End of the day, the indisputable facts are that a police officer used an illegal choke hold on a non-violent perp, and accidentally killed him. That, my friends, is negligent homicide or manslaughter at the very least. And undeniably deserves a f***ing INDICTMENT - which isn't a f***ing CHARGE. You can argue all you want about whether the cop deserves to do time for murder, but THAT'S not the discussion. The discussion is whether or not he deserves to GO THROUGH THE LEGAL SYSTEM like ANY other human being who did what he did. That's not justice, no matter what side of the isle you're on.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) See, it's not that simple. A shot and someone ending up dead is usually easy to show the proximate cause. Let's say a cop shoots someone, in the shoulder or chest, something not necessarily life threatening but possibly life threatening, and then that person jumps into a car and immediately gets into a car crash that definitely kills him. Would you charge the cop (or whomever) for murder? I don't think this case is as simple as "choke hold = death." I'm guessing, but i'd imagine that's what the hang up was here for the grand jury. so you're saying the fact that this guy was fat absolves the police officer of the responsibility of considering the health of his perp before he attempts an illegal choke hold that could kill someone in this man's condition? got it. even the right wing pundits don't agree with you on this one. lol just absurd.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) Totally depends on the circumstances, but maybe. Again though, the choke hold wasn't the only act that caused the death. I'm not sure what the testimony was/would be about how much of a factor it was. Based on that, any cop that handcuffed him and forced him to lie on the ground should also be charged with his death. you realize how absolutely ridiculous your reasoning is, right? so the choice that ONE officer made to perform an illegal choke hold on a non-violent man shouldn't matter because two other guys there didn't stop him? I love how Repubs are all "PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY" until it's convenient.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 01:02 PM) The problem is you can't link the guys death directly to that one officer. The med examiner listed the chokehold as one of a number of factors. So if you shoot someone in a typically non-lethal spot, but they're anemic and they bleed out, that's not on you?

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 01:02 PM) If I put someone into a chokehold and they died, I would certainly have a manslaughter or negligent homicide case against me. ^

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) Probably an unpopular opinion: I kinda agree with the decision not to indict Pantaleo for murder. I mean, the choke hold was for a matter of seconds, and after the choke hold is over he's still alive, still breathing (even if he's saying it's difficult to do so). If you're going to charge Pantaleo, don't you have to charge all of the officers for letting the guy lay there in a position where he's unable to breathe? I think that's a clear civil liability case. No doubt about it, the NYPD should pay. But criminal charges? Decades or life in jail for that? I don't think I can go there. It's... it's an ILLEGAL choke hold man. Sorry, there's just literally ZERO wiggle room on this one.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) Beachy is a converted position player, so the arm troubles were predictable. Medlen has had two TJSs. I would proceed with extreme caution. I'd be all over Beachy on an incentive-laden deal.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) How does this throw a wrench into my plans? Making a lot of money is relative to your life situation. I have two kids and a stay at home wife to support. I need to make enough to comfortably support them, a house, two cars, take vacations, etc. And I still want the time to do the frivolous things that I love like posting on Soxtalk or playing World of Warcraft (which I do). If I had followed my dreams to be an artist, I most likely wouldn't make enough to support the life I've chosen to live and I'd have to work far longer hours, which I absolutely don't want to do. I was just messing with you. Of course it's relative. But for the first time, I'm seeing a feasible path towards all the things you mentioned you have (because I want those things too), while still working in the field I WANT to be in. The two aren't inherently mutually exclusive, is all I'm saying.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 08:42 AM) This is a complex argument when it comes to our economic system. On one hand, the fact we have a "minimum wage", which is merely an arbitrary number tied to nothing helps at the same time it doesn't help. If we want to establish a minimum wage, that minimum has to be tied to some sort of benchmark, or, what exactly is this a minimum of? As for our economic system, many people sure as hell can do something about it. Start by acquiring a skill or an education that matters to the world around you. If you want to love what you do, fine, but while you're at it, fall in love with being poor, because the number of people that followed their passion in order to do what they love that actually make a lot of money are quite rare. While I don't hate what I do, I don't "love" it either, there fare more things I'd rather be doing that I actually do love, and work isn't one of them. That said, what I do gives me the money/ability to do those other things quite often, so it's the middle ground trade off I'm willing to make in order to do something about the economic situation we find ourselves in. Not to throw a wrench in your plans here, but the reason I've been MIA this year? I'm making a lot of money doing what I love.

I'm blown away by a lot of the responses on here. The entire thing was orchestrated so that what has happened would happen. They damn near wanted riots - you have to figure - for the terrible way in which this whole thing was planned out. Of course they should've announced the decision in daylight hours. Of course they shouldn't have made all the big announcements about mobilizing the Nat'l Guard. The militarization of the police is what is being fought in the first place, so lets talk big and scary about how we're militarizing the situation, right!? Let's just further fan the flames. That makes sense. I'm sorry. Should people be rioting and looting? No, of course not. But do I understand the pain, fear, hatred, anger and hopelessness people feel in light of the mockery of justice they were given? Absolutely. I'm also not going to ignore that the people burning buildings are probably just burning buildings. There's truth to that. They don't care one way or another, it's just an opportunity to create free mayhem. I get that. And that's f***ed up. But in my mind, then the DA and the system shouldn't have rigged the outcome in the f***ing first place.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) Yeah, I was trying to guess in my mind what the Mike Stanton of 2027 would be getting as a free agent $40 million? $50 million? A-Rod's $25 mill deal was about 10 years ago right? Not a ton has changed since then -

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 11, 2014 -> 08:17 PM) Niese is not a 3 (neither is Noesi). More like a 4. Those are back end of the roster players. Pass. Lol. Why don't you have a little gander at Juan Lagares' WAR last season. He was the best center fielder in the league. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 11, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) Reddy is back!!! Briefly. My life on cruise ships doesn't allow for long internet dalliance. Have to pay for it on board. Ugh. In Houston flying to Cartagena, Colombia tomorrow and staying in Obama's Secret Service's favorite hotel for a couple days until I get on another ship. Life's not terrible currently. PS my road trip was amazing, but you were right about the filming of it. Created tensions that didn't need to be there. Still easily the coolest thing I've ever done. I'll tell y'all about it some day.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) I think Strange and bmags have sufficiently proven that they're some of the good white people I bought cookies from a couple guys trying to "raise money for their basketball team" today out of white guilt. There are SOME good white people.

Orioles, Royals, Nationals, Pirates - all day long. Don't care which of 'em wins it as long as two of those four are in the World Series.

I'm as huge a fan of Abreu as anyone and I'm glad as hell we got him, but just remember that Cespedes was a near-MVP-caliber player his rookie season, and he's taken a nosedive as the league adjusted. I think Abreu's better, but I've also been a White Sox fan for too long and I'm prepared to be disappointed THAT SAID - loving this ride.

I truly think it's hilarious that there are people on here freaking out about our performance this year. At what point did any of us think this was ANYTHING other than a rebuilding year where we'd be lucky to be at .500? How dare Robin lead a team that's playing exactly to expectations!?!?!

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) LMAO, you've got to be kidding me with this. People will find a reason to make a big deal out of it? It's a big deal in and of itself, pro athlete or not. But hey, let's put the onus on "the people" instead of the person putting stupid s*** on twitter. Glad it doesn't offend you, though. -

We've now raised over $6,250 - beating our goal of $5,000 quite handily, with two weeks left in our campaign. But that's not the real news. The real news is that we've bought the car we're going to be doing our now 5,500 mile trip in: A 1984 Subaru GL AWD Wagon with 106k miles - and it is PRISTINE. Engine turned over instantly, has only had one owner who kept fastidious records - thing is in better shape than the 10 year old cars we'd been looking at. The GL is considered one of the best off-road cars of all time, even by today's standard. You wanna fuse On the Road with 2014? Well this is the way to do it. Top Gear, eat your heart out.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 02:40 PM) Well, that tragedy is officially "old news." Let's hope there are no more, but this past one has certainly exited the news cycle. With the killer dead, there's nothing left to report on. Prayers for all the victims and their loved ones. And thus the easily terminated cycle continues.
