QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) BBC says Google's not getting any money for this. Up front maybe not...but with such a licensing agreement, there is certainly money to be made somewhere down the line. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it just for the sake of "it's cool".

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 07:31 PM) The computer is only about 18 months old. The drive is still under warranty from WD so I'm good there, I'm just looking for any way to get what data I can off the crap drive before I send it in for RMA Without breaking the drive, if it won't mount, there isn't much you can do. You can get a rather large/powerful magnet and hold it to the drive, that should damage any data on it pretty severely. I wouldn't worry too much about it, when drives are RMA'd like that, there are pretty strict rules they're supposed to follow about it's disposal.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 06:19 PM) naaaaah we haven't talked in 3 months and that's as it should be. my "feelings" are just fake feelings. No they're not, she "completes" you.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 06:21 PM) Probably not. A crapped out drive is a crapped out drive. I think it's time for you to get an SSD. A good SSD has a much lower rate of failure (at least before it degrades after it reaches its writes limit). Not to mention the performance boost you'll get. That's probably a whole bunch of upgrades for him, not to mention SSD's aren't cheap. I highly doubt his motherboard even supports them, unless he has a pretty new computer on his hands.

So, Android v4.4 is actually code named KitKat, compete with a cross promotion with Nestle and ... KitKat candy bars. Seriously. While I don't mind KitKats...is it necessary to crossbrand this? The last thing we need is MORE advertising in our lives.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) Soxtalk is the best thing in his life but besides that, you're spot on for sure. ...and people say we aren't "understanding" of others.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) thanks! Don't listen to him. You're life is empty without her, and you're doing it because you know, deep down, she was perfect for you. You're just coming to the realization now that a long cold, VERY lonely winter is approaching because you blew the best thing in your life.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 1, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) No, I think his point was very much the opposite. ...? The opposite of your argument that it takes too long? wtf are you talking about? Did you just claim that his argument is that he's happy it takes that long to start up a netflix video on a ps3? Because if not, you don't know what opposite means.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 1, 2013 -> 08:45 AM) You can still get the code from Best Buy. I got 9 months for free. If I was in the market for such a device, and it tied into the ecosystem I use, I'd get a few of them, but they'd simply be less than redundant for my purposes. I have 2 AppleTV's connected to my tv's already.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 1, 2013 -> 01:54 AM) I'd say 40-50 seconds. System is usually on in about 20 seconds, then netflix app takes another 5-6 seconds. Then to find the video I want, then to have it start. I'd say 40 seconds if I am trying to hurry it up. Usually I turn the system on and go take a leak, then choose Netflix while I turn my fan on. I'm rarely sitting and waiting for either activity. I think his point is that it doesn't matter that it takes a whopping 45 seconds to start up a netflix video from his PS3. I never realized how right Louie CK was with his routine where he talks about people that can't give anything a f***ing minute these days. The Chomecast is nice BECAUSE of what it costs. Otherwise, he's right, while this will change, at this very moment, it's nothing more than a Netflix/Youtube device that you paid Google to beta test for them. Sqwert is in a different category, though, since Google practically paid him to take the damn thing. He got the 3 months of Netflix credit, and in such a case that was a no brainer. They quickly yanked that offer.

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 07:41 AM) Debating between this: http://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-2-5-In...=A25SITGFW0OQJA which was reviewed favorably here: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-...ble-hard-drive/ but I'm also looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Portable-Ex...bs_595048_price because it's a little cheaper, but perhaps more vulnerable to damage. And then I'm just generally feeling bad because these things apparently have a high rate of failure I wouldn't worry too much about it, I've owned many such drives from many different manufacturers and have never had a problem. These high rates of failures you read about make me question how these people are treating their equipment. I'd venture to guess I use this type of stuff more often than most, and like I said, no issues regardless of manufacturer. Keep in mind, I also carry an iPhone around without a case, and have never broken one or scratched one badly, either. I'm just not a clumsy mess.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 06:19 PM) Definitely want USB 3.0 for quicker file transfers. Other than that, I'll leave it to the experts. While I agree Thunderbolt or USB3 is the way to go, it's only good if his PC also has USB3 capabilities. If not, he can get a 3 terabyte USB2 drive for like 90$ at CostCo.

By the way, that 5 step post of mine was a joke. I figured #5 would give that away.

The problem with many of you and dating is quite simple, and I can give you a few tips on how to fix it. All you have to do is follow these five easy steps: 1) You'll have to get in better shape. Way, wayyyy better shape. This is a must, because she has to think you care about yourself more than you care about her, which will force her to try to make you care about her more than you care about yourself. 2) You'll have to learn how to let everyone around you know that you're better than them, without actually saying so, as that's the difference in being conceited, which nobody likes, and confidence, which the girls love. This will cause the girls to gravitate to you while telling their friends how annoying you are, but like a moth to flame, she will come. 3) You'll have to learn that when in the "group of BFFs" situation, where your actual target is the cutest one, be sure to pay more attention to her obviously less cute friends, as this will annoy her, and cause her to go out of her way to get your attention back from the lesser minions that surround her. 4) You'll have to learn how to be an "asshole", because let's face it, the ones you want to date love the asshole. Sure, they'll tell their very sad puppy dog friendzoned guy friend what an asshole you are, and how nice and awesome they are, but you'll be the one they're texting or calling later that night for some action. 5) You'll have to get way better looking. This is probably the most important step. If you can get them to say to anyone they know, "He's not THAT good looking!", then you've won. If you follow these simple steps, I guarantee that dating will be easier, more successful, and even if you go out of your way to f*** it up, they'll forgive you.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) No, I think that is probably very true, Reddy....we're finding out that everyone reacts differently to different stimuli based on tiny differences in our genetics. They are finding that certain people experience tremendous gains from training, while others experience very little. Fortunately, everyone experiences gains from exercise, so you literally cannot say that exercise is "bad" for anyone, but for some people the improvements are pretty limited, which raises the question of whether they should be doing different things, such as diet, to see larger improvements with their limited time and resources than wasting a lot of time on exercise. I think the same probably holds true with nutrition. Some people probably respond very strongly to changes in diets, while others might improve, but not nearly at the same level of magnitude. It's also why you have to be careful when asking for advice when it comes to diet/exercise. If the average person followed my diet/workouts, odds are they wouldn't see the gains I see, and for me, they tend to come quickly/easily. There is no one diet fits all, nor is there one workout plan fits all, though a lot of people will try to sell you products that say otherwise. I've done this for a few of my friends, because I know them, but tailoring a diet and a workout for a person requires a LOT of knowledge of that specific person.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) this is potentially true, it's metabolic typing. it's also the reason some people are naturally endomorphs/ectomorphs etc. for example, based on my metabolic type, I do much better with dark meats, organ meats and fattier fish. I don't know a whole lot about it, and it's another "fad" type idea that's become popular lately, but that doesn't mean it lacks some merit. I'm a mesomorph, which is why a lot of this is so easy for me.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) Honestly, I'd have to sit down and look at protein quantities in the foods I eat and add it up. Is there any protein really in fruits and vegetables? If not, I probably get more like 40-50 grams a day if I am not supplementing with a shake. There is in certain vegetables, but not a lot. Like I said, if you wanted to get about 28grams of protein from a vegetable rich in protein (take Quinoa for example), you'd be looking at consuming 3 servings of it PER meal. That's a lot of f***ing Quinoa. Here is a rather simple comparison: 1 .50lb (145 grams) chicken breast contains 30g of protein. 1 cup of Quinoa (185 grams) contains 8g of protein. Do the math.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 02:00 PM) which you can easily achieve with plant based foods. THAT said, I don't do it, and unless you're vegan, you shouldn't either. I never said it couldn't be done, but you'd have to be eating a lot of plants in order to achieve that...or expensive plant powders. Much easier to do it with lean meat.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) Gotcha. I'm about 165 give or take a few pounds on any given day. I'm pretty toned, but would like to cut a bit more body fat and add a bit more muscle. Not a ton. My entirely uneducated guess, given my normal diet, is that I probably get less than 100 grams of protein per day, considering I really don't eat much meat. Adding a protein supplement adds about 25 grams, once a day a few times a week, but even with that supplement, we're talking 100 grams or so per week. I'm sorry, I incorrectly listed 0.90g as my goal, that should have read 0.60g per body pound. So, by that, if you followed my exact goals, you'd be shooting for ~99 grams of protein per day.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) So how much do you believe normal people need, Y2HH? That's a loaded question, as it would depend on their weight, dietary restrictions (if any), body makeup/genetics (endo/ecto/meso), and most importantly, their goals. I can tell you my personal target, which is ~0.90 grams per pound over the course of the day. And even with that goal in mind, it's still probably a bit on the "too much" side of things. This works for me, and it allows me to do it without the need of protein supplements.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) but it's clearly a strawman argument you're creating if you agree with me that we don't NEED that much protein in the first place. and yes, the dead peruvians just make it taste better. I don't know what, but they do. I don't think you need as much protein as a lot of people say, but I DO think you need more than most vegetable sources will provide through a normal diet. I'm not going to recommend someone eat 9 servings of Quinoa a day because that'd give them the necessary amount of protein they require, especially when considering their goals for muscle recovery/gain. There was no strawman here. People need more protein than what you're suggested vegetable sources will provide them through regular servings, but they also don't need 1.5grams of protein per body pound, either.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) i dont know what quinoa you're eating, but my quinoa actually contains 8g protein per serving. http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/cereal...d-pasta/10352/2 I also am of the opinion that we don't need as much protein as the government and the meat industry lobbies want us to believe. Well, we agree about the amount of protein we need/don't need, and you won't get an argument from me there...but still, you'd need to eat 3 servings of that Quinoa every meal to equal that of one serving of meat. It's still disingenuous to pretend they're the same, pound for pound...or ounce for ounce in this case. Quinoa does offer other benefits, however...including causing the poor people that farm it to have to sell it to you, so they can starve to death.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 10:43 AM) unfortunately you didn't really read what I said. I never claimed soy to be a complete protein, but Hemp and Quinoa ARE complete proteins. While true, these comparisons you're making are a bit dishonest, as you're merely speaking of its amino profile while ignoring that a full serving of Quinoa contains a mere 3 grams of protein. In contrast, a full serving of just about any animal based protein is upwards of 25 grams. So yes, if you eat 8 servings of Quinoa every meal, you'll get the equivalent amount of protein, with a "complete" amino profile, as compared to simply eating one chicken breast.

Ok, so for full disclosure I recently decided to take the advice of Reddy (yes, you read that right), and throw some Yoga into my weekly routines and I'm happy to report how wrong I was in my attitude toward Yoga. I've been doing this for just about a month now. Now, while I'd still never do this in public, or take such a class, I will say it's invigorating and obviously increases flexibility. I still do my weightlifting routines, but this was an excellent supplement to my workouts. I can't make it look like everything Reddy says or recommends is bad. Even though he is a modern day hippy.
