  1. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 11:00 AM) LG just announced the G2. 5.2 inch screen, but about the size of the Galaxy S4 and almost no bezels around the phone (remember that convo about bezels not existing Y2HH? It's about that time). The power and volume buttons are on the back of the phone, which is interesting from a design perspective, but also weird from a user perspective. I guess we'll see how the it functions in the real-world. It's also the first phone with a Snapdragon 800, clocked at 2.26 GHz. 3000 mAH battery, so it should last a good 20 hours, even with the 1080P screen and the beast processor. This is a incredible piece of hardware and there is a chance the next Nexus phone will be based off of it. They're starting to make bad design choices in order to accommodate these super thin bezels, such as moving power and volume buttons the the back. Having power/volume rockers on the edge of the phone makes it easy to reach into your pocket and find them, for example, when you're at the gym. Reviewers are saying the move of the buttons to the back actually works well because its a phablet sized device, but I don't know...seems awkward and something you'll have to feel around for. Just doesn't seem like a necessary design change, especially considering I use my volume up button as a camera shutter, which is extremely useful. -- Not a big fan of the ugly plastic back. ++ Good choice on LG for using an IPS display. ++ Screen looks very good.
  2. I've used Etrade for years now, and never had a problem.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 07:37 PM) You don't use it to lock it? Eh not really, sometimes I guess. But how hard is it to learn the new location of a random button? I just don't get the big complaint.
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) I am totally dumbfounded as to what is wrong with the placement of the power button Gotta agree with you on this point...how often do people actually use their damned power buttons. I reboot my phone maybe once a month, and it's the only thing I use the power button for. I think I can find the "other side" it's placed on after a week of use. That's like complaining that not ever PC has the power button in the same spot. Who cares...so long as it has one, take the five f***ing seconds and learn where it is.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 12:37 PM) Yeah, after all that I ended up not needing it. But I couldn't figure out what it was at first and I had to go through all that rigamarole. At the end of the day UPS ends up getting some extra business. Now I gotta figure out where to buy a down volume button on the internet somewhere - it works fine but it's mangled-looking and scratched up after what I did to it. That gives it character, and a battle scar in that you worked on it!
  6. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 12:30 PM) The OTA didn't brick my phone though. It works now. The software was doing what it's supposed to do (it goes to hboot if you hold down volume while it's starting up, like pressing del to go to BIOS on a computer) So it's all working now? Send their replacement back to them...no need to pay for something you don't really need, right?
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) I had a pretty odd sequence of events happen with my phone yesterday. So T-Mobile released an OTA update for the HTC One and I downloaded it yesterday. Normally you download it, install, and wait for it to finish, it reboots, shows a quick upgrade screen and that's it. Mine got stuck on the hboot screen you get when you're putting a new ROM on it or something though which sucked. I called customer service and they sent me another phone but mentioned I'd have to pay a $175 insurance fee if there was physical damage. I figured f*** it, better than having a non-functional phone, but I wouldn't be able to get the data off the phone. To make this already-long story not even longer, the aluminum case on the One is strong but not indestructible, and it was pressing in my volume down button (which hadn't been a problem until now) so I took a small screwdriver and pried the button off, and the phone finally was able to get past that screen, and a pair of pliers fixed that dent. Because I didn't really break the volume button I was able to put it back in, so now I got this phone coming and I don't want to pay the $175 because there's nothing wrong with my phone except it looks like a small animal tried to chew near my volume button. Whoops. No way. Complain, complain and complain some more. The fact that their OTA update bricked your phone has nothing to do with you, or the condition of your phones casing. That's their own fault, and you need to press them to own up too it. That's absolutly absurd. Had the update THEY released from QA not bricked your phone, it would have still worked, regardless of case condition. That is 100% on them, and they should accept full responsibility.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) The HTC One Mini? The Butterfly and Butterfly S are doing great in Asia. I honestly doubt HTC will stop making top-tier phones. That's would be extremely stupid on their part. I agree, and I hope they don't...being that IMO, their flagship HTC One is the best Android based device ever released. Then again, I'm an Apple user, so my opinion on that doesn't mean all that much. But it is the first and only Android phone that made me say, "Hmmm..." after it was released. They feel amazingly well made, and look good/high quality. I've never been a fan of the cheapy feel of Samsung phones.
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 1, 2013 -> 11:43 PM) Yeah, I've not anything to suggest this. Despite some misrepresented articles that suggest the contrary, it seems that HTC views the One as a success and anticipates taking more market share in the future. It's not be misrepresented. They tried to enter the high end of the market and they failed. They're about to post their first operating loss and it's because of the low margins of the HTC One. While they say the One has "improved their brand awareness", it's simply not selling. The writings on the wall with HTC on the high end, I expect them to fade away and be content making money with the low end versus losing money on the high. I think this is rather clear that their focus is shifting to where they think they can actually make money: "The Taiwanese smartphone maker revealed it plans to launch a range of "innovative and competitive mid-tier products in the coming months." HTC executives acknowledged that it has not been competitive in the mid-range smartphone market, where the industry is currently seeing the most growth."
  10. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 1, 2013 -> 08:02 PM) Yeah, a little underwhelming The market is saturated, at this point new devices are simply more choice. There is a sea of phones out there, unfortunately only Apple and Samsung seem to be reaping any success. It's looking like HTC is going to throw in the towel on the top end now, so another one bites the dust. I think Google is smart enough to know that the upper end is owned by the big two now, and sadly most are afraid to try.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 05:37 PM) This new Nexus 7 is f***ing awesome. The screen looks amazing and it fits very comfortably in one hand. I really disliked how big the top and bottom bezel are when I first saw the pictures, but in person, it's not as bad. Hardware wise, it sets the bar not only in terms of quality, but also price wise. Now it needs some applications that don't totally suck balls on Android tablets.
  12. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 05:49 PM) We seemed pretty damn close I thought. She would cuddle up on me when we watched movies, we'd make out, she set a new daily alarm to start taking birth control, and she did that right in front of my face, all the signs were looking very good as of just Sunday. Then Monday we tried to hang out, last minute she says her parents won't let her, we get in to a small argument about how it's like the 5th time she has flaked out on plans, then the next day at work (Tuesday) we are fine until she all the sudden blew up randomly over text. It's not that I think she is insane of her to not want to get too close and attached right before I leave for school, but the insane part is that it was a complete 180 from where we were 2 days prior. There was no slow deterioration of talking, no ignoring each other, no signs that she felt this way, then BOOM, I get hit by a truck when she all the sudden say "Yeah, we're done now. I don't want anything else but friendship". I got completely blindsided. Oooooh, of course not. I should have just been a real jerk and banged her that night of the party a few weeks ago when she said she wanted our first time to be sober. But no, I'm a nice guy and didn't want to force the issue. But my big question here is, last night she said "I just wanted to have fun this summer, I wasn't trying to have a serious relationship". Then WHY THE f*** would you say you want our first time to be sober and special? If you just want to have fun with me for the summer, then WHO THE f*** CARES? And I don't think it was an excuse, because we were groping each other pretty good, and she kept saying he wanted to f***, but then she stopped it before we went at it any further. Just seems like she must have changed her mind at some point, and in the meantime, I got pretty much 0 physical play out of this 1 month fling. Really hoping come December we can try this again, but it's really hard for me to keep talking to her right now. I'm too pissed to be her friend about this, even though it's probably an awful way to go if I want to try again in December. Because girls of this mindset say things to sound proper, but often don't mean them. Like I've said a million times, girls in this mindset are often young(er), and those in that mindset love to tell the "friendzoned" one thing, and then do the exact opposite with the "jerk" she then complains about to that same friend. So in this series, I see you as the good guy. ...and then she met a jerkface. Stop being the movie quality "good guy", you do realize you could have slept with her and still been respectful of that fact, right? IMO, that still makes you the good guy, only THAT good guy got laid.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 03:11 PM) Ah, tracked down the right quote. University of Kansas study out on this topic today. (Also pay attention to the fact that a substantial fraction of that compensation is executive pay. If mcdonalds held executive pay constant, or god forbid only paid their CEO $2 million, the price increase required to pay everyone $15 an hour is even smaller). That article is all kinds of dumb.

    Where would you live?

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) I'm teasing sheeeeeeesh Some people don't care what their SO wants or cares about these days, actually, more than those that do it seems, given the divorce rate.

    Where would you live?

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) Not necessarily a dealbreaker For me it is. We both have to want to go somewhere to go there. If we didn't feel that way, we wouldn't be married in the first place.

    Where would you live?

As for where I'd live...right now, Chicago, which is where I live. My friends are here, my family is here, my wife's family is here, jobs are here... But when I near retirement...decidedly NOT Chicago.

    Where would you live?

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) Being the youngest in my family, my memories of road trips are of me riding in the "b**** seat" (the not actual seat in the middle of the bench backseat) with both of my brothers legs on me while they leaned against the doors and slept. ...and somehow you lived! I look back on stuff like that fondly.

    Where would you live?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) Have you been to Hawaii? There are plenty of roads to travel. The outdoors activities are amazing. I get the island fever feeling. But 4 hours away and you're in California or the northwest. That's closer than Chicago is to that stuff. I've spent several weeks on Kaui, Maui and Oahu over the years, and it's such a laid back feeling. If you lived in Honolulu you're just living in a big city with great weather, but if you're out in the "country" it's incredibly relaxing. Traveling within the same state != road trip.
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:02 AM) Nope, I just re-wired everything as I was replacing my tv stand. When I set it back to 2.0 it works fine. You driver could be blown in that speaker, or torn, causing vibration.
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 10:28 AM) Never mind the 50% drop in health care cost, you have to find something to freak out about. haha Not happening.
  21. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 06:17 PM) I'm having issues setting up a new center channel speaker. I decided to add the center speaker to complement my current 2.0 setup (a sub would never fly with my downstairs neighbors) and I really wanted it to help with dialogue in shows and movies. Anywho, I'm using a cheap 2011 Sony STR-DH520 receiver and whenever I try to put it to the 3.0 setting and turn up the volume it: A. Sounds like tinny crap B. Turns off the receiver once I hit about 20 in volume, with "Protect" starting to flash on the lcd screen. I can't find anything wrong with what I'm doing, literally just going in and setting it to 3.0 and turning up the volume. Any ideas on what could be going on? Are your wires crossed?
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 12:38 PM) Apple TV was 90 bucks on Amazon. I suggest people buy that for "smart" tv functions. Same, but I really only recommend that to people that are invested in the Apple ecosystem already. These products aren't really competitors to each other, they're doing different things entirely (Google thingy and Apple TV).
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 11:46 PM) So will Chromecast be able to mirror my Chrome browser or not? Yes, that's basically what it does. It mirrors Chrome, or connects to the Internet via links and broadcasts what the link connects it too.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 07:05 PM) There's definitely some sour grapes, but Whole Foods is renowned for both treating their employees like s*** and being giant hypocrites. I went to apply at a Whole Foods, asked an employee how I could do that, and he graced me with a speech about how I really should reconsider getting myself into that hellhole. Had a similar experience at another one. Then I started researching online and saw that this was pretty commonplace. Well, depending on the employee you meet, that could apply at any job. I know that despite stories, I would have rather worked at Whole Foods than Jewel, but Jewel is who hired me. Wasn't the best job in the world, but it was a job, and I took it -- and kept it -- for a good 3 years. My main goal with the job was to show I could stay put, nothing more. I'd have preferred to be elsewhere, but Jewel was convenient (close to home), and it's what we had. I know for a fact there are people where I work now that would tell you to stay as far away as possible, but my own experience would be to say, if you can get in, get in, and stay in for as long as you can.
  25. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 04:50 PM) Whole Foods employee quits, sends letter detailing hypocrisy of company and hilariously rips co-workers Yawn, another angry "whistleblower" letter from an angry former employee. Maybe this person should take their own advice in that they were "only working in a supermarket and should relax". Then again, to some people, it'd be a great job to have. I think at any job I've ever worked, there are positives and negatives, but I never felt compelled to do something like this, and it irks me we gave people like this even a few minutes of fake fame. I worked at Jewel for years, and then Osco for a few years following that, and both were similar. To me, they were stepping stones to my career, helping get a resume together that showed I could keep a job, but to others that worked there, it WAS their career, and it helped them pay their bills. If you don't like where you work THAT badly, quit.
