Mark Buehrle must be feeling snake-bitten...
Reddy replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Jake @ May 3, 2013 -> 08:44 PM) He's going to be making huge money for quite a while. I don't think the baseball was ever THAT big of a deal for him. right but his quality of life the last couple years has dropped compared to when he played for us. obviously it still ain't bad, but from his perspective it's probably less enjoyable. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2013 -> 08:24 PM) From 2008 to 2012 Floyd ranked 8th amongst all AL pitchers with 948 1/3 IP, 7th in Wins with 62, and 9th with 754 strikeouts. He might not have been the flashiest, but he was a damned important anchor in a rotation that was the basis for any Sox success. the dynamite just boomed again -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 3, 2013 -> 08:13 PM) over the last two seasons. He played on a team with World Series aspirations with a brand-new, state of the art facility that turned into a complete disaster and eventual fire sale in Miami. Then, he had all the issues with his pit bulls and being separated from his family. Now he's playing on another team that had playoff aspirations which looks to be in a state of complete collapse....soon to be 10-20. And he's gotten off to one of the worst starts in his career with a negative WAR (-0.4) Pitching against the Yankees, Orioles and Red Sox isn't going to be a recipe for success. He would probably be much better off in the NL. or in Chicago. not that i think we should've paid him that much, but dude made a huge mistake -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 3, 2013 -> 06:55 PM) Nothing screams great pitcher like a K/9 slightly above 7. Carlos Marmol. 11.66 K/9, 4th best of ALL-TIME. he's pitched over 1000 innings for us. that should shut you up, but of course, it won't. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 2, 2013 -> 08:48 AM) He's an incredibly talented baseball player who made it to the Majors one year after being drafted to play the game professionally. He is a very slick fielder and, if he can show anyting with the bat upon returning, can be a very valuable player. this. even with how bad he's been hitting, he's still out-earned his salary every year based on his defense alone. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2013 -> 06:04 PM) I wouldn't have guessed this in a million years. Christopher Kamka @ckamka 19m 39 pitchers have thrown 1000+ IP in a #WhiteSox uniform. The best K/9IP of them belongs to Gavin Floyd (7.15). boom goes the dynamite -

QUOTE (Cali @ May 2, 2013 -> 11:23 PM) I'm not saying he was supposed to be lights out, I'm saying he doesn't have like one defining moment. Like Danks is just as frustrating as Floyd, but he always has Game 163. Floyd was just.... there. Wtf? Who cares? He's been a solid workhorse for us for years. You know nothing about baseball if you think that's a common occurance. -

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 2, 2013 -> 07:07 PM) The best thing about this thread is that you guys are basically arguing with nobody. It's like a case study classic intrawebz arguments. Nobody has said AJP wasn't a hard playing, smart, durable ball player. I just didn't like the guy because he's a bat flipping, pop upping, temper tantrum throwing, s*** talking, cheap shot giving, Affliction shirt wearing, vodka shot drinking, WWF watching, douche who throws like a girl. That doesn't mean I didn't appreciate him. Though putting him in the same paragraph as Fisk and MB is kind if insulting, but I get it. and there were those of us who loved that he would step on Aaron Boone rounding third, or would give Joe Borchard $100 for homering off Brett Tomko, or would steal first base in the ALCS or get into a fight with Michael Barrett. At the time, we ALL loved voting for AJP (or should I say punching). I love that s***. That's baseball man. Baseball has always been full of douchebags and bad guys, and those are some of the guys that make the game fun. I don't want a team full of players with the personality of Paul Konerko. That'd be boring as s***. It's nice to see some fire and passion and it's awesome to have a player who unequivocally wants to win at all costs. you don't have to like it, but AJP is a fixture in white sox lore forever, and absolutely belongs in the same paragraph as Fisk, Buehrle and Konerko. Was he as good as all them? maybe not. but he was an integral part of the team that won the world series, and no other player in baseball would have stolen first base. I know I'm belaboring that point, but without him we have a much, MUCH harder time winning that ALCS, and I also give him a lot of credit in the White Sox having the most quality starts in baseball over the years he was with us. Or is that just coincidence?

you guys are ignoring that they're replacing it with a quite useful requirement. i don't agree with skipping literature, but finding somewhere to require a health/nutrition class is fine by me

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2013 -> 01:33 PM) I have a sneaky feeling we've heard the last of an effective Gavin Floyd. Man, how pitchers come and go in baseball. fixed. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 2, 2013 -> 05:44 AM) Honestly, I think our rotation will be stronger with Santiago instead of Floyd. The only thing that sucks IMO is that we now have $10M of dead payroll that will be difficult to move. crazytown. floyd is a good pitcher. i don't know why our fanbase hates him so much. -
QUOTE (Cali @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:13 PM) Also Game 2 was tied. Not like the Angels were going to wrap it up there if AJ doesn't run to first. Hell Crede might have led it off with a blast in the 10th. Bottom line 2005 was a TEAM effort and you can't elevate one player over anyone else on that team cause they all did their part. So to say without AJ they don't win the series is ludicrous. To say they definitively still win the series is much MORE ludicrous if you give Ben Davis 500 ABs. I can't believe we're even having this conversation.
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 1, 2013 -> 10:55 PM) Only AJ would have been smart enough to make the fundamental play we were all taught in little league. Has it really been so long you've forgotten that he didnt start running till he noticed josh paul had rolled the ball back to the mound? It was a calculated risk that paid off in spades. That was AJ in a nutshell.
-
QUOTE (Cali @ May 1, 2013 -> 10:11 PM) That's a bit of a stretch. If AJ was still in San Fran or some other team in 2005, I think the Sox still could have won. Without AJ we're down 0-2 to the Angels going back to SoCal in the ALCS. Without AJ our pitchers may not have thrown almost 5 complete games in a row. sit down.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 1, 2013 -> 05:08 PM) But that doens't work. You wouldn't be friends with a black person if you were truly racist. How can you be a bigot ("one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance") if you're friends with them? Logically that makes no sense. Again, I think you're bastardizing the definition here. By this very definition you are a bigot. what? of course you can have friends who are ethnic and still hold racist or stereotypical perceptions of that people as a whole shades. of. grey. the world is really not black and white i promise. EDIT: also, yes, I am bigoted against bigots.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 10:24 AM) Sometimes it is really sad how much you actively try to minimize accomplishments and events because they don't affect you personally. There are a lot of people in this world that are a hell of a lot more affected by this than you will ever admit to. this is a perfect description of the difference between those who are more conservative and those who lean more progressive - whether we're talking about social policy or... well... anything. if it doesn't affect me, it's stupid that we're talking about it. start looking at the bigger picture. it's really not that difficult.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 10:14 AM) It's not meaningless and I said this story is significant. I just don't think the ZOMG! FINALLY, A PROFESSIONAL SPORTS PLAYER HAS COME OUT, QUEUE THE PARADE! response was really justified. That's all. why not?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 10:08 AM) This is the type of hyperbolic crap I just don't buy. 2 days ago 99.9% of the country didn't know who this guy was. They'd never heard of him. And now you're telling me that a complete nobody who came out is going to help other people? Really? You don't think this is media spin just a tad because they've been waiting for this story for so long? yeah. based on the reaction from my gay friends on facebook, it absolutely helps other people. it helps the movement. how can you not get this?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) Everyone covering the story yesterday? The fact that he got a personal call from the President? I'm sure he's not LITERALLY going to get a medal, but he's being treated like a national hero. what's wrong with that?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 08:27 AM) Yeah no. SOME of them were, including some of the more prominent ones (Jefferson, Franklin and possibly Washington). Though it's still debated how to classify their beliefs since they agreed with Deist principles yet also believed God impacted human activity. The majority were, or had significant roots in, Christianity. http://www.adherents.com/gov/Founding_Fathers_Religion.html but the ones who... well... mattered. and the ones the right always fall back on as the "christian" founding fathers (franklin, jefferson, etc) were... well... not
