  1. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 10:14 PM) So just having a birth certificate, social security card, utility bills, and a matching signature isn't enough to identify anyone. Wow, how did democracy work before cameras? Now you will require that every person registers with the state and has their photo taken. Shall we fingerprint too while we are at it? How about a little tattoo? And brain dead liberal? I guess you forgot the rules that you just agreed to follow. I didn't call Balta a brain deal liberal. Are you denying that there are brain dead liberals out there? I know that there are brain dead conservatives out there somewhere.
  2. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) Exactly, either way someone is going to find something wrong with this. I think that State Identification should not be required to vote, I would just like to have some document with the name of the voter on it. This also raises a question to me about the homeless. How do they vote? I'm sure the vast majority of homeless don't vote, but if they wanted to, where do they get registered without an address and such? Just kinda popped into my mind there. Actually, in most cities, homeless people can list a shelter as their address for voting purposes and to receive mail. Assuming they are not one of the crazy-homeless who refuse to go to shelters, or that there are shelters where they happen to be.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 09:16 PM) However, you are still getting the system you want, where they find excuse after excuse to turn away voters who just happen to be African American, poor, and so on. Sure, bang that drum some more. ID required to vote, poor and minorities hit hardest! The sun shines bright! The poor and minorities hit hardest! Hey, here is an idea, smoke 2 less packs of cigarettes for a week and get off your ass and get a state ID. Maybe buy some shoes at Payless one time instead of the $300 Air Jordans and get an ID. If you are a poor minority who is obviously not working, go to the DMV on a weekday morning and get that ID when the lines are the shortest. http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/apps/pb...381/1006/NEWS01 http://www.kmbc.com/politics/10214492/detail.html That's alot of potentially fraudulent votes there, in just one city by one group. http://www.epionline.org/news_detail.cfm?rid=171 Oh gee, the same group at it in 12 states! How many dead and non-existant people have they signed up?!?! And it goes both ways. http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/blogs/politica...ly-in-utah.html Wow, maybe a few pregnant moms signed up thier youngin's early, eh?
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 07:33 PM) But if you're arguing that if they don't want to get a state issued photo ID they shouldn't have the right to vote, aren't you arguing that the right should be taken away from those people? Then you and I will forever disagree on this because I in no way see having to identify yourself in order to vote as in any way denying someone the right to vote. You have the right of free speech, but it has been upheald time and again that it is not an unlimited right, there are rules and restrictions. Same with voting. You have to register, and you have to prove who the hell you are, both things that are not very hard to do. if you are too lazy to do that, oh well.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 07:24 PM) Well, whether you like it or not, every person in this country who is a citizen over the age of 18 has the right to vote. The fact that you or I pay more attention to specific issues than they do does not matter to me one bit, and it is not a reason by which we ought to start judging whether or not the person gets that right. Ok, at the risk of breaking the rules here, can you read? I never said that they should have thier right to vote taken away from them. I said I don't give a flying f*** if they vote if they can't take the time to get up off thier asses and do something simple like have an ID or at least know SOMETHING about the issues. YES, they still have a right to vote even if they are a brain dead liberal, I just don't care if they can't be bothered to go excercise it.
  6. Game should have been called after the 8th with all the water coming down and already on the field.
  7. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) I agree, for people who already have a photo ID, it is not. For those people who do not, it is. Some of those people should be inconvenienced to the point of not being able to vote, but some will be citizens who will look at this and stop voting. In a country where less then 25% of eligible voters will actually vote in an off year elected, we ought to be very careful how many extra steps we add, no matter how small. Frankly, if someone can't come up with enough desire, energy and time to get off thier asses and go vote, I don't WANT them to vote. They are also likely to not have one clue as to any issue, or if they do, they are single issue voters at best who do nothing but piss away thier right to vote in blissfull ignorance. There will always be exceptions (such as SOME seniors who are not very mobile, but still have their wits), but if the average person is 'inconvenienced' at having to have an ID to vote, they can just stay home. It obviously isn't that important to them.
  8. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) Does it sound like I'm questioning your authority? Can you even read what I type (authoriTAY!)?
  9. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) The nursing home/retirement home vans are running all over the place. They drop patients off here and there at Doctor's appointments, shopping, etc. Since this is a huge retirement area, I see quite a bit about it. I think the more valid point is, many are going to say why bother? We are punishing those people which may or may not be a fair price to pay. Let's remember the names are already on the voting rolls. So you have to provide a picture ID that patches a name already on the rolls. I guess the fraud this could stop is one person visiting dozens of polling places with names of recently deceased individuals. See, that is just it. Why is it considered PUNISHMENT to have to get an ID?
  10. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 01:04 PM) I'd need to take out aloan just to afford the gas to get to the Cell let alone have enough for 2 beers to get wasted on Only takes 2 for you? You must be a cheap date!
  11. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 12:05 PM) Where did you hear that? Are you questioning my authoritay?
  12. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 01:22 PM) volunteers or nursing homes provide special accomidations. (and if anyone doesnt have a relative in a nursing home, the idea of them taking out 1-by-1 for ID's aint gonna happen) So, they'll arrange for them to vote, but not get an ID? If they can get special arrangements made for voting, I am sure they could get the same set of arrangements for getting ID's.
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 12:23 PM) How will they handle absentee ballots? Don't you know you are not supposed to answer a question with a question?
  14. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 12:25 PM) .... we are talking about such a small percentage of people, it seems stupid they are even creating a law. Sounds alot like the making hybrid cars noisier problem,eh?There is such a small percentage of people who would be affected by the law, it seems stupid that they are even creating one.
  15. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) Seriously, who pays with checks anymore. To offset bank accounts for those without them (either illegal or bad credits) most banks are now offering a payroll card solution for employers. Thus the employers don't write out checks (or pay cash) to employees. They autodeposit funds into a debit card type solution. As for beer, how many 18 year olds do you know who drink beer without a valid ID. Alot of people get paychecks still. Go to any inner city currency exchange and you'll see. Those people also don't usually have bank accounts to auto-deposit to, or debit cards to draw from.
  16. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 10:49 AM) and that's important. now how do you overcome those who can not physically go in and re-apply for an ID card once theirs has expired. think nursing homes, etc. If they can't physically go get an id, how can they physically vote?
  17. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) If you live in the City and don't drive, what do you need an ID for? Cash a check, get a job, get into a bar, buy beer, take out a loan, obtain a lease, open a bank account, if you are detained by the police, .... Most of the voter ID laws contain provisions to waive the ID fees for people who cannot pay.
  18. I'm heartened to see that in this 'slowing economy' that so many young people have enough disposable income to get trashed on beer at a Soxgame. For me to drink enough beer at the Cell to get wasted I would need to take out a loan.
  19. QUOTE (Mplssoxfan @ Apr 27, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) Thanks, Alpha. I'm a little uncertain about this quote, though. Left-over alcohol? I'm unfamiliar with the concept. Yeah, I saw that. I know what he means, but it is a sin to not finish your drink. There was a bar I worked at briefly that used to dump out the dregs from beer bottles left behind and stuff into a special sink which kept it out of the sewers. I always wondered if they recycyled that into mystery shots or something, but didn't really want to know.
  20. One more. Singing is bad, though. It's no 'Obama Girl'.
  21. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/27/technolo...xprod=permalink Put an ethanol pump right in your own backyard! Make your own gas!
  22. I just want a relief pitcher that doesn't go 3-0 on his first damn batter! And 4 straight balls is unacceptable! Gee, dumbass, he didn't swing at the first 2 low curveballs in the dirt you threw, what makes you think he would swing at the third?
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 26, 2008 -> 12:20 PM) No, the reporter played the race card. And heck, Obama wasn't even involved here. Obama's CAMP. David Plouffe is Barack Obama's campaign manager. Imagine McCain's campaign guy saying "the vast, vast majority of voters who would not vote for John McCain in November based on race are probably firmly in Obama's camp already."
  24. Funny part about the actors strike, the actors who benefit from the union the most (the bit players, extras, etc.) and possibly being shut out of the vote by the ones who benefit the least (big name stars). There is a push among many of the bigger stars to have voting somehow based upon what you earn or how much you work, in effect shutting out the little guy.
