QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 18, 2015 -> 12:17 AM) My LG G4 just randomly stopped working. I would REALLY like to recover my photos/videos off it and hopefully create a backup file. No idea how I didn't set up an automatic back-up file to be saved to the MicroSD card, I really hate myself for it. It powers on the boot loop, sometimes gets to the ATT logo, and then turns off. So upsetting. As an Android user, don't you use Google Photos or Google Drive? Even I, as an iPhone user use Google Photos/Drive, and all of my photos are backed up there.

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Nov 15, 2015 -> 10:28 AM) I usually rotate phones out once a year, but I'm really liking the 6P more than I though I would. Came over from an iPhone 6. Google services are just so far superior to anything Apple offers. Depends...I use a few Google services, but this isn't true across the board...there are plenty of things Apple does as good or better, and all of this is subjective.

I recall that one baseball movie with Freddie Prinze Jr and the girl that killed herself mentions "The Big Hurt" Frank Thomas at some point...I don't' even remember the name of the movie, though...and I'm too lazy to go to IMDB to find it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 8, 2015 -> 06:13 PM) Ben Carson claims that, while at Starfleet Academy, he successfully rescued the crew of the Kobayashi Maru. This was awesome on a different level awesome.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 01:26 AM) Who cares about the pic? Yes he has an ego. So do all politicos. But he's not a "politico".

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 11:07 AM) Did HTC ever update zoe so that you did not need to hold down for the full time? These are so much better done than what was on htc one m7 because its not out of your normal usage. With zoe it was just like...okay, so it's a video? I'm not even sure it's still a thing, and if it is it never caught on.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 09:33 AM) Any big difference between the iphone 6 and 6s I should know about? It's actually a massive spec bump. The A9 chip is an absolute beast (http://www.anandtech.com/show/9686/the-app...s-plus-review/6), and it's the first iPhone with 2gigs of ram (finally). There are other features such as live photos (stolen from HTC), and force touch that are pretty nice, too...force touch will really shine when games start using it. A lot of people claim it's no better than long press, but that's just thoughtless banter. With force touch, especially in regard to gaming, you can now utilize all of the following to control and/or fire: Quick tap: Fire button 1 Long hold: Fire button 2 Force Touch 1 (hard press) : Fire button 3 Force Touch 2 (harder press): Fire button 4 Anything from controlling and being able to fire 2 different ways with 1 finger, are amazing implications for games.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 27, 2015 -> 10:10 AM) I'm also in a bit of a malaise and indifference. Frank is gone. Paulie is gone. Buehrle is gone. Sale and Abreu don't really have the same affect on me as past players did. I guess that I'm getting old. It's the realization that it was the peak of baseball for us...we were all at the perfect age to have an amazing time through the 05 run...AND, you will likely never see a team as dominating again. Wire to wire. 4 complete games in the ALCS. Timely hitting throughout. 11-1. World series. Even if another team goes far, odds are you never see anything like the 05 Sox again. AND they were beating actual names...it's not like they outpitched a bunch of young kids nobody's ever heard of... It's like how the Jordan Bulls were crushing superstar hall of famers instead of a bunch of over the hill has-beens or never was types like Miami did.

After 2005, I felt like the Sox had accomplished everything I'd ever wanted...and if I'm being perfectly honest, baseball lost a lot of it's sheen to me. At the time it was my favorite sport, and after it happened, I felt like it was over. Both Hockey and Football rank above baseball for me now...and they weren't even in the running prior to 2005. Post 05, I've hardly posted in the actual baseball forums, and almost exclusively posted in Slam...I just don't care anymore. Win or lose, I have just as much fun these days.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) Loving this situation at work: business brought in a cloud app to handle email orders, they of course went with the cheapest option (to be fair it was WAY cheaper). They ask IT to expedite the integration, which according to the vendor is typically 18 weeks, we did it in 6. So of course it wasn't architected well or tested much, which lead to the inevitable complete breakage after like 2 weeks of being in production. The business then runs to us saying we need to fix it, but it's a cloud app so we have 0 control over it. On top of all of that, we turned out to be their biggest customer and are in unchartered territory, and since we are the largest they aren't hosting the service themselves, they are using a 3rd party provider for the hosted servers (and a s***ty cheap one from what we can tell). You get what you pay for that's for sure. That's the issue with a lot of these expedited cloud roll outs...IMO, a lot of these cloud services simply aren't ready for prime time yet...they're works in progress, and while they may be "good enough" for a lot of things, I wouldn't be putting mission critical applications out there just yet...especially when taking security into consideration.

If I could make a recommendation, remember that once it's done, it's done...so if something you think you'd really like is going to make it cost 1-2k more, SPEND IT. 3-4 years down the line, you'll look back at that 1-2k you saved and wish you would have just had it done.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 02:07 PM) I just thought of something. The media is really getting sloppy. There were many reports again of unnamed sources saying Biden was going to announce he was going to run. More and more with Twitter, media outlets are just guessing to say they were first. Ridiculous. They screwed that one up and continue to screw things up more and more. Media today is a joke. The guy decided to not run, which means that initial report was a flat out GUESS. f*** the media right now. Get your damn facts right before you print them. There is no time to do this anymore...and since nobody holds them accountable for being wrong 80% of the time, it doesn't matter...you might be right, and if so, you'd better be right first!

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 10:37 AM) I have one. You can certainly get the same functionality for cheaper. But it is very easy to program and control, and I bought it right after moving in when we felt like we had a lot of money for upgrades. The app kind of sucks and I have trouble connecting it to wifi sometimes, but the thermostat before was such garbage we could not turn off hte programmable schedule and turn on the air when we were painting. Overall 5/5 usability, 3/5 on its claims of changing temps when away. I have no idea why it doesn't find my wifi. I also have one, but not experiencing any of the WiFi issues you are.

Has the country (or the world) really gone this far off the rails?
Y2HH replied to Big Hurtin's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 01:55 PM) Yes, even the world. Back in the day, a village in any part of the world, lived everyday with the threat of invading nomads who would try to pillage, rape and murder everyone. The lucky ones would be taken as slaves. Things like that don't happen anymore. Greg is just a sad paranoid dude. Or a GOAT troll I didn't mean it that way...he was trying to say the world outside the US was safer in reply to my point, and I wasn't speaking about the rest of the world, I was speaking about the US, and he was wrong...to my point, the US is safer than it's ever been. When I said not the world, I was saying I'm not talking about the rest of the world, I'm talking about the US, and the US *IS* safer. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 12:14 AM) Yes but I'm surprised you guys really don't care about the fact this is a small town and at 1 a.m. on a side street nobody is out on the roads and there's no danger of me going slowly thru the stop sign. Also the fact it was the last day of the month and that's kinda fishy needing to raise money for the city. The old rumor that more tickets are issued at the end of the month. I bet in big cities you pull over a guy at 1 a.m. for rolling a stop sign ... I bet a lot of people smart off to the cops and get maced. I could picture some New Yawkers and Chicago South Siders smarting off to cops for actually ticketing them for such a ridiculous violation. Just my take. The key here is it's a small town...cops in small towns usually have nothing better to do, and these types of tickets are common in those areas. I live in Chicago, and these types of tickets are very rare...almost no cop writes them, and they have NO ticket quotas (this is a perpetuated myth). The cops I know don't write these types of tickets because they DO these things, too...and these sorts of "gotcha" tickets are a HUGE reason why people don't like the police...and what do they care, they won't see any of that money anyway, so as long as it's nothing blatantly dangerous, such as rolling through a stop sign when school kids are milling about, they'd give a warning at most. Just pay it and move on...these violations are created to be small enough that you won't fight them with a lawyer, and odds are it was video recorded that you rolled through so you'd likely lose either way. They're a typical poor/middle class money grab...so believe me, Greg, I understand your frustration with it. It's like their cell phone laws...they ban cell phones, NOT because they're dangerous (they are, but I'll get to this point in a minute), but because a LOT of people use them and it's an easy way to write tickets/raise money. Getting back to the reasoning, note that while they ARE dangerous, it's NOT why they made it illegal...as drinking coffee, checking your makeup, or fiddling with your radio are all just as dangerous, but you can't be ticketed for any of them...cell phones were simply an easy target because they're all over the news these days. A recent study actually showed that eating while driving is MORE dangerous than using a phone, by the way...yet it's not illegal...

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 20, 2015 -> 08:12 AM) They also gain experience on how to craft legislation, build coalitions and actually get things done. Look at the Crazy Caucus that's currently blowing up the house--it's a bunch of people with little or no previous experience and only a few years in the House who don't seem to understand how a legislative body is actually supposed to function. State legislative bodies that have term limits face similar problems. Incumbency bias is a problem in its own right, but term limits are a solution that do more harm than good. For the executive branch, it makes a little more sense. For the judicial branch, I'd prefer some long-duration appointment (20-25 years?) that could be renewed rather than appointments for life. I agree to a point...but term limits should still be imposed on them...maybe not 4 years, but 15-20 years would be sufficient. Otherwise you end up with what we have...old decrepit people running the country that are a half-century out of touch. We have some senators/congressmen that are like 95. That's absurd.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 19, 2015 -> 09:19 PM) Term limits for legislatures can be pretty terrible. You constantly have a stream of people with little or no experience and no long term strategy or relationships moving through office. Because the opposite has done us so well in that regard? Experienced legislators simply gain the experience on how to insert sneaky wording and other "pork" into the law without anyone noticing. Maybe the term limits can be longer, but I wouldn't mind term limits imposed on them.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 19, 2015 -> 05:43 PM) Greg's also right there is a huge sense of insecurity from the real middle class...inability to save or lacking the discipline or methodology to invest, lack of confidence in the future, flat wages but luckily inflation hasn't kicked in yet. Largely living paycheck to paycheck with a mortgage possibly underwater and lots of credit card or student loan debt. Corporations are making tons of profit, but still largely sitting on them while hoping for a GOP president to come along and provide them even more advantages and loopholes. When I see posts like this I wonder what "real middle class" means...I consider myself middle class and I'm able to do all of these things, and the only debit I have is my mortgage. I don't know, maybe I'm upper middle class and I don't know it...is there some sort of number that defines these classes?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 19, 2015 -> 05:17 PM) The political scene is so weird. Obama would win the next four elections if he could run another 16 years. Yet his VEEP is despised and it's Hillary the Democrats want to coronate. I don't get it. Why not give it to Biden eight years, then Michelle Obama? I'm being serious. She's a lot more likeable than Hillary and she could prep for the job by getting a spot in Biden's inner circle, maybe secretary of state. But Biden is despised by the Demos despite the fact his boss is beloved, and Hillary the only choice of the elite and the people. Weird. So let me summarize ... Obama? Would keep winning and winning if he could run again. His VEEP?: No chance. Hillary?: In by a landslide. This can be said of many past presidents...and there are a multitude of reasons why we don't allow it. Something that should be done to congressmen, senators, judges, and every other public servant, too.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 19, 2015 -> 04:52 PM) They why is nobody making any headway? I guess the CEO's are doing well. I'm not a CEO, not but I'm also doing quite well. For now, anyway. But that can be said at any point in my career. You're always a day away from losing a job.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 19, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) Not a bad list. I think our lousy economy, however, is the biggest deal right now, though. I think we're in a world of hurt. I just hope we avoid a total collapse of the banking system and all our savings are gone and we'll be on the street once we get laid off by our broke employers. Other economies are far far worse, so if you think it's bad here, you probably wouldn't like much of Europe, China...or basically anywhere else in the world, either.
