The SIU-Holy Cross first round game had some of the best defense I have ever seen. The players on both teams had to have collapsed when they got back to their rooms after that. And it was defense without all the cheap shots, and groans at the refs when you actually get called for a foul. I haven't seen all the games, but the ones I did see were all pretty good. And the end of the OSU game, wow.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Mar 17, 2007 -> 07:59 PM) He keeps jumping back at every strike over the inside part of the plate and the opposition is beginning to pound him inside pitch after pitch. Kinda sounds like Frank Thomas his last 6 or so years with the Sox.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 15, 2007 -> 02:33 AM) and that would mean ARod's playing SS again after a 4 year period of time away from it. Going back won't be just like magic. I see KW making a run if he does opt out, but I'm not sure he'd give in to the demands that ARod wants nor would ARod necessarily feel comfortable here. He'd have to have a nice long chat with Ozzie and the two would have to come to terms with their differences, that's for sure. All Ozzie did was remind him that he was an American and if he played for any of the baseball teams, it should be America's team. Not too much to comes to terms with.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Mar 15, 2007 -> 03:05 PM) I was talking about character. Puckett was, if I recall correctly, a rapist and a wifebeater, with one being alleged and I believe the other was confirmed through police reports. Molitor was a drug addict. That's what I'm talking about: character. I don't use it to base a player but I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of the Hall. And there's nothing to suggest that Rose changed the outcome of a game by gambling on them. On the other hand, he changed the outcome of many games with his bat. You need to get it thru your head that Rose did the one thing all ballplayers know will get them kicked out of baseball. There are signs about it in every clubhouse, they are told about it every spring many times, and it is drilled into them by mlb that if they gamble, they are f***ed. He broke the rule. The one, single rule he had to follow. Why do you have such a chubby about him getting in the hall? He is slime, and you can never believe a word he says since he has been lying to the public for so long. He SAYS he bet on his team to win. How do we really know that? If he bet on them to lose, would you have the same attitude towards him? He doesn't belong anywhere near there, unless he is pushing a broom.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 10:18 AM) It seems the UN could be such a great entity for a number of causes. But they continually trip over their own two feet. Anyone have any suggestions as to what could be done to make them more effective, more trustworthy, and more respected? Well, they lose alot of the respect when they let countries run by dictators on the humar rights committee, and then turn around and claim the US is one of the biggest HR violators. Even if you hate America, you have to see the absurdity in that. But, they try to be 'fair' and include everyone, when everyone doesn't deserve to be included. Their history of peacekeeping missions is also terrible, which leads to all sorts of jokes at their expense. Problem is that most nations don't want to give up control of their soldiers to another entity. So you often have sub-par people available for the peacekeeping tasks, or people with no clear mandidate as to what to do. Every time we hear of UN soldiers raping girls in Sudan, or see a UN ambulance being used by Hamas, it just furthur erodes any semblance of respectability they ever had. There is also way too much money at stake in all the various offices and programs. Very public accounting could possibly help these, or even awarding non-monetary help instead. It really is almost too f***ed up to fix, and you may be better off just starting over. but that wouldn't work either, because America would be screwed even more in whatever new entity came about. COULD it be a great entity? I suppose so. But as it is, they stink.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 06:09 AM) I wonder if Saddam to recommend them for Il to open an account like the old referral credit union membership system? http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion...1,3280056.story I read this online last night. Too funny. And sad.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 02:29 PM) Why don't you ask Devery Taylor's victims? Gee, can you add a little more cattiness there? -
I just heard Lance on the Score earlier tonihgt say that he was willing to sit out the year if need be, because 'there is no security in $7.2 million'. What is he smoking? Sure, it doesn't go as far if you want to buy Ferraris, but how can you not take $7 mil and make yourself set for life? And of course, continuing to couch it all in the 'disrespect' mode, while saying that is wasn't about the money. If he sits out a whole year, i don't care HOW much 'training' he does, he won't be the same with a year of no hitting and not playing at game speed.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 07:23 AM) Hey Alpha, I know we all chime in here from time to time, but remember, this is a DEM THREAD ONLY, which means they get to s*** on whatever they want without reprocussion. It's a place to hide! Yeah, I know. I'm done here.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 11, 2007 -> 03:38 PM) The example is not the Republicans and CNN or ABC, they make plenty of effort to find some sort of balance. The comparison would be to the Republicans holding a debate on Air America radio. The Dems will gain a lot more benefit from finally getting the rest of the media to acknowledge that Fox is a partisan outfit that makes no effort to be anything other than a pro-Republican channel than they will by going on Fox and having them bash the Dems like they did when Fox hosted a Dem. debate in 2003. random link to blog with summary of that event. Fox also reportedly cut away from the debate before the debate that they were hosting was actually over, giving time to their talking heads to begin dissecting it. The first person they had on, who they had to cut away from the actual debate to hear from, was Bill Bennett. No report on how much Bennett had riding on that debate. We have Fox's record from the last debate of making the Dems look bad every way they could. We have Fox still giving air time to Ann Coulter last week. We have Fox making up a story to try to make Sen. Obama look bad. And that's all just in the last couple weeks. The Republicans wouldn't have given a debate to Air America, and the Dems should treat Fox the same way. It is a partisan outlet that does everything they can to make the Dems look bad, and that is how they should be treated. Ok, so the banner said Democrat instead of Democratic. oooooh, that cuts deep. As for the cutting away early, that is bull. I will find you the link complete with transcript that i read yesterday, as soon as I can find it. They did not cut away early. As for who Fox has on AFTER the debate, why does that matter? As for Fox maknig Obama look bad, he seems to be doing a bit of that without Fox's help. Yes, so far all his missteps have been minor, but Fox didn't tell him to be pals with rezko, or have his blind trust not-so blind. Face it, this is just poor excuses for dropping out of a debate because of the fringe elements b****ing and moaning. As for 'controversial questions', if they can't stand up to Juan Williams, how are they gonna talk to the Palistinians?
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 11, 2007 -> 02:44 PM) Did ya read the word "Excuse"? There's no good reason at all for the Dems to have Fox News and only Fox News host one of their debates. They might as well have Hastert moderate. The Nevada folks were pretty desperately searching for a way out of the debate, and Ailes gave them something they could use as an excuse. Yes, there is. The Dem guy himself said it in the original article, that if they were going to succeed in getting elected, they needed to reach a wider audience instead of preaching to the choir. When CNN hosts a debate, isn't it CNN, and not also MSNBC and CSPAN? It is one debate, and they just couldn't stand up to the outcry from the nutroots that they would actually have to turn on Fox to watch a debate. Do you think the moderator would stand up there and throw a few one-liners at the candidates between questions? Should the Republicans now not debate unless it is co-hosted by someone other than CNN or ABC? That is just a lame excuse to cave in to the fringe of the party because, as with all fringe elements, they are the loudest.

I found myself yelling that very line at the TV during games alot last year.

Yes, his HBO specials were top notch. He had a TV show for a bit also, but can't remember the name of it. It's too bad he chose to end his life due to illness. That tends to play hell with life insurance benefits, if he had any.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2007 -> 03:13 PM) Looks like the higher-ups in Nevada are even smart enough to use the Dem-bashing by Ailes as an excuse to do what they should have done anyway. Nevada pussy-Democrats can't take a joke? "I'll take my debate and go home! Waaaaaa!" Pluueeeease. Grow a sack, will ya? If they can't handle some snark from Ailes, how are they gonna handle partisan debate in the house? Or all the garbage that comes up during a campaign? The pussification of America continues.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 9, 2007 -> 01:12 PM) And how many posts did we see in the Al Gore thread calling him a hypocrite? Go back and read it, eagle-eye. I mentioned Newt's hypocrisy when comparing his to Al. Nice try.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 9, 2007 -> 10:13 AM) Yeah, they can get freaking huge and will charge you. Serious stuff. I almost hit one once while golfing on AZ. I had no idea what the hell that was, looked like a pig, but jumped like a grasshopper when my ball went whizzing by its head. it wasn't there when I started to swing, but was there when my worm-burner went screaming down the fairway. All in all a very interesting experience.

The Al Gore discussion, split from GOP/DEM

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 11:41 PM) You do realize he's buying from his own companyn with real dollars that cost him real $$? It's like saying that EvilMonkey doesn't support the printing industry because he owns a printing company. Isn't owning a green company important? NO, a more accurate description would be for me purchasing outside bindry services from a company I own for the print company that I own. he is moving money from one pocket to another. Tax credits for green energy, a lifting of his liberal-guilt for buying credits, and a shift of that money to the carbon credit company he owns. Stock goes up in the carbon co, his net worth goes up, he gets good pr for trying to be carbon neutral, and in reality, it didn't end up costing him a thing. And did you even look at the current holdings list for his company? There wasn't much 'green' on there. It's not TRYING to paint the guy as a hypocrite, he is. -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 05:54 PM) And to highlight how screwed up the system is, if the Doc doesn't do the extra tests, and there happens to be something serious, a jury is going to award the patient $$$$ in a malpractice suit. I've heard Doctors tell that at least 15% or more of their tests are ordered as a CYA. So, maybe some lawsut reform would go a long ways towards ending needless tests and increasing medical costs, eh? Stop needless tests for CYA stuff, keep costs down a bit and so on. but I guess the trial lawyers wouldn't stand for that, would they?

The Al Gore discussion, split from GOP/DEM

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 10:43 PM) maybe mr_genius and EM will share their bills as well and we'll see how we all stack up against big ol' hypocritical Al. You may take the prize. I'm replacing bulbs with compact fluorescents a room at a time or as the incandescents blow. I'll probably have to get them all in and then compare the same months in consecutive years to see the savings. I also need to replace the cr@ppy old windows with energy efficient ones but they are crazy expensive to redo an entire house. Wife pays the home bills, so no idea what that is. But on my 2400 SQFT store, my electric bill is less than $300. And that is with 7 computers on for 12 hours per day, 4 copy machines on 12 hours per day, a power hungry direct-to-plate system, an AB Dick press, 2 laser printers, a Dell server, stereo, space heater for my always-cold designer and numerous bindry pieces, all electrical. And FWIW, I never said he wasn't using energy saving methods, etc. i said that the buying of carbon credits is just plain bull, ESPECIALLY since he buys them from his own company. Nice how noone responded to that little bit of info there, just went right on by that, as if it didn't matter at all. Nope, nothign for Al to gain personally by people going green, nothing at all. Move along, nothing to see here, it's always different. -
I think Scooter should get the same punishment that Sandy Berger got.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 12:53 AM) Bit of a damning article; Damning to who? That the Bears make players honor their contracts? I love how it tries to make the Bears as the bad guys for making players stick to the deals THEY MADE. If you want the 'security' of a long term deal (actually security of the signing bonus), then you have to deal with thre fact that you may be comparatively underpaid in the last year or two of your deal.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 07:10 AM) Its kinda interesting because from an economic standpoint this is an absolute truth: The cheaper something is, the more of it that will get used. The uninsured aren't going to use as much healthcare, because they economic incentive not to do so, while the insured, will use way more, because they have no incentive not to. http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/hea...,1,236737.story That is one of the reasons that many insurance plans are trying to use a form of medical savings account. My wife works for a major insurance company, and our plan is something like $2000 per year, no dedectible or questions asked. After that, we are on our own for the next $2000. After that, it is a complex formula (for me!) that basically breaks down to 80/20 for most things. We rarely use the $2000, and up to $1000 of it can carry over to the next year. But it also caused me to look around. I had injured my shoulder and looked for a new doc after I moved. I found one by my house, and one right across the street from where I work. So I tried the work one since it would be easier to just get away for 15 minutes for a visit than to try and leave early and see the one at home. It turns out that an office visit at the work one was $250!!! For 15 minutes of stuff that mostly his nurse did. Not happy. I called, and the one by my house was $50. Guess where I go now? The insured often feel as if it isn't their money, so who cares how much it costs, but that lack of oversight is what contributes to rising health care premiums. We have $3000 heading into this year, and I an gonna use it all this time, going to get my knee checked again. I fear replacement will be needed sometime in the not too distant future. But I am gonna call around first, at least for the initial visits.

Bill to improve conditions at Military Hospitals

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 6, 2007 -> 01:42 PM) If I had to handicap it, I would bet on Condi. She is one of the few left from the old group, plus Bush would have a chance to go down in history as putting both the first female and the first minority into the VP slot. Yeah, let's see the Dems try to block that one. What, is she not black enough? or woman enough? Oh boy, I can just see the spin on the 'no' votes now. Would NOW stand behind Rice, or sacrafice her for their preferred party's goals? Would the NAACP support the move, or does being Republican make someone 'not black enough'? THAt would be an interesting situation.
