No point in arguing this with some. Unless a guy is instantly amazing you may as well give up on him. Despite the negativity, Gio can definitely be effective if he can harness his control just a bit more.
-
All the more reason to rack up those losses now. Because youre going to want to get quality starts wins out of guys like Rodon etc.
-
All those wins really worked out for the Bulls.
-
And here I was ready to post that I hope next year we arent sweating on draft day because 1 meaningless win cost us the chance to pick the guy we really wanted.

Draft Day 2 Thread - Rounds 3-10 (Tracker in OP)
Soxbadger replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
Its not about baseball. Youd literally have to hire someone immediately to start a pr campaign. A certain amount of people wont ever even consider the idea that he is possibly innocent. And this is presupposing that he really is innocent. If somehow the guy is guilty and he does something terrible in the future, youd have basically thrown away tons of good will and trust. A team like the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs etc could take this type of risk. They are going to sell out no matter what. Sox not so much. -

As part of the deal he was required to write that he did it, even though at all times he has denied it. Its a messed up situation, and there is no point in derailing another thread. Sox wont pick him. -
Draft Day 2 Thread - Rounds 3-10 (Tracker in OP)

He has talked as well as his parents. He was 15, he adamantly denied ever doing anything wrong. His father was in a custody battle. His family and his lawyer convinced him to take a deal that would erase it from his record in 5 years. If he went to trial and lost his father potentially would have lost custody of his other children. Throughout the entire time he has always stated he was innocent. But in order to get the deal he was forced to write a letter as if he committed the crime. He has taken a ploygraph and the results determined he was telling the truth when he denied any sexual contact. Its a messed up situation for a 15 year old to be in. Especially when your lawyer tells you that even if your innocent a jury will likely believe the child. -

If it was something really bad, maybe. But the main issue for me in this case, is that I actually think hes innocent. If I thought he was guilty, it would be an entirely different discussion. -

Given the facts of the situation, yes. Im not going to rehash the arguments. There are pages worth, my personal opinion is that he is innocent and took a deal because that was the best option given to him as a 15 year old. -

2018 NFL off-season thread

I dont think those people were really fans anyways. There is no way to prove it, but for the most part the cities where NFL teams are located are generally liberal. -

This is why it was foolish for the NFL to cave to a bully. No matter what they do, Trump is going to create problems. It is a personal vendetta that stems from his failure in the USFL. By trying to appease Trump they are chasing a fan base they will never catch, while at the same time annoying the fan base they have. If they keep sticking their heads in the sand, they are going to lose more and more. At some point they have to call Trump on his lies. -
The 2018 MLB Draft Thread (Tracker in OP)

Without trades, theres just no way to make this exciting. Its basically just filing time on MLB network, so its probably getting better ratings than their normal programming. -

If I had to bet, Id say Callis likely has more Sox info. But there seems to be a lot of jockeying about picks right now because I think teams are looking to save money for later picks. -
Which is why I have no problem with the White Sox passing on him. Even if I could see the future and know with 100% certainty hed never commit another crime, id still say that the pr hit is likely too great. Just interesting to see how people react and dismiss the idea that someone innocent could cut a deal. Especially a 15 year old kid.
-
Ive said the Sox shouldnt draft him due to pr. And if it goes to trial and he loses its suicide. If it goes to trial and he wins its suicide. Once you are accused of this type of crime its a life long stain. That is the reality. He came really close to this deal really being great for him. But thats life. This isnt a false confession. This is potentially an innocent person taking a plea deal because of the totality of the circumstances. Its easy as adults to try and say "id never taken the deal", but he was 15. All of the people in his life were pressuring him to take the deal. Who knows what was said, who knows if his parents didnt imply they wouldnt pay for his lawyer if he didnt plea. I dont know, no one does. But the justice system is full of grey. And as someone who believes in world 2, I cant say with 100% certainty that his version isnt true. The only impartial opinion on the subject found him to likely be innocent. That holds weight with me.

Guilty doesnt mean you did it. And I know youve argued this type of thing in the buster many times about defendants who were convicted wrongfully. I think this is the specific case: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/20/nyregion/5-exonerated-in-central-park-jogger-case-are-to-settle-suit-for-40-million.html (edit) Now imagine those guys had been given an offer "plea guilty and youll get 5 years probation, it then gets sealed and expunged." Not a bad deal when the other option was they went to jail for multiple years. (edit 2) And I dont want to clog up this thread, so basically there are 2 worlds you can live in. World 1: The justice system is perfect, innocent people are never convicted or World 2: The justice system is imperfect and innocent people are wrongfully convicted. If you live in world 2 than you have to understand why given the circumstances he would have taken the deal even though he was innocent. That is not to say he is 100% innocent or guilty, just that it is understandable why an innocent person would take a deal.

This isnt true at all when it comes to this type of case. The only evidence the prosecutor had was the testimony of a child. There were a lot of different factors here, but one of the main ones was that his father was in a custody battle of his other children. By pleading guilty his father was able to keep the children. If he had gone to trial and lost, his whole family would have been torn apart. Youre acting like a 15 year old is going to go against the advice of their attorney and their parents. That just isnt realistic, especially when they all tell you that in 5 years it will be over and youll never have to worry about anything.
-
This is the exact reason why he had to plead guilty and take the deal. Even though all of the evidence suggests he is innocent, you adamantly say he is a child molester without any fact that supports your conclusion. /shrugs

Own up to what actions? He has always said he was innocent, his lawyer suggested he take a plea deal so that he could move on with his life. Even right now, knowing the facts of the case, most people seem to assume he did it, when all of the facts suggest the contrary. I dont think the Sox should take him for pr reasons, but he did what many reasonable people would have done given the circumstances. Especially as his parents were pressuring him due to an unrelated matter that involved custody of his brothers/sisters.
