QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) Yeah, i'm telling you, the universal rule is "don't needlessly put yourself in danger." That's the universal rule of life, too. Most police don't needlessly put themselves in danger, or mean to put themselves in danger when they do. Just so happens this is a side effect of that job. The difference here is simple, you're all assuming that's exactly what police try to do -- needlessly put themselves in danger.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) The standard where they don't help to create situations where they feel their only choice is to shoot a 12 year old kid dead. Don't want to get stabbed? Don't pull up 15 feet away from a guy with a knife. Don't want to get shot? Try to diffuse the situation instead of flying up two feet away from a kid, getting out of the car and then immediately shooting him. Don't charge into a Walmart and start blasting the guy with a toy gun who's talking on the phone in the back corner of the store as soon as you see him. Stop putting yourself into more deadly situations than you need to. You make a lot of assumption when you discuss things. How do you know they didn't mean to pull up 100 yards away, when they suddenly realized, holy crap, the guy we're looking for is right there in front of us?! Do you think police have some sort of built in GPS where they know the exact coordinates of the people they're looking for when they ride up?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:27 PM) No, they knew there was a young man with a gun in a gazebo. And then they proceeded to park their car within 5 feet of that gazebo. That was moronic. In the stand your ground argument, it's akin to starting a fight and then killing that person because you feel your life is in danger. I'm sure they violated police procedure. There's no way that's appropriate when responding to a scene. You don't drive right up to the person with the gun because if the person has any intention of killing someone, he can easily shoot the cops in the car. They should have maintained SOME kind of distance to at least give themselves time to analyze the situation. They didn't do that. And the fact that they lied about telling the kid three times to put the weapon away means they KNEW they f***ed up royally and were trying to cover themselves. Did you watch the video? Honestly? Because like you from the narrative i thought the same thing - hey cops can shoot if they feel threatened and this kid had a gun and wasn't following orders. But the video shows that the cops didn't give the kid time to follow orders. They rolled up, opened the door, and shot the kid within about 2 seconds. Well, with all your training, you'd know.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) Don't take my word for it, take the Department of Justice's word. The people these cops are killing never get to see their families again. The little boy they flew up on and shot within 2 seconds will never see his family again. The guy who picked a toy gun up off the shelf in a Walmart and was shot to death for it by a police officer who rushed in and fired immediately will never see his family. Eric Garner will never see his family again. People invested with the power and authority of the state to use violence up to and including deadly force to enforce the law should be held to a higher standard. And what standard is that? That they should allow themselves to get shot, stabbed or otherwise BEFORE taking action, just in case? Laughable.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) See, I agree with SS (gasp!) to an extent though, because if it's THAT dangerous, then cops shouldn't be inserting themselves into a situation where they can get hurt. There was literally no reason for them to pull into that park like they did, position themselves mere feet from someone who they've been told has a gun (someone told me today the dispatch person never told the officers that it was possibly a toy gun, so they're going in thinking they have an armed suspect), shoot first, ask questions later. That's not good policing. Yes there is, because they're paid to do exactly that -- put themselves between those that are potentially dangerous and the innocent. In hindsight, it's always easy to second guess when all the facts are on display, which is exactly what you and the other armchair quarterbacks are doing now. But when riding up to that scene, they were aware of two things, 1) there was a person with a gun, and 2) there were innocent people in the immediate area. That's all they were aware of when rolling up to that scene...and they made a split second judgement call based on that information. And keep in mind this was information they had no reason to doubt, especially when they rode up and saw a person with a gun. I'm sure the outcome would be much different if they were given the information you have now, which is quite clear, "There's a kid with a toy gun in the park." Bad information led to that situation, not bad policing.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) They're justified to shoot in a deadly situation, but that ignores that they helped create the danger. The initial failure was driving right up to the kid so that if this kid you think has a gun makes any move whatsoever, you need to fear for your life and kill him instantly. And then there's the Walmart shooting, where the police just rushed in and shot the guy before he could even realize what was going on. You armchair quarterback a LOT when it comes to police action. They're justified to shoot in any situation they perceive as a deadly situation, sorry to correct you, since you seem to be under this completely incorrect mindset that because they're police they should know exactly what's deadly and whats not at all times. In your world, I assume they should do nothing and hope the person they're called about doesn't turn out to kill people? Because if that actually happened, you'd be the first to say, "well, they called the police, why didn't they do anything?! I thought they were there to serve and protect?" I know plenty of police, and on a daily basis they deal with the parts of society you never have to talk too out in the open, so much as even look at, and they have to make decisions on a split second basis whenever they're in those situations. Those decisions could lead to them never seeing their families again...and for what? Because in your opinion, "just in case" the perpetrator didn't actually mean any harm when he approached them with a knife, they should wait and see? I think you need to watch less television.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) I like seasonal changes and maybe even a month or two of snow and colder weather, but not months of freezing my ass off constantly. Agreed. By the end of Summer, I'm ready for Summer to go away...I'm burned out and tired of all the BBQ's, pool parties, etc. By the end of Fall, I'm ready for Winter, and by Feb, I'm ready for Spring to renew everything and make the world pretty again. Repeat. Though I wish Spring would start sooner and last a bit longer.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) I was just messing with you. Of course it's relative. But for the first time, I'm seeing a feasible path towards all the things you mentioned you have (because I want those things too), while still working in the field I WANT to be in. The two aren't inherently mutually exclusive, is all I'm saying. No, they're not, it's just rare to get both. I sincerely hope you do, too. You're one of the few people I actually like around here.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 07:52 AM) Not to throw a wrench in your plans here, but the reason I've been MIA this year? I'm making a lot of money doing what I love. How does this throw a wrench into my plans? Making a lot of money is relative to your life situation, and if you're making what I consider a lot of money, that puts you into the "quite rare" category of people that chase their dreams and actually end up making a lot of money, which I already spoke about. I have two kids and a stay at home wife to support. I need to make enough to comfortably support them, a house, two cars, take vacations, etc. And I still want the time to do the frivolous things that I love like posting on Soxtalk, playing World of Warcraft, fishing, etc. If I had followed my dreams to be an artist (which was my high school dream), I most likely wouldn't make enough to support the life I've chosen and now love, and I'd likely have to work longer hours doing unrelated jobs to make up what I'm not making elsewhere. It's actually kind of funny, what I thought were my dreams no longer fit into the picture of my life. I wouldn't even want to be an artist anymore, nor do I miss it in the least. I'm rather enjoying things as they turned out, instead.

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 06:26 PM) Amazon workers have been f***ed up and down in all kinds of ways and the only reason it hasn't been as publicized is because we don't interact with those workers while we shop. They have tried to unionize and been shut down, have had several instances in which they have been made to work overtime with no pay, and all kinds of other ridiculous things. The trick with our economic system is that we can't do s*** about it. Shopping elsewhere means cutting off our nose to spite our face. This is a complex argument when it comes to our economic system. On one hand, the fact we have a "minimum wage", which is merely an arbitrary number tied to nothing helps at the same time it doesn't help. If we want to establish a minimum wage, that minimum has to be tied to some sort of benchmark, or, what exactly is this a minimum of? As for our economic system, many people sure as hell can do something about it. Start by acquiring a skill or an education that matters to the world around you. If you want to love what you do, fine, but while you're at it, fall in love with being poor, because the number of people that followed their passion in order to do what they love that actually make a lot of money are quite rare. While I don't hate what I do, I don't "love" it either, there fare more things I'd rather be doing that I actually do love, and work isn't one of them. That said, what I do gives me the money/ability to do those other things quite often, so it's the middle ground trade off I'm willing to make in order to do something about the economic situation we find ourselves in.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 01:46 AM) I'm talking about when you're viewing it, there is no chance in what the audience has to do or get used to. 3D had those issues. Yea, I'm not even a big fan of 3D in the theater, I find that after a few minutes the novelty wears off and I find it distracting while adding very little to the experience.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 03:43 PM) Benchmarks show that the storage speed is so much slower with it on. Google's not using hardware encryption on the Snapdragon 805 for some weird reason. I may not have done enough to experience this, but a lot of people have noticed slowdowns when storage is accessed. Can the 805 do hardware encode and decode? I know a lot of chips only do one, but why in 2014 they'd even implement that without hardware encode/decode I have no idea.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) That's more a question of poverty than anything else For the record, there are FAR more white people living in poverty than all other races combined currently living in the United States.
-
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) Lol, where did I call ALL white people racists? Please point it out. I said white people don't understand minorities mistrust of the police and somehow you took that as me calling all whites racists? Really dude? My mom was white, yes there are white people in Mexico, you know Spain is in Europe, ignorant idiots don't know that. How the hell am I going to racist towards a part of what I am, lol. Get out of here. And for the actual record, no I don't think you're an actual racist, I don't know you in real life, but I've had many interactions with you on this forum over the years, and I attribute this to the current state of affairs to this reaction you've seem to have had.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 02:06 PM) Whatever, I don't give a s*** what you think. I know I'm not racist, I've never been, my mom was white (Spanish background), I have friends of every race and creed. For you to call me a racist just because I told you that I've been hassled by ignorant redneck cops, is just...like I said, whatever man. Go on living in your naive surburbia believing racist cops don't exist. I never said racist cops don't exist. You, however, insulated that all white cops are racists, ironically by perpetrating racist stereotypes, and then backed it up by pulling the I'm not a racist because I have white parents card, and then proceeding to be a racist again by referring to whites as rednecks.

I understand some of you are angry, with every right to be, but it's not suddenly acceptable to show your anti-white racism here, nor is it open season on white people that did nothing wrong to you, ever. It seems that in light of this event, some of you opportunists are deciding to take this moment to show your true colors and expect any and all white people to just shut up and take it. Well, if this is you, you can go f*** yourself. Racism isn't ok no matter what color you are.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 07:40 AM) When I first heard of this story and before the identity of the victim was released, I told friends and co-workers that I would be shocked if the victim wasn't black and the cop wasn't white... Yeah, I went there. Congratulations, you're an admitted racist, and think its ok because you aren't white. Yea, I went there.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) Got my Nexus 6. It's big, but not a pain to use or anything. I have fairly big hands, so that helps a bit. The screen real-estate is amazing. I haven't really noticed any slow-downs from the encryption, but I know I'll definitely turn that off when I get a chance to do it. If you haven't experienced any slow down why would you remove it?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) I think with any large corporation, even Walmart, there are differences between individual stores in how people are treated. I'm sure there are, but if you've ever worked fast food or retail, you'd know that's the exception to the rule. In a huge corporation such as these, you aren't impoetant, you're but a number in a sea of numbers.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) Except for the Walton family That's merely scale, Walmart is also low profit margin.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:10 AM) That's interesting, because Amazon has a million square foot distribution center here and I've never heard anybody complain about working conditions. So because you haven't heard any complaints, there must not be any. Well, I have heard them, read up on them and am aware they exist and treat their employees just as poorly as places like Walmart.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) I've never heard white people referred to as animals, but I'm sure it's not about race. Go visit the Shawnee area of IL, you might change your mind.
