QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) That depends on if you think we're anywhere close to a bottom. There's an argument to be made that based on historic bear market P/E ratios, the stock market still has another 20% of so to go down before it hits the bottom, and that assumes no significant further erosion of earnings. Last November, my dad was telling me that it was a great opportunity to buy additional stocks, and I responded I didn't think we were anywhere close to the bottom. We're closer now. But I still think there's a ways to go. I do think we're ready for one of those late-October style big bounce upwards single days, but the bounces won't hold yet. Fair enough, but you don't necessarily have to wait for "the bottom" to win in this. The fact is we are damn low right now, as some companies are trading at ridiculous PE's, there is money to be made here long term. I'd rather things be wonderful still, but the fact remains, I'm dealing with what we have, and in the mean time I'm not complaining that I'm buying up shares of the S&P500 index at lower costs in my 401k...I'll take it while it's cheap, I may not be right, but I'm betting that in the next 30 years sometime, it'll rebound.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) If there was a very, very well funded group of people who's job it was to convince as many people and especially as many politicians as possible that gravity didn't exist, you'd be saying the same thing about gravity. The population of the earth certainly does play in to the matter, as it is strongly enabled by the consumption of fossil fuels (Fossil Fuels as fertilizers and harvesting agents and powering transportation, preservation, other processing techniques have made the population explosion possible). There are a couple ways to look at it though. If all there was in the world was the Western countries, and the big population centers in Asia and Africa weren't there, we'd still be running in to a problem because of how much carbon we generate per capita. Secondly, it's my opinion that there is easily enough energy coming in to the earth from sources above and below our heads to sustain a much greater population than what we currently have, we just need to focus on harvesting that energy. I expected this sort of response as this is a very touchy subject that some people are WAY TOO into, to the point they refuse to lend any credence whatsoever to the opposing viewpoint. No, I wouldn't say the same thing about gravity so please refrain from using hysterical examples when trying to make a point. Gravity exists even if a politician wants to fund a study saying it doesn't. We already know it does. I'm not speaking about politicians or cheap party-aligned scientists who sell out for funding and will say anything to get that funding even if it throws logic and reason out the window. I'm speaking of the fact that the science community is divided right now about global warming/climate change and our effect on it. I can care less about the political community, I'm speaking strictly on science, and right now there is as much science debunking it as there is supporting it. The world is overpopulated. Just because it's possible we CAN do something, doesn't necessarily mean we SHOULD. IE, just because the Earth can sustain more human life than it does, doesn't mean we need to "do it and see!"

Contrary to everything you may be hearing right about now, this is the BEST time to be investing in 401k's or stocks -- they're at 30+ year lows...which means that for the same amount of money you were putting in a year or two ago, you are getting MORE shares in exchange. Let this go on for a few years, stockpile the share counts in your 401k, and when it recovers you'll be loving it. And on the flip side of that coin, if it never recovers, it doesn't matter anyway. I recommend investing in an index fund at this point -- something like the S&P500 or Wilshire 5000, that way when the market recovers, you will recover directly inline with it, you will not over or under perform the market, which is perfect in a situation like this. If you have the guts to ride this out for the next 5-10 years, you'll be happy. This is an opportunity of a lifetime if you're smart enough to see it.

Bush Admin Considered Changes to the 1st Amendment
Y2HH replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) Meh, I'd be able to buy this argument, but who pays this any extra attention besides Olbermann, Maddow, and Huffpo bloggers? It's a one-day story. Everyone that watches them or reads anything about these types of trickle stories pays attention. I'd just like to move forward and beyond this, rather than countering bad news with a predictable, "But Bush did...", how about being more constructive and instead of playing typical party politics do something to move beyond that crap. I'm sick of both parties and their BS already. -
Bush Admin Considered Changes to the 1st Amendment

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 08:08 AM) no offense, but they've proposed a large spending package, are working on unfreezing the credit markets, working on reforming health care, trying to bring in Iran and get moving on greener energy... and meanwhile they haven't supported the senate hoping to do truth commissions of the Bush administration or sought to remove executive privilege from karl rove cases. Yet they release documents that people have been asking for for years and the government has nor real reason to keep hidden, and they are not proposing any solutions and 'looking back instead of looking forward' For historical purposes, its important to have actual information out there, not just the memories of the people who lived through it that "just knew what he was doing". I have no issues with any of that, I hope everything they do works when it comes to spending bills or unfreezing credit markets. It's not about hiding the information, I thought I made myself pretty clear with what I was talking about. I'm absolutely fine with the release of this information, my issue is with HOW they're releasing it. They're using a 'trickle' tactic to the media every time something bad happens with the stock market, money markets, credit markets, or when unemployment numbers hit, that's when a story suddenly comes to light about something Bush did in great detail. This isn't my imagination, either, it's what they're doing, and I find it to be business as usual in Washington. -
Bush Admin Considered Changes to the 1st Amendment
Y2HH replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
I think we all get what is on GW's permanent record by now, and those of us who don't get it will never get it whether that be through ignorance or stupidity. The Obama administration claimed they wouldn't play the blame game and do business as usual in Washington, yet that's exactly what they're doing. Rather than coming up with solutions to the problems, reassuring the American people and moving forward, they point back and resurrect the ghost of Christmas past in GW Bush on what seems to be a daily basis. It's getting old now, nay...it's beyond old now. Move us forward, move us onward...and stop pointing out the obvious failures of the Bush administration. For those who get it, no explanation is necessary. For those that do not get it, no explanation will do. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 08:15 PM) Good climate change example story from Reuters. This is the kind of thing we mean when we start talking about how urgent this problem is. Another few decades and a few hundred million people lose their livelihoods and their food source, and it's irreversible once it happens. It's possible the Earth is trying to tell us something through this "urgent problem", since it can't speak and all. Where most see the problem in "global climate change", I see the problem in the vast over population of the Earth itself, which is also accelerating...and even more alarming than rising temperatures as far as I'm concerned. The other problem is we simply don't know enough about this issue and of our contribution (if any) too this issue, but we have two camps claiming they know all the facts, when they clearly do not. And make no mistake, neither side knows enough about this yet so get off the high horses. All science agrees gravity exists. It's prooven, scientific fact. Not all science agrees human created climate change exists. Until this changes, this argument will go on...and on...and there will be no resolution, no matter how badly we'd like to think in our self-important way that we will solve this problem. I'm not sure we were meant to solve this one, either.

Anyone surprised to see the Trib attendance bashing?
Y2HH replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Trib is beyond bankrupt...and this is a glaring example as to why. Well, that and the fact that the Internet spreads news faster than print media and it's always free... -
QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) As for all the Contreras love, this is the way I see it: If we had a choice between Contreras and Vazquez as 5th starter, then... Contreras>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Vazquez. ...Make that an infinite amount of >'s. That depends. If we are playing .450 ball and in 4th place, Vazquez would throw 5 1-hitters in a row before allowing a run. If we are 1 game out of first, however, Vazquez would allow 430 ER in 2.1 innings of work.

QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 07:39 AM) From today's LVH sports book: 7:2 to win the AL Central (3rd btw) 15:1 to win the ALCS 22:1 to win the World Series When I was in Vegas two weeks ago at the MGM, those were not the odds I saw at all. Then again, they do change week to week...
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 08:06 AM) I remember being in Vegas in Jan of 2005, and putting $20 on the Sox to win the WS. Odds that year at that time were 30:1. Then after the season ended, I couldn't find the damn ticket. Found it 2 years later when moving some furniture, after it had expired for reimbursement. I had done the same thing...but I didn't lose my ticket and got paid. I was just in Vegas a few weeks ago, the odds for the Sox are rediculous -- there is almost no point in betting on them as the return is minimal. Their odds are FAR better than I thought they would be.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 10:43 AM) Not every Sox fan needs to be a SoxTalk-level expert. That doesn't make them bandwagoners. Just casual fans. We need those to have the money to make the team better. It doesn't necessarily make them casual fans, either. I know plenty of people who are die-hard Sox fans that wouldn't be able to name someone from a team that long ago. Some merely do not delve deeply into team history but instead know what is going on in the present. I don't judge a fan being hardcore only if they can name players from a prior era of baseball.

Someone do me a favor and find a way to clone Jenks 8 more times -- we can have each one pitch a single inning...everyday, and if those get tired, we can just clone a new one to replace the old busted one. No, seriously though.
-
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) Sox bullpen=garbage Jenks is in that bullpen, so that is unpossible.

Yes, this is an awesome battle song for Griff...made me laugh my ass off when I first heard it.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 08:33 PM) But it gives everyone a chance to talk about race relations and the history of blacks in America. Gee, we can holler n***** in a public park, but this is wrong? Yea, exactly. All of this racist America crap is old already, can we please move on already? -
QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 10:09 AM) Corey Feldman is one of the biggest morons I have ever seen on TV. He is just clueless. He thinks he knows everything, but he is idiotic. Yes. PS: What was with his Michael Jackson look-a-like phase in the early 90s? PPS: Did someone above actually call Feldmen a "good actor"? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!

A big fat yes to Hawk/Stone. No offense intended to DJ, but I've never cared for him as an announcer, really.

In 2005, I wouldn't have wanted anyone other than Uribe out there... But this is 2008, and now, I wouldn't want anyone other than Alexi out there. I don't think any of us will ever forget what Uribe, Pods, and the entire 2005 team did for us in the World Series, it will always be something that brings a smile to our faces. That said, it has nothing to do with 2008. Since 05, Uribe has been on a downward slide, both offensively and defensively, meanwhile, we have a younger, quicker, smarter Alexi who seems to be getting better by the day...

As Earl Weaver would say, "The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three run homers."
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) Check out the run differential, though. The Sox should keep on keeping on and the Twins should backslide a bit if the current pace is maintained. Yes, people often forget the run differential. The Cubs are the only team in baseball with a better run differential than the White Sox. If you score 200 runs, but give up 200 runs, odds are you're playing 500. If you're above 500, (like the Twins), then it's only a matter of time before the law of averages catches up to you.
