QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) IMO 99% of consumers won't notice the slight difference in picture quality between the LED's and plasmas. The only way the normal person can really see it is if you have both set up in a room right next to each other. That's why LED won out. You won't notice a "quality" difference on slow moving things or static images...the resolution and color production is mostly the same. However, ANY sport or fast moving image is instantly noticeable, as LED/LCD has to use tricks to keep up, while Plasma does not.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) Yes they are all off brand but still theoretically better than any standard plasma or led The only thing they have of better quality is resolution. But that's akin to the mhz race with microprocessors or the megapixel race with cameras. 3ghz is not always better than 2ghz. 20mp is not always better than 8mp. The same applies to TV's. The image and color processors used in those off brand 4k tv's can barely support the resolution (if they can at all).

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:23 AM) You can get really really really really s***ty/low quality 4k tvs 50+ inches for well under a grand now. But nothing really supports it outside PS4 (which really doesn't either). High quality 50" plasmas still cost 500-700$, so any 4K TV that costs less than 10 grand right now, is an incredible piece of s***.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:16 AM) Thats what I'm guessing. I emailed my AV guy about it, he said theres this great 4k technology tv I just saw, its better than plasma. price tag? 30,000 The biggest issue with 4K's, and it will be in a issue for YEARS to come, is quantity of content available for it. Especially in digital formats, a movie will come in around 60-80gigs, depending on compression. That's a massive amount of data in terms of bandwidth AND storage for a single movie. Yes, there will be some things available for it, but by and large, you'll find yourself watching 1080p content at probably a 99:1 clip. It will be a LONG time before mass quantity of 4k content exists, especially OTA/Cable/DTV. They JUST converted up to 1080i (not even 1080p), so it'll be eons before they upgrade to anywhere near 4k. Amazon Prime and Netflix might support it, but that will be more for attention than usability due to storage and bandwidth limitations, not to mention throughput.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) I wonder what this bad boy looks like http://www.amazon.com/Mitsubishi-WD-92742-...822&sr=1-38 DLP's are very nice, the technology, while dated, produces a really amazing picture. I know, because before moving to Plasma, I owned one, and so did a friend of mine. The nicest thing about them is when the picture dims over years of usage, replacing the bulb puts it right back to brand new quality. The problem with DLP's is they're not wall mountable, which is a nonstarter for a lot of people these days.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) Looks like all hope is in OLED. My 6-7 year old plasma still owns every LED/LCD if ever bought or seen. I just invite over a friend to watch hockey and its evident. I really want something 70in or above and it looks like ill be settling for the soap opera effect. It's not only that, if you want to even get near Plasma quality at that size in LED, you're talking 3k+ price range.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:05 AM) And Panasonic is stopped production of plasmas in April. Dammit. I hate that LED's have "won", the picture quality just isnt there. Perception is reality ... a lot of people are convinced LED/LCD is higher quality than Plasma, so the manufacturers are making what they're buying. People view "Plasma" as old. They're wrong in every regard, but it is what it is. It's exactly like VHS beating BetaMax, despite being of worse quality.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:00 AM) Why cant they make a plasma larger than 65in? I dont f***ing get it. I dont really WANT an edge lit LED in my sports room. I think because they're made of 2 panes of glass sandwiching the plasma gas they become too fragile at that size and prone to very easy breaking when people handle them.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 12:27 PM) ok. Started another round of p90X since its been awhile and ive let myself take a long rest. Day 2 was yesterday and today, well, can barely walk. Had to pause 3 times during plyo. S+A tonight with some ab ripper The fact you can still finish it after taking time off, even with breaks, is pretty amazing.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 12:55 PM) I no longer carry my HTC One in a case because it is extremely sturdy and I've seen it be torture-tested by CNET, so I know it can take a beating and still be functional. It doesn't show wear easily because of the aluminum, so the minor scuffs and such aren't there. I use a screen protector that I honestly never even notice, because I know that I would end up scratching it. Love the glass on this thing though, as that has taken impacts a couple times and shows no signs of damage. I broke two iPhone 4 screens -- those things were built very poorly. I'm not an amazingly careful person by any stretch, but the impacts that broke those screens were ridiculously light. I was using a case on those, too, of course. For me, it is basically an "it depends" proposition. Depends on the phone, build material, what I'm going to do with it, etc. I put a case on my tablet because I toss it in my backpack and I want it to be somewhat protected from all of the things rubbing up against and possibly the weight of those things. The iPhone4 wasn't built poorly at all, it simply wasn't built to be a baseball, which is something it's not. If I threw my watch around like people throw their phones around, it'd shatter/break, too. They're not baseballs, footballs, wrenches, or freebees, people...they're phones, mostly made of metal and glass these days, ie, not meant to be dropped or thrown against walls. I've seen phones of all types with shattered screens, and that has nothing to do with build quality, it has to everything to do with the people using them, and a bit of luck. If you're prone to breaking them, put it in a case. I've seen iPhone 4's survive 2 story drops off a balcony, only to shatter from a 7 inch drop. I've had every iPhone since the original, I don't use cases and have yet to break a single one of them.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:35 AM) Curved/flexible phones? Anyone think these have appeal? I just don't see it right now. None of these phones seem to do much to me...mostly gimmicky useless stuff they did just to say they did it. But for what actual need/reason, I don't know. The idea of a phone you can fold in half to fit into a pocket is one thing, it has practical uses, but a slight curve in a screen smaller than a movie theater screen, I don't get it.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 03:48 PM) I sell to them a lot, but no I don't take profit from them. If I resell over the internet I do. I wasn't going to charge Rock extra either if I had his tv but I do not.
-
I don't use a case and never have. I've tried a few, including Ghost Armor, but they all annoy me and I quickly remove them. I've never dropped/broken a phone, either. With how a lot of people replace their phones every year or two, having a case is mostly pointless. If you do drop it and scuff it up really badly, AT THAT POINT, stick it in a case and you won't be able to see any of that scuffing. Also of note, most cases do not actually protect your phone from screen breakage, as that damage most often comes from impact, not direct collision. It's akin to wearing a football helmet -- while protected from direct visual damage -- it still cannot protect from the impact itself. Outside of something massive like an otterbox that's designed to absorb most shock/impact, thin cases do nothing but protect from scuffing. And as I said earlier, if that's your concern, don't use a case until after you scuff it up -- THEN cover it up with a case and you can't tell anyway.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 11:02 AM) Sold 5 already. Keeping one. Just got one more to get rid of, or keep. Fine with either. Actually trying to get one more that Amazon screwed up on. Sold them to who? Please tell me you aren't profiteering off of friends and family.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 10:22 PM) As in they offer developer edition devices and nexus phones where you can load completely customized versions of the OS? Yeah, not very open. Not at all in context to my original post. I'd guess that 95%+ of the people that use Android don't care that the core OS is open, and most of those 95% don't even know what open means. As for what you said, yes, you can load a vanilla OS that does almost nothing by using the "open" parts. Now, if you remove all the closed portions of Google from Android, you are left with a largely useless and much less attractive OS. Maps G+ Music YouTube Play Docs Gmail Now Etc. ALL closed. And without those apps your custom "open" Nexus device is nothing more than a feature phone with a large useless screen. Back to my original point, I don't mind the ability to customize, I'm not saying Google should take that away from the USER, I'm saying they need to take it away from the manufacturers and the carriers.
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 07:22 PM) That would go against why most people love Android phones, because we all don't have the exact same cookie cutter phones that Apple resells every year. It's the customization and open source that a lot of, not all, people love about them. Aside from the core of Android, there is almost nothing open about it. Almost no Google applications are open, such as maps, g+, docs, etc. All owned and completely controlled by Google. You know, everything you use that actually makes android good. Customization is fine, so long as it's controlled by Google settings, but brand skinning, adding sub par apps that replicate things built into the OS I can't remove and adding carrier bloat sucks, and I wish it wasn't allowed. If they were optional downloads that's fine, but sense and touch wiz aren't optional. If I was in my 20s I'd have loved it. Now that I'm in my 30s and have to deal with it professionally, not so much. I'd prefer it be left to the user to download any extra apps, skins or otherwise on their own.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 04:56 PM) Got an S4 over the weekend. Will let you know my thoughts in a bit (moving from an iphone). The screens are undeniably awesome on the modern larger Android phones, but I dislike the Android experience immensely. If you're into customization, it's a nice albeit largely unnecessary addition, but the apps/settings is just a sub-par experience IMO. After jailbreaking my iPhone back on iOS6, the customization stuff was fun for about a week before I stopped caring again. I HATE working on Android phones for people at work for this reason. Every one of them is different, looks different, works different, and the apps, even apps that are the same on both just don't work or respond as well, and most of them have multiple apps that accomplish the same tasks, and depending on which one the person decided to use, you have to start troubleshooting with that one. I hate it. I wish Google would outlaw carrier tweaking/skins on Android and close source it.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, even those that argue with me and are usually wrong.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 08:28 PM) oh i completely agree that it was pathetically introduced. the thing was delayed a year for god's sake and they still couldn't iron it out? but my point is that it's working now. go try it. see how it works. if you dont like the plans it gives you, continue to b****. otherwise shhh. You must forget that I'm part of the ruling class that wouldn't want the plans it offers.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 05:14 PM) Eh, the statement stands. China is the only country who could even attempt to threaten the US. Because if you think that the US economy is propped up by China, what do you think the result will be if the US can no longer borrow money from China. Its just a different form of MAAD. In order to critically injure the US, China would have to deliver a near suicide blow to itself. And visa-versa. It's a no win situation. So while they can, they have nothing to gain by doing so, and neither do we.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 05:08 PM) I don't understand why people don't call their alderman more often. Makes stuff you think will be hard so much easier. Like?

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 05:30 PM) BUT IT DOESN'T WERK! There is nothing wrong with calling out a failed roll-out of something so important, when they had so much time and money to make it work properly from the get go.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) I know it's kind of a dying product, but has anyone bought a camcorder recently? This will be my 16 month old son's 2nd christmas, but first real one where he may know what's going on (at least to the extent that there's something inside a box he needs to unwrap). So, my wife and I are looking into a camcorder of some type. We've been using our phones and/or tablet but they don't have the memory (or the right set up really) to leave on for an hour while we unwrap gifts. And it's kind of annoying having videos on three different devices. These are nice... http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-HX-WA2-Wat...=pd_sim_sbs_p_4 Run off memory cards, HD with a lot of zoom, small/light and water proof.

I live in the city, but we have alleys, we throw just about anything we want in the trash and the garbage men take it without a problem. I've never once heard anything about it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 08:39 AM) That 9% approval rating is a bit misleading since we don't elect representatives at-large across the entire country or even across an entire state for the House. Both me and a die-hard conservative in Texas might strongly disapprove of Congress right now, but I'll bet that that person loves them some Ted Cruz whereas I'd think he's exactly the cause of the problem, not my guy. Misleading yes, but still very very bad.
