As stated previously went up to Madison last weekend and was able to get tickets to the Iowa-Wisconsin game. It was a great night for football and the stadium was packed. I was in a section with a bunch of Iowa fans, most were fun, some were lame. Wisconsin really needs to look at that tape and see that Donovan has problems reading defenses. On multiple occasions Jefferson (14) was open and Donovan would just be staring down Swann. One play was really bad where PJ Hill was open in the flat with no Iowa defenders on that side of the field and he just went into triple coverage to Swan. Iowa defense played well, its a real loss that Lance Smith cant play away games because that guy looks to be Wisconsin's next Calhoun style runner. -

Well im hopefully going to be at the Wisconsin beating of Iowa. From what ive been told Iowa doesnt play spread right? -
Redeye has a certain japanese green teletubby in it. Lets just say hilarity, and id allow him to pitch in that instead of his red sox uniform.

I guess Id rather have watched Frank Thomas live. I luckily got to see both in my life time, but Id rather watch guys like Buehrle, Thomas, McDowell, etc. At the end of the day, its my team first, everything else second. Ive seen guys like Bonds, Clemens, Griffey, etc etc, but I got to see them all watching my favorite team as well.

Finally got a chance to see the match last night, US actually didnt look that horrific. They still need to get better around the penalty area and put up better chances, but over all they actually played at Brazil's level for most of the match. Robinho looked smooth, he got burned one time by Bradley but then baited him later in the match, the yellow card was pretty harsh, I thought the guy may have got his foot.

New England Patriots...cheaters?
Soxbadger replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I wonder if all the people who get upset about bonds "cheating" will no longer respect Belicheck. -
I play with the Bears in franchise, im just worried about online having a really horrible offense. I picked up a loss on a disconnect (power surge before the kick off), so im 2-1 and have only given up 1 TD (a pick off returned for 90+ yards). My defense has been good, my offense not so much.
-
Played my first game online, against who I can only assume to be Tedd Ginn Jr. The guy was 6 levels above me and had won a lot, but he only ran 2 offensive plays basicaly the whole game?? Is this how people usually play? Also he only passed... I on the other hand played with the Eagles and Freakbrook, ran for 142 and won 29-3 (he quit at 27-3 when it was 4-41 on his own 1 with like 2:41 to go). Online is strange to me, also I think my wireless was lagging a little cause I couldnt kick at all, and usually im golden.

Nah I dont think its harsh, its just great we all love Rowand, hes not a Sox player anymore, and hasnt been for 2 years. Its like constantly posting about your ex-girlfriend, shes gone, sure shes hot and you still want to sleep with her, but shes gone.

The stranger part is that in the newspaper today they said that there was no call to 911. At least thats what the redeye semi-tabloid said.

Dick Allen, I assume you are a Dr. with actual knowledge of Freddy's condition, as compared to just saying that a physical (which is completely different than a simple mri) would have shown nothing. And I thought Freddy was injured, judging by the loss of velocity. Just because he invented a split finger, didnt mean that he didnt look hurt. Yes, but Gillick gave Freddy nothing. http://www.philly.com/dailynews/sports/200...s_warranty.html Seems the Phils fans dont think it was so obvious not to give a physical either.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...orth_examining/ Note the part where it says: One league exec says his club requires it 90% of the time. I thought basically every trade says at the end "pending physical". Interesting though that you think GMs and owners would just take on millions in assets without having them physically checked. Seems pretty outrageous to me. In fact if you search pending physical and baseball trades youll basically find tons of them, compared to very few the other way.
-
Are you seriously saying the following: That you think it is worse for a GM to mistake Berry for Barry over a GM who fails to have a player take a physical? One of them is just a mistake, it happens every day. I have never met a perfect person, I have never met some one who didnt transpose a number or make a mistake on a name before. What I do expect on the other hand, is that a GM would give every single player a physical. That is derelict in your duties. I mean this was an $8mil contract, a top 10 organization wise prospect, for a guy that all you had to do was watch for 10 minutes last year to know he was injured. And he failed miserably. That is inexcusable, and Im sorry but if KW said "Well the deal is off if you give him a physical" then itd be pretty clear Freddy was damaged. I think that if KW could GM like Beane, that KW could win more games every year. But I do not think that the White Sox would have a World Series ring. I mean would people in Chicago really be happy with Beane's results?

Your right you should leave the thread, you are starting to grasp for straws on your arguments. It was pretty clear my Beane remark was a joke, it was more to the point of, when YOU read their book, you annoint them gods. It doesnt seem odd to you that you have read the Braves and A's books and then you think that they are the 2 best GM's? Im sure I could write a story about how KW is the best gm in baseball, how he reinvented the wheel, etc etc, and use the 2005 season as the proof. Any one can write a story, so the question becomes, what has KW done that another GM of the "top 13" hasnt done to be considerd a good GM. You point to Gillick, you say that KW saying Floyd was a top spect was a mistake, yet you completely dont say a word about the Garcia trade? That just completely shows bias, can you imagine if KW traded a former top 5 draft pick and a very promising lefty for a player that was injured. Who cost them millions? Can you imagine the threads on this board over that? You point to the clerical error on Berry, and realyl who cares. Its not like the guy he missed out on became even a mlb player, it was insignificant. The biggest thing you can call the Sox org on is drafting. They consistently blow first round picks. They do well in the later rounds, but they really have not drafted a stud in the top rounds for a long time (I mean guys like Thomas and Ventura are huge to draft). We will see what happens on the drafting front, right now prospects are getting really hyped and I think that is some what of a mistake. People are falling in love with "young and cheap" and its great, but unless you can draft it or sign it from outside the US, you just are not going to have a great farm system. If anything the White Sox need to start to put more emphasis on latin american player development and trying to find guys to supplement the draft. People here were yelling for Porcello at $5mil, but I think the money would be better placed in Latin America setting up developmental facilities and beating other teams to the Jose Reyes of the world. The Sox have a latin manager, they should be taking advantage of this and trying to get talent. Other than that, the White Sox have been pretty well run. And i hope that they are able to surprise some people next year.

No s*** sherlock? Billy Beane isnt an author and the book was written by Michael Lewis? It's called being facetious. But Ill gladly take the fact that you conceded my argument.

I guess to me its plain and simple, black and white. Either you won the World Series, or you didnt. That is the goal of a GM, that is the goal of a baseball franchise (unless you want to say its a business and then the goal is to make money and so far no one is even arguing about how KW is one of the most successful Sox GM's in terms of getting fans back in the park since 1994, raising revenue, and being able to spend more money on the team). But lets say that baseball is about winning. When you play you can do 1 of 2 things, win or lose. You cant "play really hard but come up short" thats losing. I dont care how you slice it, I dont care what you say, 10 years of divisions with no World Series is worthless, its a whole bunch of losing. So I ask the Gregory Pratt's of the world, how many on your list have won a world series. Because that is really the only measuring stick, sure Beane may be a great GM, he may have talent skills, etc. But until he wins a World Series he is nothing more than a guy who can put together a successful regular season team. He doesnt have the money to spend, well thats his fault. Hes the gm he should be talking to his owner about getting more money, or he should go some where else. If hes so great why is he still in Oakland? The answer is simple, in Oakland the expectations are much lower than a NY, Boston, etc. Just putting on a good show is enough to keep you there forever. Its comparing apples to oranges, Beane is under no pressure to "win today" he never has to make a bad trade to try and make the playoffs that year, because if he doesnt there wont be a bunch of fans who are calling for him to be fired 2 years after a WS or 1 year after winning 90 games and then missing the playoffs. So its easy to say the grass is greener, but who here would be happy with what Beane has done? Who here would trade the A's under Beane for the Sox under KW? I know I wouldnt, I wouldnt for 1 second. Playoffs come and go, the memories fade. I can remember seeing the Blue Jays-Sox, a Sox team that was one of the best ever, but just couldnt win in the playoffs. The 2000 playoffs with the Mariners, etc etc. They all leave bitter tastes in your mouth, I dont remember after the Sox lost to the Blue Jaysthinking "Well atleast the Sox won the division". I remember thinking "This sucks, the Sox could have won the World Series this year, who knows when the next time they may get this chance, who knows if I will ever live to see a White Sox world series." Maybe it would be different if in the last 100 years the White Sox averaged a World Series appearance every 10 years, even if maybe they won 1 every 20. But look at the past, there are plenty of Sox fans who never saw 1 World Series game, who never saw 1 World Series game victory. Let alone being able to watch the White Sox win the world series, being able to go to a parade for the White Sox winning the World Series. Those are memories that no amount of division championships can replace, it just is not comparable. So as a fan I judge the team, the coaches, the players, the GM, by one simple thing, the ultimate success. KW won a world series less than 3 seasons ago, and has hit a bump in the road. Every one does, everyone who shoots for the top prize eventually will get burned at some point. But I want the guy who shoots for everything, who goes for the gold. Because guys like Beane, they are great, they are good, but they are happy with second place, with putting on a good show. And thats not me, second place is the first loser, and honestly there is no difference between 2nd and last, except a whole bunch of excuses. I know that the Sox organization feels the same way as me, because they are filled with people who have suffered like me. I dont have any second favorite teams like the Braves or A's who I can conveniently follow when the Sox arent doing well. For me its the Sox or nothing, and right now its a bad year. But ya know what, I dont mind, I dont mind watching young guys, I dont mind some times having to take the lumps. Because I have confidence that a guy like KW is suffering right now. He isnt sitting around smiling writing a book like Billy Beane telling the world how great he is. Hes working to win next year, my feeling is probably no one is more upset/pissed about this year than KW himself, and thats the type of GM I want. I dont want a guy like Beane who is happy with 2nd.

http://www.expertlaw.com/library/personal_...defamation.html Once again, I dont know it not to be true, and Im not making with a reckless disregard to the truth. You can check NYT v. Sullivan, but its almost impossible to show a reckless disregard for the truth, without proving that the person knew it to be false. Briggs would have to prove that he did not drink, and well that in itself would end the case. Because how can you prove a negative in this case? Edit And I was just using the Falwell case, because if in doubt I could always claim "parody" and how could you ever disprove that. Hence why actors always sue in England for libel/slander, and do not go to US courts. And im not even getting into the "opinion" loop hole.

Well as a GM your goal should be: Winning the World Series Not: Winning a lot of divisions and losing in the playoffs. To me the answer is easy, Id rather be the guy with the crown, than the who was was "this close". No one remembers second place, no one remembers great streaks of almost winning. GM has 1 goal, to win World Series. You have a farm system to help you win them, you have a team to win them, and I dont care how set youa re for the next 20 years, if you dont win one, then it really didnt matter.

Briggs is a public figure, I can write: Lance Briggs was out last night drinking boots at the Essen Haus in Madison, subsequently drove through Kenosha where he stopped for a little pornography, before crashing his Lambo while watching one of the DVD's he bought. And there is really nothing that they could do. He is a public figure, if he wants to sue me for defamation he would have to prove malice, and quite frankly since I have absolutely no clue what happened I can say whatever I want. Just like when Hustler said that stuff about Jerry Falwell.

How many of the present MLB gms have a World Series ring?

Is this the worst year in your Soxfandom?
Soxbadger replied to Hideaway Lights's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Worst year was the strike. Worst defeat was to the Mariners in the playoffs. This year is just one of those, some times things go absolutely as bad as you can imagine. -
Well then you probably will never be happy as a Sox fan. Can you count how many times they have won 90 games back to back? Because if this isnt good enough, I dont know what is.
-
I have to say no one. 2 years of 90+ wins, 1 year of bad. Ill wait and see till next year, not exactly sure what other GM's would have done better or worse, considering the Sox have had a few GM's in my life time and most did not put together the winning teams that KW has.

It was a really messed up scene. The guy just goes from running /standing, to on his knees, to on the ground. Then you see another player trying to open the guys mouth so that they can pull his tongue out. The announcer is yelling "Hes swallowed his tongue" and you can see that his teammate is really struggling to try and get his mouth open. The medics run on the field while play is going on the other side of the field, a few seconds later, the guy is standing up walking and gets removed from the game. He walks off the field on his own power, and everything seemed fine. But I guess now it appears the guy suffered subsequent heart failures. Ive never seen anything like it in any sporting event. No contact, the guy just went straight down.
