If he was 8 feet tall, Abreu would still not have made the out at first. And Moncada should have been aware of who was running. He had plenty of time to make a better throw.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 12:00 PM) I don't understand the front office's thinking here. They certainly have gone to extremes here. First they want the veteran leadership, so they bring in a guy who is clearly "washed up". Then they reverse course and bring up a kid who they admit is a little raw, and still learning. I wan't crazy about the Rollins acquisition and even less in agreement with this one. It's too soon to be calling up Anderson. He is not a "savior" for what ails this team, and they are risking damaging his confidence. If he becomes a really great player, it will very likely be in a couple of years. In the meantime, he should be getting much more experience in AAA. His skill set is not what this team needs. He has no plate patience, which means that his OBP is not likely to be anywhere near .300 in the Big Leagues. He is not an elite defensive SS, as I have stressed in prior posts. He isn't even a left handed bat, and certainly not a power hitter. So what exactly does he bring to the table, that suggests that he needs to be rushed to the Majors, in order to help right this "sinking ship"? Even though the reasoning for this call-up seems to a driven by Rollins's ineptitude, coupled with a need to shake things up, the front office must think (hope?) that he will continue to show an impressive ability to adjust. He might have already convinced them that he has the mindset to overcome failure. Quickly.

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ May 6, 2016 -> 02:37 PM) Well, he's talking to himself a lot more at the dish....he seems to have some sort of strategy or thought process he's trying to follow and is taking his time to make sure he's doing what he needs to do. He was hammering the ball last night. Also, it seems the air humping is working for him. I can't help but think he's acting like he's about to f*** the baseball to get a mental edge. Reminds me of Jesus ....... your avatar.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Oct 17, 2015 -> 12:41 AM) In 2003 they had a two game lead over the Twins with I think 15 to go. Lost the last two games at home of the Twins series and were swept away the following week. They had the horses in 2003 and pissed it away. Again the had a three game lead in 2012 with I think 17 to go and completely fell apart and handed the division to Detroit. They had enough to win it to in 2012 and pissed it away. Ditto for blowing golden chances in 2006 by falling apart in the second half and 2010 when they had a lead in August, every relief pitcher seemingly went on the DL and they fell apart. The only consistent thing about the Sox the past 15 years has been poor second halves which has cost them dearly. How would this franchise look today, how would more importantly the perception of the franchise look if they got into the playoffs in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012? Alas we'll never know because the Sox keep blowing good chances. I'll repeat something I said earlier someplace, 'blind' loyalty towards anything...a religion, a baseball team, a government I don't care what it is, is dangerous in my opinion. Mark Religion and government I get .... baseball team, not so much. Unless you have another problem, like gambling.

White Sox Futility Under Williams/Hahn/Ventura

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 29, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) I'm really surprised by the size of the Melky Cabrera apologist society. He didn't strike me as the type of player so many would make excuses for. I'd just as soon have Melky at the plate with the game on the line, as anyone not named Abreu on this team. And his TV persona is easy to like. He seems to have fun, while giving maximum effort. Now, someone like Rios, with is smug, lackadaisical "I don't give a s***" attitude - there was someone to dislike. No excuses there. I wanted to make excuses for Gillespie - his pained, 'fear of failure' look was grating, but it made me give him a grace period. Like I was hoping his confidence or his power or a sports psychologist would show up -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 11, 2015 -> 04:32 PM) The picture worries me a bit. His hand is to full elevation before his foot hits the ground. This means the arm will start to accelerate without lower body support. The beginning of the acceleration is all arm. Not usually a good way to protect the arm. I wonder if the back issue is keeping him from complete rotation? It doesn't look like that from the picture though. Perhaps this photo captures the beginning of the extended 'pose' he has previously featured. His foot may land yet before he begins his acceleration process.

Where does Jose Abreu rank among MLB's best hitters?

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 09:17 PM) I'd be shocked if he regressed. The guy is one serious SOB about getting better. He's been in camp since Feb 4th. and he is prepared physically now for the longer season and preparing for an even longer season because of the playoffs. He had many doubters here for 2014. Don't make the same mistake for 2015. Another stroke in Abreau's favour might be that the serious Sox medical staff will have a heads up on his ankle. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 09:55 AM) If it's a minor piece like a 4th OFer or some bullpen depth then I could see it. Other than that, a trade for a 3B, 2B, or C, I just don't see, unless something happens in ST at either of those positions (hopefully no injuries). Given that the Sox are shying away from a Moncada signing due to the penalty, I will hold onto a sliver of hope for Hector Olivera. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 07:25 PM) Dont forget about 2007. Toby Hall hurt his shoulder in spring training and everyone freaked out. 90 losses later, they were right. I still get a little nauseous when I think of Robin's infamous spring training slide into home. 1997 or thereabouts.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 23, 2014 -> 11:55 AM) The issue is physical. He cannot pitch an entire MLB season as a starter. It will not be good for him physically. He should only go 160-170 innings. If the Sox begin the season with him as a starter, they will need to do as the Nationals did with Strasburg and shut him down in August. If the Sox are ina playoff race the fans will go nuts about this, even though it is the correct move. I hope they structure his conditioning such that he will be available for 'heavier lifting' at the end of the year.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 18, 2014 -> 07:53 PM) Flowers 2014 BABIP: .355 (which we can all confirm from watching had a LOT to do with ducksnorts) He had a 93 wRC+, which was exactly league average for a catcher, but he'll be substantially below that with a league average (or even career average) BABIP. Flowers is not good as he currently exists. Maybe he has upside left, but he's a comfortably below average starting catcher as of today, unless you think he's an elite game caller or something. But what about the new super Flowers ------ the one wearing glasses?

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Sep 21, 2014 -> 05:52 AM) It's just strange to me that someone can say this when he's rated as just about the single worst defensive player in all of baseball in terms of defensive runs saved per inning. I know there's issues with sample size and reliability, but they're not missing him by so much so that he's anything close to decent, the eye test will tell you that too. I've had a look back and there's not really an example of anyone who has graded as poorly as Avi early in their career and gone on to be considered a decent defensive player. Yoenis Cespedes to an extent, and he still wasn't rated nearly as badly. He looks extremely tentative. Even balls hit right at him. Guaranteed he'll have a better first step and be more assertive with experience.
-
He has the arm and wheels to acquit himself nicely as a right fielder. He seems like a prime candidate to benefit greatly from 'off the bat' reps to help with a quick, correct first step. As far as offence goes, I find that I am still comfortably in the excited fan stage when he comes up.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 1, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) Not unless they want to try Semien over at 3b, and that doesn't make much sense with Gillaspie on the big league club. I love the thought of Semien spelling for Gillaspie when pitching matchups and fatigue are factors.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 24, 2013 -> 01:08 PM) Prayers and good thoughts for Ed and his family. I remember when he played and it was him and Duane Josephson behind the plate for the Sox I thought they were a great tandem. I've always missed the Sox having a righty lefty hitting tandem like them. Equally sharing the most demanding physical position while combining for a .300 average.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 01:21 PM) What will Hawk call him since country strong doesn't apply? How about 'Commie brawn'.

I've never been to Chicago. I grew up in Toronto. But I've followed the Sox (and the Blackhawks) since 1959. My father has to get some of the credit. I'm not sure how much he liked the White Sox, but he hated the Yankees. I have fond memories us playing cribbage in a cottage in northern Ontario with a radio magically finding Bob Elson, clear as a bell. Seeing the Sox on TV in those days was a true rarity. The first game that I ever saw on TV had Early Wynn as the Sox starter. He hooked me. I couln't believe what he could make the baseball do. Many a night, I fell asleep with a transitor radio under my pillow. The nightly dog walk included going by the sandlot and using the backstop to supercharge my transistor's antenna. Now, with cable and pvr, I've seen all their games for the last 10 years. Life is good.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) I too would like that but if for whatever reason they don't want 4 lefties in the rotation then Saunders would be a good grab IMO. You mean deal Peavy and go with 5 lefties? -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 24, 2012 -> 01:03 AM) You watch every game. Do you not agree Crain is finished? I watch every game. Yesterday he reached 95. He hung a bunch of sliders, but if that constitutes finished, we might as well give away 85% of the pitching staff.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:04 AM) Hawk teaches kids these days about dinosaur baseball players with made-up and overly exaggerated information. Kids these days know that Carlos Delgado and Dayan Viciedo have the fastest bat speed in the history of the game. Hawk doesn't really educate about much these days. He speaks with confidence - great. I'd reckon 70% of what he says is pretty inaccurate. I love stuff about dinosaurs and baseball history. One of my favorite television experiences was the Ken Burns special. And I don't think it matters that I might be considered a dinosaur (60 years young). I have always found pictures and film and stories of the old days magical. I have seen every White Sox game on cable in Canada for the last 7 years. 50% of the time the announcers represent the bad guys - bummer. I loved Hawk's rant. I only got to see it in replay. I was forced to watch the Tampa announcers when it happened. They had no reaction when Quintana was tossed. I wanted to reach into the TV and strangle them.
