QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 11, 2015 -> 02:11 PM) But I can have two modems connected to my carrier on one account, right? I doubt it...that would require them to assign 2 different IP addresses, something I doubt they'd do.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 11, 2015 -> 10:19 AM) Seriously? Why not? I'm not a Trump person, but that doesn't mean others cannot be...despite on a lot of "opinions" I see posted on this board disguised as fact, it's ok for others to like candidates even when you guys don't approve. Something about this mindset bothers me.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 11, 2015 -> 09:05 AM) Dumb question... I have a modem with router for my at home wifi, could I plug another cable modem w/o router into a different cable outlet and not have it interfere with my wifi? I want to plug my work laptop into a modem instead of working off of unreliable wifi. No. The modem has to be programmed to connect to your carrier, you can't just plug any modem into the wall and connect successfully.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 02:05 AM) I said right away in the thread I was guilty. I'm just saying any reasonable cop woulda let me off. Well, with the USA being as "unsafe as it is today", that cop was just doing his part in making it safer. IN THESE PARTS WE CALL THAT BEING OWNED.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 05:28 PM) Guys, most rational people agree with me. America is not safe. America is less safe than 20 years ago. Cmon. Do you guys live in a bubble? No, it's you that lives in the bubble...America is WAY safer today than it was 20 years ago. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 02:03 PM) The world maybe. America? Safer than before? Cmon. You can make any stats fit any argument. America is a dangerous land. No, not the world. The United States of America is safer today than it's ever been. There is no need to "make stats" to fit this argument, it's simply fact. -

I think voting should require 83 forms of ID, a yearly subscription, and a basic competency test. Oh, and it should be taxed.

I'll enter here to chime in with the fact that the world is a safer place today than it's ever been before, DESPITE the massive increase in population. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2015 -> 12:50 PM) Does Comcast still have the "standard channels" and the HD ones? So if you pressed 2, it would take you to CBS but the standard def? Yes.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 2, 2015 -> 02:17 AM) I said I was guilty. Your line is uncalled for. I said I broke the law. The reason I said he "seemed" like a dick is uh, because he did seem like a dick. He mentioned twice my court date like I was going to go to court over this. He said I could mail it in or pay online. I said surprisedly, "I can pay online?" He got prickish and said, "what's that?" while an amazingly bright light was still lighting up my car and my face. I got the sense he was hoping he had a shot at me slurring my words being drunk even tho I don't drink. I just sensed he might be a prick. I tend to agree. The more I think about it, me being chatty instead of letting him be a powerful big shot and control the conversation nailed me. I did think of something later I wish I'd done. After I signed the ticket, I wish I'd said very politely. "Hey I always have had this question. Can I ask you a question?" He'd think I was going to be a prick then. I'd say, "I've always wanted to go along with an officer during his night shift. Do you know if our police department would allow me to go with you or some other officer? How would I go about setting that up?" What would he say? "f*** if I know, man." Or would he be helpful. At any rate I think it'd be an effective come back after getting a ticket for f***ing rolling a stop sign. I mean the more I think of it. I've had no tickets in a year or two at all! I have never broken the law except for speeding years ago. And this prick nails me at 1 a.m for rolling a stop sign?? On a side street? No traffic in sight?? My god. He hit the jackpot making 140 dollars for the city which i've already mailed in. Disagree, my line was called for and delivered.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 03:18 PM) Speedwise you cant beat comcast for internet so thats what I have. I have directv for tv because its awesome. I've had both Comcast and DirecTV over the years, and I don't notice a difference between the two services. A few years ago, I found DirecTV DVR's superior, but that's no longer the case, they're on par with each other now. As for signal quality and image quality, I couldn't tell a difference these days.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 10:43 AM) This is all part of my switch to AT&T from a combo of DirectTV, XFINITY and AT&T. AT&T customer service is nonexistent at this point in time. Wait times are over an hour. I have an outstanding cell phone bill for $ 452 that AT&T can not tell me what it is for only that I owe it. I agree it should be about $250. Not one feature of the AT&T platform performs properly at this time. This is all because I had to leave US Celluar which was awesome in every way shape and form. As is Direct TV. AT&T is once again to large and I was bamboozled I left AT&T years ago after repeated issues with their service to my home...I went to Comcast/Xfinity, and as annoying and well documented of a s*** company they are...AT&T is *WORSE*. I use Verizon for my cellular service (it's a premium, but it has the network) I use Xfinity for Cable/Internet (sadly, nothing in my area comes close to Xfinity for Internet service) I will not use AT&T for ANYTHING for as long as possible.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 03:00 AM) So it's 12:45 a.m., Oct 1, and I'm driving home after leaving the office and getting some snacks. Yes, I roll a stop sign on a side street, not a major road. Cop pulls me over and I immediately signal and pull over. He comes up, gets my license and insurance. He tells me he stopped me for rolling the stop sign. Obviously that time of night they are looking for drunks. I haven't had a drink even in a couple years believe it or not. He comes back and says, 'i am going to ticket you for the stop sign violation.' I told him it was late and I guess I wasn't concentrating and said sorry twice that I wasn't paying attention. I still get the ticket despite the fact nobody's on the road at that time on this side street. My question to you is ... was this a monetary decision by the cop? End of the month, beginning of new month? Pressure to make some $$$ for the city? Or b.) did I get the ticket for being too chatty. I mean I was very nice, but I offered up to him what I was doing. I said I had left work and went and got a snack on the way home and wasn't paying attention. I didn't give him the opportunity if he wanted to ask me a question and have me answer apologetically. I merely was apologetic to begin with so I may have blown it by not letting him take control and try to get me to beg. Is it the old, "f*** you nice guy. I'm a f***ing cop and I'm ringing you up." Or was it b.) listen bub, we need money in this city and by rolling that stop sign you just gave us a cool hundred bucks, chump!" Which is it. I mean, cmon. that time of night. Side street? No cars in the area? Yes I f***ed up big time in not coming to a complete stop. But geez. ... Tough to stomach. If I am a law breaking person, and deserve to get slapped by that cop, tell me. I can take it. I had no previous tickets this past year; I don't know if that shows up or not when he calls in my information. p.s. the cop did seem like potentially a dick. He told me they were having problems at that intersection. I really truly felt like saying but obviously didn't: "At 1 a.m.? With no traffic at all around? COngratulations on raising 140 bucks for your department, officer. You got me. I rolled the sign; no doubt I did but nooo you couldn't let me off." I'm telling you I was 100 percent nice not even a hint of my being a dick. Like I said I was a bit overly friendly however. I was hoping he'd ask me if I had a drink but he didn't even go there. --humor me and tell me when u got your last ticket for a driving violation or parking. Depends on where it happened...Chicago Police have no such quotas to "raise money for the city", though this sort of thing does occur in some counties/areas. And not for nothing, but while you're busy trying to lay blame on the officer for being a dick...you're the one that broke the law knowing the possible consequences. Is he a dick for not letting you off, or are you the dick for breaking the law and then blaming him for being a dick?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) In his case or in other cases when the phone would usually wait for the Wifi signal to get stronger or to come back in (in a basement or yard for example) instead it goes to LTE by default. Not everyone should have that feature turned on when your data plan or wifi sucks. Right, the only way that happens is if you're wifi signal is incredibly poor. In those instances, I'd tell people to check the placement of their WiFi or the channels it's running on...anyone with a relatively modern WiFi router shouldn't have these issues, especially while indoors. Edit: And the only thing that can possibly use that much data is streaming high res video...I stream music and podcasts all day and never even come close to my stream using more than 1 gig a month.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 30, 2015 -> 11:57 AM) MY kid has an iphone... eating data like there is no tomorrow. He swears he only uses when connected to wi-FI. I go into this phone and find a setting that has all of his apps selected to use data plan instead of wi-fi. Is this really possible and is this the default setting. I am an android person and it seemed really shady to me and the i[phone seems to like to default to the data plan rather than wi-fi. There is no setting that says "use data instead of wifi". The setting you're referring too simply allows those apps to use data when the phone isn't on WiFi. He's either 1) disabling WiFi, or 2) dropping off a bad WiFi connection via the WiFi assist option. If its #2, I'd look into fixing the WiFi issue, because it shouldn't be dropping to data. Shutting those options off simply doesn't allow those Apps to use data connections outside of WiFi, it doesn't say, "use my data and ignore the wifi".

As for cases, I've had every iPhone since the beginning except for one of them. iPhone 1 iPhone 3G iPhone 3Gs iPhone 4 iPhone 4s iPhone 5 iPhone 6+ Never used a case or a screen protector on any of them for longer than a week...at one point when I had the 5, I tried a few cases and screen protectors but ultimately tore them off the device. Until the 6+ I never even bought Apple Care+ and I wish I hadn't bought it now...and won't be buying it for my 6S+. I've broken exactly zero of those phones...hell, my original iPhone 1 is STILL operational. I use it as a household MP3 player.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2015 -> 12:00 PM) Its been national news. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/apple-ios-9-wi...vour-your-data/ That still shouldn't happen unless he turned off WiFi, or the WiFi he's connected too just sucks... I leave that setting on and have never had a problem...as a matter of fact, I LOVE that setting. When I'm a bit too far away from my WiFi when I'm out in the garage, the old way it would remain connected to the WiFi despite getting no actual service from it...this way it drops me to LTE and I can continue using my device without an issue. This isn't the story people are trying to make it...this is simply the result of people putting up with s***ty WiFi and not realizing it until now. TL;DR: WiFi assist is awesome, and I don't know why anyone would disable it instead of fixing their s*** WiFi issue, which is the actual problem.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 09:48 AM) Hey question for thread. I do not know if I'm asking the write question as I'm searching for the answer, maybe people don't do this. I've been hoping to set up sending a portion of my paycheck monthly into an investment account to just go to an index fund. I currently have a schwab account, doesn't need to be used for this. But do you know if there are typically minimums required on index fund purchases, and if so, what is that listed price called and where is it reported? The best way to accomplish this is to call your broker and have it set up -- this is pretty much a 401k, but it's post-taxed. Some of the brokers have minimums for fund investing, others I'm not sure about, and then the funds themselves can have minimum's to start. It's easier to just call your broker and tell them what it is you want to do for this kind of setup.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 09:04 AM) And buying when things are cheap is a pretty successful long term trading strategy. And if they get cheaper? That's the point of continual investment in a 401k. I won't miss the cheapest cost, nor will I miss the most expensive cost...in the end, it averages out.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 08:04 AM) Probably half the people who smoke will never have serious health problems as a result. Doesn't mean it was a good risk-reward decision. I'm glad you got lucky, but make not mistake, that is what happened. I'd buy back in right now if I were you. By the way, not sure if it is occurred to you, but your gains are only partially made by price increases. I assume you have stocks in your mutual funds that pay dividends? By selling, you'll lose at least one cycle of those dividends across the board. Also have to keep in mind the loss of dollar cost averaging that occurs over time in 401k investing...I've been buying through my 401k from 2005 until now, which means I bought through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, not to mention the dividends made along the way. Which is why these retirement accounts MUST be viewed as VERY VERY long term investments. You buy throughout decades, not days.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 12:06 PM) Still not regretting this decision. It's easy to not regret such a decision if you look at the market in week long increments, but that's not how retirement investing works for a reason. I'll care in 25-30 more years, and not until then.

This whole story has become annoying at this point and I wish it would go away.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 21, 2015 -> 11:26 AM) I'm not a fan of Sanders and would prefer Hillary win. I have found the movement behind him naively condescending and the epitomy of elite white liberalism. The whole "well if they just let bernie debate them we can change all of their ideas!"...maybe I'm just older. Hillary is not ideal but she'll be able to play good defense. But, yeah, good for him becoming a safe senator in all-white, low population vermont. I agree with this.
