pinch hitter. I would think he would have some value to someone out there (maybe the Expos who are, as I understand it, in need of a little pop in the OF), though he wouldn't command much on his own (i.e., without being part of a package deal).
  4. Plus there's some more crap form the people over at CBS.Sportsline I'm excited about Jimenez's performance. It is critical for the Sox that he succeed in the lead-off spot. We really have no other options (and please don't say Harris; that guy is not even close to being a productive major league hitter).
  5. I don't think they have to trade both of them; I thought if Minaya unloaded Colon he would either be at his budget, or just a little above (which he could then meet by dealing Barret, or whatever their catcher's name is or someone else in the $2 million/year range).
  6. this is larry beinfest GM of the marlins. the article can be found here Thats good news. I love hearing all these teams drop out. Don't ask me why, cause I'm just getting my hopes up, but man, I'm just so stinking optimistic about getting Colon and having a shot at going to the series. This is going to be the most I'd be willing to give up for Colon though. Corwin Malone, Brian West, and Tim Hummell. I'd also consider Corwin Malone, Felix Diaz, and Tim Hummell. I'd hold off on giving them Hummell, but whatever it takes to get this deal done without giving up top prospects. There's no way the Expos would take that. To get him, the Sox will have to give up one of the following: Rauch, Borchard, Honel, Crede, Garland, or Wright, unless we package up a huge quanity of our other good, but not great, prospects (e.g., Malone, Munoz, Webster, Ring, and Almonte, or something like that).
  7. To outbid the Marlins' offer of Penny, the Sox will have to offer up someone who the Expos can plug into their rotation this year. That means Biddle, Garland, Rauch or Wright.
  8. Yeah, we should send them Josh Paul and Jeff Liefer for Colon!!! Then we can trade Graffinino and Rowand for Curt Schilling!! And Sandy Alomar for Mike Piazza! Maybe the Yankees will part with Mike Mussina for Willie Harris! Come on, be realistic. The Expos gave up some SERIOUS prospects to get Colon. At one point, the Yankees were rumored to be offering Nick Johnson and Juan Rivera, two very good prospects. The Sox aren't going to get Colon for nothing. Obviously, based upon the current configuration of the team, and the lameness of the AL Central, I'd be all in favor of dealing prospects for Colon. But I think they'd probably have to trade either Garland or Rauch. KW came awfully close to trading Garland to Anaheim last year; me thinks he'll offer Garland and some prospects (maybe Munoz and/or Malone). If they're going to do the deal for prospects only, I'm guessing we will have to part with two or three of our very best (e.g., Honel, Munoz, Malone, Webster). The only caveat to all of this is if the Sox are willing ot eat the Tatis contract. If they do, the asking price goes down.
  9. Yes and no. I mean, I wouldn't want guys putting up Rowand type numbers at 1B, 3B and RF. But like I said, assuming that the other guys in the order (maggs, pk, big hurt, crede, valentin, clee) live up to expectations, Rowand will be good enough in CF, particularly in light of the fact that he does, I believe, bring a lot of energy and intensity to the table that rubs off on others.
  10. My guess is that in order to land Colon, the Sox would have to send either one of Biddle, Rauch, Wright, or Garland plus one of Munoz, Ring, Webster, Stewart or Sanders. It seems like Minaya may have overplayed his hand a bit, which might allow the Sox to cash in on Colon without giving up Rauch or Garland, but I kind of doubt it. Of course, if the Sox were willing to take on Tatis' contract as well, they could probably get Colon and Tatis for a lot less; maybe Harris, Biddle and a B-level prospect. I would love to see the Sox do that (especially since Tatis' contract is only for one more year; the payroll would end up about the same as last year and they'd have a much better rotation).
  11. I like Rowand, I like watching him play and I appreciate the energy and drive he brings out on the field every time. But I don't think he's that good. I think he'll put up Singleton-like numbers, with more power, but less defensive ability. If he gets 140 games at 500 ABs next season, I think he'll hit .245/15/60 with an OPS of about .725 or .750. I suppose I can live with that but only if the other hitters in the line-up live up to expectations. But I still would rather have Steve Finley, or a trade for Vernon Wells.
  12. Ick! I'm all for signing Valdes, but he most likely could be signed for 2 years at $3 million per year. Astacio is not as good as Valdes (or, at best, is equal to Valdes), makes WAY more money and would require us to give up someone in trade to get him. Unless he could be had for dirt cheap (e.g., Matt Ginter or Josh Paul) and unless the Mets would throw in at least half of his salary, I wouldn't touch Astascio.
  13. Where is that being reported? If you're referring to the Rogers article, it does NOT say that KW turned that deal down.
