QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 09:24 AM) Guys let's stop with the personal invective, and if you see a s*** post you don't like that's not addressed to you, just ignore it. You're right...agreed and removed. As I said coming into this thread yesterday, I knew I should have just avoided it...emotions are just wayyyy to high to have a real conversation about this at this point.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 09:18 AM) Clearly we did not have the laws on paper to make this act illegal. That's the point I just made. No, quite the opposite. There are laws on paper that made this LEGAL.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 09:00 AM) Which means that the laws everywhere are f***ed up and this kind of event isn't just a unique accident of one state. Well, they pretty much are. When you have a government that writes laws specifically designed to "raise revenue", which translates to "taking additional money from citizens that probably can't afford it", does it really surprise you that they'd write vague laws like this which allow something like this to happen in the first place? After they nearly collapsed the world economy and not a single person (that I know of) went to jail for it...not much surprises me about our system of laws and loopholes anymore.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 02:22 AM) They make great phones, but they give you one solid update and that's it. Meanwhile Apple still is sending updates for the 4S. That's the problem with them. Actually, that's the problem with a lot of them. This lack of continued support is troubling, especially in an era of security flaws/holes, etc., that absolutely need to be patched on devices that basically carry everything about your identity, from banking, to credit cards, email, etc. The days of yearly upgrades to cellular phones are over for most people (I think), so software updates mean more than ever before. Especially when you're talking about devices that cost 200$+ locked in contracts or 600-800$ without a contract. These devices need to be supported for people that don't hack/root/etc. I'm not saying they should support devices for 5 years, either...I'm thinking by then an upgrade is in order, but 2 years (at LEAST the length of the contract) should be mandatory.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 07:32 AM) I agree 100% with that quote above. I don't see any way that there was enough evidence to warrant a murder conviction, and probably not enough evidence to bring murder charges in the first place. I also fully believe that Zimmerman made some very poor decisions and those poor decisions lead to Martin's death. I'm not enough of a Florida legal expert to determine which is the case, but either (a) the state screwed up in not pursuing the appropriate charges for this case or (b) Florida law is so poor that Zimmerman couldn't be legally held accountable. Agreed. In the end, there wasn't enough evidence to find Zimmerman guilty of the charges brought against him based on the laws as they exist in Florida. However, there also isn't enough evidence to find Zimmerman completely innocent, either. This sad series of events has ruined countless lives, and has further damaged already poor race relations in this country. I honestly wish people would get over the color of their f***ing skin already.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 10:12 PM) Haven't followed this case, unlike the Casey Anthony case and Jodi Arias and some of the other hi profile cases of the last few years. That said, I've read Whitlock's stuff on foxsports about race issues. What's the quick take on this case?? Did the jury not have anything to go by? Why is he innocent? Is it more of the lack of evidence thing? Based on the evidence available, the laws in Florida basically say its legal. It's obviously more complicated, but that's the gist of it.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 08:22 PM) I think tensions are understandably high when it seems that lives are at stake. I'm trying to give everyone a pass. Then where were these "tensions" on July 8th when like 14 people were murdered and another 50 were shot over the span of 3 days? Lives were lost or at stake, but nobody gave a s***. I think it got all of a single mornings worth of media coverage and discussion. Don't give anyone a pass. If you're upset about this, you should be upset about all of it, not just the ones the media gives you permission to be upset about.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) I thought we talk about how we'd like our country to be governed in this forum. I think this case has exposed some inadequacies in our lawmaking and it seems many others agree. I already stated my peace that it didn't seem like you could convict based on the laws at play and the evidence presented, but that doesn't mean that the laws are good or the procedures to execute those laws are good. The question at hand is whether, based on all the evidence, you think George Zimmerman should go unpunished. Not based on the law, but based on your own moral/political compass. If you were making the laws, would your laws make him innocent? Will you encourage your politicians to make laws that make this result more or less likely? Us talking about how we believe things should be is one thing, but the attitude I'm reading here isn't that, it's as if things should be that way and anyone that disagrees is a moron/dumbass/etc. That's not a conversation, it's a get along gang that slings insults at anyone that disagrees with the hive mind. That's why I said this thread has devolved.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) I don't know what point you think you're making here. Then think about it a little and maybe you'll come to an epic conclusion.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:47 PM) What's wrong with a normative discussion about the ways things ought to be? Again, the way things YOU or I think things aught to be aren't the actual way they aught to be. Having a conversation about it is one thing, but I've been reading a lot of outright insults here, and it's sad. This thread has devolved at this point, and there are only a few of you left at this point I'd even have this conversation with. For the record, you are one of them.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:22 PM) I think you're having a different argument than everyone else. We're talking about what the law should be, not what it is. We're saying that if what Zimmerman was doing isn't legally classified as threatening behavior, then it should be. You mean you're taking about what YOU think the law should be, not what it is. That and 3$ will get you a cup of coffee at *$. The last 50 posts here, give or take a few are exactly why I've attempted to avoid this conversation. Conjuncture, opinion, speculation galore, but no logic based on the actual laws that actually exist, of which this case was actually tried on. As I said, including to those of you on this tread that outright told people to f*** off, this is outright ignorance at this point, and most of you suck. We're better than Reddit and the like, so stop being exactly like Reddit.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) Trayvon did scream - allegedly - and the scuffle attracted a lot of attention. I'd imagine, given the way he was treated/profiled by Zimmerman, he may not have believed he'd be a welcome sight if he was banging on a stranger's door. I thought this was a mixed race neighborhood...why would he believe that?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) I think the person Balta is referring to is a black woman, I'd have to read my comments to make sure, but in that case that strikes right at the heart of what this issue means for black people. As the parent of a black child that's really jarring. You have to recognize that you're just not seen the same as a white kid walking through a neighborhood. There's someone who's going to look at you and conclude you don't belong, even though you weren't doing anything wrong and minding your own business (that Trayvon had THC in his system at the time is completely irrelevant, that his phone had pictures of guns in it is irony). Anyway it's hard to explain this to your kids. We'd like to think things have changed, but a lot of things haven't. While I can never "get that" and say that "I know you you feel", since as you know I'm a white guy, the question posed is what you can you tell your kids...well, that's a few things you can tell your kids, regardless of their skin color. And you're right, a lot of things haven't changed, and I feel it will be a long time before they ever *truly* do. I plan on telling my kids a lot of these same things when they're old enough, despite being white...you still have to be careful out there...something we've all heard countless times.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 12:17 PM) One of the things someone wrote on your facebook page really hit me. One poster basically said "I'm the mother of a teenage son. What do I tell my son he should do to avoid this?" I keep running through the options. Run? Martin did that, the response was "oh he's running", running or hiding makes him a suspect more. Approach the strange guy in the car who's following you?Crazy. Defend yourself? That just gives the guy a reason to shoot. Wait and let him do whatever he's going to do? Why on Earth do you assume this guy following you is a good guy and not out to kidnap you? The only things I can come up with are don't be "suspicious", which seems kinda difficult...and carry a gun yourself. I assume you don't have kids based on this, but seriously...were you EVER a kid? Did you ever have any sort of, "what to do in an attempted kidnapping training", or "what to do when a stranger tries to give you candy" lessons? Or even, what to do if you're actively being stalked? Seriously. I figured this was something every parent put their kids through. You can't control being suspicious to someone, but you CAN attract attention if some creep ass is following you. You yell, you scream, you make noise...you attract attention, you bang on a neighbors door, a strangers door, whoever has lights on, or...if you're close enough to home, you go there. If you're caught by a person like this, yes, you defend yourself and yes, that CAN lead to death. In short, you do what you have to do to get away, or find help/attract help, or defend yourself when necessary.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 11:51 AM) I don't like it when people bring up Burress or Vick, they have nothing to do with this. Different states. Different crimes. Different evidence. People are just grasping at whatever straw, regardless of how unrelated those straws may be, as long as they support the outcome they had wanted. Confirmation bias at its best/worst in this case, depending on how you want to look at it. Here is how I look at it, as a person that doesn't really know anything about Martin or Zimmerman other than what the media told me about them, it's sad. The entire thing, from how one was basically convicted by the media before any real evidence existed, to the fact that a teenager died, to laws that allow such things to occur. This case brought out the worst in people, including otherwise good people, including some on this website. It's all very, very sad. Up until now, I haven't made any comments on the verdict, not here, not on Facebook, Twitter, or otherwise, because I know what it will do...it will spark off needless debates of hatred between the believers and the disbelievers, and ignorance will ensue. I've already witnessed this on countless FB posts and retweets. Ignorance from people that I know aren't ignorant...but are allowing emotions to cloud their otherwise logical judgement. In short, I'd rather not partake in such a conversation with people I know or like, especially when I know most of them are better than that.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:57 AM) Its really not that shocking and I posted something similar last night about how a jury may not want to give 25 years but is okay with 1 year even though technically the defense is the exact same. Y2hh, From what Illinilaw posted yesterday Im pretty sure the way the judge handled the manslaughter charge is going to be okay. She threw out the 3rd degree based on child abuse. Ah, ok...I'll have to take your word for it, you know a lot more about this than I do. This just all seems odd...but that probably has a lot to do with the odd FL laws.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) i think George Zimmerman is gonna get convicted of manslaughter. ...and that's the problem. Since he was never charged with manslaughter, he'll appeal it. And now he can't be retried for murder. I don't know all the details, and I'm no expert, but it's looking to me like the judge botched this case from what I have pieced together.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) I don't think going Apple will work for me. I use a couple mapping programs for outdoor travel that don't run on Apple's OS, plus I'd have a whole crap-load of other files I'd have to hope translated over OK. Not going to risk all that. Do like our iPad though. Sounds like it is either a simple server ssetup (with maybe a RAID controller), and then media server software, and software to rip the BD's and DVD's to disk. Then I have to figure out if there is a way to turn my current desktop rig (laptop) into a thin client over the server. Also, if I have a normal, non-Apple TV, how can it "read" from the media server? Doesn't the TV need software to do that? Or can the media server be controlled somehow with a remote, and just have it run via HDMI to the TV? You don't have to go Apple, just use iTunes in Windows and get an AppleTV for like 90 bucks.

We have successfully ripped BR's with Handbreak just fine. The files ARE quite big, however. I do the same as Rock, I have 2 AppleTV's connected to my televisions, where I can stream/airplay from any device in the house. I have 2 iMacs, 2 iPhones and an iPad, all can airplay to the televisions, or mirror themselves to the televisions. All connected via a single WiFI router. I have over 900 movies cataloged, dated, with synopsis and cover art in iTunes (all MP4's). I even have quite a few television shows, such as All in the Family, Friends, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead available just the same. It's really nice, on any of my televisions, you can scroll through a list of genres, years, etc, select the movie, and bam, it plays instantly. Do keep in mind that this is all grey area, as supposedly, you don't have the right to rip a DVD/BR even if you own it, which I find completely ridiculous. I have boxes of DVD's and CD cases FULL of them that I've purchased over the years, and they want to say we can't rip them (if this is even still true).

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 10:49 AM) Im still not understanding why he wasnt just charged with all of this in the first place. Is it legal to do that? Charge people with multiple charges on one specific crime?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 05:43 PM) If their coverage wasn't garbage I'd give them my business. This. Any of the carriers not named Verizon or AT&T are simply no-gos for me because of coverage. Even Sprint, which I consider #3, is garbage in terms of coverage.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 04:27 PM) Women date the jerks and marry the nerds. Just an FYI. Or they do both. Like in my case. I'm a pretty nerdy jerkface. As many of you can tell.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) I can see how she might feel that way but I just don't think it's warranted. Granted, I can't tell someone how to feel but I don't think guilt tripping on my health habits is the way to go. Steve it was more of a "Why are you losing weight, I like your gut you're like a teddy bear!" I'm tired of being overweight so I am doing something about it. If she wants to remain as is, that's her right to do so. It's also her right to be insecure about it, finally it's my right not to be frustrated with that. Yea, I can now see exactly why she's insecure about it based on how you just answered my questions. Retract the claws, tiger. We were just asking.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) i know we've had this discussion before... but women don't think a man who does yoga is less manly... just... so you know. in fact it's quite the opposite Women say a lot of crap out loud, but most of them don't actually mean it. Otherwise, they wouldn't keep dating the jerks whilst telling the nerdy friend they should date someone more like him...only they never do. So, not really quite the opposite, just something they're telling you to make you feel better, while they go date the jerky jock...that doesn't do Yoga.
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 01:14 PM) I don't doubt that. However, her insecurities in asking me why I am working out and what will happen when I lose weight are suspect. They can be, but that depends how the discussion went with you. She might feel you're getting back into shape to leave her/trade up to someone society might deem "better", simply because they're in better shape. I'm a bit surprised you can't see how she might feel that way...
