Congressional Elections Results Thread
EvilMonkey replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
http://www.politicsinminnesota.com/ Nothing to see here......move along......No new votes being added here....... I can't find the link, but I read somewhere that the tape they provided with the new totals on it had the wrong date. The optical scanners make a printout when done, and the election judges are supposed to sign it and make it available for public display. Apparently that wasnt done. Give them enouugh time, I am sure they can 'fix' that date error on the tape. -
Yes, I am the one screaming that the sky is falling. You need to be aware of the possibilities. And even then, I don't think I have been too unreasonable.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) And how do you feel about giving scholarships for community and civil service, similar to the GI bill? Then you run into the problem of what community service is acceptable for the grants? As a Republican, I in no way, shape or form think that ACORN is a program worthy of government money, especially since they are such a biased organization for Democrats. However, I can see them as being listed as an appropriate program to satisfy the requirements. I know there is an organization out there similat to ACORN that supposedly works to register Republicans, and it would be wrong for them as well to be used for this.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:52 AM) Alpha, you have taken this thing and carried it waaaaaaay beyond what is being suggested. Free labor for life? Its debatable if even the school-age segment is required, and there is NOTHING in there that even HINTS at requiring adults to do anything. You've taken this to an extreme as if to prove a slippery slope point or something, but you are stating is as if it was fact. The slippery slope thing is the WHOLE point. What is to prevent this from becoming an all-encompassing program with citizens of all ages having to do 'service' work? Seems right now that there are a whole bunch of people in here that have no problem with the government telling them that their kids have to spend 100 hours or so doing something that they probably dont want to do. So, willing to give away your freedom for this? Where is your line that can't be crossed? Will you all feel that way when it evolves into adults having to do service work in order to get a tax refund? You don't HAVE to do the work, but if you want a refund, well, then you know what your 'choice' will be. And it is not far fetched to think it couldn't happen. Have you ever known a government program to STOP growing? Whoever administers this will find some way to expand their power and scope, and none of the possibilities are good.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:38 AM) Damn right, you see them coaching baseball, football, soccer, you see them volunteering in the school, at football games selling popcorn, at Scout meetings, all over the place. I guess they are idiots trying to better their community instead of sitting on their ass asking for someone else to do it. But don't worry, when your kids are in those programs, someone else will do it for you. Whoa Tex. No where did I say or suggest that volunteering was bad. Perhaps you missed it in the very forst post that myself, wife and oldest son all volunteer. Forcing someone to volunteer is wrong. Making it a condition to graduate is wrong.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) But I typed it in green. Some people dont read green.

This sort of compromise is like the Feds telling the states to raise thier drinking age to 21 if they want Federal highway dollars. Sure, they have the OPTION to not do it, but it really isn't an option because they can't do without the Federal cash.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:19 AM) He typed it in green I know, I just wanted to be clear, that's all.

I think all the focus here on students, which was most of that part listed, is being short-sighted. There was also these gems there. 1) Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, 2) Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55 So, even after you get out of school, it seems like he wants free labor for life. Anybody here in their 30's or 40's with 2 or 3 kids and a job have 50 - 100 extra hours to spare?

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) They get arrested repeatedly actually. It's called Civil Disobedience. For them arrests mean that it is working. But they dont get charged with anything that sticks. Always release without bail or fines. Never a charge that sticks. Make them pay at least to cover all the expense of thier civil disobedience. There are fines and in some locals jail time for the crap they do, but it never gets imposed.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) Obviously he's saying that black people everywhere are going to think they are invincible and raise hell. um, no. But if you want to substitute /crazed Obama supporters', of which there are many of all colors, then yes.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 09:39 AM) lol, that's hilarious. Normally I'd go on some rant about how she's making other people look bad but she deserves it. Hopefully they tasered her. She made herself look bad for sure. I respect people's rights to protest and make asses of themselves, but in cases like this where they clearly cross the line, they need to be punished, and with more than just a slap on the wrist. It has to be somewhat severe to serve as a warning to them and others that there IS a line you can't cross. All those Code Pink protests we were subjected to the last 2 years? not one charge ever brought against them, for anything. There has to be something they can be charged with, even if it is just a misdemeanor. but they are always let go, facing no reprecusions, so they feel empowered to do it again, and again. protest all you want. but be prepared to pay the price if you break the law.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) So now getting people involved in their communities for a couple weeks a year and to help their fellow neighbors is considered a bad thing? I'm not a religious person but it seems like there's too many people today complaining about doing things the bible taught people to do. Forcing them to do it when they dont want to is a bad thing. yes.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 09:35 AM) wait, "calling on" isnt slave labor? oh might wanna tell Alpha that. My son is FORCED to do 50 hours of community service just to graduate high school. For him, it is a good thing that he hasbeen doing it for years, so he has no problem with it. But if youare forced to do it against your will, what else would you call it? The flowery language might say 'call upon', but you know that it will somehow be manditory in order to graduate, or get governemtn benefits, or some other form of whip to make you do it.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) We have become a country of lazy, self-centered, fatasses who couldn't careless about our fellow citizens. I welcome community service. However, I disagree on the college part. Middle school and high school is ok with me. So what? Liberals complain about the government getting involved in our personal lives all the time. Well, here they are getting involved big time. get the f*** out of mine and my kids lives. They are not available for slave labor.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 07:34 AM) The gap between Coleman and Franken is now down to 240 votes. yeah, how many more times are they going tohave to recount those votes to make up the difference there? -
http://change.gov/americaserves/ As someone who volunteers, and whose wife and son also volunteer, we hate people who are FORCED to volunteer. They don't want to be there and couldn't give two s***s about whatever job they are doing and just want it over. You spend more time supervising or watching them than you do getting actual work done. And if you are FORCING them to do it, they will resent it. And how long until some program pop up to take care of these community service obligations that involve politics? Nothing like a little political indoctrination while they are young to ensure success throughout the years. This program subordinates individual freedom to the collective. THAT IS NOT AMERICA!

And so it begins...... Chicago: Arrests at Obama Victory Rally, Woman Yells "White [expletive], [expletive] McCain--you White Police Can't do Nothing Anymore"...Then Proceeds to Slap a White Cop. Much to her amazement, they can, and did, do something. http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2008/11...bama-rally.html

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) I was 15 when we had to put my dog to sleep. Got him when I was in 1st grade. It was sooooo hard! I don't know if I want to get another dog ever again so I don't have to go through that pain again. I'm a softy. I have said that before as well, but most people end up doing it again anyway. You feel good taking care of a pet, and the affection you get in return usually makes up for it. Have had to put down 3 dogs throughout my life, and had a few just die from old age (and one got hit by a car). You go on. My older dog now can barely make it up the stairs, and is out of breath when she does. I fear she may only have a year or two left as well.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) Come on, Alpha Dog, how can you act like the 77 day period between election and inauguration has ever been different. Yeah, in most of our lifetimes it hasbeen that way, but not always so. Even back in kennedy and Ford days, the two sides actually worked together, once in a while. Dem started to get sour after reagan and repubs after Clinton.

QUOTE (juddling @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 07:25 PM) Thank God for The Shield....a small break from the election b.s. Vic has blown it TWICE now in the last 2 weeks. First, trying to cap 'em both in a hospital parking lot, and then having the gangbangers bring him in alive? Should have told them to shoot on sight, bring back his wallet or something. No chance for escape. Almost any way out now will be really a big stretch, so I am waiting to see how the writers pull this off with only 3 left.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 08:20 PM) yea it ended up being 58%-42% in favor or Murtha. Sorry, was looking at Minn. numbers.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 07:07 PM) He used the same tactic as McConnell. They said they have Washington influence, therefore they can get the most earmarks for their state. No joke, both ran on a 'I can deliver the pork' platform and it helped both. Murtha wasn't really in that much jeopardy of losing (not enough rednecks were offended to equal a loss IMO), but his arguments of his ability to secure federal money cemented a landslide win. landslide?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) George Bush is our President until January 20th. Who is pretty much a lame duck and will be able to get nothing done, because how dare the Democrats do anything good BEFORE thier man gets in the office. Although he was unable to get anything done before, because how dare the democrats let a republican president get credit for anything good.

In the first 100 days he gets on his knees before the crotch of organized labor and signs the Employee Free Choice Act thereby crippling American industries even more. And he actually get something done about energy, but with all the infighting between enviro groups and such, it will be fairly watered down.
