QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:58 PM) The voter suppression stuff is confusing to me because even where it exists it doesn't change the outcome. If poor minorities are the target, where do poor minorities live? In big cities. Which vote democrat anyway. Weird, I was under the impression there were a lot of poor minorities in southern states.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:52 PM) How so? I just don't get how there was never a necessity to have an ID to vote from the get go. How do they moderate if people already voted? How they do they know an individual is a legal citizen from that state? Don't poor conservatives typically live out in the sticks and poor liberals typically live in big cities? I would imagine it's easier to get an ID in the south side of Chicago than it would be in Appalachia no? People really think these policies are the reason Trump won by 77 electoral votes? Have you like... never voted? When you register to vote you're in the big ole booklet. If you're not registered, you're not in the booklet. It's.... it's really simple.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) Steve, He wont get impeached. Impeachment would be from the House, and the House is controlled by Republicans. Even if he somehow was impeached, he wont get convicted in the Senate. Its more likely he just quits. Congress actually has very little love for Trump. I think there is still possibility he gets impeached if he pisses off the GOP leadership enough times by undermining and belittling them - something he's likely to do a lot of.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:46 PM) Never said you couldn't say it whenever you want. Just underlining the fact that the ideologues are everything that's wrong with politics in this country and likely the process that allowed someone like Trump to get an opening. The government is free to grab more power and continue its expansion because the people are more concerned with their team winning than the livelihood of the country. The government is the opposition not the people who share different opinions than you. American politics since 2001 are divide and conquer to a tee. I've spent all morning reading facebook posts from Trump supporters saying people like me, and anyone involved in the protests aren't "real americans" The other side uses "us" and "them" just as much as the left. Let's get off that high horse.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) What is a non-partisan rationale for voter suppression laws and opposition to them? Is the idea that the requirement to show an ID disproportionately affects the left? I have never put any time into learning this stuff. Perhaps it's more than having an ID and I don't understand it but that seems like not much of an issue. Everyone I know has an ID. Yes, it disproportionately affects the left. Why do you need a driver's license if you live in an inner city with a public transit system? Or what if you're elderly and don't drive and no longer have a license? QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:36 PM) You're supposed to say we when talking about the country not when talking about your political preference. This bipartisan stuff is absolutely awful for the people. Divide and conquer. I can actually say 'we' whenever I'd like. To me, you're a 'them', and I'm just fine with that.

raBBit just said Trump's campaign empowered women. That's a thing that was said.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:24 PM) By all means then, the Dems should keep doing what they are doing because everything is fine. I mean it isn't like they have lost the House, the Senate, and the Presidency in the last eight years. You love drawing false conclusions don't you? Where did Balta say Dems should keep doing what they're doing? We need to learn from the Tea Party and the Kochs, and focus on grassroots campaigns and races for local offices like schoolboard, town council, state legislature, etc, so we can undo the gerrymandering.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:18 PM) How do I log my request when Dick Durbin's line keeps going to voicemail and then hanging up on me? 5calls.org is a pretty kickass site for all the phone calling you could ever want to do, though it does only list one # for Durbin.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) Reddy, Playing into it does nothing. Just let him/her have their meltdown. I mean the person who should really be offended here is me. I didnt even make the cut to be b****ed about. Yeah, but it sure is fun. Sorry you weren't a good enough whiner. I'm an expert, I can give you tips some time.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:23 PM) So mad about posts that they have to register an account to lash out incoherently, too much of a coward to use their normal account. #TrumpsAmerica I've never seen more fear and cowardice than I've seen from the straight white male population of this country over the last few years.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) Here's the basic problem with this logic: you're using Donald Trump as an example of successfully firing up his base, when he: 1. Lost the popular vote badly 2. Would have lost in a blowout, with a bigger vote difference than the 2012 election, had it not been for the intervention of the FBI and crimes committed by a foreign power to aid him 3. Might very well have lost despite the others had it not been for voter suppression laws 4. Might very well have lost despite all the others had the media not gone along with #2. How much of a lesson can you take from a race decided by the FBI director as much as anything else? I'm so glad you said it, but it's what I was thinking. Agreed 100%

QUOTE (Obama35 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:05 PM) You guys are some cry baby b****es. It's funny reading all these posts. Obama f***ed this country up more than words can describe, yet you little girls are crying and it's only been 5 days for my man Trump to be in office? Gonna be a long 8 years for you ladies. annnnd ban? Haha I hadn't seen the rest of the posts when I made this one. That was fun. lol

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 11:47 AM) By the way, all the marching and yelling is good, but if you want to get the most bang for your buck, it's three simple things: 1. Get involved in community organzations 2. Vote 3. RUN FOR OFFICE I mean, look at the candidates being run out there. Look at the 2016 Illinois House and Senate races - in half of them, someone ran unopposed. Seriously - in a state that is the massive fiscal disaster that Illinois is, neither party can find enough candidates to run for the f***ing Congressional seats! Agreed. And yeah, that Indivisible site is an amazing resource. Forget who posted it, but it bears repeating: Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 11:22 AM) To me, the fear is that, unless the Republicans in Congress stand up to this behavior early, there's a risk of normalizing Trump's behavior. If he's signing an Executive Order to publish all crimes committed by immigrants, or chasing voter fraud based on a second hand, racist, anecdote from a German friend of his, and that's the baseline of his behavior, anything that falls below that level of crazy seems reasonable by comparison. The Democrats can't do anything (other than use the filibuster) to stop Trump's agenda. Some Republicans in the Senate are going to have show the world that moderate Republicans still exist. any actual legislation requires 60 votes.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 11:07 AM) I just moved all of my funds from Chase bank to a local credit union, including me and my wife's retirement funds.

Contact info and scripts for calling your representatives. This site is the best: https://5calls.org/#

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) How come Anonymous or others can't hack into his files and release his taxes. He's probably dumb enough to have it on an unsecure personal laptop. They're working on it. Wikileaks is on it, too.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) Keep pressure on your representatives and senators. A few thousand calls out of millions of people can be enough to influence their votes and positions. I posted a link in the dem thread, but find local organizations and do what you can to help build grassroots movements. I know I've been too passive myself. Find out what campaigns you can volunteer for once the 2018 elections ramp up even if they're not your district, and don't forget about local elections coming this April. This

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 10:59 AM) But I have no idea what we can do to combat this other than start shooting rockets at the White House. Dear Internet, I am not proposing that anyone shoot rockets at the White House. I believe President Trump to be a great and honorable man. I will go quietly when the black cars arrive here in 15 minutes. But in seriousness, what can a caring citizen of the United States do other than place phone calls and send emails? March. I'm not kidding. I know many think it's a waste of time and energy, but I think John Lewis may disagree. And it gets deep under Trump's skin. The more we piss him off and the more unstable he gets, the more likely he is to do something so ridiculous that he'll have to be impeached - or not - in which case things get reeeeally fun. Beyond that, support lobbyist organizations like the ACLU and the Sierra Club, divest from big banks, refuse to spend your money on products that benefit Trump and the Kochs. Our greatest voice is the way we spend our money. Join up with local organizations and volunteer, organize, support local candidates for school board and town council, etc etc etc. There are so many ways we can be a part of the revolution.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 25, 2017 -> 11:00 PM) Why are you guys fighting about Clinton in the Republican thread? Fighting about Clinton is about the least important thing that anyone could discuss. I could NOT agree more. There's literally no point in talking about the election anymore.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 25, 2017 -> 09:25 PM) Reddy, why did she want to be President, other than to be the first woman? It was never crystal clear. I don't even remember her campaign tagline, but we all know Trump's and Obama's. They tried 2-3 different ones but nothing stuck. Uh. This is fundamentally untrue. They had one slogan: Stronger Together One. From the beginning. And it's still being used at all of the rallies nationwide. Why did Trump want to be President??? Are you seriously saying Clinton is more narcissistic than Trump?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 25, 2017 -> 09:33 PM) See third paragraph. Bill Clinton saw it coming a mile away. But Mook would never listen to him. You would think all of his political experience would have been an asset. Look where that speech was given, and when. Said Clinton: "It's a devastating thing for a person to get up and look in the mirror every morning and think every tomorrow is going to be like yesterday. I can tell just by looking in your faces you know that just by being here, you can make your tomorrows different if you choose. That's what we've got to do for all Americans so we can all rise together." (That's why she lost, they thought Trump would change things!) Minnesota Sen. Al Franken was also on hand to address the audience. Clinton said Franken's endorsement — and others — shows that Hillary Clinton is popular outside the political establishment, even as he touted endorsements from lobby groups. "You really think Al Franken is part of the political establishment? Planned Parenthood, the Human Rights Campaign, the League of Conservation Voters? All the Latino organizations, the American Nurses Association, the Congressional Black Caucus?" he said. Clinton also spoke about his wife's plan for student loan refinancing and making tuition aid more accessible to those in need if they are willing to work for it. (Too little, too late...Sanders already owned that issue.) http://www.wpr.org/bill-clinton-campaigns-hillary-appleton I do wholeheartedly agree that Mook was the weak link in all of this. He's responsible more than any other person, IMO.
