  1. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 07:22 AM) BTW if this was an attempt at poking a little fun at Dems, IF it was an attempt? Ok, I guess I'll keep my day job.
  2. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 07:00 AM) And my local Korean Presbyterian Church has a similar credo that involves strengthening the Korean community in the area. Churches minister to a specific audience and strive to improve that community and the lives of those members. My Church speaks of belief in one "Catholic and Apostolic Church". We try and improve the lives of Catholics, why a separate Catholic and non Catholic? My employer asks it's members to recite a Oath that begins A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, etc. Why just say Scout? You may feel it is wrong for a Church to minister to, and market to, a specific audience. I don't see a problem with that. If their Mission is to strenghten the Black community in their area, then God bless them and my prayers are with them along with all God's Ministries around the world. And, at least in my book, religion is one area I have zero criticism of Bush. I believe it is genuine and sincere, unlike many of the other candidates. Tex, your scouts don't start off saying "A WHITE scout is Trustworthy, Loyal...", do they? As for preaching to your audience, I wouldn't expect Catholics to preach to Jews, or Muslims to preach to Mormans. But when race comes into it, it is always a double standard. If a church had those same credos with 'white' in them, they would be vilified across the country as the next version of the KKK. As for Bush'es religiosity, I agree that at least it seems genuine, where you can tell that others only see the inside of a church when they are stumping for votes.
  3. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 11:34 PM) The Religion of Baseball I thought the religion of baseball was about hitting gorks, or seeing-eye grounders? Oh, and banging Susan Sarandon.
  4. I would respect the bill more if it wasn't a knee-jerk reaction to an article. Especially since Obama is running already, anything he does will be looked at as an attempt to win votes, whether it is or not. Still, if there are problems at the military hospitals that can be fixed, they should be fixed.
  5. QUOTE(shoota @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 10:09 PM) Compact fluorescent bulbs. I forget the numbers, but they last longer and cost much less to operate than regular bulbs. If the ceiling fans are turned off and on alot, these might not be the best investment. The extra 'life' is for continuous use. The surge from turning on takes a bigger toll on the bulbs, and the more on cycles the bulb goes thru, the faster it will burn out. PLus if the unit has older wiring and/or circuit breakers, the power to the bulb might not be as 'smooth' as you might like for a longer life. Good luck.
  6. With all the critricism that Bush gets for being so religious, how come noone has really brought up Obama's church and his religion at all? Imagine if the following credo was for a white church: 1. Commitment to God 2. Commitment to the White Community 3. Commitment to the White Family 4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education 5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence 6. Adherence to the White Work Ethic 7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect 8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness” 9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the White Community 10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting White Institutions 11. Pledge allegiance to all White leadership who espouse and embrace the White Value System 12. Personal commitment to embracement of the White Value System Substitute black for white, and you have TRinity United Church of Christ, Obama's church. The paragraph that preceedes the list is this one: “Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts: " Why are there two sets of ethics, one white and one black?
  7. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) yeah i'd be surprised to find republicans in virginia too... ya know, the state that was so closely contested in the last election and was BARELY won by the democrat... and the state that has been red for the last few presidential elections... wait... that means there have to be a LOT of republicans huh? yeah... thought so... thought so what, that you are being a little prick nitpicky by harping on my lame attempt at humor instead of the real life humor in a peace-loving Democrat starting a fight with someone they didn't know and tracked down from a website over their political beliefs? Yeah, that must be it.
  8. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,253400,00.html I am suprised he managed to find 2 Republicans in Virginia.
  9. http://www.wsmv.com/news/11048353/detail.html WSMV.com Cabbie Runs Down Students Religious Argument Leaves One Hospitalized POSTED: 5:01 pm CST February 18, 2007 UPDATED: 7:12 pm CST February 18, 2007 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A local cab driver allegedly tried to run over two customers after a fight over religion became heated. The incident happened early Sunday morning on the Vanderbilt campus and left one man hospitalized and a cab driver arrested, said police Two students visiting from Ohio were coming from a bar downtown when they got into an argument with their driver over religion, said police. After they paid the driver he allegedly ran them down in a parking lot. Ibrihim Ahmned, of United Cab, was arrested and charged with assault, attempted homicide and theft. One of the passengers, Andrew Nelson, managed to outrun the cab but Jeremy Invus was taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious injuries, said police. Ahmed has been convicted of misdemeanors including evading arrest in a motor vehicle and driving on a suspended license, said police. Ahmed was charged with theft because police said the license plate on his cab was listed as stolen. His bond is set at $300,000. ________________ At least he got his fare BEFORE he decided to start Deathrace 2007. I don't think fratboys are worth that many points, especially drunk ones. I wonder what religion they were arguing about? Hmmmm.
  10. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 02:35 PM) He had every right to say what he did and for what he said he also has every right to take the heat for saying what he did. What he said was wrong, in my opinion, but he was fully entitled to saying it and he's fully entitled to the repercussions that will come from it. Kinda like the Dixie Chicks a while back.
  11. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 05:04 AM) Its sad though really, if it was the other way around the republicans on this board would be saying "Only democrats would stoop this low" I really fail to see how someones political party has anything to do with how pathetic a certain individual is. You are right, if it were reversed, someone would claim that the dems were behind it. And that would immediately be followed by a flood of comments from Balta, Rex and LCR similar to the one I posted. But that someone would not have been me.
  12. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 18, 2007 -> 07:32 PM) N-word? Perhaps I missed something here. What are you talking about? I don't think the bloggers mentioned anything on that scale. My link as you see is from Yahoo, off AP, in the national political news. sounds pretty mainstream to me. This media conspiracy thing is ridiculous. Without going into details on her blog, she has catagories called 'Impeache the f***er' and'censure the f***er', surely not the type of language needed for someone representing a Presidential candidate. She is also being accused of 'cleaning' her archives by some of the very bloggers who first noted her history.
  13. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Feb 18, 2007 -> 06:14 PM) dont you love how republicans come up with things like this. ive seen this story float around at least 4 times now. Way to assume that it was a Republican that started that. No need for some evidence or anything. The only enemies Hilary has are Republicans, I guess, and only they can stoop so low as to create stuff like this. Yeah.
  14. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) Its become an interesting new feature of politics, and now with our Presidential campaigns underway, its coming more to the forefront there as well: bloggers as "personalities". A couple of Edwards' campaign bloggers resigned this week, after being called bigots by conservatives for some of their remarks. I wonder how this part of campaigning, likely to take hold this cycle, will effect the race. Have you read any of the stuff those two have written? I think you would have probably come to the same conclusion. Those two write for shock value, and seem shocked that it came back to bite them in the ass.
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) Kevin Millwood (31yo): 5 years, $60M +15M signing bonus (RANGERS) AJ Burnett (29yo): 5 years, $55M +6M signing bonus (BLUE JAYS) Jarrod Washburn (31yo): 4 years, 37.5M (MARINERS) Matt Morris (31yo): 3 years, $27.5M +2M signing bonus (GIANTS) Esteban Loaiza (34yo): 3 years, $21M +3M signing bonus (ATHLETICS) Kenny Rogers (41yo): 2 years, $18M (TIGERS) As of the All Star break last season Mark Buehlre was younger and a much better pitcher than all of these guys. One bloated contract probably shouldn't set market value for players but it almost always does, hell Jim Hendry is being blaimed for a lot of this after giving Howry and Eyre their insane contracts that same offseason. And the only one in that group making more than $11 million was Millwood. $11 milions would have put mark ahead of all of them. Yes, he is better than them, but that much better? I like Mark, but he had better be the old Mark if he wants to get better than $11 million at years end. If he performs like Ted Lilly again, he will be lucky to get that.
  16. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 10:45 AM) Kevin Millwood had already signed his $55 mil over 5 contract, so I'd say $11 per for 3 looked pretty low at the time. Anyone else get an inflated contract around then, or just Millwood from that jackass in Texas? One outsized contract should not set the market rate. At the AS break, Mark started sucking, and was going down hill. Maybe he didn't like the 3 years, but I don't think $11 milliion was lowballing him. It may not have been an attempt to lick his balls, but it wasn't hitting him in them either.
  17. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 10:24 AM) If 3/33 is correct, then the Sox were lowballing Buehrle in years and money. By comparison to the contracts handed out now, yes. But at the ASB? $11 mil a year was pretty good coin at that time.
  18. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 08:51 AM) Tim Hardaway hates Jay Mariotti. Who doesn't?
  19. With all the teams handing out $10 million+ contract this season, how many of them are left or have moeny left to do so next season? Yeah the Yankmees and the Mets have cash coming out their wazoo, but somewhere down the line, the teams are gonna run out of money.
  20. Had that forwarded to me by my father-in-law 3 or 4 weeks ago, one of my wife's buddies a month before that, and the parents of a friend about 2 monthss before that. Sooooooooo old, no laugh.
  21. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Feb 12, 2007 -> 08:48 PM) I like to think that there are 3583 members you'd like to drink with even less than me. I voted for you. I just think the screen name is a classic.
  22. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Feb 12, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) congrats for having the most annoying poker player in your avatar besides Helmuth I dunno, that guy that has the wierd lip and quacks is pretty damn annoying as well.
  23. Better to be a has-been than a never-was or never-will-be.
  24. Kenny Rodgers will not win 17 games again, and remember that Verlander was hurt a few times at the end of last year. To expect a repeat performance after his heavy workload in his rookie year may be a bit optimistic.
