QUOTE (G&T @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) My wife and I are thinking of going to see The Book of Mormon or something on Broadway. So these are places I might have to check out if we do. when are you going? because if you wanna see Mormon, get tickets NOW. It is sold out forever.

Slumdog Millionaire The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Frost/Nixon Milk The Reader these were the movies nominated. I think The Wrestler should have been up there as well, but it wasn't. Out of THOSE 5 - I'd have liked to see Milk win. I liked Slumdog - but I wasn't rooting for it to win. I think Milk and Frost/Nixon were both better. my only point was that both of THOSE films also have an agenda. That's the point of movies. And whichever won - people would have found ways to complain. That's all I'm saying.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) First of all, I hadn't noticed until very recently exactly how snide you are. Not sure if that's a recent trend or if I just hadn't noticed. Secondly, I added more than just the Holocaust/gay/handicapped scenario. The Jamie Foxx Best Actor was given to him for portraying a music legend that had recently died, except it wasn't the best performance that year. His portrayal of Charles was basically Eddie Murphy's impersonation of Stevie Wonder. The following year, unfortunately for Joaquin Phoenix since he provided a better performance and the best of that year, the same situation was there. But they didn't give him the award, and I'd bet it's almost entirely based on the fact that another actor won for playing a similar character only a year before. you didn't respond to my actual post. you said Slumdog won over other deserving films. which ones? and had one of those won over the rest, would you be claiming IT had an agenda instead? that's all i'm asking. sorry to be snide. EDIT: nevermind. thanks for responding.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 02:13 PM) The problem is that about half of those were chosen over better candidates. It's not just those particular cases either. Slumdog Millionaire won over about half a dozen better movies that year. I can't explain it perfectly, but it was shoved down our throats as a feel-good, never-give-up-hope, help-yourself picture in a down economic year. It's just that they often choose a movie or actor to make a statement rather than the most deserving one. i actually just don't think that's true. with Slumdog if Milk had won you'd be making the SAME argument. Or Frost/Nixon. If any of those had won you'd be saying there was an "agenda"

QUOTE (G&T @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) I've been there a few times on short trips. Once for New Years. My favorite memories come from just walking Manhattan and eating and drinking as you go. We (wife and I) walked from Battery Park to Midtown and went through Soho and Washington Square. It took the better part of a day. I still remember the random restaurant that I could never find again in Soho that served one hell of a brunch. Or walking through Central Park and just taking it in. It's a hell of a place. I've also been there and planned everything and enjoyed what we did but felt more stressed. NY is crowded. No, I mean it is REALLY crowded. The cabs are great but getting around without leaving time to just relax will become stressfull. On some level you have to plan because restaurants require reservations well in advance but NY is a city you can just walk outside and enjoy. Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill is good but nothing I'd go out of my way for. Eat at the food carts! Especially when drunk. When I went I was usually staying with my brother and the chicken and rice cart was good stuff. totally. cabs suck in midtown. it takes LONGER in a cab than it would just taking the subway. no joke. and brunch-wise, a little place in the West Village called Good has the best friggin brunch there is. (disclaimer i have not experienced anywhere near all the brunches "there is")

From Newark, actually I think the busses are super easy. Like $12 or $15 gets you from EWR to Midtown so much faster and hassle free than the train. That said, I've done the train plenty, and that works too. But if you're on vacation, go out to the street and find the sign that says "busses to manhattan every 15 minutes". And you can definitely stay in Jersey. It'll take you 20 minutes by bus/train/taxi and you'll be in the heart of midtown. a much, much more attractive option if you wanna save some coin. Personally i HATE times square. I don't really think it gives you anything you can't get in another major city - just with more flashy lights and more annoying people than you can possibly handle. The only thing it's good for is Broadway. GO SEE A SHOW while you're here. There's a lot of great stuff on Bway right now - just steer clear of Spiderman.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 07:35 AM) Never realized how ugly nor goofy looking Mark Buehrle was. It's amazing the difference a hat and a button up shirt can make. well he is wearing a clown costume... that's part of it.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 10:00 AM) Since 1960. There have been 9 awards out of 255 given to a movie or actor/actress involving either being gay, mentally retarded or the Holocaust. Best picture - Rain Man, Forrest Gump and Schindler's List. Best actor - Milk, Capote, Rain Man, The Pianist, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. I may have missed a few, but That's not really an agenda. don't try and use your logic here. it is unwelcomed with this crowd.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 27, 2012 -> 01:33 PM) One thing I have a slight problem with is how obvious it was that Christopher Plummer and Meryl Streep were going to win. It's like, now that they're old they have to win. All the sudden, Streep can't lose, and these stupid "Oscars for the olds" are screwing over those deserving who will never get another chance. Plummer completely deserved it though. He was amazing in Beginners and Steep hadn't won since 1982. That is HARDLY "Streep can't lose"

QUOTE (Tuna @ Feb 26, 2012 -> 02:09 PM) If you take tips out of the equation, then a waiter's job is no different than any other customer service based job. So, that would mean that if you're getting paid your hourly wage, you are expected to give good customer service if you want to keep your job. There are parts of everyone's job that they don't paticularly like, but as a adult, you have to grin and bear it if you want to pay the rent. That's the "concept" I'm having trouble grasping. but those jobs aren't reliant on your customers' mood to make your money.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 26, 2012 -> 01:53 PM) Then you probably shouldn't be b****y when you get treated with the same level of dedication on a compensatory basis. i've already said this. I'm a good server. I'm good at what I do. But ONLY because I get tipped. If I didn't I wouldn't be. not a tricky concept.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Feb 26, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) Aah, an a$$hole New Yorker with an inflated sense of superiority. Yeah, I didn't go to a public school. I did private and magnate schools, so don't go assuming I'm an idiot. haha it was a joke. sorry to offend

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 26, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) So servers do not have any pride or motivation in doing a good job? They are somehow motivated differently than the millions of other workers in a service industry? That is sad. I guess then if you were hiring people for a non commissioned or tip based job you would not hire a restaurant server because they would not be motivated to do a good job? Do you carry that same attitude to work as an actor? Simply put, yes, they ARE motivated idfferently than other service industry workers. the vast majority of servers are doing that job as a means to an end. that end being a day when they can pay their rent solely as an artist, actor, singer, musician. I don't give a s*** about my serving jobs, and that's why i bounce from restaurant to restaurant. Once the relationship stops working (ie: them getting pissed about me requesting time off for shows, swapping shifts because of auditions) I stop working for them and go somewhere else. My passion is acting. That's all I care about. Serving is, like I said, a necessary evil that goes with the territory, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it or like it. Right? I'm supposed to take pride in a job where b****y people like to do everything they can to pay me less and make it harder for me to make rent and have a decent quality of life, all because they thought the chicken pot pie was too watery? Yeah sorry no. Guess I'm not as good a person as you are Tex.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 26, 2012 -> 01:06 AM) Yes amazing show, unfortunately with a major letdown ending yeah somewhat. i guess i expected a bigger bang for my buck at the end, and i kind of called how it ends way back at the beginning, but I didn't think it was terrible. that said, how Mary McDonnell didnt win an Emmy or Golden Globe somewhere along the line kind of blows my mind. She was amazing.

just finished Battlestar Galactica on Netflix. hot damn that was a good show. I think it rivals Lost for me. I still have Lost as number 1, because it had me so much more emotionally invested (apparently by my reaction to the last episode) but Battlestar was so fracking awesome. I got through it waaaaay too fast. lol
