2018-2019 Official NBA thread
Soxbadger replied to southsider2k5's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Where did I say playing Payne was a fireable offense? I said that its a poor indication on a coaching staff to have a player go from starting to 0 minutes a game. It shows that they dont really know the talent level. Not all shots are equal. Holiday shooting nonsense 3s 2 seconds into a possession is a bad shot. Jacking up contested 3s at the expense of getting the ball to someone else, is a bad shot. If jacking up 3s all the time is such a great strategy, then why is Holiday the only player shooting over 70% of his shots from 3? Why is a much better shooter, Curry shooting less than 50% of his shots from 3? You can continue to defend Hoiberg, but youre argument that he shouldnt have to adjust his system to fit his players, is just absurd. The guy has done nothing at any level to suggest his system is so worthwhile that the world should change for him. (edit) And if youre so right about Hoiberg's brilliance, than I expect Hoiberg to be a hot name for a HC job in the NBA. But Ill bet Hoiberg goes back to NCAA and does not get a NBA HC offer. -

Its absolutely a function of Hoiberg. Hoiberg is the coach. Just because Holiday is the starting "3" doesnt entitle him to more shots per game than Carter. Just because Blakeney is a back up 2, doesnt entitle him to more shots than a starter. In the last 3 games, Blakeney hasnt palyed more than 5 minutes in any game. The Bulls havent added a guard, so why was Blakeney "hogging" the ball ever a requirement? The answer is, it wasnt. Yesterday Holiday actually shot more 2s (a little below 50%), before that he was at an insane clip of shooting over 70% of his shots from 3. As I pointed out yesterday, he has shot the 7th most 3s of any player in the league. He has shot 120 more 3s, than 2s. No one else comes even close to that disparity. So I completely disagree that somehow Hoiberg was forced to allow that to happen. Because he simply wasnt. At any time he could have changed the offense to fit the players. -

Outside of Lauri, I dont really see why its good for the Bulls development to be jacking up 3s 2 seconds into the offense in an attempt to score 120 points. If it was just losing, that would be fine. The problem is that if Hoiberg's coaching/style was stunting the future cores growth, then he needed to go. At some point there has to be an intervention when Blakeny and Holiday are shooting 20 shots a game at the cost of Carter/Lavine etc. My guess is that the Bulls decided they needed a coach with a much deeper background to be the guy with all these younger players. -

I dont know what to think about Holiday. I think he could actually be a decent player. The problem is he seems to think his role is to just threes no matter what is going on in the game. That may be fine when he is shooting 40%, but the problem is he goes stretches where he shoots closer to 30%. The volume of his 3s has increased exponentially too. When he started in the league he was shooting 2 per game. Now that he is on the Bulls he went from 6 per game last year to almost 8 per game this year. In terms of overall volume, he is top 7 in total 3 point attempts. But of those top 10, he has almost half as many 2pt shots as threes, which is by far the lowest. He has over 100 more 3s than 2s, which is a pretty big anomaly. It seems like he has just been given a green light to shoot 3s at any time, but the question is that really in the Bulls best interest overall? Personally I think no. When Holiday starts jacking threes, the offensive flow dies. Lavine then seems to start jacking 3s. Carter doesnt get touches etc. So what is the purpose of letting Holiday go crazy every night? I mean at some point when he is having a 1-8 night, there has to be an end. Portis is a guy without a space. Unless he is going to be relatively cheap, its hard to suggest spending a bunch to make him a backup to Carter or Lauri. And I cant see any of the 3 of them playing SF. -

Parker can pass the ball. It may not be his first instinct, and maybe sometimes he makes some bad passes, but he definitely passes the ball way more than Holiday and Blakeney. But again, the job of the coach is to make the players play their role. Besides for Parker/Lavine/Carter, every other guy on the Bulls (prior to Lauri returning) should be subject to immediate benching if they arent playing the game properly. Blakeney takes a shitty shot instead of dumping it back to Carter, grab some bench. Put in Harrison, put in the other jobbers on the team until you can find a group who actually play the game the way you want it to be played. Replacing Payne should have been done way earlier. And the fact that he then gave Payne 0 minutes right after, showed he had almost no idea what was going on with the talent on the Bulls. You keep saying bottom 3 team? So what. A bottom 3 team can play basketball the right way. Just because your team is low on talent doesnt mean you give the green light for a bunch of guys to get bad habits and create a bigger shit show. Being a bottom team should have given Hoiberg the freedom to show what he had as a coach. I dont know if Hoiberg is a bad coach or a mediocre coach, I just know that hes not a good coach (right now). Besides for him being a nice guy, I saw nothing that made me want to keep him any longer. I would have fired him much earlier in the season, but I thought the Bulls were purposefully losing. So Im not sure why its not a good idea to see what someone else can do. At least Boylen has coached under great coaches. -

I like Hoiberg as a person. I think he seems like a respectable nice guy. I never have seen him do anything wrong as a human. But watching this season, it was going no where fast. Even small things like substitution patterns were horrific. I felt that almost every game he did something detrimental to the Bulls winning. And I cant one time remember going "oh wow clever." He never even tried new things. Like why not try Carter and Lopez at the same time? Why not do other things. Your team is a shit show, isnt now the time to get creative? -

I dont think I ever saw Hoiberg have control for the entire season. The Bulls were 5-19. 3rd to last in points scored. He was getting 5 mil per year (which is just outside of top 10.) I saw nothing this year that gave me any confidence in him as a coach. Even the most basic thing like "get Carter more shots" seems to have not been a priority. Im not saying its Hoiberg's fault. He probably wasnt ready to be a NBA coach, or at minimum wasnt ready to take on a job that was going to be difficult. But I never thought "Ok Hoiberg is going to figure something out to give this team a better chance to win tonight." -

A guy like Blakeney needs to be controlled. If he doesnt follow what the coach says, he sits on the bench until he learns his role again. Hoiberg just didnt seem to have that control as a coach. I think it was odd for a guy like Carter who played for Coach K. -

I think they they are worried about increasing the amount of games. That would be adding 2 more games for the final 4 teams, and those games are going to be during NFL playoffs (unless you do them Friday/Monday.) And there is no way that anyone is going to give up 1 or 2 pushovers to start the season. -

Well Im scared whenever Stephen A Smith agrees with me. Another problem that bothered me with Hoiberg was that he never really seemed to get at the refs to protect his players. Carter has been the refs whipping boy for a lot of games, and I dont think Hoiberg ever once got technical for it. Stacey King was more upset. (edit) Itll be interesting to see what Boylen does. He has coached with some famous coaches. -

Maybe they thought Hoiberg was a good enough coach that he would be able to modify his system to work with the players on his team. I dont care what his system was, he simply couldnt get control of the team. -

Part of being a good coach is that you coach to what talent you have. Its great that Hoiberg likes pace, moving the ball and three pointers. But if you dont have the players for "your" style, you dont just continue to run it. You actually look at the talent you have and you start running plays/systems to take advantage of their skill set. Hoiberg isnt some HOF coach who the rest of the world needs to revolve around. Hoiberg was a nice guy and maybe on an ultra talented team would be a great coach. But he isnt the coach for the Bulls right now, and it was painfully evident. -

Its not about wins or losses, its about how the team is playing. When you watch the Bulls its horrific. There is 0 accountability on the offense or defensive end. On the defensive end, I dont even know what the scheme is besides for running frantically at every player who has the ball, until the other team gets a wide open look. The timing isnt that bad. My guess is that the Lauri game was the final straw. You had bench warmers refusing to get your best player involved. When you watch the Bulls you see times when Blakeney shoots like every possession and doesnt even try and get Carter involved. That type of shit cant be tolerated if you really want these guys to improve and develop. This was the first year in a long time Ive watched the Bulls (Ive actually seen every minute sadly) and I just couldnt understand Hoiberg at all. Im fine if your tanking and losing on purpose, but at minimum you have to be helping to develop your young players. One of the biggest concerns happened early in the season with Cam Payne. He was starting and playing like 20+ minutes every game. Then all of a sudden Arci starts playing (who has been a great surprise) and Cam doest even get a minute. How can someone go from a starter to 0 minutes, unless you clearly just have no clue about the talent level of the guys. Hoiberg had his chance this year, they were beyond patient. -
Im wondering where this NAFTA thing is going. Im not really sure a President can unilaterally undo an act if Congress.

I went with the S, I just dont really play that much anymore so its hard to justify that price tag for something I likely wont use. I havent even opened it, and I already bought 4 games lol. No one knows the deal with FF. The rumor is now that Kingdom Hearts is done it should be next up. My guess is that they may save it for the last big release on the PS4.

Yeah which is why I wouldnt think it relates to Trump. But I think that there may be something about him using his office to improperly get property tax benefits for Trump tower. To be fair, the idea that he even is allowed to do tax appeals in the first place seems crazy.
-
If youd have given me a hundred guesses, I doubt Id said this had to do with Trump. The fact that almost every newspaper is mentioning it makes me believe that they have been tipped off a little as to the nature of the raid. Whatever is happening there must be some really good evidence, because Burke is about as protected as you can be.

I got the nest, who knows if the ecobee would have been better. Nest works fine, I have 2 separate heating/cooling systems, so I can control both of them from my phone. I can look and see when the heater/ac was on during the day, I can preset temperatures. Its likely saving me money because when Im sleeping or away it drops the temp in the house. From a laziness perspective its nice that you never have to get up to change the temperature. If you need more than 1 and you have comed, try and buy directly from them. Google would only give 1 $100 rebate, where as comed will give you 2 $100 rebates if you buy 2. So basically saved $100 buying from comed.
