  1. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 02:43 PM) So what do you do for the least of New Orleansians? Let's say someone's got a low wage, low skill job making in the 7-8 dollar an hour range in the New Orleans area and is renting. Chances are the person is just barely making enough to get by as it is, and may be in such a low income bracket that these flood prone houses or apartments are his only affordable spot he can find. How do we make sure these folks are taken care of? That's my concern. Why do 'we' have to take care of them? The government shouldn't be a soup kitchen or a landlord. It is charged with protecting its citizens, but I don't nkow where it says it has to provide me a home and 3 squares a day. You want to help? Fine, go help, donate money, time etc. Millions of churches, groups and people, including me, have. That's where charity should end.
  2. I wonder if we were to go beat Robertson to death with a baseball bat if he and his followers would consider that divine retribution for his stupid comments?
  3. If Sharon suddenly pulls thru and makes a complete recovery, would that also be an act of God? That would mean that Robertson would be p3ownd by God, or whatever that stupid word is. I wonder if he would admit that on his show? Hmmmm.
  4. http://www.c-span.org/search/basic.asp?Res...xt=murtha+moran The C-span video is here, but is shows an exchange between Murtha/Moran (the Senator sponsoring Murtha's town hall forum) and a recently returned vet who took him to task with some of his statements. Murtha then chose to go on to the next question without really saying anything. I believe the exchange is at the 34:30 point in the video. Text of the exchange is : After that, Murtha was speechless while Moran simpy moved on to the next question
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 02:44 AM) Should we expect every single American to purchase insurance to protect him or herself from situations which should have been considered very unlikely, like the complete failure of the levees around New Orleans? Despite levees being there, the mere fact that they are so far below sealevel and surrounded by higher water should make that event FORSEEABLE. Quite predictable. I believe many of the stories stressed that there had been warnings before. People in CA SHOULD have to have some kind of earthquake insurance. The idiots that have their homes perched on the side of a cliff and have them slide into the ocean every time it rains should be forced to cover that themselves as well.
  6. I thought the Kilo decision locked that one up. Maybe he shold take it up with the Supremes?
  7. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 6, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) If it's inevitable, see how easy it would be to insure your house against it. My parents bought a house that according to the Army Corp of Engineers was located in a flood plain, and were required to purchase flood insurance BEFORE they could even buy it. Stuff like that shlould be manditory for locals such as NO where the likelyhood of just such an occurance is very high. Can't afford it? Then don't live there and don't expect the government to pick up your tab when s*** happens. Personally, I wish they would just raze the whole cesspool and make them build on higher ground.
  8. Tex, they didn't report that they thought they were alive, they reported "MINERS ALIVE!" How about a few minutes to verify with a mining company official? Newspaper guys are the worst. Five more minutes wouldn't have mattered in filing their stories.
  9. While you can quote statistics all day long about hom many people cannot afford insurance, how many of them 'can't afford it' because they are only in their mid 20's, and they would rather have that $600 a month going to a new BMW instead of insurance? 'Can't afford it' is often simply a choice of what do you want more. Yeah, if the choice is food or insurance, I think you take the mac n cheese. But if your choice is a fancier apratment downtown, or vacations, etc, well then, you don't belong in that catagory. As for a 'right to healt care', when the taxpayers start paying for med school, maybe they can get free med care. As bad as the current system is, it is still better than socialized medicine.
  10. http://news.pajamasmedia.com/2005/12/19/67...Will_Retu.shtml Abrmoff was an equal opportunity scumbag. If he talks, ALOT of people, on both sides, are going down.
  11. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 04:47 AM) Whats's sad about trying to save money? Friday weddings are a great idea, Sunday weddings suck. We were married the Friday after Thanksgiving and all our guests thought it was a great idea. Most people have the day off already and there's not much to do on that day and they still had a full weekend to recover from the hangover. The sad part is you are spending $20,000+ on a wedding, and worried about maybe another $1000 by switching the wedding to a Friday. I get these same people in my shop sometimes ordering wedding invitations. They want custom everything, then balk when I show them the price. They try to point out that in the book they can order them for $300, so I suggest that they order those instead. "But I want this special ridged paper in my color with the gold foil stamping on it" Oh well. I'll bet her wedding dress cost well into 4 figures, and she didn't bat an eyelash. The Friday after turkey day is a slightly different animal, as most non-retail people are not working that day anyway.
  12. The sad part is they probably picked Friday and the time to SAVE MONEY. I had a coworker do the same thing, telling me that it was 50% less than having it on a Saturday.
  13. MIAMI -- Florida State University's No. 1 defensive player, linebacker AJ Nicholson, has been suspended by the team. The move comes after an alleged rape incident Wednesday night. No charges have been filed better put a hold on all those bets..lol
  14. Maybe the reporter just had a 'bone' to pick.
  15. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?Stor...23-010515-8477r Yes, it says UP TO 1/3rd, but it also points out "several U.N. agencies continue to refuse to disclose details of their relief expenditure in spite of earlier pledges of transparency by senior officials. " Given their history, 1/3rd might be on the low side.
  16. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4561576.stm Apparently only the UK is doing what they said they would do. What is the 'punishment' for not making their stated goals?
  17. College student wins $46-million Florida lottery E-mail This Article Printable Version TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Christmas has come early for one Florida college student. Lottery officials announced today that 20-year-old April Martin-- a student at Indian River Community College-- has claimed the most recent Florida Lotto jackpot. That jackpot is worth $46-million. Martin's ticket was the only one to match all six Florida Lotto numbers selected in Wednesday's drawing. April Martin said her father actually bought the ticket during his weekly grocery shopping. He gave it to her when he discovered it had the winning numbers. April Martin said she will split the winnings with her four siblings and her mom. Each sibling will get a new car, and Martin said she also plans to buy a house and pay for college with the winnings. Martin said her father chose her to divvy up the family's good fortune because of her fairness fair is fair i guess....but to be given the winning ticket AFTER the drawing and then not buy anything for the old man is just wrong.
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2005 -> 02:14 AM) BSA? Boy Scouts? Business Software Alliance. They go around and 'audit' companies for software violations. You get a notice that someone squeeled on you, and they threaten you with lawsuits up your ass if you don't let them in, and then even more suits and/or fines if you are discovered to have a copy of any software you can't prove you purchased. But if you had an office with 4 computers, you would need to have purchased one version, or 'seat', for each computer you run it on, or else it is a violation. These guys are far from boy scouts. http://www.bsa.org/usa/
  19. Just a thought, but maybe the companies are fearing that if they invest the billions into developing the drug, that it will just be taken away from them to help all the people around the world with AIDS, thereby losing the immense 'value' that they should get from developing such a drug. You just know that you would have the UN clamoring for the evil drug companies to simply donate their new wonder drug to all the poor nations in Africa who simply couldn't afford to purchase it. And even here at home the various AIDS groups would be demanding that it be rpovided for free to people. How long until our knee-jerk government simply takes it away and does just that? Not saying they are right, but that it could be the reason.
  20. Almost as bad as the BSA audits. Where do they get the authority anyway?
  21. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 24, 2005 -> 08:00 AM) With less pressure on Morneau and Ford(and company) lower in the lineup, a better top of the order for Minnesota, and almost an undoubtedly improved pitching staff, I view them as a very scary team next year. I agree with you there. Ford is a pretty good player who went thru his sophmore slump. I can see him having a pretty big year, along with Morneau, not having to be the big guys this year.
  22. I got the WS one finally, my number was a high one. 9643 of 10,000. I love it!
  23. I am a little disappointed. I have been waiting for a "No soup for you!" joke from SOMEONE.
