  1. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) You will be able to do the same amount of "calorie burn" in a shorter period of time, because you'll be able to move faster/longer...but your heart rate will be the same as it was before when you were moving slower. You would be right IF, and only if the person that gets into shape continues to run or move at the same old pace instead of increasing the pace, which they should be naturally doing. The same goes for a person doing bicep curls. If they start out at 25lbs 10 times, and never move up in weight or reps, then you'd be right...but natural progression says they'd move up or increase reps, or both. exactly! that was my point. you get gym bunnies who do the same s*** every time and they get upset when they stop losing weight.. that's all im saying
  2. Example: where i live there's a huge flight of stairs coming up from the subway. it's like almost 100 stairs. there is also an escalator, but that's besides the point. I can run up those stairs and barely start breathing heavy at all. I probably don't burn many calories doing that. someone who's out of shape, attempting the same 100 stairs, will take twice, three times, maybe four times longer than me to ascend the stairs. Their weak muscles will have to work significantly harder than mine. you're saying they won't burn more calories doing that task than I did?
  3. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 10:56 AM) That's not quite how cardio works, but ok. then explain it to me. the whole reason your heart rate rises is because the task at hand is more difficult than walking down the street, or sitting doing nothing. more muscles are firing and working, which requires more blood flow, which requires the heart to pump faster which requires more oxygen so you breathe heavier. correct so far? so when the muscles get STRONGER, they don't work quite as hard, which means the blood doesn't have to pump quite so fast, which means you don't have to breathe quite so heavy, thus you burn fewer calories. this is basic stuff. it's called a plateau. why do you think they happen if not for this reason?
  4. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 10:52 AM) Yes because it's higher intensity which means you're burning more calories. Doesn't mean that using an elliptical will lose effectiveness the more you use it. No matter how many times you use one, burning 300 calories is burning 300 calories. it will simply get harder to burn 300 calories in the same amount of time/speed as your muscles adjust/get stronger
  5. I guess it just depends on what your goals are. If your goals are JUST to lose weight and not get stronger, faster, more athletic, perform better, etc, then you're right and it's JUST about calories in/calories out, and the elliptical is "fine" after a while though, your muscles (including cardiovascular muscles) will get stronger, and the same amount of effort on the elliptical will yield fewer results because of your body's adaptation to the task at hand. So no matter WHAT your goals, you need to mix it up.
  6. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 10:31 AM) Cardio is cardio guys. If it's elevating your heart rate, it doesn't matter if it's repetitive, that means it's working, it's burning calories...and that's all it's intended to do. You may become more used to the motion, and be capable of doing it faster or longer, but it's still working. completely disagree. HIIT is much more effective than running on an elliptical.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) What's stopping a private institution from doing this research? Medical research isn't confined to government entities or government grants, they do it privately all the time (in fact i'd guess most is privately funded). that guess would be horribly wrong. most research comes with grants from the government or the gov't footing the bill. independent research is mucho $$, thus if someone wants to do it and foot the bill, they probably have a bias one way or the other - wouldn't you think?
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 09:35 AM) No, you just bring in an unbiased parties to research, who is going to look at the number of guns owned versus the number of intentional shootings in the United States. They'd likely come to the conclusion that the economical way to handle the situation would be to do nothing. For the record, I have no problem with additional steps being required for gun ownership, but there's simply no reason to take guns away, including automatic weapons. i could give you at least 26
  9. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 11:48 PM) I'd say he's more likely to get 4 and 32. which would be a steal. he's an incredibly good ballplayer. positive oWAR and dWAR every year in the bigs, and between a 2 and 6 WAR overall? Dude gets on base, dude scores runs, dude plays great defense, and has an average 111 wRC+ $8 mill a year for that production would be crazy
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 10:22 PM) For the Braves...an even trade is fine. They fill a ton of needs with a corner OF, and they don't give up either of their top 2 pitching prospects or any of their real legit, close position prospects. At the worst for them, they have a very solid, affordable OF, where the oldest guy is 29...with 2 guys who I could legitimately call "MVP caliber talents". With their bullpen, and rotation...they needed a RH bat this offseason. They lost Bourn and Prado, and walk away with both Uptons. That's a team that can compete with the Nats next year. totally agree! and the Dbacks get to start their star outfield prospect, add pitching and organizational depth, AND get a high-caliber 3B. Win-win
  11. also the reason the trade happened is they're going to extend Prado.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 09:33 PM) It's not that simple though. Prado is a guy who put up a 1.6 WAR in 590 PA as a 28 year old and then 5 WAR as a 29 year old. Calling him a 5 WAR player isn't fair, just like calling Justin Upton a 2.5 WAR player like he was last year as a 24-25 year old is a joke. Dude was a 6.4 WAR player as a 23-24 year old and his 22 year old season was 4.9 WAR. Prado's a guy 1 year from free agency who is inconsistent at the end of his prime years. Jupton is a guy 3 years from FA who had 1 down year, who has been an MVP caliber player before turning 25, who you have under affordable contract for his 25-28 year old seasons (and you have his brother until he's 30 in case you can convince him to extend for 2 years). This honestly makes the signing of his brother look a ton better to me. That was a lot of money for a 29 year old BJ. You get Justin to extend for another year or two, or just maximize his performance a bit more from the emotional comfort, and that could be a huge move. Martin Prado WAR last few years: 29 - 6 (5.8) 28 - 2 (1.8) 27 - 5 (4.9) 26 - 3 (2.8) Some Third Basemen Highlights in WAR in 2012: Wright - 7.8 Headley - 7.5 Miggy - 7.2 Beltre - 6.5 Aramis - 6.5 Zimmerman - 4.5 Encarnacion - 4.4 Hanley - 3 of those guys, Headley and Aramis are not going repeat, and Beltre is getting up there these days. all I'm saying is that you get a 3B who is capable of posting a WAR comparable with the elite players in the game, while at the WORST being a guy who gets on base and doesn't hurt you in any category (5 tool player) on top of that you get Delgado and a slew of prospects, and you get playing time for Adam Eaton. At the worst I think it's an even trade.
  13. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) Thinking back to the summer when people say we need to include both Sale and Viceido + prospects in a trade for Upton is laughable. The package the Brave sent to AZ is extremely underwhelming. Prado is a nice player, but his WAR is inflated by his defense in LF. He's going to play 3rd the the DBacks, won't likely be a 5+ WAR player again. It makes me think that we could have gotten Upton for Viceido + one of Floyd/Quintana/Santiago plus mid level prospects. I would have done it in a hiccup. 3B is a really shallow position... and a 5 WAR is a huge number. Just look at our 3B situation and tell me Prado isn't an awesome player. Prado+Delgado is not a bad haul for an underachieving outfielder, especially when they've got Eaton rarin' to go. I like it for the Dbacks.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 09:03 PM) I will always remember coming to this website on a night in 2005...I was hanging out at a bar in West Yellowstone, drunk off my tail, the Sox went to extra innings against the Mariners, I wasn't quitting until sportscenter updated with the results of that game, and the Sox won on an Iguchi HR in the 11th inning IIRC. Basically just screaming "I love this team!!!". On someone else's wireless card, which I'd never used before. That and just typing "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!" on October 26, 2005. Golden age. can you believe that's coming up on 8 years ago? crazytown.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 08:02 PM) It kinda reminds me of when legislators needed a print out to understand the "financial reforms" they were about to pass. If you don't know what you are talking about, you shouldn't be qualified to pass laws on it. (we live in a democratic republic where anyone can run for - and be elected to - office!)
  16. Why does Joss Whedon get NO love? He's obviously brilliant and has a massive following
  17. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 06:04 PM) But when he says "10 clip magazine" nobody knows wtf that means. to be honest, most people don't understand ANY of the gun-jargon that's been thrown around the last few months. and who gives a s***? it's getting banned whether you want it or not.
  18. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) Same exact concept: Dude who has absolutely no idea what he's talking about hopes to create policy based on his ignorant factpinions. And it wasn't just mixing up, it was more than that. Usually people who get clip and magazine confused simply believe they are one in the same, so how would it makes sense for 40 clips to fit inside one magazine? And the comment about clips in rounds... where do I even start? Is there a bullet out there that can store more bullets inside it to make reloading faster? But then if there were... but there cant... it doesn't make any sense. reminder: Vice President doesn't create policy.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 05:29 PM) Mixing up clip/magazine terminology isn't really that important and isn't analogous to "legitimate rape" comments. rape is always Nuke's go to analogy though, so cut him some slack. he loves that s***.
  20. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 05:13 PM) Dont you want the people banning s*** to have the slightest idea of what they're banning? If this were a Republican Senator spouting some ignorant bulls*** about rape you'd be up in arms about him being out of touch. Same applies. The vice president doesn't ban anything.
  21. Shaun Marcum to the Mets in 1 year deal I have an unreasonable love for Shaun Marcum... I have no idea why... but I've always kept an eye out for him fantasy baseball wise, because he always gives great value for his draft position. Should do well in Citi Field.
  22. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 04:28 PM) Joe Biden talked about guns today. He said something about 40 clips in a magazine and 10 clips in a round. Seriously. who cares?
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) Filibuster is not about what you say, but what it can be spun into. Its why conversations never really go anywhere productive. what else do we NEED?:
  24. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:48 PM) I dont care about poverty. In 1950 I would've cared about structural racism but 63 years later much has been done to rectify that issue, so I dont really care about that either. What I do care about is how much I pay in taxes and where that money goes. I've never heard a compelling argument from anyone as to why I should be forced at gunpoint to give my money to something I dont care about. Some say a little welfare in the short term saves us a lot of welfare in the long term, I dont care... I dont want to pay for any welfare for anyone (or anything, since corporate welfare has gotten so crazy too). I should not be forced to pay for someone else's kids' schools, or their food, or their rent or their anything. Some say there is a benefit to it (I see none) and if those people feel obligated to subsidize others and their life then they can give money on their own accord, but taking it from me is stealing. That's where I stand on this. wow. you just have no clue. please join the states that wish to secede from the union, because you have no place in a democratic republic.
