  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2017 -> 12:49 AM) Why did my uncle give his kids chunks of money 30000 at a time to avoid some kind of inheritance tax when he died. He didn't have an estate worth 5.5 mill? There was an understaning if he lived a long time they'd give it back and take care of him, etc. Most likely to avoid having to pay for medical expenses. Medicaid has a 5 year look back period. If you get your assets under the threshold 5 years prior, then you get medicaid and dont have to pay medical bills. Without knowing the exact situation its just speculation, but that is my guess. Im guessing that your uncle and his wife, were giving $28k per year (max amount without having to pay gift tax.) There are some other possibilities as well (wanting to avoid probate etc), but Id guess it was to qualify for medicaid.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 1, 2017 -> 10:31 PM) I can't believe a successful person such as yourself doesn't understand why he might consider it a bad idea to attend a supposed jovial affair on a weekend with people OUT TO GET HIM? It's not like this event is something important. As far as I know, Trump being there or not being there didn't cost the charity a dime. It was sold out anyway. So let's put this on you. Let's say you are an attorney (I don't know what you do). Let's say you normally attend the Chicago Avaiation Banquet every year. Let's say you've won 3 lawsuits in a row vs the Aviation Commission and you've been told you are despised and several of the people are going to find you and rip into you verbally at this year's banquet. Would you attend? I doubt it, unless you wanted to brag in their faces about the cases you won. Otherwise ... who needs it? No harm in not attending. Why would he EVER wanna break bread with the press 100 days in. Next year? We'll see. Because hes the President of the United States and you dont cower because you think the press is unfair. For most people in the world life isnt fair everyday and Im not talking about being "bullied" by the press. People have s***ty jobs, s***ty bosses, no job, kids who are sick, etc. And yet every day they have to show up, because thats the reality of life. They dont get to run and hide. So you know what the President of the US is supposed to do? Walk right into a place where people want to destroy him and stand up for himself. Make a few jokes, take a few shots, show the world what makes us Americans. People that hate him are still likely going to hate him, people that love him will still probably love him. But at least people will respect that he showed up. /shrugs Thats just me though, and instead of the Aviation comparison, lets use the current one. If I was President and the press hated me, despised me, Id show up. Because Id charm the hell out of everyone and use it as an opportunity to slam it down their throats that I was going to beat them at their own game. But again, thats just me.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 1, 2017 -> 07:48 PM) Very little is more important in a democracy than a free press with reasonable access to it's leaders. No matter how good or bad they are at their jobs, they play a crucial role. Trump doesn't want that - and that is dictatorship 101. You have fallen hook, line and sinker for Trump's game. He's made the press into an enemy, as if they were some terrorist-infested nation. It's an absurd notion, but apparently people like you have no notion of what he's doing and fell right for it. Forget his policy points. Look at what it means that he's turned the press into an enemy. Not on the occasional issue, or one particular outlet, but the whole swath nearly all the time. Just take 1 minute and think about the road that goes down. Let me tell you about Da President, I was watching tv the other day and saw a graphic that he is the most successful President in the history of the United States. Now this isnt me saying, but its what I saw was that if Trump was President there wouldnt have been a Civil War. I heard that he could have easily negotiated something that would work for both sides, slaves would be given a choice, they could be deported for being illegal immigrants or they could remain slaves. They said that they had no idea why the North was upset, they couldnt understand why a bunch of white guys were pushing for better rights for foreigners. Again its just what I saw, but I saw that slaves were taking the good industry jobs of the white people and that Trump could have easily gotten those jobs back. Now another thing, is that Kim Il Jong is a smart cookie. Really really smart guy, and Trump knows smart guys. He has basically said every person in the United States government is dumb, but Kim Il Jung, that guy is one of the smartest guys Trump has ever met. Because Im not sure if your aware, and I just saw this on tv so its not my opinion, but Trump has had way harder jobs than President. So the problem is Trump is just bored because the job is so easy and hes so successful, that is why he goes to Mara-a-Lago every weekend, because hes just really bored and has basically solved every problem. But unfortunately we have the lying press and the Democrats. If they were just honest they would tell the truth, they both hate America, hate Americans and hate Donald Trump because he is the most successful President ever. Well maybe besides for Andrew Jackson. Now again, I saw this on tv, but I heard he was the second best President besides Trump. They told me about this thing called the "Indian Removal Act" where they got rid of all the illegal immigrants. Anyway, why would Trump show up to somewhere that people may challenge his views? He is obviously right, he has done more for this country than any person that has ever lived. Without Trump America would be a lawless wasteland filled with illegal immigrants and criminals. The only reason we even have the internet or our homes right now is because Donald Trump personally saved us from all the horrible horrible deals that other President's agreed to. Donald Trump is divine, he is the mouthpiece of god. And anyone who dares to question any single word he says deserves to be killed for heresy because that is the will of god. But again this isnt what Im saying, its what I saw on tv.
  4. QUOTE (shipps @ May 1, 2017 -> 04:06 PM) I guess my timeline is all out of sorts. I thought most of that was completed before they signed Glennon. His pro-day was on March 21, so about 2 weeks after the Glennon signing. So it is possible. It still is odd because most of the time pro-days, interviews, etc are just to solidify what you saw on the tape. Or its just the most super secretive plan ever, which is why Trubisky was surprised. It is entirely possible Pace was so in love with Trubisky that he did everything in his power to make it seem like the Bears had no interest in Trubisky. All of the reports on Glennon were that he could be cut after 1 year...
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 1, 2017 -> 03:01 PM) The Bears knew what they could get for the #3 pick, so they should have had some idea what it would cost for #2. Unless you really think Ryan Pace is a total idiot, he had more information than anyone on this, and he paid what he had to pay to secure Trubisky. I absolutely think Pace had more information than I do, which is why I said: "If people were offering fair value for the Bears pick, I would have traded down and taken the 2 1sts, 2 2nds, plus." Thats just personal opinion though. After reading Ptatc's comment above, I think the deal more had to do with what time Pace thought he had left. If he thinks he has at most a 2 year leash, he cant stockpile picks for next year because hell be gone by the time they produce.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2017 -> 02:25 PM) This. Absolutely 100% true. The one thing in the back of my head is the Bears being at #3 had to have heard from almost all of the same teams at 3, as SF did at 2. Maybe it was those calls that convinced the Bears that someone really wanted the QB. I can't imagine they would just make it up out of no where. Well I think we can definitely assume that KC and Houston were trying to trade up. (Well just use a random chart as reference) http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/draft...ft-trade-chart/ KC's offer was worth 680 (27) + 136 (91) + next years first (this is not on the chart but lets presume its worth the least amount which is 590= 1,406 (Chart values 10 as 1,300 so its close.) The 49ers pick is worth approximately 2,600. In order for KC to move up that far, theyd have had to throw in the equivalent of almost 2 more 1st rounders. Which is why many wanted the Bears to use the 3 to move down. IE If KC wanted to move up you were looking at something like Bears #3 (2,200) for KC 1st (680), 2nd this year (310) and 1st (590), 2nd (270) next year is only 1,850 so theyd likely have gotten an additional 3rd in the next year plus. As someone who almost always proposes trading down, its hard to pass up 2 1sts, 2 2nds plus when you are a team that is likely to be terrible. Again no way to know if anyone was offering anything close, but if they werent then Bears were bidding against themselves, if they were then Bears could have gotten a huge haul to move down.
  7. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ May 1, 2017 -> 01:36 PM) And guys like Mike Lombardi have asked around and can't find anyone that made those calls. So someone is lying somewhere. No one is lying but I think its 2 different scenarios going on: http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2017/05/01/san-fra...ster-peter-king I would say that there were offers for 2, but those offers were if Garrett was there, once Garrett wasnt there, it was only the Bears and thus: If those quotes are accurate (imo) you can tell that the 49ers dont have another offer. It just seems like fishing to get a little bit more. IE My client is offering $10k, they are offering $11k and I say "Any chance you can do $10,500". At that point I am almost certainly going to take the $11k deal if they say no, but its worth it just to see if I can squeeze that little bit.
  8. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ May 1, 2017 -> 12:50 PM) There were 70ish trades in this draft. The vast majority were spontaneous. There is plenty of time to get a deal done. It was moronic for Pace to tell Lynch that he'd be willing to offer "at least" two 3rd round picks before the draft started. If that's the way Pace wanted to go, you call up Lynch in the moment and ask him what it would take. All Pace accomplished was letting Lynch know he could drive up the price because he knew how much Pace wanted to trade up. You mean that if I called you and said that: "Ill settle this case for at least $50k" you are going to counter with something more than $50k? Now that there has been some time to actually think about what happened, I think the most concerning parts are as follows: 1) It does not seem that the Bears have a real plan. If Trubisky was the guy, he was the guy before they signed Glennon. Having Glennon and Trubisky on the roster doesnt really create a good "heir apparent situation". 2) Fox/Pace dont seem to be on the same page. If you are planning to pick a QB to hitch your wagon to, you really want a situation where GM, HC, OC, QB coach are all on the same page before the draft. From what Ive seen, it appears Fox had no idea, so my guess is neither did the OC or the QB Coach. These are the guys you want input from, because they are the ones who will have to train Trubisky. 3) A lot of high risk/reward picks. Had the Bears traded down accumulated picks, high risk guys are great. But when you dont, then you potentially get really thin really fast if those guys dont pan out.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:52 AM) It all depends on who/what you believe. Rapaport was just on the Score and said there was absolutely another team pushing the 49ers for their pick, King says the Bears got played. According to the value chart, the Bears didnt overpay, and it was on par with what the Eagles gave up for Wentz(who threw 9 more college passes than Trubisky), but some people think the value chart is more of a guide and not really a bible. Everyone has said it, Trubisky is Pace's horse, we just have to see if he was worth it. Not sure where you got the Wentz stat, but Wentz threw 612 passes (over 4 seasons). Trubisky threw 572 (over 3 seasons). http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/player...on-wentz-1.html http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/player...trubisky-1.html 40 passes isnt really a big deal, but the knock about Trubisky is that he only started 1 season so that there was not a lot of game tape and you couldnt really see how teams would have adjusted the next year. The ACC seemed to also have higher pass stats than other leagues last year, 8 Qbs had over 60% completion, 5 over 3500 yards. http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/confer...16-leaders.html No one can really predict how any of it translates, but in all my years of following NFL draft, I feel like the Bears draft is at the top end of getting universally knocked. Now again, doesnt mean anything, but its just a combination of a lot of things that make me worry about where the Bears are going, because (in my opinion) Trubisky is likely going to have a different coach/front office within the next 3 years.
  10. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:07 AM) Blame the Bears for winning that meaningless game last year against the 49ers. Yeah but the Bears also lost like every other close game, so the Bears actually could have had a few more wins. I guess we should just be thankful the Bears werent like 6-10 and then traded next years first.
  11. Can't believe Beigle went so high, was going to mention him ad a maybe in the 4th but someone I hoped the bears took in 5th. Not as much of a physical specimen as tj watt but arguably more productive and just had a way of making an impact. Rb is puzzling it's not just Howard, it's 3 straight years of rbs. They still have langford and there are always vet rbs to take snaps who come cheap.
  12. Sucks that the injury was on a hustle play, you always hope those type of guys get rewarded.
  13. QUOTE (Tony @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 07:34 PM) If you went all in on Mitch, and clearly Pace did, it's only smart to put the best pieces around him. The only problem I have with the pick is your adding a raw TE with an inexperienced QB. That being said, the Bears may as well go 0-16 next year and then get 2 1sts + 2nds + from whoever wants Darnold. I personally think Pace is being too cute with these picks, but at least this TE has a lot of people excited about his upside. The problem is that hes like either going to be really good or completely overwhelmed. Just no way to tell.
  14. So some reports say Shaheen is "baby gronk." It seems the Bears are punting next year because its another player who is supposedly pretty raw with high upside.
  15. From Brad Biggs: are drafting TE Adam Shaheen with 45th overall pick in Round 2. He's a Division II player from Ashland. Dont know anything about him.
  16. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 06:35 PM) Wow Arizona drafted Baker Besides for size hed have been higher, thought he may be there at Bears 45 pick. Lamp/Wilson/Jones still around. Could even see Bears go Tim Williams.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 06:32 PM) 4th and 6th and a 4th next year They got the Cards 2nd too. So its a pretty big haul for a few spots.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 06:30 PM) Cards probably taking Kizer. I wonder what we got. From twitter (Brad Biggs) No. 36 and 7th rounder (No. 221) to #Cardinals for No. 45, 4th rd pick (No. 119), 6th rd pick (No. 197) and 2018 4th rounder. So id bet its Kizer and maybe Bears get Budda.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 06:27 PM) Looks like the Bears made a trade with Arizona. Cards trade up for Kizer maybe?
  20. Robinson gone, think now the Bears can trade down and really not be too upset.
  21. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 06:08 PM) Odds the Bears trade down? Has to be high. If not, I assume they take a DB. I dont know a lot of good talent here so hard to pass. Cam Robinson/Sidney Jones would look good. Budda Baker is also interesting but undersized. If the Bears could move mid 2nd and grab some other picks that may be ideal, but otherwise no issues if they get a good lineman or db.
  22. QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 04:20 PM) So you give me some source called walterfootball who mentions that he thinks Trubisky has more of a second round skill set and in the same post you try to tell me you think Peterman has the possibility as the best QB in the draft by which that same walterfootball said could potentially be a developmental backup. Jesus we just arent going to agree soxbadger. Its cool. I know we arent going to agree, its just that I am going based on my personal opinion after watching these players play. I think Trubisky is a complete wildcard, he could easily be worth #2 or he could completely flame out. As a Bears fan, I dont think the pick makes a ton of sense. They just signed Glennon, who probably isnt a HOF or Pro Bowler, and then they go out and pick a QB #2. It just doesnt seem to make sense. What made (imo) more sense, was you sign Glennon, you see what he can do as a starter. You pick BPA or trade down to get more picks. You take a QB in the middle rounds, because the risk is lower and there is plenty of history of guys after the 1st turning into serviceable QBs. After 2017 you then see where you are, if Glennon sucks, you probably have a top 10 pick in a draft with some interesting QBs (Darnold, Allen, Ross). At the end of the day, its just opinion. Its fun to look back at these discussions years later and see what happened. SS2k, No one is saying that QBs dont get overdrafted. When Tebow was drafted it was crazy, but that was also a really thin QB class. Top pick was Bradford coming off of an injury where he only played 3 games.
  23. QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 04:00 PM) Where have you seen that? Nowhere have I seen him graded as a second. And you want them to waste the oh so valuable 2-3nd rd pick on Peterman as a throw away (just to show that you are trying to draft a QB at least) because he certainly isnt rated higher than Trubisky just to put off getting "THE GUY" next year possibly? http://walterfootball.com/draft2017QB.php Trubisky has more of a second-round-caliber skill set, but what teams love about him his accuracy in the short to intermediate part of the field. They also feel he was the most consistent quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft. Some teams have had second-day grades on many quarterbacks who ended up going as top-32 picks. Sources from three different teams told me they graded Trubisky in Round 2, but other teams have him graded as a first-rounder. One playoff general manager told WalterFootball.com that they rate Trubisky the highest because he has the tools to play with accuracy and athleticism. Read more at http://walterfootball.com/draft2017QB.php#...TydP3fVvHkdk.99 I can find more if you like. And the reason why Peterman makes more sense is because in football it is all about depth and most assets possible. I like Peterman, to me you can get him for a cheap price and there is a possibility he is the best QB in the draft. That is the type of value Russel Wilson presented years ago or Dak Prescott last year. Not saying that every guy like that pans out, but not every 1st round pick does either. In fact right now, a bunch of HOF Qbs werent picked top 5, Brady, Brees were both outside of 1st round and Rodgers was back half of the first. Sure you get guys like Manning, Luck, etc, but those guys had years of tape to go over. Trubisky has 1 season, did not play in a pro-offense and played almost no snaps under center. I mean best hope is Cam Newton comparison, but he isnt nearly as physical. Again this is all just my personal opinion based on what Ive seen. Sometimes Im right, sometimes Im wrong.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) I'm not saying "Qbs get drafted in the first round" I'm saying first round graded qbs get drafted in the first round. If there are 10 1st round graded offensive lineman, I would say that it is likely 3-4 drop to the 2nd. But QBs are different. They don't fall out of the first just because they are in a deep class. Teams have a way of making room for them. I dont think hed have had a first round grade if he was in another class. I think his grade is based on scarcity and the idea that the top QBs get boosted grades. With this class being really weak at QB, all of the QBs got boosted grades because no matter what some team is going to pick a QB. That being said, many places had him graded as a 2nd round pick. I think (in this class) he should have gone mid first. But as a Bears fan, Id rather have had them go a different direction, pick Peterman from Pitt and then maybe get a shot at a QB in next years class. But thats just my opinion.
