QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2017 -> 01:45 PM) lol, weren't you just complaining that people wouldn't listen to you because of who you were and your background? Nice work there. Straight men just don't exactly tend to have a very good frame of reference regarding women's rights issues. I finally came face to face with the abortion issue the other night for the first time (wasn't me, but a very good female friend), and it was much, much different to deal with it in reality than it is hypothetically on internet message boards. And since none of us have that context, I don't think it does much good discussing it. I think we should take our cues from and listen to women regarding this issue, and a lot of women have problems with Bernie's history on this topic.
-
Although honestly, having a conversation about Bernie Sanders and his problematic history on women's rights issues with a bunch of straight dudes probably isn't the best use of my time.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 24, 2017 -> 01:30 PM) Maybe, but even saying he "prioritizes" economic issues over women's rights is ridiculous. You also say that as if these two issues are somehow totally separate from each other and are not deeply related. So if he's willing to overlook an anti-choice stance in a fellow "progressive" because they agree on economic policy, that doesn't mean he clearly prioritizes one over the other? Explain.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 24, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) Bernie Sanders is against human rights. He also hates women. Yes, because saying someone prioritizes one thing over another, that's equivalent to saying he's AGAINST the latter. GMAFB. You're not that dense.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 24, 2017 -> 10:22 AM) Rock, I know this is a generalization, but I swear it seems like every damn kid I see today under 24 claims to suffer from anxiety, have panic attacks or are otherwise mental midgets. They can't handle sales jobs. They would have to talk to people, be nice, etc. After spending most of the teen years with online relationships, how do they handle real life interactions? They don't, hence panic attacks and anxiety. I see it with most of my younger son's friends (18) and even with some of the older son's friends (23). Yeah. That's a generalization and generally BS. For instance, most political campaigns are entirely run on 18-24 year olds, and that job includes talking to a ton of people every single day about difficult and charged subjects. Stop with the Millennials are terrible BS. It's completely and factually untrue.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 23, 2017 -> 11:29 PM) http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/23/politics/ber...ello/index.html Reddy will enjoy this one, Sanders taking heat for supporting Democratic anti-abortion mayoral candidate in Omaha. There are definitely two sides to this one, and both are easy to see but hard to reconcile as a Democrat. This is old news. At least 4 days ago news. And it coincided with his diss on Ossoff. It's part of why I was so pissed about the latter situation. Fortunately, enough people like me tweeted the hell out of it that it forced him to change his view on Ossoff (at least publicly). As for Mello, I think Bernie has always been this way. He's always prioritized his economic policies ahead of everything else, including human/women's rights, and I'm glad people are seeing that now.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 23, 2017 -> 11:16 PM) 1. Gorsuch 2. McMaster/Mattis, stabilization of national defense team and prevention of WWIII, return to traditional NATO/anti-Russian posture 3. Rollback of some but not all regulations (37 executive orders so far) 4. This is a big one for traditional Republicans, military (albeit largely symbolic) action against Syria after Obama bluffed but didn't pull the trigger 5. Belief instilled in quite a few members of the middle class that Trump cares more about protecting American jobs than "globalists" Obama/Clinton, this is one of the areas where he's above 50% in public opinion polls/surveys 6. Standing up to "illegal immigrants/sanctuary cities" and labeling radical Islamic terrorism, which has been reinforced by recent events in Europe, the French elections, Brexit, etc. That's what I would expect to hear. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said the Democratic Party was out of touch, as did 62% for the Republican Party. Less than a third said either party was "in touch." Trump fared slightly better than the parties, with 58% saying he was out of touch. http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/23/politics/don...poll/index.html In what world have we seen stabilization and "prevention" of WWIII??? As far as I've seen we've accelerated towards it. And everything you listed are things he's SAID - not things he's actually DONE. He hasn't legislated a damn thing. The only accomplishment, as far as I've seen, is Gorsuch.
-
QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 23, 2017 -> 10:15 PM) My official stance is Trump's term so far has been a moderate success. I'm sorry, what?? You used to be one of the more moderate, rational people here. What about this 100 days would you say was successful? I'm honestly curious.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 23, 2017 -> 11:28 AM) I wouldn't vote for him, but I at least respect him. He stands up for what he believes and sticks with those beliefs. I mean, sort of.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 21, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) Pressure applies both ways. How dare I hold the Great Bernie Sanders accountable in exactly the way he asks we hold our Democratic reps accountable.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 21, 2017 -> 02:14 PM) That's not good enough for Reddy. It's plenty good enough for me. I'm glad he capitulated to public pressure. He's finally doing his job, and I appreciate that. But way to keep mud slinging like a typical Berner.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:58 PM) This isn't even an argument I want. I generally like Sanders. I think it does take a lot to really pull an institution like the Democratic party out of its status quo. BUT, if Sanders fans want to know what annoys me most, it's acting like there was no progressive movement in the democratic party prior to them mentioning it. To look at the 2012 platform vs. the 2004 one is crazy. To look at it vs 1996 even crazier. I hated Bill Nelson, Ben Nelson Mary Landreiu, Blanche Lincoln so much. But, as much as they made ACA much worse, they still voted for it. They made it capable to pass things. So yeah, I'll take a congress with people like this again, so don't primary Joe Manchin just to prove a point. That makes all three of us on the same page. Although the more this plays out, the less respect I have for Sanders. But otherwise, fundamentally, you and I agree on everything after the BUT

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) Just a reminder the under the 2 years of Pelosi as speaker she passed a Health Care bill, a cap and trade bill, dodd-frank, lily ledbetter, DREAM act immigration reform bill and a stimulus package. I.e. more progressive work than Sanders has come close to. these are the total bills sponsored by Bernie Sanders that were enacted by Congress and signed into law: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/brow...7#enacted_ex=on But hey! He named a post office!
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:34 PM) I get why people really don't like some of the Dems like Feinstein, but I'll never get the Pelosi hate. She seems to do a pretty good job of wrangle all of the Democratic cats in the House, and the House version of the ACA was a good bill with a public option. It's far left adopted far right rhetoric. Par for the course.

In special elections, turnout is crazy and unpredictable. Bernie has incredible power over the millennial demographic, and even a modicum of support could increase blue voter turnout in a statistically significant way.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:27 PM) What a bulls*** article. Figures Democrats would "be sick of Sanders". Why would you want to listen to the politician with the highest approval rating in the country. Maybe they should get sick of Pelosi of Schumer. Pelosi and Schumer are party building and supporting candidates like Jon Ossoff. Bernie isn't. Never going to be ok with that. Purity tests are not going to win us the House in 18.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:27 PM) Then who cares what Bernie Sanders thinks about that race? Do you really think he lost because of Bernie? 1) He didn't lose. He won by 27% 2) I'm just tired of Bernie people complaining about the DNC not supporting far left candidates while Our Revolution and BS won't support anything less than far left candidates. It's hypocritical and annoying. 3) If Bernie didn't want to be a leader within the Democratic Party, he shouldn't have accepted the job of head of outreach. Given that title, it's his responsibility to - at a minimum - tweet support for Democrats in winnable races across the country.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) The demands that democrats running in WV or Georgia red districts need to be as progressive as those in Vermont will not end well. I'm on team Markos right now, but considering how wrong I was on 2016 election I'm not going to say Sanders is wrong. I do like that he believes the progressive message works anywhere. I continue to dislike that he can act like he is more of a progressive champion than Tom Perez, who has accomplished much more. It doesn't work in GA-6. Even the Democrats there live in McMansions.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:20 PM) Indeed. And for whatever flaws he has as a candidate, they're not as bad as the flaws I see in most establishment Dems. you don't mind his hypocrisy regarding Ossoff/Mello/Quist? you are fine with him - as the Head of Outreach for the Democratic Party (official title) not tweeting in support of Ossoff on the day of the most important election that district has seen in 40 years?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:18 PM) The first two things are completely obvious. specifically regarding his decision not to support Ossoff because he doesn't live up to Sanders' purity test, while Mello in Nebraska somehow does, even though he's Pro-Life, and Quist in Montana does, even though he's pro-gun. The difference? The latter two supported Bernie last year. Coincidence? Nah.
-
BTW I'm so completely sick of Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders’s strange behavior

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 04:03 PM) But Utah Republicans are expecting him to resign soon? Utah Republicans expect Chaffetz to resign twitter rumors about an affair but who knows Where there's smoke. This wouldn't be happening if there weren't a reason. Love these family values Republicans
-
Oh, and interestingly, all the attention is on how much out of state money Ossoff has raised, but he was STILL outspent by GOP super PACs and dark money sources in the district.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 11:33 AM) This blew me away. That is 0.001% of money that was local in this election. It will be interesting to see what happens, as this race had 10 Republicans in it prior to the election. Now that there is one candidate to center on, I am sure the GOP will start pounding in the outside money in as well. Neither party nationally wants the headlines for a loss as each is going to claim it as a referendum if they win, and downplay it if they lose. https://www.publicintegrity.org/2017/04/17/...0-national-cash Definitely. As bmags said, the enthusiasm gap is quite large. There's a pretty significant "Never Handel" contingent among Republicans in GA, because she's been such a disaster so many times, and Jon is moderate enough that he was able to garner decent GOP support even in the "primary". I spoke with numerous Republicans on the ground that wanted to send a message to Trump by voting for Ossoff. It's a pretty fascinating dynamic down there.

Oh, and turnout was 44% - equivalent to a normal midterm. Typical special elections run about 18-20%
