QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 07:39 AM) Amazon's methods of treating their employees are just about as bad. You've just made a great case for federal laws to improve the treatment of those workers. Glad you support them. Well, I do think all workers should be treated better, regardless of what company they work for. I was merely pointing out the faux outrage and fake hatred of Walmart from the same people who shop on Amazon and tout how amazing Amazon is while ignoring they're Walmart, too.
-
I don't really care what anyone says or thinks, I shop at Walmart from time to time because it saves me money, and not shopping there won't make a lick of difference. Well, other than you knowing you paid more for something. Retail is, by nature, a low to no profit margin industry, and places like everyone's beloved Amazon have made it even worse. But I know, Walmart bad, Amazon good.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 12:51 AM) 4K isn't like 3D because it doesn't require anything extra from the viewer (like wearing glasses), and it isn't going to hurt anyone's eyes, and it's not going to be annoyingly different for anyone. If it doesn't catch on, it will be because the entertainment industry didn't cater to it and people didn't want to spend the money. It won't be because people hate it or find it annoying. It does require a lot more bandwidth or storage for what I feel is a minimal gain. Does it look better? Yes. Does it look THAT much better? No. It's not the jump we witnessed from VHS to DVD or DVD to BluRAY. 4k/8k makes more sense for massive movie theater screens. Resolution, it seems, has become the next spec sheet filling mhz/ghz / megapixel race.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 09:24 AM) They certainly aren't going out of their way to take you to a hospital known for un-insureds, but there's a reason a lot of west side folks end up at Stroger over UIC or Rush, hospitals a stones throw away with better equipment/doctors/services. And you're right, they're assigned, but I think there's assumptions being made when the dispatch center gets an address. edit: I shouldn't phrase it like i know this as absolute fact. However, I've prosecuted and defended hundreds of PI cases and it always seems that a particular brand of person is getting treatment at Stroger over the other hospitals. I don't think that's mere coincidence. Glen Lerner?!

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 06:29 AM) I don't know what insurance you guys have, but my deductibles and premiums haven't budged. My specific plan didn't change, but many of the others did, which include higher premiums, higher deductibles, higher co-pays, and higher maximum out of pocket expenses. I do pay a tick over 400$ a month for my health coverage, but I consider my specific health coverage to be diamond level.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) On the other hand, any time the topic of reduced doctors' compensation comes up, plenty of people scream that they'll all just leave the country or stop practicing medicine. Well, that's laughable. Where are they going to go to make more money, even if they took a pay cut here? A competing single payer system? There is nowhere for them to go, and they won't just "stop practicing medicine", as it's likely their only method to make a living.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 09:04 AM) Yeah, whether or not you like Obamacare in general, the fact is that it really focused almost entirely on the insurance end. Hospital and doctor markup games meanwhile are reaching Pentagon levels. And even with the fixes to the insurance picture (some of which I'd contend were good, others not as much), they still missed one of the fundamental problems with the whole model - consumer price choice. When basically all medical care costs the same to the insurance holder regardless of where they go, it shouldn't be shocking that prices are what they are. Heck, even the part of the cost that does vary, no one actually knows what it will cost until after the fact. The entire cost and pricing structure is ludicrous as it stands right now. I've maintained from the start that this would fail for these very reasons, not because it didn't have good intentions or even accomplish some good things, but because it looked to "fix" only one area of the industry, insurance. It was an easy villain to target, everyone hates insurance companies, but nobody looks at the people behind the curtain that actually send out the bills. In the end, the law did absolutely nothing to curtail the rising and arbitrary costs charged by hospitals/physicians. And so long as insurance companies can justify rate increases (and they can, because of how much doctors/hospitals charge), they too, will in turn continuously raise what they charge for their insurance packages.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 01:46 AM) Read a good op/ed column tonight saying the mean spirited asshole Republicans who desperately want to impeach Obama ought to go try and do it. It said it will show the Republicans for what they are, incapable of trying to lead, just to make life hell on Obama. It challenged the Repubs saying, "You know you want to do it; just do it. Impeach him at your own risk cause the public will see you for what you are." I think it was NY Times columnist but I forget. They won't try to impeach Obama because the alternative that would take office if they were successful is even worse. Need I remind people that Joe Biden is his successor in the case of impeachment or otherwise? I don't care how much a person dislikes Obama, for legit reasons or otherwise, NOBODY would prefer Joe Biden over him.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) Dude. Not. Ok. It's a reference to a movie, keep it within the context in which it was clearly meant. The point is/was, you don't go full retard, and Ted Cruz just did. This politically correct s*** is absurd at this point in which you can't even reference a f***ing mainstream Hollywood movie anymore.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2014 -> 09:33 PM) GEORGE WILL had a nice column today indicating it may not be all smooth sailing for Hillary in her quest to land what many believe is "entitlted" to be hers ... the Presidency. This gives me hope maybe she could lose. Will writes these two paragraphs. ... Please give me your comments. Yuval Levin, whose sharp thinking was honed at the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought, is editor of the National Affairs quarterly and author of two books on science and public policy and, most recently, of The Great Debate: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, and the Birth of Right and Left. He is one of conservatism’s most sophisticated and measured explicators, so his biting assessment of Clinton is especially notable. He writes: She is smart, tough and savvy and has a capacity to learn from failure and adjust. But . . . people are bored of her and feel like she has been talking at them forever. . . . She is a dull, grating, inauthentic, over-eager, insipid elitist with ideological blinders yet no particular vision and is likely to be reduced to running on a dubious promise of experience and competence while faking idealism and hope — a very common type of presidential contender in both parties, but one that almost always loses. Greg says: Hmmmmm. This type of candidate almost always loses! Things could get interesting. My guess is if Hilly thinks there is ANY chance of her losing she won't run. Now if she gets what she is entitled to have, the presidency, she'll go ahead and be coronated. That's my take. Yours? Not to burst your hope bubble or anything, but the same people that elected Obama the second time (and would elect him a third time if they could), WILL elect Hillary. And not for nothing, but maybe that's because the only other party that stands a chance in our glorious two party system hasn't or can't offer anyone better. In either case, when the primary dust clears, I'm betting this election comes down to choosing between another Clinton or another Bush. Awesome.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 11:50 PM) Anyone vape? I am having terrible luck with mine. I've gone through 2 tanks now. First one I replaced because it was leaking, and the girl at the smoke shop said to get a better tank, so I bought one. Then that one has been leaking too, and then tonight I went to grab it, and it cracked off. It's just been sitting, so I have no idea how it cracked itself. I have no idea if I am just buying bad brands or bad luck. Kind of getting sick of spending money everytime I go to this smoke shop. My friend does, and he's REALLY into this stuff. Works at a place and makes his own hardware and juice, and supposedly he's really good at it, and knows practically everything there is to know about it.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 12:00 AM) I really wonder why Google is so damn bad at product releases. They do a pre-order for the Nexus 6, except they say it's sold out pretty much when the pre-order began. It's a f***ing pre-order, it should be used to take gather how much interest there is something and then use those numbers to make a certain amount of devices. How do you not allow people to give you their money? They said they'd have more stock today and they sold out in a minute. Just how many Nexus 6s do they have? 15? I'm gonna have to go buy one at a T-Mobile store or something now. IMO, this is because Google is an advertising company that uses software designed by engineers to compile the information they collect in order to show relevant ads to their customers. It's their bread and butter, and it's the ONLY thing they do that makes them money, which allows them to keep things moving. Slowly, Google has started to incorporate UX designers into the mix, so they can assist the engineers in order to make better software (you're starting to see the drastic redesigns of everything they have, from Android to Google Maps that exhibits this change). They're exceptional at what they do, but not very good at the other stuff, such as supply chain management, customer service, marketing, feature awareness, etc. All of which is necessary if you want to distribute hardware, even if it's built by a 3rd party for them.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) Anyone know of a good, free DVD ripper/converter program that works with Disney movies? I have ton of new and old DVD's/Blu-Rays that I want to put on a tablet so my son can watch them on the go. Install VLC Media Player (comes with a dvd decrypter). Install Handbreak (cannot be packaged with a dvd decrypter). Select proper pre-set and rip away.

To be more specific: I vote for Rauner, Lipinski, White, and the person running against Madigan.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 09:29 AM) Wait what? You voted for 3 D's? Who? Curious what you don't like about Lisa Madigan. Or was it a proxy vote against Michael? I'd love it if they removed the 60 vote threshold, which I personally think is a huge problem. But I don't see it happening. She's only in that spot because of her father, and it was a vote against both of them. When she originally won that seat, she had no experience for the post, and beat a person that was much more qualified...I've never wanted her in since.
-
I voted for 2 democrats, 2 republicans and the rest independents last night, and one of the republican votes was merely because he/she was running against Lisa Madigan, I figured the republican candidate had a 0.00001% chance to get rid of her vs the independent, otherwise that would have been an independent vote, too. Voted yes to constitutional changes, too.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) That's the main take-away on what I was talking about earlier. There have to be any number of Illinois Republicans who would be better candidates, but it seems no one wants to run. Maybe YOU should. Locals are key, and yeah, most people don't care. That too. Judges? Water reclamation district? LOL I've actually considered it, but I don't want my family dragged into that arena.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) She was directly quoted by the Daily Herald and also an LGBT online publication that she reached out to. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/19/s..._n_4993555.html How people like this even get nominated and are allowed to actually run is what's truly baffling.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 08:04 AM) I voted several weeks ago by mail. I think I prefer that to in-person. It gave me time to sit down with the actual ballot and look into the various lower-profile races (county board, forest preserve, judge retention) When I read this the first time, I had to re-read it because for some reason I read this, instead: QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 08:04 AM) I voted several times by mail. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 08:28 AM) The Republican candidate in my congressional district apparently believes that God dictates weather patterns and tornadoes, autism, and dementia are all God's punishments for same-sex marriage and abortion access. Also, gay marriage breeds AIDS. Interesting. Now, does he actually believe that, or did you hear this from your best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend, who heard it from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night? I've seen things like this said about various candidates from various parties throughout the years, and almost never does it turn out that they said or believe anything close to what someone claimed, or they took what was said out of context because it suited them. I only ask because those claims seem beyond extreme on the stupid side.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 12:26 PM) But yes, that entire thing was boring. Luckily I talked my wife into just watching the last half hour (when he started). She wanted to watch the whole damn thing. If they wanted this to be exciting, it could have been if they added Terry Tate, Office Linebacker into the equation. Half way through the walk, Tate tries to Goldberg Spear tackle him off the tightrope. Then the question isn't who would watch that? It's who WOULDN'T? But this? This was a very experienced, well trained tightrope walker walking a tenth of a mile per hour across a cable.

I found this incredibly boring.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 10:51 PM) No but was wondering if that would help. It seems like an older model. If you have Comcast, you can check most of their modems statistics by going to http://192.168.100.1 (doesn't matter what network you are on, it should work). It will tell you your cable signal strength and nose ratios. Downstream: You are looking for power levels between -5 and +5 (zero being optimal). SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) should be 33+ dB for complete stability, but 31-32dB can also work, though it means your modem is close to falling off connection and your modem is performing a lot of error corrections. Upstream: SNR should be between 42 > and Newer cable modems will be DOCSIS3 and have up to 8 bonded downstream channels and 3 upstreams...not sure what yours will have or look like.
