QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 30, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) Not really sure what else could have been done. I guess you could put the responsibility on his therapist to deem him too dangerous to own a gun, but maybe he/she never got an understanding of all of his psychotic manifesto stuff. That was an issue in the Colorado movie theater case too. The parents called the cops because of the videos and stuff he was saying, so are you going to place the responsibility on them? They called the cops, not sure what else they could do. Or do we blame the cops for not following up enough? If someone alleges you're crazy and a danger, is the allegation alone enough to warrant that you can't buy a gun? Shouldn't there be some kind of adjudication on that issue (hey, like the law requires?). And even then, we're talking about a very rare case where the crazy person has shown signs of being crazy. So again, absent an absolute ban, this s***'s not preventable. Crazy people do crazy things. At some point you have to stop regulating and infringing on the rights on the 99% of people that use/own/operate weapons legally and responsibly. Totally not preventable You guys realize how ludicrous you sound when you say that right?

QUOTE (Reddy @ May 30, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) You don't know that that's true. Maybe the rules were followed to a T and the regulations just aren't tight enough regarding mental health? Can you recite the mental health statutes involving gun ownership in CA? Thanks Balta.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2014 -> 12:26 AM) Not covering the murder/assailant will never happen because of the 1st Amendment... That's obvious. You could have an interesting debate, though about the cause and effect/correlation with "mass" killings around the world...if you were to break it down to which has the bigger impact, the media's incessant coverage of them (think John Hinckley's assassination attempt on Reagan to get noticed by Jodie Foster) or access to the weapons (be it knives, guns, chemical/biological, etc.) Here in China, there are no guns...so the most common "mass killing" is for Chinese men (often unemployed/uneducated or under-educated...frustrated they can't marry with 6 men for every 5 women, etc.) lashing out against schoolchildren by using knives to kill as many kids as quickly as possible. Or the Japanese subway attacks with chemical weapons, for example. Without guns...deranged people/groups/terrorists/cults will still carry out apocalyptic "days of retribution/annihilation/vengeance" regardless. they'll just kill fewer people.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 30, 2014 -> 12:06 AM) So then someone in the CA system screwed up by not flagging him enough to prevent him from getting a gun and passing a CA background check. It seems you already had the rules in place to stop him, if they were followed. You don't know that that's true. Maybe the rules were followed to a T and the regulations just aren't tight enough regarding mental health? Can you recite the mental health statutes involving gun ownership in CA?

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 29, 2014 -> 09:54 PM) The answer is to stop reelecting a congress that has a single digit approval rating, but even that's short sighted of what's necessary. Even our local governments approvals are often dismal only to get reelected countless times on broken promises. The people have the power to change things, but they repeatedly show they don't actually want change, they just want to talk about change. people don't have the power to change things when corporations = people.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 29, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) Hey Rachel Maddow/liberal talking head, give an example of a regulation that would have prevented this shooting. A REAL, viable option. stricter mental health requirements. he'd been in therapy since 8 years old and had recently quit going against his parents' wishes. red flag. simple as that.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 29, 2014 -> 09:08 PM) This isn't always true. You have to consider the laws as they are, not laws as you wish the would be. The second amendment will NOT be changed within our lifetime and that's that. If anything, it's gotten stronger the past decade, so a sudden weakening of it just isn't reality and there is no point in adding it to the discussion. the second amendment isn't even pertinent to the conversation tbh. it even f***ing says "well regulated"

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 29, 2014 -> 07:42 PM) It's not an out, it's accounting for a reality they don't have to deal with, which again, you want to ignore. Sorry, you can't just choose to ignore that massive cultural reality because it doesn't fit your narrow assed narrative. the cultural difference exists because of our lack of regulation. start regulating and the culture will change. slowly. but it'll change.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 29, 2014 -> 07:29 PM) Kind of the opposite of his point. At this juncture, stop talking, as you aren't even reading. you're the one who thinks percentages = total numbers

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 28, 2014 -> 06:06 PM) Because there is no solution. You can't fix crazy. One side of this issue needs to accept that. Australia and every other civilized country on the planet say hi. gmafb

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 25, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) He retired due to the back problems that derailed him mid-05. (i'm aware. I was making a point about effective closers)

QUOTE (SCCWS @ May 25, 2014 -> 01:04 PM) Joe Nathan got 9 Mil. Again you are saying reliever, I am saying closer. Hahn should move Beckham back to a 3rd baseman and then we can trade him for a closer in return based on your logic. Weird I thought closers WERE relief pitchers. Whatever happened to Dustin Hermanson?
-
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 25, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) I never thought too highly of Addison Reed. Davidson doesn't look too good right now either. I would rather have Peavey and Rios on this roster in place of Leury and Avi Garcia though. Avi got hurt. please.
-
QUOTE (SCCWS @ May 25, 2014 -> 11:58 AM) I think quality closers are a premiun and you don't trade one for a good prospect. Let's see how fast Davidson becomes an impact player and how fast we get a quality closer. How long was Eric Gagne a quality closer? Heath Bell? Bobby Jenks? Outside of Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman and Dennis Eckersley, can you name me a closer who's been worth the money he got paid? BJ Ryan. Need I say more? Why don't you tell me about our 2005 bullpen. Those guys must have had extremely long, fulfilling, careers given the types of numbers they put up that year. Oh... oh wait... pretty much all of them disappeared immediately following '05 except for Jenks and Marte. Bullpens are fickle. Relief pitchers even more so. Paying top dollar for a reliever is asinine. If you can trade a reliever for a 3B, you do it every. Single. Time.
-
QUOTE (SCCWS @ May 25, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) No and I still don't. But Relief pitchers are damned hard to find. Worse, sometimes you find one and they don't last long ( Bobby Jenks). An established reliever( Reed was top 10) is worth more, in my opinion, than a good prospect( Davidson). Even if you are rebuilding, Reed was young enough to last through it. I had no problem with Santiago for Eaton, whether it works or not, because CF is a primary position and look how long we have been trying to find one. I posted at the time of Reed trade that I hoped they had a long term plan to replace him. Maybe Webb( or Jones) will makeup for the loss of Reed by late summer. I just hope we don't start 2015 with the same problem. everything in this post regarding relief pitchers is completely, 100% backwards.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 24, 2014 -> 11:16 PM) So you're saying we shouldn't care because society has become completely anesthetized by the ubiquitous nature of these types of events? If anything, that only causes the perpetrators to be more creative and vicious in their attempts to break out of the random noise and grab the headlines, like the suburban Denver movie theatre killer. You misinterpreted my post. Sarcasm. Of course we should care but we don't. Real life had desensitized us far better than any game or movie could. The NRA has won.

four posts. this stuff's old hat. no one cares. move along. sigh.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 22, 2014 -> 10:56 AM) Seems he's stayed anywhere from 3-7 days in each new location. Gotta say, I do respect the hell out of you. I do not have the cojones to do this. sure ya do.

Big day for us at Just GoClearly someone does believe in us! We got a massive donation from a 65 year old medical marijuana tycoon from Montana that put us over our total fundraising goal with 25 days left in our campaign. Just unbelievable. We've also just hit our 500th follower on twitter, and we're now able to do things we never dreamed of. Production values are about to skyrocket, and we're not stopping there. NOW we're focusing on raising the level of the graphics and post-production, as well as raising money for distribution. It's all well and good to make a film for me and my friends, but it's another thing to make a film to reach the masses, and that's now our priority on the fundraising front. Film festivals across the country, Netflix, Hulu - they're all in our sights. This thing is taking off. If you haven't checked out our stuff, consider doing so!

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 21, 2014 -> 11:59 AM) I know a guy who took a year long trip on bike all the way down to the very southernmost tip of North America. The coolest thing about it? I've been able to follow him along his journey on Facebook. It's interesting living vicariously through him as he makes this journey. Last I checked though, I believe he is about done and ready to head back north. Southern most tip of North America? When'd he start and where from? In a year I'd imagine you could get to the tip of South America! Very cool though.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 21, 2014 -> 11:20 AM) That's a LOONNNNNNG time from now, and while I'll surely look forward to that, right now I'm looking forward to what I have now. I'm in no hurry to get old and watch my kids move away. Oh totally - wasn't suggesting that then will be any better than now, just different, and you'll have more time to have more adventures. But I'm all about loving the now.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 21, 2014 -> 10:37 AM) The days where I can go off with just friends are behind me, and beyond that, the carefree attitude I once had is gone. It's all about my family/kids now, and on the rare occasion I go anywhere without them, it's a 2-3 day trip, not a the 20 day road trips of my past. Totally - but 2-3 days is still something. And I bet you'll have a bit of a resurgence once the kids leave the nest. My parents have started traveling like crazy these days. Just never say never.
