Soxbadger replied to greasywheels121's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Rex, I was basically saying that its very hard for anyone to turn down that type of money. College is a great time, but it is because of the freedom and fact that most of us will never experience a time like that again. With the type of money Oden will make he will never have to worry again. He will be able to basically do whatever he wants within reason for the rest of his life. I cant imagine risking all of that for 1 year of college, because realistically staying 4 years is an absolutely devastating risk. So the difference between leaving after 1 year or 2 years is negligible. I have no idea what will happen. Im just making stating what I think the decision will be for most players who will be the 1 or 2 pick. This is not the same for a top 5-10 player, but when you are on top the only place you can go is down. If Oden had entered the draft instead of going to OSU he would hvae been a lock for 1. After playing 1 year now some say he may go after Durant. Those millions add up and its just not financially advisable. As to everyone else and the court rushing. Im proud that Indiana rushed the floor against Wisconsin. The only time I ever rushed a field was when Wisconsin made the final 4 in 1999 and the players came back for a pep rally at Camp Randal. It was at night and the players were some what egging on the crowd, so finally everyone just ran on the field and then towards the capital. So for special moments, ones that are going to be memorable for atleast 10+ years, sure go ahead rush the floor. And if that is what beating Wisconsin has become, then I am proud to be a Badger tonight. -

At that point he would most likely already have millions in signed contracts so its not as big of a deal. I work with risk all the time, I would never advise any client to take such a risk with their life. Its not to say some people wouldnt do it, just imo it is foolish. 1 year of college bball is not worth any amount of risk, even if the risk is so minute that it would never happen. The difference is this risk is not small, as there are plenty of examples of guys staying and hurting their draft status. Not very many stay who could be #1 overall and improve their draft status. -

But why take the risk? Even if the risk is .01%, why take it? You are not talking about financial security here, this is about so much wealth that his childrens children will probably never have to worry about money if he does not spend it foolishly. Playing 1 more year is just not worth the risk. Unless your parents are Bill Gates, etc and the money does not mean anything anyways. Otherwise its time to move from being a big fish in a medium pond, to big fish in big pond. -
I didnt say you were from indiana, it clearly states your from Niles, Michigan. But I thought you currently were in Indiana.

I agree that the risk for Oden is not that high. But some of the guys you mentioned did severely impact how much money they were paid. McGahee went from potentially top 10 pick, to late first round. Cromartie left the first year he was eligible, had he stayed this year and then left this draft he most likely would have been one of the top cb's on the board. A guy like Lee Evans is the best comparison. He stayed after 2001 tore his ACL in 2002, therefore had to stay in 2003 as well, and then finally went to the draft. Its hard to project where he would have gone but his 2001 stats were significantly better than his 2003 and there was no injury history also. Its just very hard to leave 100mil (salary, bonus, endorsements) on the table for college basketball. -
Gotta keep it real. Indiana is the enemy. Until they fall to the mighty Bears and of course give back yesterdays game to the Badgers. Then maybe there will be some sort of reciprocity given.

Knight is just mad that hes in Indiana and therefore dq'ed. Where as me a Chicago native, and of course the best White Sox fan on the planet will be able to enter.

I think if UNC played at Indiana it would have been a much closer game. And that if Miami played at Wisconsin it would have been a blow out. Really doesnt change much, they are both top 5 teams and which ever style of play you think will win out, is the one youre going to bet on in the tourney. -

I dont see why this would really change anyone's opinion on Wisconsin. Anyways the win by Indiana may mean that another Big 10 team possibly gets into the NCAA tournament. If OSU, Wisconsin, and Indiana all finish in the top 15 its hard to imagine that 2 other Big 10 schools wont get in. -

I understand completely. Its just a huge turn around for the Wisconsin program from even 10 years ago? Even the final four team of 1999 they were over-achievers. Now they have a legitimate team and great program. There are some crazy stats about how many times Bob Knight beat Wisconsin in a row. So its just nice to see that Wisconsin is a team that is worth rushing the floor for. -

Good game. And a definite statement for the Wisconsin program when the great and almighty Indiana rushes the floor. Had our chances at the end but Tucker and Krabbenhoft for the final 2 3's arent going to get it done. -

Well the Badgers are going into half time and will see that Florida is losing. In other words they could be the first Wisconsin team in history to ever hold a #1 ranking. Hopefully that will be enough motivation to get a win. I cant see the game but imo Badgers need to go at White and try and get him his 3rd foul early. Judging from the people who have played for the Badgers (and who havent) it seems Indiana is going with a smaller line up so I expect that Wisconsin may tamper with landry guarding White for the remainder of the game. The word of the day is preemption. Time for ESPN to act on that word. -

Ill have you know when wisconsin's offense is doing bad its their fault. And when Indiana's offense is doing bad its clearly Wisconsin's defense. I didnt mean it as disrespect, just meant that both teams play good defense so both offenses are probably going to struggle. -

I cant even see the game. But judging from the boxscore you can say the same thing about Wisconsin shooting 5-15 is about as bad as you will see them play. -

According to the ESPN announcers at the OSU - Purdue game, Wisconsin no longer plays at OSU. Sweet (now they corrected it) Do they even do research? -

Yeah I know Oden is awesome. But is he even playing tonight? And how bad does it suck that ESPNHD barely plays HD basketball games. It sucks even worse when you DVR/Tivo it, it wastes all your memory and then is nto even HD. -

Generalisimo Chavez now officially a dictator.
Soxbadger replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in The Filibuster
But does it give him the power to be above the law? That is really the most important question of a dictator. IE: Could he legally rewrite the laws to say that he never has to be re-elected, or does this law still preserve some restraints on his power. I dont know, just from the article it does not seem to be stating that he has unlimited absolute power, yet. -

Technically not a dictator as he was elected and does not have absolute power in Venezuala. . If in 6 years he is not re-elected but remains in power he will "officially" be a dictator. -

5 or 9 wahts the difference. They still were regarded as a top 10 team, and its very hard to imagine that anyone believed Miami would be better than Indiana. If Wisconsin was an ACC team thsi game would 100% be on tv, and thats my bigges tproblem with ESPN. And why I will have no problem not watching their channel in the upcoming years when more Big 10 games move away from it. They also screwed the Big 10 during the football season. -

Que? Wisconsin was top 5 to start the season and was on the cover of SI. And I know about the ACC thats why I said the comment about how could we live without ACC basketball. Another reason is that the Big 10 is starting their own network and it is part of the reason why ESPN has placed many of their games on ESPN + and its other networks that you have to pay for or call your cable provider. They are worried should the Big 10 channel become popular that their other services will start to feel the loss of viewership.
