  1. Even when the Pizza was Connie's at the games, it was bad pizza...it wasn't real Connie's and tasted nothing like the real thing...if anything, it gave Connie's a bad name...because pizza at the park sucked, and I don't care what brand it was supposed to be or who made it...it was bad.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) Yes, message boards are horrible places for topics like these. It's not that it's a bad place, because it's obviously the perfect place, but it's the asking of the same questions every year, which never get answered that make it a complete waste of time. Like this thread. You will get a range of opinions, arguments, disagreements or agreements...but no definitive or real answers...just a lot of speculation. This question has been asked about Buehrle, on this message board, every year since he's arrived.
  3. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) I take that as a no, no comeback in sight? I just threw a towel behind my back, caught it, spit my gum in the air and slapped it aside while saying, "Deliver that...Milkman!"
  4. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 02:27 PM) I understand your view, but I think we just disagree. As to the pessimism, I don't expect much from me this season. I actually don't think I've been nearly as pessimistic in the last year or more, and I expect good things this season. Do you expect Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig to make a comeback? Oh, wait, he can't...he's dead.
  5. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 02:08 PM) Yay for webanimation that tries to make a factual point ridiculous! Its as if the person who wrote the script for the girl in red, actually doesnt believe that position and was trying to purposefully look stupid! If you cant see the difference between Iraq (unilateral action) and UN (international action), it just isnt worth discussing. Once again, I think if you looked at Iraq in terms of "ends justifying the means" then its one thing, but to argue that you couldnt be against Iraq because it was based on misleading or blatantly false evidence because you support international action in Libya, is preposterous. In fact the reason that person made a webanimation instead of debating is that hed get rocked: Did you know that there were 17 UN resolutions? Yes Did any UN resolution authorize what is commonly known as a NFZ? No Was the US acting within the scope of the UN resolutions during Iraq? No This isnt about Obama, because well, it was the French and British who asked the UN to intervene. This isnt about Iraq, because well, the UN never authorized the type of force used by the US. The difference is so apparent, that anyone who acts like its similar is either a) completely disingenuous to attack Obama or B ) has no clue about Iraq or Libya. Iraq- US action that went beyond the scope of the UN mandate, based on faulty logic and bad intelligence. Saddam was a bad guy, no one denies that, but the main argument for war was that Iraq posed a legitimate threat against the US. Libya- US action is limited to UN mandate, based on UN security council resolution. No argument being made about US national security or that Libya poses any significant threat to the US. Its almost like arguing that if I like White Sox, I must like the Red Sox because they both have "Sox" in the name and play baseball. Unfortunately the facts would show that the Red Sox are a bunch of tools and the White Sox rule. That we can all agree on. That's the only thing we can agree on. Taking that cartoon seriously is akin to taking TDS as "news", a joke in the cartoon itself, which was funny.
  6. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 01:51 PM) Obama is cool and awesome. Hahahah, this is awesome.
  7. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 12:40 PM) Have you seen Detroit's schedule in both August and September? After looking at that It wouldn't surprise me if they hang around in the first four months that they would win the division. Almost all of their games in a two month period are against crappy teams. Never mind that the Twins have an easy schedule in both August and September too. The Sox and Twins have to play either Boston or NY once in that two month stretch. Detroit plays neither. The advantage of an easy schedule that you guys make the Sox out to have isn't there, because Detroit and Minnesota have a similar 2nd half schedule to the Sox. So basically, what your saying with a whole bunch of words is: The Sox have to play out the season and see who wins the division?
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) That's the thing. As a best case scenario, I seriously doubt attendance will be up anything more than marginally this year. Economic times are not lending themselves to people going to the ballpark. If the Sox win big this year they will see the attendance bump next year, otherwise I believe it will be a tough go Based on economic conditions, I doubt it would matter in terms of attendance, but that said, they have to go about their business and try to put a competitive product on the field people will pay to see. Otherwise, like any business, if you aren't going to bother trying, you may as well close up shop.
  9. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 12:34 PM) I see the everyday line-up playing the last week of spring training was a myth. Aside from 3b, that is the everyday lineup.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) I don't think that's a problem at all - I agree with that philosophy, when we are talking about people who have been in the workplace for a while. If some person has 10+ years of experience, I really could care less whether or not they have a degree, or what it was in. Its a minor factor at that level. Now, if you are looking to high someone more junior, then obviously their education is key. I tend to favor a hybrid strategy with hiring in IT. Bringing in a bunch of young folks with just a degree or mininal experience, who are cheap and who you can train quickly into your company's way of doing things... and mixing in some experienced hands who know the industr(ies) they are coding for. For the former, degree and academic training are everything. For the latter, it is minimal to nothing. It's a long standing problem in IT from the point of view of the college graduate (is what I meant), especially in my area. I work with firewalls and perimeter security, and getting into this area of focus was pure luck as I had no prior experience with firewalls. Nobody will even think about hiring a security engineer without experience, and there are no "junior" level security positions...at least there have been none of them at any company I've ever worked for...and being able to get experience is next to impossible unless someone decides to teach you. I don't necessarily disagree with it, it is what it is...experience trumps education. But that said, it's a problem for college graduates in the IT industry...because it's one of the few industries that really doesn't care about college degrees...and it never really has. Counter example, you'll never meet a dentist, doctor, chemist, etc...without a college degree.
  11. What's going on in Libya has been a long time coming... The reason I support the action in Libya is simple: These bastards tried to kill Marty and Doc back in 1985 over a box of used pinball machine parts. October 25th, 1985 to be exact...shortly after 1:15am. So screw them.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 01:47 PM) I remember when I wouldn't trade this guy for a in-prime Ty Cobb. Oh prospects. I am so surprised he never became at least serviceable. Had a great eye at the plate, not a lot of strikeouts, fast, good fielder. If this is true, you should be banned from baseball. And in-prime Cobb had 410+ batting averages. Do not pass go, go directly to FAIL.
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 11:47 AM) We have the easiest schedule in the AL, September being the easiest month. If there was ever a time to go for it, this is the season. Based on last years results, maybe... But that' just not how baseball works. If you end up playing a bunch of easy teams when they're on white hot streaks, so much for that...and I've seen it happen enough times to know that "strength of schedule" really means, luck of the draw. Just as easily, you could play a stretch of "contenders" that are on losing streaks, which equate to some free wins.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) I can't speak to comcast...but the big benefit of renting them from DirecTV rather than buying your own is that when (not if) they crap out after a couple years, DirecTV pays for the replacement, not me. In about 8 years with DTV, I've probably had 4 receivers crap out. Maybe more. That's because the receivers you rent from these places, Comast/Directv, etc., are garbage, low quality dvrs. I have a TiVo series 2 thats 9 years old, and it still works. My brother still uses it. The ONLY advantage of these rental receivers is that you can be lazy...and that's about it. Also, don't forget that any receiver you buy will come with a warranty. I have 2 Comcast dvrs, and I was previously with directv, their receivers are all garbage in comparison to a TiVo. They're slower (by a lot) and can do less...I miss my TiVo very very much. :/
  15. You know what, f*** this tax law and f*** any of you defending it, and furthermore, f*** the government worried about piddly little people like us and mom and pop shops paying sales tax on Internet sales... When meanwhile... General Electric (GE), reported worldwide profits of $14.2 billion, and said $5.1 billion of the total came from its operations in the United States. Its American tax bill? Zero. In fact, G.E. claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion. For more: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/25/business...tml?_r=2&hp
  16. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 04:28 PM) This is what many have been suggesting since this law came about. One advantage that I just thought of that brick and mortar stores have over Amazon is interest-free financing. It's something I always get when I buy a big ticket item. About a month ago I had to buy a dryer and got 18-months no interest from Lowes. I do the same thing when I buy a computer or a TV. Signing up for all these credit cards can f*** up your credit rating.
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) Yes, well, that's the thought... We can access through the web (outlook web access - aka, the webmail login for exchange that we're using) through any website. But when I go to put those credentials into some of the mail programs it always fails. The mail programs use different protocols than OTA/web, which is always going through port 80/443, this is a front end, which then goes to the exchange server via the protocols it understands. Actual email programs on a computer/phone will use exchange, imap, pop, protocols, which are completely different ports. This is probably blocked.
  18. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 06:43 PM) If Chrome had noscript and adblock plus, I'd be all over it. It doesn't though, unfortunately which is a no go for me. It has adblock+ and noflash, both work great. It doesn't, however, have noscript...but honestly, I dont need it that bad, I don't browse random sites blindly these days, so the protection is just overkill. Noscript is really only necessary if a person tends to browse to random links/sites, otherwise it can become an annoyance. You can disable all JavaScript in Chrome, if you are that worried about it, and can whitelist certain sites...but you can't whitelist as granularly as noscript allows.
  19. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 01:49 PM) two perfect examples. 1) I needed to get a new bulb for my Rear Projection Mitsubishi TV. Small electronics store (not a Best Buy) in downtown Batavia was the same price as on-line, except for the 7.5% sales tax. Since the need was immediate, I bought the bulb from them, however I now have a spare. Bought that one on-line. 2) This spring I need to get a new filter for the Hot Tub. So I have a choice of going to the local pool supply store in town, or on-line. Again, one's going to charge me tax, the other won't. For most people, a savings of 7$ isn't enough to justify buying online and having to wait, and then taking the chance that what you got is broken and now have to ship it back...for a mere 7$ savings, you could have bought it local, and returned it for a replacement the same day...now you have to wait, and take the time to ship the item back. This holds true for big items, too... I bought my xbox 360 at best buy and when it broke, I brought it back and had a replacement unit in minutes, my friend bought his online and it took weeks to get it back. Local stores have a big advantage still, despite the taxes...people just tend to ignore it.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) Reeeeaaally? I wasnt impressed with my first go-round of Chrome, but the memory thing is a big plus. Firefox's only downfall. With just this page open its taking over 400mb of memory I felt the same way about early versions of Chrome, but their release schedule is relentless to the point nobody can keep up with them. Every 6 weeks, a new version of Chrome is issued...yes, 6 weeks. They're on version 10 now, and version 11 is due out soon. It's come a long way in a short period of time because of their programming/release schedule. Chrome 10 is awesome, and very mature for how young the browser actually is.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 01:01 PM) Well, I'll be God-damned, Chrome blows Firefox out of the water. I told you. The only thing I liked about firefox was the plugin noscript, but the fact that firefox takes up hundreds of megs of memory is annoying. Chrome has plugins now, too, but they aren't as mature as firefox's...yet. Chrome is faster and more memory efficient, and every tab is its own process, so if that tab crashes, everything else is fine. Chrome also sandboxes plugins into their own process, too, so they also can't crash the entire browser.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) I get all of my news from TMZ and The View.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 06:26 PM) 25, but man is there a generational gap. I seriously remember my parents and my friends' parents being pissed at us if we were in the house for 2 hours during our time off from school. Having them tell us to go outside more made me feel like a bum for being outside for only 8-10 hours. Now it's completely acceptable for kids to be inside all day, and then they want a ride to their friend's house two blocks away. And I'm almost 36.
  24. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 04:50 PM) I don't think anybody said he sucks or that he will always suck. The fact is, though, that he hasn't been healthy for this team yet. And yes, a sore rotator cuff is pretty bad news. There is good reason to be angry at him for never being healthy, and plenty of reason to think that he's prone to injury. And you know what, I don't appreciate you calling me out. You bring absolutely nothing in the way of baseball discussion to this board. You've been doing the same to J4L for the last week, and he's been on this board for years having logical arguments. I honestly can't recall a single post of yours that had any relevance or even more than barely made sense. I'll probably get a suspension for this, but you honestly have no basis for mocking the posts of other people on this board when all of yours are pure garbage. You bring nothing to this board, and I imagine nobody would rather see your posts over those of J4L and, I hope, mine. Milkman delivers...again. And Curt Hennig remains dead.

    Job Hunt Thread

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) The interview seemed to go really well. The store manager seemed to really like me, while the GM of the franchise itself was sort of on the fence. The problem I'm faced with at this point is that he (the store manager) made it seem like this was a career choice and not a stepping stone to another job. Most of it is commission based, as you'd expect, but he said the worst anybody in the store made was $45k, and the top person made $80k. My problem isn't with that, but is instead that it is expected that this would be a career choice and I don't really want to live here 5 months from now, let alone 5 years. Perhaps it was idealistic of me to assume that this would be a stepping stone kind of job. I think I would like the job, but I don't know that my heart would be in it knowing that I'd want to leave in 5 months anyways. And?? Don't tell them it's not a career to you, and just a stepping stone...that's not their business, it's your business because it's your life. Use the job as the stepping stone you expected it to be, and do the absolute best you can while you work there (if you end up working there)...that's life in business world. Whatever this company is, keep in mind that it's just a job...you work for witesoxfan inc., period, end of story.
