  1. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Jonah Hill also went through with what seemed like a genuine act of contrition This was kind of Oldman's point...of which I happen to agree. Jonah Hill got caught, and that's that. If he [Hill] hadn't said things like that in the past, in private, or elsewhere, he WOULD NOT have suddenly decided to use the word "f**" in a derogatory way at that point, either. But that doesn't necessarily make him a bad person...perhaps ignorant in some ways, but not necessarily a bad person. People make mistakes. Some people make 2 or 3, or even 4 mistakes. A good friend of mine was outcast due to relapsed and repeated drug abuse in his past, and had it not been for me, he would have been left with nobody, probably leading him to a unceremonious end...but because I insisted he get a second, third and even a fourth chance, he's still here today, clean, sober and back with the group as if nothing had ever gone wrong. He's a completely different person now than he was under the influence. The things he said and did during that time WAS NOT him, and I knew that because I grew up with him. The only thing any of us know about Baldwin and Gibson is what the media has told us and decided to allow us to know ... PERHAPS Oldman knows them both a bit better than anyone here, and better than the media decides to portray them. f*** anything good either of them EVER did because of a few public f***ups...but I know, Jonah Hill is "genuinely sorry"...for getting caught speaking as he usually does when the media isn't around...or like I said, there's no way he would have suddenly decided to start talking like that.
  2. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) Drop in the bucket. What about forcing corps/etc to pay back taxes owed first, then lets worry about taxes on people who likely would have had to pay 0 because their income was to low. I get the protectionism, just come out and say it. You are afraid that if we let other people in, you may not be able to compete. That is fine, but not all of us are scurred. If someone from another country can come to to the US with nothing and take my job, I will tip my cap to them. We used to invite competition, now we try and stifle it. There is no economic basis in the ideology it is just fear mongering. Eventually if we continue down the path of protectionism and counter-free market principles our economy will falter. Simply put, I want the strongest America possible and that means allowing competition. I'm not sure anyone is saying this ... I know I'm not. What I am saying is along the lines of what ptact is saying, feel free to come here and contribute, it makes things better for everyone. I have a few friends that did just that. They got green cards, passed the citizenship exam after YEARS and are now both American citizens...they did it the right way, which wasn't the easiest way or cheapest way, but they did it, and are now taxpaying contributors. I'd bet nobody here has an issue with this. But that's not really what we're talking about, and you know it.
  3. We would all love to help, not only them, but every last person on the planet. That said, we have to keep reality in mind, not this hypothetical world in which we have unlimited resources, unlimited time, unlimited money, etc. If you look at this in the realm of reality, a line must be drawn, or it won't be long until millions of others catch on to this and follow suit, from other counties coming through Canada, Mexico or otherwise...we only have so much of everything to go around, and as it stands now we have homeless, starving children, Detroit, and countless other problems we don't have the money and resources to fix right here, right now...how any of you expect us to fix everyone else's problems when we can't even fix our own is beyond me. If you truly feel this way, get off the message board and donate every ounce of your time and money to doing something about it, but don't spend everyone else's money instead, which is exactly the suggestions here.

Loved Xmen and Edge of Tomorrow -- have zero interest in fault of our stars or whatever that movie is called. I make it a point to avoid tear jerking depressing movies -- all you need to do is turn on the news if you're looking for that.
  5. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 06:59 PM) One of my friends makes around $70k in LA, he barely breaks even and he's only paying $1200 for rent. That's not a bad rent for California...but still shows that money doesn't go very far there.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 12:28 AM) San Diego is an area of towns. Are you a hippie or a yuppie? ...not much difference these days. If you want to live in California in any kind of popular area -- be sure you're making about 120,000 a year, so you can be kinda-middle class. Less than 80,000 in most areas of California means you're living in poverty after that 2500$ rent.
  7. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 09:56 PM) FYI.............UPS and Fed EX drop off 35% of there total volume packages at post office for final delivery every day and number is climbing higher every year under the last mile program. The dirty little secret is you pay the extra money at UPS and FED EX but there is a 1 in 3 chance they do not even deliver it the USPS does. 95% of customers have no idea this is happening, so finding a vendor that ships UPS or FED EX through a online vendor guarantees you nothing on final delivery. I've never had this happen in my area...my packages are always delivered by UPS/FedEX themselves.
  8. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) USPS has to raise all of the money for those pensions/benefits, yes? That's the whole issue with their budget - they have to have over 70 years of retirement benefits in the bank at all times. The USPS represents, to me, the thing I hate most about today's mainstream conservatives. They want USPS run like a private business because they think that works better. We see a degradation in an essential service because of this. However, because they are a government organization and must be (nobody would serve those remote areas otherwise), they still have to take directions from Congress, who does not fund them. It's like a stupid mixture of free market conservatism and authoritarian conservatism - I want free markets and I want to tell them what to do! The USPS was a once useful business in which progress/technology has surpassed. That's not to say it's not still useful, but it's not needed anywhere near 6, 5 or even 4 days a week anymore. Anyone that claims they trust the USPS to deliver their packages over UPS or FedEX is, IMO, a liar. Their service degraded because they hired a lot of really s***ty workers that didn't give a f*** about their job (and that's not to say UPS or FedEX don't have their share of such people, too.) I've had more packages lost by the USPS I can't even count, and it's safe to say their customer service is worse than Comcast's -- which is quite a feat of strength. When I see someones shipping through USPS off of Amazon (or other online retailers), I try to find a vendor that sells the same product that doesn't...for reasons. Honestly, they could take this "essential service" down to one day a week and I wouldn't care, that'd be 5 less days I have junk mail delivered to me -- because that's pretty much all the USPS delivers these days. I do agree with your final sentence, however...but isn't that how our governments been working for decades now?
  9. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 14, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) Well really, it depends on how far away you're holding the screen. What exactly is the distance that the phone was "designed" to be held at? This is actually hard to find information since whenever you try to search for "how far to hold a smartphone", you find a billion links to the radiation crazies that think you're cell phones are giving you cancer. Off the top of my head I believe most manufactures found their users hold their phones about 18" away...that's about the distance I hold mine. Holding them closer will allow you to see more detail, but on average, when people are using their phones they hold them about 18" away.
  10. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 14, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Yes. I love having a billion windows open I do this now, on my desktops I've always liked windowing everything, I only like full screen on smaller devices where space is a premium. When I do go 4k, it will be that much nicer (next computer upgrade), which is every 3-4 years or so.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 14, 2014 -> 03:34 AM) I went back and forth between a Moto X and Nexus 5 recently. There is a noticeable difference. The Moto X has a 316 ppi screen and the Nexus 5 a 445 ppi screen. It's not night and day or anything, but if you put the screens next to each other, you notice the difference in sharpness. I can't say the same for a QHD screen, because I haven't used one yet, but I thought this video was interesting: As a previous poster said, they give you more screen real estate (which instantly gives them a real world use case), and the sharpness will be there if you look at a close enough range, but studies have shown that an unaided human eye cannot see above 300dpi unless they're holding the screen closer than it was designed to be held. At normal use distance, MOST people wouldn't be able to differentiate anything above 300dpi, that being said, there are people with better vision than others, but for the average person, the dpi's modern devices use are already higher than we can distinguish. My eyes are no longer good enough to see a difference without having to TRY to see it (ie, holding it closer than I would if using it, etc.) I wouldn't mind a desktop with 4k though, because then I can have a billion windows open in their own space on my screen all at once.
  12. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 13, 2014 -> 12:57 PM) The notion of a 4K screen on a cell phone pisses me off and I perceive it to be a virtual slap to my face. WE CAN'T SEE THE DIFFERENCE. We will feel the difference in battery life, though. What a waste. Cell phones have been like this for a while now -- we also can't see the 400+dpi range they use now on 1080p screens, but people don't seem to care. Any screen below 50" that's 1080p is a waste.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 13, 2014 -> 10:12 AM) Gravity was boring? What movie did she watch? That was nearly nonstop action for 90 minutes. Avatar's story was a little weak, but the visuals and the world he created made it great (and it's the best 3d movie ever so far). I agree Drive was overrated, and while I liked the Descendants the story was pretty hollow. Avatar was a weak retelling of Dances with Wolves, as there was almost no difference in the stories, just the settings. But yes, the visuals and action sequences were somewhat cool. Avatar was good, but being that it's like one of the highest grossing movies of all time makes me say it's overrated to a very high degree. Oh, and I saw Avatar in 3D, and just like every other 3D movie I've ever seen, meh. I prefer it in 2D. I just do not like 3D movies.
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) I was also being allegorical in reference to guns as well. These situations are s***ty and the answer is not as simple as "more guns!" or "less guns!" or "no guns!" (because the last one is simply impossible since there are already guns in the US). If I had the answer, I'd probably be in Congress or the White House. None of them have the answer either, yet they're in congress and the white house.
  15. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 07:49 AM) I found a 256GB Samsung SSD on Amazon for $114 ($100 off). You should post links here when you find really amazing deals on hardware/software.
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 04:51 PM) Also, re: WWDC. Something I saw mentioned a while after the fact that could be a big problem. We're assuming the iPhone 6 will be a significant size increase - I think I saw reports of 4.7" screens being manufactured. Between TouchID and the fact that iOS 8 shows no signs of on-screen navigation buttons, we're talking about a device with that big physical home button being huge relative to screen size. It could rival the LG G3 in footprint while still having a smaller screen than all competitors. I'm sure Apple has thought of this, they're the one company that doesn't like wasting space in their increasingly tiny designs. And TouchID is really awesome, especially now that it's opened to 3rd parties.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) Back to the original topic. Another shooting today...So now it's a weekly occurrence. At this rate, these horrific incidents truly will start eliciting yawns and no coverage edicts from the national media. So sad Obama is in charge right now of a horribly violent country in which people are killing each other left and right so to speak. "Any time. Any place" is the new motto for murder in America. Schools pretty much are known for shootings as much as education. Soon as we get one of these sprees in a sports stadium that isn't called "soccer" and the face of sports will change forever. How can Obama be so silent when we're getting at least one of these incidents a week now??? http://news.yahoo.com/police-gunman-kills-...-170534882.html Actually, sorry to correct you, but this is a daily occurrence that occurs multiple times per day. And once again, the country is STILL less violent today than it was 5, 10, 20, and 25 years ago, so whether you like it or not, progress has been made. You've now shown, MULTIPLE times in these threads that you subscribe to the, "If a tree falls in a forest and I didn't see it, hear it or read about it, it didn't fall" mentality.
  18. Good, I hope every last incumbent loses their primary and/or the election to whoever they're facing, whether they be democrat or republican. Every last member of congress needs to be replaced, because it actually CANNOT get worse than it is now, so sticking with the status quo is the only stupid decision the people can make at this juncture.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) Does Chicago ever have a calm weekend anymore or are there multiple deaths every weekend? Don't blame the media entirely. These incidents are horrifying and some day a stadium is gonna get hit and the face of sports will change forever Obama is a joke ignoring the recent California tragedy. Yes violence angers me sorry Nobody is saying this senseless violence shouldn't make you, and ever other law abiding citizen, angry. It makes me angry as well. But what you're responding too is a relatively new 24/7 to the second news paradigm, reporting things at a breakneck pace that they otherwise would have glossed over or completely ignored in the past because of the limited time they had to broadcast, and the limited amounts of paper available to print news. Those barriers no longer exist, not online (nearly unlimited space to print), we have 24/7 news channels that have plenty of time to fit every breaking story, not to mention social media spreading news nonstop. Had this around the clock news cycle/the Internet/social media existed back in the 80's/90's, the amount of news on violence you're seeing now would easily be double, if not triple the amount you see today. The bottom line is things have gotten better, but that's not to say we don't have room for improvement. When you sound the alarm that the US is sinking in violence and everybody is going to die in a bloody rampage -- when it's actually become far safer to live here DESPITE all the violent news you're being bombarded with -- you come across as the crazy guy yelling about the coming apocalypse in the street everybody tries to ignore.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 11:44 PM) You do realize that all this s*** happened before CNN and the immediate news hysteria... Not to mention he completely ignores the fact that violent crime is down over the past 3 decades, even AFTER I showed him proof. When it comes to climate change, evidence good, when it comes to actual crime statistics, evidence bad.
  21. QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 05:30 PM) So, keep eating clean, and eventually I'll get there (it really is stubborn there, the fecker). Ok. I can live with that as I have been, with just allowing myself the odd cheat meal here and there. See if I switch my macro-nutrient calculations from fat loss to bulking, I reckon I'm going to have to start eating pasta or rice or potatoes again to have a hope of making up my required carb numbers. Do you see that as a problem in terms of the 'eating clean' angle as long as they fit within my macro-nutrient numbers? I've been giving them a miss with my recent approach to eating due to the starch in them. Thanks for your answers so far. Appreciated. You should be able to bulk up without adding a bunch of carbs to your diet, unless you have one of those "I just can't put on weight" metabolisms, which it doesn't sound like you do. I wouldn't worry about altering your diet to add muscle, just make sure you are getting sufficient protein every day, but there is no reason to add a bunch of carbs.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) Safe? Wow, you are an easy grader. Welcome to America. Come back to me in 20 years and tell me I'm right. We're all going to be armed and owning guns and bringing them with us wherever we go. We'll be carrying them like we do our cellphones. You can't tell me right now as I type this there aren't thousands upon thousands of people beginning to plan their own shooting sprees. I have absolutely no idea what this has to do in with the fact that there is far less violent crime in the US today than there has been in the previous 30 years, but ok, you go on wit' yo' bad speculating denial of the facts self... Also of pretty important note, I never said it's "safe" to live here, I said it's SAFER to live here than it's been in decades...because it is.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) It's all over. America is officially the worst place in the world to live in terms of people killing its own people (aside from lunatic dictators like the North Korean asshole offing people, etc). This is only going to get worse as the months, years pass. Should be interesting to see what happens as this escalates. I would assume eventually we are all going to be armed with guns as we go to churches, movies, ballgames, malls, etc., and there will be a lot of old fashioned shootouts when lunatic killers try to do their thing at such places. I would think at this rate the arming of Americans to protect themselves will reach a fever pitch before too many years pass. Undoubtedly there will be lots of accidents involving those guys. Maybe even some mass shootings that start when somebody accidentally fires his/her gun in a movie theatre and others panic and shoot the guy/girl who fired the accidental shot. These killings will not stop and can you imagine how many thousands (up to a million??) of sick, and or, desperate individuals are planning their own shooting sprees even as I type this? It's a sick sick USA we live in. (and I'm not even mentioning how we are offing our own environment, though other countries are helping ruin the planet in this regard as well ... good luck to us all as the glaciers melt). p.s. Congratulations and thanks for the students who tackled the bastard shooter. Also the people who piled on to hold him. I like attorneys, but I shudder to think of all the attorneys who will want to defend this bastard as it'll be another high profile case in which they try to get the guy off on insanity. I've never seen so much "speaking out of anger" hyperbole in my life, and contrary to pretty much everything you just said, the US is safer now than it's been in decades. http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm That being said, I'm not disagreeing that this is a sad state of affairs, but to keep things in perspective, it's safer to live here now than it's been since the late 70's.
  24. QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 06:47 PM) I suppose the main thing I'm wondering is if I bulk up a bit of extra muscle, is that likely to increase fat burning and get rid of that stubborn bit around my belly, or will the big eating involved in bulking mean it just sits there as is. Thusfar, my calorie and macro-nutrient intake has been geared towards weight loss, as opposed to bulking. The weight routine I've been doing is called MaxWorkouts by Shin Otake, I think his name is. You familiar with it at all? Getting rid of that stubborn fat around your belly takes diet, of course in combination with your exercise regimen. Eating right/clean will kill that fat deposit, and one of the things that will help you do that is by eating good fats (within reason). Fats such as coconut, olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc. It will take time if done properly, but it will happen. I've heard of the workouts you speak of, but I've not done them. I'm not a huge fan of interval/high intensity training, they tend to tire me out which affects my ability to target specific body parts at full force. It's like doing cardio before strength training...sure, you'll still be able to train, but you'll be tired from the cardio causing you to lift less weight for less reps.
  25. QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) Over the last three weeks of combining a meticulous diet with exercise, I have managed to get down 10lbs from when I first weighed in - 178.8 to 168.8. I'm hoping I've gained some muscle weight too. I think I've also managed to get my body fat % down from around 19% to 17%. My initial goal is to get it down to 15%, and from there to keep trying to reduce it to about 12%-10%. My question is, if I start trying to bulk up at this point, will the fat loss still go ahead at the critical areas (I have a difficult-to-shift bit of fat around the belly and lower abdomen)? Hard question to answer, as I don't know your body type or how it responds to weight training, but the bottom line is any kind of activity is going to help you on this quest. The only way you can find out if it's helping speed up the process is to give it a try, at worst you change it up, at best it works and you're that much closer to your goal! Only by experimentation and time will you figure out what type of exercise/combination of exercises works best for YOU, but you have to give them a try to find out. Don't worry about what works for others, the most important thing is to find out what works great for you that you enjoy doing. Sounds like you're on the right road...just keep going.
