QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-p...-to/?tid=pm_pop sigh ugh I'm sure both my dad and HH will be out spending lavishly now! How. How is this still a thing. This sounds horrible. Republicans seem to actively hate nature. You do realize you can nitpick ANY bill passed in the last 30 years, whether written by Democrats or Republicans in this exact manner.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) The counterpoint is do I want to risk the White Sox's season on Viciedo being a vastly improved, tolerable OF to save that money? The issue is with Crawford is it's a massive gamble, and if that kind of money is spent on an aging player who hardly plays, that's less money to spend elsewhere. I think people love the idea of a Crawford more than the actual player Crawford.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) I looked at Crawford's stats last year. He hit 300 in 400 plate appearances and still had 23 SBs. If he can stay healthy and LA could take back cash, it could be interesting. Does Crawford ever stay healthy?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) Danks has 2/$29 remaining, Crawford has 3/$62.25. Ouch. I'd rather keep Danks if that's the kind of money on the line here...

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) Why would JR deprive him of a chance to leave right now then? So I should speculate that KW is behind all of this and Hahn is doing nothing for us? Ever since KW was moved into his made up position he seems hellbent on moving back into the spotlight.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) Well considering Jerry wouldn't grant the Blue Jays permission to talk with KW as of this time because he is needed for our rebuilding effort, it seems like maybe he deserves some of the credit (or at least Jerry thinks so). I don't know if that has anything to do with it, is there any actual information out there about KW having anything to do with any of this other than saying "ok, here is the money to make it happen?" This seems all ego to me.

Am I the only one around here that's kind of tired of KW still pretending he's the GM and seemingly taking credit for all of Hanhs recent moves?

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 07:15 AM) Not a bad price, much better if he extends before free agency next year. I would've preferred to give them both Johnson and Sanchez to giving them Semien, but I'm guessing that's why they wanted Semien. Definitely an upgrade to the rotation and now the Sox have a rotation I could see as being competitive. Sale Quintana Samardzija Noesi Danks (to be Rodon by midseason) That could be one hell of a rotation. I would say one more bat is needed at this point to make everything come together. The rotation wouldn't be 2 lefties in a row, and Shark is better than Quintana anyway, he'd be #2. -
I love Christmas music, almost of all sorts, aside from the silly stuff. The Smashing Pumpkins have a great b-side Christmas Song, at least, IMO. Also, if you haven't heard it, go listen to any Christmas music by Trans-Siberian Orchestra...awesome stuff. TSO:

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 03:01 PM) I know about 3 guys who served and are now CPD (they were hired back in 2007 or so). I know there was a freeze for like 5 years, but I thought they finally started hiring again in 2011/2012? From what I know, there haven't been many new academy classes in the last decade, I know of one for sure, but beyond that I don't know. I know there were more than that, but there hasn't been many, especially in the last 5-7 years.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) Police have always been authoritative assholes, and it's been made worse with the government giving them military gear. I'm guessing a large number of police these days are ex-military, especially police classes that have graduated in the last decade. That'd probably make a grand total of 1 in Chicago.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) Jenks and Soxbadger are lawyers. Well crap, now I can stop hating SS so much.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) I am not part of the justice or police system, if that's what you mean. I'm a stakeholder in it in that I'm a citizen. I thought you were a lawyer.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:29 PM) I think that there are systemic problems with our police and justice systems, but I don't think I'm witch hunting every cop. Just the ones who kill unarmed civilians or otherwise use excessive force and often get away with it. And aren't you part of that system?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) No. Some police act like they're part of a military occupation of a foreign country. Some either get in it for the authority or learn to love the authority once they're in the job. The driver of the car has caused the department to pay out a $100,000 excessive force settlement in the past. The other cop was essentially fired from his last job for incompetence. The Cleveland PD as a whole was slammed in a DoJ report released yesterday in for excessive force, civil rights violations, and unnecessarily escalating situations. Well, I don't necessarily disagree with some of this, since I know a few cops of this "Rambo" nature, but you seem hellbent on witch hunting any/every cop at every chance you get, and make it appear as of this was common, when it's not.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) Systemic failures of our justice system aren't few. In the grand scheme of rate of occurrence, I'd disagree. There are tens of thousands of crimes committed on a daily basis in our system, there aren't nearly that many fraternity rape accusations.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) Google Earth timeline, 4/2012. Blue line is my guess of how they drove around trees and bollards. That seems about right, but it begs the question, at least to me...why? What made them drive like that when they could have easily gotten out of the car in the parking lot? Doesn't that seem odd to you?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) Kinda sucks when a few are used to sully the whole, right. Well done. You've won the Internet.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) Here's the overhead, it was in the Dem thread. Yellow lines are the camera FOV, blue box is the car. You can see that it wasn't exactly easy to drive to the gazebo the way they did. Keep in mind that that sat image is from summer, and they clearly pulled up in winter when there would be no trees/bushes in their way...that image makes it look like they drove through a forest, when odds are during that season there was only one tree in their way.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) Someone in the comments seems to think the went into the parking lot a few minutes before the shooting. If so, why they didn't stay there and attempt to talk to the kid and assess the situation is beyond me. I didn't put much scrutiny into the video until you had me watch it a few more times now, there was a black car in about 2 frames of the video a few minutes prior to the police pulling up, but there isn't enough information know if it wasn't just some random black car, or if it was the same police car. Still seems like poor information relay led to a bad situation. If I'm in that situation, I don't think my first reaction would be to pull right up like that, but I'm also not in that situation.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:55 PM) Then you're being willfully ignorant. At the very least this video proves that the cops are liars about what they did, i.e., saying they asked him three times to put the gun down and he refused and/or went for the gun. Here's what happened, and it's obvious - they pulled up, the kid stands up, the cop sees the gun, hops out of his car, fires, runs back to the other side of the car to hide. That's all plainly visible. No audio doesn't matter, it's impossible that they asked him to drop the weapon or put up his hands. He's firing essentially as the door is opening. There was no time to respond to the "order," if one was ever given. Did they first pull up in that parking lot before spinning around and pulling up close? That's a long video, and at one point there is a car in that parking lot.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) ? We're mainly talking about this Cleveland case. Go back several pages and you can watch the video. Good to know we're arguing when you don't even know the facts of what happened. You're assuming things. Here's the video: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2...cer_shot_1.html Yes, I've seen that video, but watched it again, it just doesn't tell me much and causes the viewer to do nothing but speculate, which is kind of my point. Without audio, or more information on the situation, I have no idea why they pulled up so close. But me speculating as to why doesn't really solve anything.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:40 PM) While I doubt there is a specific guideline on this, it is certainly true that from the training (and experience) I had, there is no good reason to address the suspect in the way they did. Driving up within a few feet like that was, in my mind, poor tactics. That said, I think there is a lack of understanding in this coversation (here and everywhere) of the difference between bad tactics resulting in tragedy, and crime resulting in tragedy. The New York situation is a perfect illustration. The guy was put in a choke hold (which is a desperation move and should be avoided), and not let out of it (terrible idea), and died. Was it murder? Absolutely not. Should the cop lose his job? I'd say so. What happens in between is the grey area - was it criminal to any extent? Maybe involuntary manslaughter? Not sure, that's hard to decide. I don't disagree with any of this.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) I have witnessed actual tactical response training for unquestionably deadly situations before. You don't blindly rush into things. If it was training, it wasn't unquestionably deadly, since it wasn't deadly at all...as it was training.
