QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) But it's also possible that allowing people to carry in an environment like a school, especialy where people are untrained and things like alcohol could be involved, you'll wind up with more casualties due to the people carrying in the first place. That statement right there assumes that every Tom Dick and Crazy-ass Harry who wants to carry, would be ABLE to carry. Who would go for a carry permit? A campus that size, you may only have 20 people who would even WANT to carry, much less pass a background to be able to carry, so again, the mass hysteria of gunfights in the hallways is just a strawman used to create fear. One guy in any one of those roooms with a concealed carry, would have been able to prevent many of those deaths. Even if it just occupied the gunman in that room for a while longer, others would have had more time to escape, get help, barricade themselves in rooms, etc.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 10:26 AM) Also, people I don't think a conceal and carry law would have helped at all here. The victims were students (in an early morning class) and professors. Who the heck would think to bring a gun to class? Who would think that was necessary and a worthwhile thing to do? Never in my very long college career have I ever thought it would be necessary. It wouldn't be worth the time or effort to pack it and bring it to class. In 2006 the state of VA defeated a measure to allow concealed carry on campuses. The bill was prompted by the suspension of a student who was suspended for carrying, even though he had a legal concealed carry permit. So obviously SOMEONE thought to do it, at least once. if that student had been there on that day, maybe things would be different. Read post #11 in this thread. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) Look at the verbiage. It doesn't state that you must be part of a militia. It gives a reason for giving people the right to own guns, not a condition. The rights still belong to individuals, not groups or militias. It's convenient to overlook that part when making a point that goes against it.

It's not that easy to get a concealed carry permit, so not every wacko you may bump into would be packing. it costs money, background checks and time. Your scenerios of doom are just fantasies. I wonder how long it will be until we get some new, knee-jerk legislation regarding this incident?

Could the passage of this law have helped tp prevent the VA shootings? http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/wb/xp-50658

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 12, 2007 -> 07:38 PM) While it is always dangerous to compare two disimilar events, in this case the parallels are compelling. Great post. The idea not mine (but the words are), but thanks anyway.

So if it turns out it was a translation 'error' from China, does the family file a civil rights lawsuit against China, or just stick with the locals that they can more easily reach?

OK, IMus, a rich, white male makes his comments about some (poor?) black females about a week ago. As a result of his comments, they faced no jail time, and weren't indicted on anything like aggrevated hoeing, or even misdemeanor nappy-headingness. For this, Imus is fired, after about a week. It took the Rutgers women a little over a week to get their 'justice' for a slight that hurt their feelings. On the other side you have Crystal Gail Mangum, a poor, black woman. And, you know, a whore, a criminal, a thief, and a perjurer. She makes comments about the Duke 3, who are indicted for one of the worst crimes possible by not only the DA, but by the media and just about every feminist group in the world. They faced 25 years or more in jail because of those comments, and it took them a year to get justice. No wait, Nifong is still employed, at least at this moment, along with his bosses, the guy who helped him hide the DNA evidence, etc. Who's the more agreived party here, the Duke 3 or the women basketball players? With the way CBS is acting now, you would think being called a nappy headed ho is worse than rape. Imus was an idiot, but this overreaction is just wrong. CBS had no problems with all the money he made for them, maybe they should donate the profits from his shows over the last year or so to Nappy-headed Hoes Anonomyous, or something. You know, get rid of that tainted money.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 12, 2007 -> 11:31 AM) I think I love you, but what am I so afraid of? You're afraid of a love there's no cure for.

I don't care about Imus one way or the other, but watching the coach on TV, these lines from above came to mind immediatly, along with the word 'overacting'.

Bush invites Dems to White House, re: Iraq
EvilMonkey replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 07:58 AM) That would be right here... No, I am saying that you were misinterpreting his statement as an unwillingness to negotiate. I said it was a statement of his opening position, so he has room to move, if he chooses to. It in no way says that I endorse the 'If you disagree with me, you're wrong' way of thinking you describe. -
I didn't see a thread on this so i'll throw it up here. The Blue Jays came up with humorous ad for Frank after airing once or twice it was pulled because...well...maybe you can tell me why it was pulled. I thought it was humorous....FT ad It's not like the commercial ends with the kid on the floor lying with him arm twisted at an impossible angle....again...i thought it was a good ad. They said it was too violent for the airwaves. Everyone knows....pillows don't hurt kids....people hurt kids

Bush invites Dems to White House, re: Iraq
EvilMonkey replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 06:41 PM) I see you have the BushCo line down pat - if you disagree with my way of doing things, you must be wrong. And where did I say that? I was just pointing out that stating upfront that he has a non-negotiable point is not a bad thnig, but could be a negotiating strategy. I seem to recall Bush 'negotiating' an education bill with Teddy Kennedy, and when Teddy got what he negotiated, he then comes out in the press and slammed Bush for not giving him enough. That's real incentive to negotiate further. -
Bush invites Dems to White House, re: Iraq
EvilMonkey replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 10:06 AM) So, the President has graciously invited Congressional Democratic leaders to the White House to discuss Iraq, but places a caveat before the meeting that he won't be changing his stance on withdrawal. . You obviously don't know how to negotiate. Bush learned this from North Korea. If he would have said something like "Come on over and let's talk, maybe we can come to some sort of middle ground", he would have been toast, because the Dems would have taken the middle ground as a STARTING POINT, and worked from there. That's how it works. He simply stated his starting point, 'I am not changing my mind', and then he can go down from there, if he feels like it. Once he starts in the middle, you can't go back. -
It would cost me about $7000 in new software, just to get all my program s to RUN on Vista. They still don't have print drivers for most of my copiers and printers, so I would be dead in the water if it would be my only choice. I don't care how easy it is to use, it isn't $7000 easier than what I have now.
-
You know, if Bush and Rove were truely evil, they would both resign and leave us with a Pelosi presidency for the last leg of this journey. The Dems would be damned if they do and damned if they don't. Either they pass all their crap, and the electorate sees them for what they are and they lose in 08, or they do nothing, and get hammered as the do-nothing party when they were literally handed the opportunity to 'bring the troops home' on a silver platter.

I liked the outing from Danks, but was disappointed that we couldn't get any runs in either of the first two innings. 3 runs from Danks in any 6 inning start is better than most of the 5th starters in baseball, and one that the Sox should win most of the time.

The Al Gore discussion, split from GOP/DEM
EvilMonkey replied to mr_genius's topic in The Filibuster
It seems the defenders of the Goracle go for the intellectual insults rather that the lowbrow ones when confronting those that dare expose the Goracle to the light. NOT. http://www.shns.com/shns/g_index2.cfm?acti...URDOCK-04-05-07 -
No,Tex just chooses to ignore what refutes his argument. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=1380223 I listed the section of the bill that specifically refers to what Tex claims, and it makes provisions to take care of people who knowingly submit false reports. Oh, and if they are wearing that black, oversized hooded sweatsuit when it is 90 degrees out, I am gonna report it.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...n1.43eb5c4.html Another case where Muslims are engaging in suspicious behavior, and then act like Alfred E. Neuman, "What, me"?". One of them admits to being a trained sniper, and then has the balls to say that they are not a dangerous person? Any bets as to when CAIR steps in and claims that this is more Islamophobia in action? Hell, In 1983 when I was taking up photography, I used to go out to the Lansing Airport and take pictures of the planes as they landed. Even back then, I had cops stop me, ask me what I was doing, search my car, etc. Just what did they THINK would happen?

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 07:51 PM) Well, not bad, 8th post to get to somebody finding what was wrong with somebody wanting to help people. I had hopes of everybody actually finding it wrong that this guy got punished. If I owned a nice restaurant and this guy was setting up out front or next to my building, feeding homeless people, I would be plenty pissed and would call the police. Don't they have soup kitchens, or churches out there that do this sort of thing?

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 08:04 PM) This is indeed true about the classification being very broad for people that aren't necessarily kiddy diddlers. There is a major difference between the case you mentioned and the kind like the perv "Let me put a blindfold on multiple second graders and have them play 'tasting games'!"teacher at Thomas Paine Elementary around here in Urbana. I'd prefer some sort of halfway house or controlled social setting for them upon their release. Making them homeless transients doesn't do anything to help anybody. If the government spent the time not only tracking them for notification purposes but also for medical (both medicine and psychological counseling) help purposes, then things would not only still be controlled for safety purposes but be much more humane. I agree that there is a big difference between the two, which is why i don't really cares what happens to the 'kiddy diddlers', as you put it. I fear I would end up in jail if someone did anything like that to either of my kids. I have no sympathy for them. However, I guess since we can't keep them locked up, they do need some place to go, so a halfway house of some sort could work, and be cheaper than prison, and easier to monitor.
-
There were cases where churches were getting shut down, because according to the health department regs, you needed to have all sorts of fancy equipment to feed x amount of people. The churches couldn't afford to spend $50,000 upgrading thier kitchens so they could feed the homeless, so they had to stop. The supposed reasoning was for the health concerns of those being fed. I guess if they starve, they can't get food poisoning.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 10:02 AM) I think the idea is that you can never really rehab or reform a pedophile/ child molester. They are always going to have those urges and desires. Keeping them away from children is the best way to prevent them from doing anything again. This doesn't really bother me one bit. Don't molest children and be convicted of a crime, and you won't have a problem. Or, if its that big of a problem in Miami, move elsewhere. If you happened to be 17, and having sex with your 17 year old girlfriend, you could be jailed as a sex offender. Just remember, there are some people who get this classification that don't really deserve it. Most do, though, and I have no problem with them having a tough life.
