  1. yeah, the more i read up about it the more i'm realizing there's not much legal ground to stand on with these cases... it's just a shame, since i'm sure no one would think twice about boycotting or refusing a zoning permit to a company that actively and vocally supported the KKK or another anti-black group... what's the difference?
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 03:36 PM) He essentially said they wouldn't be welcome in Boston, but I don't believe they're actively trying to expand there now so there wasn't a specific threat. i think the reason he said it was because Chick-fil-A WAS actively looking to open a store there.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 07:04 AM) Like I said, there are back door ways around it. Some guys are trying to build a strip club in my hometown. The local zoning bans adult entertainment, which has been found illegal in many other venues. So instead of using that as a reason to say no, the zoning appeals board sited traffic problems that would be created, and how many kids it could endanger who go to school about a mile down the road. At the end of the day, the club owners have already stated they will sue to have it put in, because freedom of speech allows for that kind of stuff. I remember the same sort of stuff happening over mosques being put in somewhere in the Chicago burbs before. for Hooters it could be a simple as the bad publicity over the fighting a community isn't worth it to their corporation. It could well be the same issues here, but with the alderman's statements, he really f***ed it up if they decide to sue. any different than what the mayor of boston said?
  4. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 01:08 PM) I've been killing it the last 8 or so days. Feels nice to be back. congrats! been doing Body Beast - and it's cray cray. Like... by the time the workouts over i'm using like 5 and 10 pound dumbbells because i can't lift my arms. lol
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) Bottom line is we don't allow the government to discriminate against people for their religious beliefs, no matter what we personally think of. People have the free speech ability to support organizations that we don't approve of. The same thing would apply to a group like the KKK. They have the right to exist, and we can't stop that, no matter what they say. Political donations are protected free speech. i guess it all depends if the donations were made by the COMPANY or just the CEO as a person then doesn't it?
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 12:39 PM) So I can not rent to Muslims because they give to anti-female organizations? BS. are the muslims operating a business that is privy to anti-discrimination laws or a private religious institution that can do whatever it wants?
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 12:37 PM) Except they are being denied for no other reason than religion. It would be the equal of not renting to Muslims. haha the religion part doesn't MATTER if the company is making donations to anti-gay groups! THOSE actions can be said to be indicative of the company as a whole's beliefs.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 01:16 PM) Most Muslim sects don't give women the same rights as men. How many of them haven't been allowed to open mosques specifically because of said discrimination? Not allowing something specifically because of their religious views is illegal. There are backdoors around it, usually bs zoning issues, but to flat out blame it on a religious issue is the very definition of discrimination, and is opening the City of Chicago up to a big lawsuit. Chick-fil-A is not a religious organization, thus your point is moot.
  9. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 01:00 PM) http://gizmodo.com/5928926/chick+fil+a-got...irl-on-facebook that's just awesome.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 12:30 PM) Seems to me like it would be a pretty cut and dried case too. Especially if they had gotten far on the project, and it was torpedoed because of religious statements. I've seen lawsuits over much lesser things. the problem is it's religiously discriminatory. the company contributes to anti-gay groups...
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 08:50 AM) I miss my former alderman. yeah that was pretty awesome. i love how the world be a changin' slowly but surely.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 09:17 AM) So what is your all-time favorite Random Hawk exclamation? I'm not talking about his regular catch-phrases, I am talking about when something big happens and something slips out that you haven't heard before, such as "You've gotta be bleepin' me" or "It's all good" from last night. "it's all good" last night was amazing.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:11 PM) There are natural sweeteners like Truvia. I also seem to remember that you need to consume a ridiculous amount of artificial sweeteners to be at risk for cancer. Like 1/2 pound a day or something. getting back to monsanto and GMO testing for a second... StrangeSox, however did they test for something like that if it only affects you over a long period of time?
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 12:29 PM) Yeah, well then I can't eat or drink anything anymore. the opposite of true. just nothing that's prepackaged and processed.
  15. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 07:07 PM) I think it tastes good Doesn't have anything bad for you in it, but I also wouldn't go in expecting any performance benefits. You'll be hydrated a little better but it is not an electrolyte drink -- as a calorie free beverage it should be an excellent way to feel like you're getting something tastier than water without the "guilt" of drinking a sugary beverage. It makes sense as a non-activity compliment to the Gatorade line if one was to live the company's ideal of consuming their products in every applicable setting. There are small amounts of vitamins, but the forms of those are not stated and the amounts aren't particularly high anyways. Basically, if this drink is making or breaking your daily vitamin intake there is a problem This is akin to drinking a diet, non-caffeinated soda without the carbonation that can turn some people off. So? Drink as your heart desires and enjoy the yumminess. if it's sweet and zero cal doesn't that mean it has artificial sweeteners? you seem to know your s*** - what are your thoughts on those?
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 02:51 PM) Carbohydrates undoubtedly improve workouts. Electrolytes are excellent and while you may not always need them, there's really no such thing as too much. B vitamins have very poor oral bioavailability (ever heard of B12 injections?) but almost nobody that eats meat has a deficiency. I don't know that folks should be drinking Gatorade just casually throughout the day and simple sugars aren't necessarily the best choice in the pre/intra workout application...but they taste better and they work. My personal preference is to drink as few calories as possible but slamming a little packet of Gatorade Prime before a long basketball game doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. agree with all of that.
  17. he's a tool and i hate him as a person and a player. won't root for him to do well, but as a GM, and from a purely baseball perspective, KW made a good move.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 12:16 PM) It's not about Gatorade. It's about you turning into this hyper-judgmental nazi about everything except Beachbody products. The product I mentioned is basically a pouch of liquid that provides you with a way to quickly digest potassium, b vitamins, sodium, and carbs; all of which are good if you are planning on running around for 2-3 hours in the 100 degree heat. Look, I eat probably just as good or better than 90% of people on earth. My diet consists of 90% vegetables and fruit. With a very small amount of meat, cheese, and nuts thrown in for protein. I eat very little processed foods, save for the meat and cheese which is probably considered "processed." I usually eat a protein bar or a banana prior to playing basketball, and then I bring along either G2 or coconut water. I sweat a lot. Humans are still not particularly efficient in that they shed water and salt when expend energy and release heat/cool down. These are valuable commodities when you're exercising and out of the sun. I am sure I could find more optimal solutions if I wanted to spend more time or money, but honestly, I don't think drinking Gatorade one morning a week is going to kill me. It certainly helps replenish nutrients and salt more quickly than water. Now I know you didn't need an explanation of my diet, but you seem to be lecturing all of us on the quality of said diets, so I thought maybe it would be helpful for your further lectures. sigh. there are plenty of awesome products out there that don't come from beachbody. i use and eat plenty of them. i never once commented on your diet or your choices. when did i say that drinking a gatorade would kill you? given your description of the product, you're right - it does seem like it would be beneficial for you in those circumstances, and that's all i was asking. good lord. sorry if i've come across as hyper judgmental lately, i'll try and ease off. obviously i'm a fan of beachbody products (because they work - i'm not some mindless zombie slave that latches on to fads). but more than that, i'm excited about all the potential in eating well. doing so is still a relatively new thing for me and I'm developing a passion for it. I thought YH and my conversation was plenty civil but I guess you didn't? I'm pretty sure I conceded to a lot of his points. but whatevs. you'll think what you think and i'll think what i think. there are worse causes to champion than eating healthy and getting in shape.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 09:11 PM) Oh for the love of god, Reddy...enough of the preaching. You f***ers go run full court with kids 10-15 years younger than you for 150 minutes in 95 degree heat and then tell me what to drink. It's sodium and potassium and vitamin b, with 25 grams of carbs. i didn't think gatorade making crappy products was an issue people disagreed with... my bad.
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) Ran full court for about 2.5 hours today...we play every saturday morning. Such a huge difference if I am in the middle of my P90X workouts or if I am not. Tons and tons of more stamina. Tried that Gatorade "Prime" stuff...seemed like it gave me a bit of a boost. i mean... is it anything other than sugar and water? gatorade tends to make crap products, but i haven't tried the prime before.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) every single electronic gadget we own: likely incorporates materials gathered by child slaves forced to work in mines by bandit militias sorry but there's a difference between "likely" and "i know exactly where my money's going"
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) No, now. Why do you think people are getting all these cancers and what not? It is because there were no long term studies done. THAT'S exactly my point! Isn't that proof enough that we should be testing the food we eat!?
  23. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 01:07 PM) Ate Chick Fil A for lunch today; don't like their politics but love the food. so by eating the food you're supporting the politics... but that doesn't matter to you?
  24. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) That is precisely what has been done with all the other foods you eat... yeah 10,000 years ago...
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 08:21 AM) Well, that seems like a fair point to me. so we're supposed to just force it down the american publics' throat, saying "we don't know what long term effects it could have" and just wait and see what happens? how many times throughout history have practices that were considered "SAFE AND BENEFICIAL" at the time, been proven to be the exact opposite? Leeching comes to mind...
