Official 2010 World Cup Thread
Soxbadger replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Okay to end this argument, here are the FIFA rules (from FIFA) The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows: a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches; B) goal difference in all group matches; c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches. 48 FINAL COMPETITION If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows: d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned; e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned; f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned; g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee. http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament...010inhalt_e.pdf Playoff is only allowed in the case of a tie prior to the World Cup. -

I was just following the rules as posted by Chisoxfn, which clearly stated a playoff could occur. I would also guess that FIFA will not want the US being eliminated for the benefit of Slovenia, after the controversial way Slovenia won the match. The US can make all of these contingencies irrelevant by taking out Algeria by 2. -

Of course, I was just saying that there is a possible crazy scenario due to the fact that Slovenia and US tied, which takes out almost half of the tie breakers. -

Right which is why I qualified my statement with: If you see the US and Slovenia tie for points. -

So right now Slovenia has 3 goals, US has 3 goals. If the US and Slovenia tie for points you are going to see the unheard of playoff. -

Here is why winning by 2 automatically qualifies the US. Right now Slovenia has +1 goal differential. US has 2 points, Slovenia has 4 points. If England wins both games, they have 7 points. Slovenia 4 points, all the US would need to do is win and they are through with 5 points. If England ties both games, they have 4 points, Slovenia 5 points, all the US would need to do is win and they are through with 5 points. If England beats Algeria, and ties Slovenia, Slovenia has 5 points, England has 5 points. If the US wins, they would have 5 points. As Slovenia will have to tie that game, they are stuck at +1 in this scenario. Therefore if the US wins by 2, they are guaranteed a spot. Hence if you win by 2 in the next game you are in no matter what circumstance happens. -

haha Nigeria was in my mind because I saw them play yesterday. The point remains! As long as the US wins by 2 against Algeria, they are in. No set of circumstances could keep them out. -

Horrible call, but have to focus on the next game. Basically if they win against Algeria by 2, they should be in the next round no matter what other circumstances happen. I guess you want Algeria to beat England, which would then force England to have to beat Slovenia, and give the US an automatic berth if they beat Algeria. (Edited for you bastards) -

Barring a miraculous comeback, this will have to be considered one of the biggest debacles of US soccer. -

Well here is the quote from the Arkansas AD: http://blogs.nwaonline.com/slophouse/2010/...ted-to-the-sec/ Outside of the University of Texas, I havent seen anyone buy into this rumor. Chip Brown is a rumormonger, Ive been reading is website consistently since this whole story broke. He has changed the story so many times its ridiculous. To put things in perspective, his first breaking story was that Missouri to the Big 10 was a lock. (edit) here is the article that generated the rumor: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2010/jun/16/...nsas-come-down/ That means some one, who may know Jerry Jones believes that Jones is thinking about something like this. Its so speculative. All of these sites are trying to generate press like Orangebloods and get their name in the news. Its turning out most of them dont have many facts or sources. -
Id never trade Hossa. The only way you trade him is if you dont believe youll make the playoffs.

From what Ive read the entire Arkansas/ND things were created rumors. There may have been something with Jerry Jones saying he wants Arkansas in the Big 12, but im pretty sure the Arkansas AD came out and said they are happy with the SEC. ND to the Big 12 would be hilarious though. I can just see them trading in their game against Michigan for a game against Kansas. Cause you have to believe that if ND spit in the Big 10's face, the teams wouldnt schedule them for a while. -

Yeah can we petition to play the NL more? -
The plague origins could be a myth. http://www.snopes.com/language/literary/rosie.asp Its not conclusive, and I was told the same thing about the plague reference., it just never seemed to make sense to me.

First match is generally tentative. You absolutely do not want to lose and unless your playing the worst team in your group you never mind a draw. Now some teams need to win, which is going to change how the games are played. -
The problem Obama faced is that he is called a "communist", "socialist", etc. Im not an expert on the Oil Pollution Act, but I think it requires the party responsible to pay for clean up costs. At the end of the day to many politicians (on both sides) let politics get in the way of doing the right thing. If Obama had come in guns blazing, do you think Republican pundits would be saying "Good work" or "Another example of Obama expanding the govt." Its a problem with our political society.
-
Which is fine. Its just for the last X years, people having been blaming Walker for the White Sox hitting approach, claiming (without proof) that he teaches players to lift and pull. I dont care about whether hes fired or not, a good case can be made either way. I just think people should know the truth.
-
Imo Obama was damned if he did, damned if he didnt. He uses the US govt, spends tax payers money, people are complaining that he spent their tax dollars on BP's mess. He lets BP clean it up, it doesnt get done quickly, people complain. I just hope they figure out a solution, instead of worrying who to blame.
-
Yep Walker is running a disinformation campaign and really is teaching all of the players to only pull the ball. You can dislike the guy, but it gets tiring to hear the same unproven stuff over and over again.
-
That may be true (walker should be out of a job), but it should not be for the internet myth that he teaches "lift and pull".

I WON THE CUP Oh and I think Steve and I should also get co-credits for the Rally Beard. Hawks always win the Stanley Cup when the rally beard is involved. -
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,1976020.story Mainly a fluff piece, the most interesting part was. I think we can now kill the internet myth that Greg Walker teaches "lift and pull".
